Using Airport And Ethernet Together

Having read Christopher Breen's solution to using Airport and Ethernet together,
http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/mac911/2006/10/airportswitch/index.php
I am still wondering if this can apply to my situation. I have an Airport Exteme BS distributing the wireless signal on it's own node. Nothing is physically connected to the BS except an ethernet cable running to a hub which is connected to the cable modem. While my ISP service isn't supplying service faster than Airport will manage, no problem...but, I would like to have the advantage ethernet networking between my machines for all the advantages that ethernet speed can bring to that situation.
My connection to the internet is from WAN from the cable modem. I have an ethernet connection from the BS that I can run a cable back to say, an iBook. Will this work? I want wireless internet, but ethernet for machine to machine networking.

Helpful response, but I am uncertain this is what I am after. First, the hub is at the other end of the house, inconvenient to run a cable to it in this way. Presently, "Distribute IP Addresses" is turned off. This is way it had to be set since the AEBS is on a separate node. I just wonder why I can't run a cable from the AEBS LAN port back to the iBook. Looking for best possible speed when networking from my studio G4 while keeping the wireless internet setting.
Any reason making the config the way I am imagining will not work?

I can't stand peremptory affirmations like "Nothing is wrong with Safari".
Thousands of users can't be wrong (see the discussions).
If I read you the right way, it's never software' fault, it's the user who's the culprit.
    Amazing!
In this very case, the fact is we can't give to "christinefromfonthill" a good solution because weren't sitting in front of her Mac.
You give her a good advice which could, perhaps, lead to an improvement.
But must also admit that Safari is a very slow browser compared to Firefox or Chrome.
And you can't ignore all the problems which arose when upgrading to Lion and were related to the new build and specs of Safari 5.1.
The best example is the apparition of "garbage type" (use of Last Resort font) when reading numerous sites. This never occured before and is the direct consequence of Safari compliance to Web Open Type. This standard prohibits the use of Type 1 Postscript Fonts and is the reason why so many people are in trouble.
I use a Mac for more than 25 years.
I am a very "clean" user who hates the bells and whistles of third party.
My Mac is always up-to-date and despite all my Mac loving care, I run into some problems.
Imagine the nightmare which can occurs for the vulgum pecus who isn't, by definition, a power user aware of all the requirements for running a System in optimal conditions.
May be Safari is one step in advance on its time but lambda users are paying the price for it.

  • Possible to use Airport and Ethernet at same time?

Short question: I want to use my wired Ethernet connection for my local area network to access my file servers and other computers on my network, and a wireless Airport connection for Internet usage.
    Is this possible? How?
It seems that with both "on", I am connecting to both via Ethernet and it is forgoing the wireless network entirely even though it shows as connected to my wireless network.
    PowerMac G5 Dual 2.5GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

This is normally done like this.
Your Internet Service Provider furnishes you a Modem.
You run an Ethernet cabale from your ISP's Modem to the Wan Port, or uplink port on your wireless Router, ( You will have to purchase the Wireless Router.
Wireless Routers are available in 2 4 and 6 port varietys.
Anything you plug into the ports as many computers as you have ports for hard wired connections. This will allow for wired and wireless connections to the Internet and all can be used simultaniouslly.
Remember each machine you have connected will have to have the correct setting in the Network Preferences.
This can also be done with a Switch or a Hub each varys a little bit on the confiquration.. If you need more information be specific on exactly what all you are trying to hook up and what ISP you have the Modem they furnish, the exact router you are using and the number of machines and how they are set in the Network setting on each,
Normally any wireless router you purchase will give you a step by step on hoe to set it up, in the paper work that comes with them. Good Luck Don

  • Using Airport and Ethernet at the same time

I know that variations of this question have been posted already, but I think my problem is slightly different.
In our studio we have a printer connected to our Macs via a wired Ethernet LAN. We access the internet via Airport using a seperate Mac (not on the LAN) which is set up as a Software Base Station. We would like to be able to print directly from the internet without having to switch between networks. I've tried rearranging the order of the networks in the Network Port Configuration window in System Prefs but each time we try to print we get the message that Apple Talk is disabled (which it's definitely not), and that's as far as we get.
Any suggestions as to how we might solve this would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance
    Jason.

