Using a single Catalog/ Database to support several workstations

I am a staff photographer at a University that has one other full time photographer and several freelancers. We would like to find a way to use lightroom and integrate it with a multiple photographer database. I know that it is not wise to locate the lightroom db on a server, but can the Catalog be on a drive located on one computer and accessed through the network? Can a local library be setup on each photographer's computer that can all be fed into one searchable db?

Well
Lightroom Tutorial Podcast #45 has been posted, The Lightroom Catalog - Part 1, or Where Are My Pictures?, though U have a feeling the part you want would be in Part 2 of Catalogs.
Maybe someone else knows of a better Tutorial.
Otherwise, I say try some trial runs on a small scale and see how things pan out. Have you gone through your 30 day trial yet?

• Catalog Database creation

Hi Joel Pérez,
I accidentally replied on your topic 'RMAN ( CATALOG CREATION ) STEP BY STEP'.So i am very sorry. I need your help.
According to 'Recovery Manager user's Guide' allocation disk space for recovery catalog database are-
SYSTEM tablespace 90 MB
Temp tablespace 5 MB
Rollback or undo tablespace 5 MB
Recovery catalog tablespace 15 MB
Online redo logs 1 MB each (3 groups, each with 2 members)
Is it possible to create system tablespace on 90MB on 9i rel2? Do i need to run the catalog.sql,catproc.sql & other scripts on catalog database?
Please give me a guide line how to create a catalog database.
Arif Md. Eftekhar Rashid.

Hi joel
I successfully created catalog database and can backup from there. I have created two database one for my production database and one for catalog. I created those databases using dbca. Catalog database should be as small as possible for the shortage of my storage. So During the createtion of catalog database Should I include the follwing additional feature –
Oracle Spatial
Oracle Ultra Search
Oracle Data Mining
Oracle OLAP
Oracle JVM
Oracle interMedia
Oracle Text
XDB Protocols
What is the function of those additional features? Can I eliminate those option during the creation of production database too?

version .... ? In general you would use the highest version of the RMAN client and the RMAN recovery catalog for all lower database version. Since RMAN's active code is inside the database kernel, the RMAN command line interface is used to issue the command to the database. This allows a higher version of RMAN command line to connect and issue backup & recovery commands to older versions. Look at the Backup and Recovery 'Reference' manual for command compatibility.
>
how can we configure tivoli tape for backup purpose with our database..?RMAN needs a 'Media Management Library', which is basically an external driver, to talk to the tape system. Normally you purchase that from a third party (BMC, Veritas, Tivoli) or you could purchase Oracle Secure Backup to act as a complete backup management system which happens to include the RMAN MML. You want to check http://www.oracle.com/technology/deploy/availability/htdocs/RMAN_Overview.htm and look at the Backup Solutions Program (BSP).
Some people think MML tends to be expensive and direct-to-tape tends to be slow. So some organizations have taken the approach of RMAN to staging disk and standard OS tape backup from staging disk. (I've even seen organizations create an Openfiler-based iSCSI NAS with a few TB of SATA-based RAID (10) for under $2K and attach that as the disk backup. Slower than SAN, faster than tape, and very inexpensive.)

• Ssis 2012 parallel execution of ssis packages using catalog database hangs

i have a simple ssis package in 2012 where I am executing several data flow tasks in parallel using sequence containers, however very often the sql job just runs forever although all the tables have been loaded or I cant see whats going on, the job neither
fails nor succeeds, just goes on executing,is there an issue with executing several data flow tasks in parallel, why does the job continue to run forver, how to troubleshoot and fix the error, please guide, are there any issues using the catalog db execution,
is that the reason this behavior is showing?

multiple execute sql tasks within sequence containers running to execute the ssis packages deployed in ssisdb in sunchronous mode using the catalog database execution model
all of the ssis packages that have the data flow taks retrieve data from source to 3 different tables.
some of them push data into the same table.
please let me know if you need more information.
the job just runs forever, looks like all the data flow tasks ran and it is still running, because I don't see an increase in the row count of the tables, I may be wrong, if I check the execution status, 1 task does not show as succeeded, I don't know why

• Can we use Grid Infrastructure 11.2 to protect a single instance database?

Hi all,
I would like to use Oracle Grid Infrastructure to protect a single-instance database.
I found these docs:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/products/clusterware/overview/em-db-failover-128585.pdf (for 10.2)
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/products/clusterware/overview/si-db-failover-11g-134623.pdf (for 11.1)
I was unable to find a similar document for GI 11.2 . Do you know if such a document exists?
At the moment I only know that the GI is free if used for an Oracle Product, but I am not shure whether it can be used to protext external applications or single-instance databases
Andrea

Hi,
while this still works (the scripts for failover you find in the demo folder $GI_HOME7/crs/demo/coldfailover), the document does not exists, since with 11gR2 there is a supported solution called RAC ONE Node, hence rendering the manual setup obsolete.

• Advantages of using higher version of catalog Database.

