Using a serial port under j9.. How?

I am trying out j9 on an ipaq. I am trying to get javax.comm to work.
When I call CommPortIdentifier.getIdentifiers ();
I get java.lang.string.NoSuchMethodError: java/lang/String.<init>([BIII)V
It would appear that the javax.comm package was implemented using a now deprecated String method, and that IBM has chosen not to implement deprecated methods in it's j9 vm (I get the same issue trying to run swing.)
One would think that what is needed is an updated javax.comm package. However, there doesn't appear to be a javax.comm package on Sun's site, let alone an updated one. Whats going on here? Can someone give me an idea of how Sun and/or the JCP thinks about developers who want to use serial ports?
Is there a workaround? A different way of talking to a serial port? Or should I abandon j9? I should add that I got my software running just fine on nsi.com's creme vm (javax.comm and swing too) and it worked without any hassles. It even understands jar files (is there a reason why IBM insists on having a link file?). However, the reason I persevered was that a) j9 is cheaper and more importantly b) nsi.com don't seem terribly keen on actually selling their product. I have lots of references to them selling their vm in bundles of 40 ($1000) which is a bit ouchy but hey I'm not paying for it. But, you'd think the nsi.com people would actually confirm this on their site?
So.. can it be done? And why, in the world of embedded systems (my field) and now lots of phones and pdas, is so little attention given to the humble serial port? It doesn't matter how fancy the protocol is, underneath it all is a UART. grumble

Hi Russel,
I will probably soon be in the position you are in trying to get this to work. I found the following page which offers some promise.

  • Sending an ESC code using the serial port

I have a motor control aplication that requires sending an ESC character using the serial port. LabView has several built-in functions (end of line, line return, etc.) but I just do not know how to send this particular code using the serial port. Any ideas?

The hex code for ESC character is 1b, Try writing it in a 8 bit unsigned number and then change that byte to charachter using labview function "byte Array to string". In this way you can pass this charachter.

  • I can not communicate with the FP-1000, using the serial port.

    FP-100 communication by serial port.
My problem is the communication with the interface FP-1000, I haven been using it for two month with my program application and suddenly it stopped to work. I tried to use the FieldPoint Explorer to communicate using its last configuration but it does not work. I have tried to configure again and the FieldPoint Explorer doe not find any module, also I have seen that the network and access LEDs don lit when I am trying to communicate with the FP-1000.
I have checked all connection and they are already, the FP-1000 turn on, and the status LEDs does not lit.
I guess the trouble is the RS-323 connector at the FP-1000.
Could you tell how can I solve this problem?

    Hello,
There are a number of things that you can try when you are experiencing communication problems with a FP-1000.
First, double-check that the serial port that you are using is the same one that you are specifying in FieldPoint Explorer. Try using another serial port on the host computer. Try connecting the FP-1000 to another computer.
Make sure that you have FieldPoint Explorer version 3.0.2 or later. Free upgrades are available from the web.
    I hope this helps,

  • Keyboard on serial port under Solaris 8

I've hooked a special keyboard into the serial port (/dev/ttya), and am trying to read from and write to it. I enable the port via "admintool" (with "initialize only - no connection" and only "software carrier" checked under options, and then set my port parameters via "stty" as needed. Then I can start up my C program to read/write to the keyboard. This works for a moment, but then "ttymon" seems to reset the port or something, which changes the port parameters and screws up my program. If I disable the port via "admintool", which kills "ttymon", then I can't set the port parameters as needed and run. I can enable the port, set the parameters, and then kill "ttymon", and then run my driver. This seems to work, but doesn't seem like the correct way to go about doing things. So what do I need to do? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Don

    Hi donernsdorff,
You can disable ttya been monitored by ttymon and see if that helps. You can use pmadm command (Pls see man pages for details) to disable or change the port monitor settings. Hope this helps. Thanks. SUN/DTS

  • Using a serial port via kermit and a USB adapter

I have need to use a USB->Serial adapter for connecting to console ports (Firewalls, etc). I bought a nice Keyspan adapter for this.
First, I've not been able to find a version of kermit that will work on Snow Leopard. Anyone have an updated version?
Second, which device do we use for "set port /dev/ttyXXX" ? Is there some novel way that the system tells you which tty is mapped to which port?
I'm sure there must be more to it... there is a disc with these USB devices for OS X (though I'm not sure they'll work in Snow Leopard).
    Thanks!

Take a look at GoSerial http://www.furrysoft.de/?page=goserial it configures the port and acts as a terminal. There is also the screen command in the terminal, and minicom you can get though macports.