Hi Gurus,
Wanted to know what are the advantages of using higher version of catalog database.
for ex: my target database is 10.2.0.4 and catalog database is 11.2.0.1

The very reason is that you would be able to use all the new features offered by the current release. Like, 11gr2 offers Virtual Private Catalog which you can only use in 11.2. So its better that you move your catalog too to the higher version when you upgrade your database.

• Maximum number of user mailboxes supported by single Exchange Database in 2007 / 2010 & 2013 ?

What is the Maximum number of user mailboxes supported by single Exchange Database in 2007 / 2010 & 2013 ?
Aditya Mediratta

Agree with Keith, there is no MB # limit, however there are practical concerns such as DB size and how that effects recoverability as well as performance. In terms of extremes we had one major educational customer that had 35K Mailboxes in
a single database so you can utilize a ridiculous # of mailboxes in a DB if desired. IMO you are better off to keep the # of mailboxes to a reasonable level, i.e. no more than 250-500 mailboxes per DB
Search, Recover, & Extract Mailboxes, Folders, & Email Items from Offline Exchange Mailbox and Public Folder EDB's and Live Exchange Servers or Import/Migrate direct from Offline EDB to Any Production Exchange Server, even cross version i.e. 2003 -->
2007 --> 2010 --> 2013 with Lucid8's

In essense you are really doing nothing more than restoring a backup on a new host. If you want a blow by blow detail of how to accomplish it take at http://www.oracledistilled.com/oracle-database/restore-database-to-another-host-using-rman
In order to write the files to the ASM Disk groups you will use the SET NEWNAME FOR DATAFILE in your restore script. You will also need to create the ORACLE_BASE/admin/<DBSID> structure on all of node. Once you get the database completely restore you will need to edit the SPFILE to include the proper value for the CLUSTER* parameters and each the node specific parameters. Sorry that it is kind of higher level than what you are probably looking for but the link above and what I put here should get you were want to go.

• Using a Single Library for Entire Site and When to Use Subsites

I'm hoping a discussion I am having with my coworkers can be solved. We are trying to decide two things:
Should the entire office be under a single site or should each division have their own site? Our Office has 5 divisions that contain 17 Branches, one site for business functions and one top-level site for the entire office.
Is it standard practice to create one huge library managed by metadata or should there be multiple libraries? I tend to think one library will be too hard to manage with regard to metadata and site columns and that libraries should be based on business
functions or subject domains (i.e., SOPs, Quality Documents, Business Documents, Technical Documents, etc).
Currently, several workflows, libraries and lists have already been created under our business functions site. In order to house everything under a single site, we would need to change the name of the site and move everything under it. I'm not
sure if changing the name of the existing site will cause problems.
I group these two items together because they really seem related. With everything under a single site, individual libraries, lists and workflows could get out of hand as everyone tries to manage their own division. But then so would a single
library for everyone. The problem with more than one site is that data cannot flow freely between sites (via workflows) and search would be less effective so some are against separate sites. So knowing one question may affect the answer for the
other.
Any thoughts on our library and site structure would be appreciated. Thanks.

As always the usual SharePoint consultant cop-out answer of 'it depends' is correct.
Having said that there are certain trends that are quite relevant:
It isn't common to use a single site collection for all sites. It can be done but it often leads to a state where you have a single monstrous site collection which is harder to backup, recover and maintain (see the boundaries and limits documents). The
default behaviour in most cases is to have a central 'shared' site collection then one per <group> where Group is a team that works on the same content, has broadly the same area of interest and access. That might be one for HR, one for the Support team,
one for the Sales team etc.
In terms of libraries there's a wide variation. If there' no difference in views, security and metadata then keeping the library count down is generally a good thing. However using multiple libraries can make life easier and better for users by allowing
more useful views, more secure by locking down libraries rather than using item level permissions (always a nightmare) and allowing more useful alerts and so on.
SharePoint architecture is a science but it's a really, really hard one to formulate into If/Then rules. So, broadly answering your questions I would lean towards multiple site collections and I generally agree with you on point 2, although if there's only
a small number of documents and simple structure then a single library might still make sense.

• Using a single NetConnection instance to dispatch multiple calls to backend

I have a scenario where calls to backend have to be dispatched in parallel because the calls are independent and dispatching them serially would cost performance.
If I use a single instance of NetConnection to send multiple requests to backend - one after the other without waiting for responses to previous requests to arrive - and there is a NetStatus event once the calls have been dispatched because, for example, the network connection went down, is it possible to find out which of the calls succeeded and which ones failed? Is it safe to assume that if the onResult function of a particular call's responder was not invoked, then that request did not reach the backend? If not, what is the recommended way to implement this? Should a separate instance of NetConnection be used for each call? How expensive would it be? How are multiple NetConnection instances connected to the same endpoint handled under the hood?
Thanks.

Joe,
I don´t know a specific reference for it, I remembered it because when I was looking the documentation on the site, I saw the reference "Support for multiple database connections" in the URL: APEX Listener New Features 2.0</title><meta name="Title" content="APEX Listener New Features 2.0…
I´ve tried to use APEX listener some time ago, but in a earlier version together with glassfish. So, since for me was only one database, I created the necessary amount of DAD´s on my database, each one for a specific port.
Check the link and you´ll see the same information I saw.
Thanks.