  • Can't use ch340g serial port driver since upgrading to Yosemite on MacBook air

I use my MacBook air with the Arduino 1.0.6 IDE. Since upgrading ( free upgrade) to Yosemite. I can no longer acess the ch340g serial port. (does not show up in arduino ide). I tried re-installing the driver. I get no errors and am told the install was successful. This was working very nicely before the upgrade. I now have three boards I cannot use. I am at a loss as to what I should do.  I suppose I could go back to Maverick but then I would have to go buy the operating system. This seems wrong to me. I was offered an upgrade that then leaves me up the creek without a paddle. Any help given would be highly appreciated.

I have the same problem, a non stable CM341 serial to tty driver on Yosemity on a MacbookPro Retina.
I followed the advice of Rsattaur, I executed the command: sudo nvram boot-args="kext-dev-mode=1"  and now I have big problems with my USB-ports.
The result is a screen-of-death after connecting anything to my USB-ports!!!!

  • Using USB Printer on Beige G3 with Localtalk/Serial Port - How?

I have an Epson Stylus 740 which has both DIN 8/Serial port and USB connections, but the serial quit showing-up, so I want to connect via the USB connector. Is this possible?
Is there an adapter from DIN 8 Serial/Localtalk connector on Beige G3 to USB for Printer?
Or do I need to buy a PCI to USB card?
    Other solution?
    thanks

    Russo:
If you tried to connect an adaptor to the serial port that had a USB connector on the end, it probably won't work since the serial port isn't currently working. You'd need a USB PCI card to connect to the USB.
I have this same printer, originally used the serial port and then switched to USB when I got the PCI card. This has worked great.
You should see if something got turned off. Look at these:
Under the Apple Menu>Control Panel > AppleTalk - make sure the printer port is selected
Under Apple Menu>Control Panel > Remote Access > Modem (from the drop down menu) - make sure that the printer port isn't selected
Under Apple Menu > Control Panel > USB Printer sharing - make sure that is turned OFF.
You might also have to install drivers for the Epson from the disk that came with it. If you insert the CD and choose "custom install" you'll get another screen that allows you to choose the serial driver package.
Post back if you get it working (or don't).

  • Problems with access to serial port using reentrant code

    Hi,
I have a VI that send commands and receive answers from an instrument using

This VI runs perfectly when used alone.

    What is this?
Does someone know how to prevent this?

You can't use reentrant vi's vith serial vi calls without supervising of
    driver.
Use VISA instead and you have to control the VISA session opening and
closing. Another word is that the only one serial port sess
    ion should be
    opened at a time.
Reentrant vi's for serial port without checking serial port session is a
mistake of program algorithm. Change it in any convenient way.

  • Serial ports crash on cFP-2010 using LVRT 6.1.1 and 6.1.3

I have LabVIEW RT 6.1 and cFP-2010. I am trying to write an embedded VI that will communicate with some external hardware through the serial ports, but I am not able to get the serial ports to work. Because I do not have LV7 I cannot use the VISA VIs for serial communication. I am using the old serial compatibility VIs. When it tries to configure a port (port 0 or 1) it sometimes says Error 37 but usually it just reboots the cFP module. I've tried writing new VIs from scratch and I've tried running old VIs that I had written for FP-2000 that uses the serial port, neither works. Can anybody help?

I have used the serial ports in LV 6.1 without trouble.
I would suggest you contact NI for a possible replacement of your cFP-2010. It sounds like it has a bad serial port.

  • Using Serial Port for Non-Serial Data Acquisiton

I searched the forums and couldn't find anything related to this topic.
I saw that it was possible to use the parallel port for simple digital I/O and I was hoping the serial port can be configured the same. It seems all the VISA VI's only want to use the serial port to recieve ASCII chars at a given baud rate, but is it possible to simply poll the status of the serial line at my own speed to see if it is high or low, kind of like a single pin DAQ?
It seems it would be possible as long as the serial data is read and controlled by labview and not by Windows. Let me know if you have any ideas how to approach this problem, or any feedback as to why it is not possible.
    Thanks everyone!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Select Property>Serial Settings>Modem Line Settings. For example, the CTS State is an input to the pc.
Using these lines is a very poor replacement for a scope or DAQ board. The only things you can get back is Asserted, Unasserted, or Unknown. The range of acceptable signals is quite large. Anything between +3 and -3 is an unknown state. Your other signals are +/3 to 15 volts. what kind of signals do you actually want to capture?
edit: There is no such thing as VISA Status so I have no idea what you are actually using.

  • How can i delay the line and charactor rate of my serial port transmision?

There's nothing built into the VISA or old serial functions but it's pretty simple to program yourself. Here's a VI for specifying a delay between characters. It uses VISA but you can easily swap that out with the old serial write if you want. It just breaks out the text string character by character and adds a delay before each character is written. To add a line delay, just add another delay after the entire string is written.