The solution is to use a dedicated wireless access point instead of the using the Mac as a software base station. The Mac acting as a base station is placing the wireless clients on a separate subnet.

  • Ability to use airport and ethernet simultaneously

On my old MBP I was able to bring up both the ethernet and the airport at the same time (on different networks). I migrated everything over to my new MBP and now I can only have one or the other connect. The second connects, but never gets an IP address (both use DHCP). By turning off one or the other I can switch between interfaces, but never have them both alive at the same time. One is connected to a 10. network, one connected to a 192.168 net. I have tried creating a new location with just the two interfaces in there but the outcome is exactly the same.
Is there a limitation on the new MBP that does not allow both interfaces to be alive at the same time? I use this to connect to my work network on the physical interface and connect to my home wireless for local printing and NAS support.
    Thanks

There should not be anything inherent to the new computer or OS that will disallow this. What happens if you assign manual IP address for the Ethernet interface?
If you used migration assistant to transfer over your data and settings - that may have messed up some things. Is it possible to verify if it works like before on a clean OSX install?

  • Using airport and ethernet at same time

I am networked from my intel macbookpro to a G5. I cannot connect to my airport at the same time i'm plugged into ethernet cable. Is there any way around this. This can be done when networking with mac based G5's. I guess it has something to do with the intel technology.

I guess it has something to do with the intel technology.
Actually no, you should be able to connect multiple interfaces (ethernet and wireless) concurrently.

  • Internet via airport AND ethernet dropping?

I have a new uMBP 13". When I connect to my home network it is the only computer on the network that will drop it's signal every 10 minutes at least. It searches for the network and reconnects a few seconds later but I have to manually search for the network and select.
I tried it with just the ethernet cable and airport turned off and the same thing happens.
I have an iMac connected wirelessly to the Netgear G router also running snow leopard which works fine.
I know there are discussions about airport dropping but this is airport and ethernet so where do I start with solving the problem?
    Thanks

    Hello William.
I've had similar problems, as described above. I have called AppleCare; I have found other threads on the forum(s) dealing with AirPort dropping connections; I have found much discussion of the subject on the web. There is a problem, and there appears to be no solution. Here is my related situation.
I have a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard; an oldish Netgear wireless router; and my wife is connected to this little LAN with my old iBook running Leopard. That machine, with Leopard, never loses a connection whereas my Macbook Pro with SL loses the Airport connection approximately every 24 hours. After talking with the ISP and Netgear I solved that problem initially by rebooting the router. Now, I find, I have only to turn AirPort off and then on again and the connection is reestablished.
Meanwhile, I tried switching over to ethernet. I turned Airport off, and ethernet on, with an automatically assigned DNS address. Again, to my amazement, the connection (with the internet) was dropped, again, about every 24 hours--long about 9:30 in the evening, for me. To reconnect ethernet to the web I only had to click "renew DHCP address" under the Advance tab in the network panel. I.e., the behavior was analogous to what I went thru with Airport.
I have to think that 1) since this doesn't happen to my wife's machine on the same network running Leopard, and since 2) the same thing happens whether I'm using AirPort or Ethernet to connect to the web, that this is something systemic in SL's networking innards.
I went over all of the router's connections and settings (no timing out issue), and I upgraded its firmware successfully. I've done all the usual troubleshooting gimmicks, and, of course, I've discussed this with AppleCare. They haven't the foggiest. Since the problem only recurs in a longish circadian cycle it's not something that can be dealt with over the phone.
I have to believe there's something wrong with the networking software in Snow Leopard. And, for what it's worth, if you do a search for this on Google there is a great deal of similar discussion.
Now my solution is simply to use Airport and to turn the program on and off via the menu bar. Unfortunately it raises cain with syncing--"Mingler" and iCal and iCal's system syncing software run away with the CPU. But that's another thread!
    All the best,
    Alarik

  • Airport and ethernet not working other computers are

I have a Mac Mini that I use daily. Today when I tried to get onto the internet the bars for airport in the menu bar were gone and a caution exclamation point was there. I restarted and that did not help. I then plugged in an ethnet cable and refigured the mini for ethernet. that did not work. I know the modem and router are working just fine and so is the ethernet since I have other computers on my home network and they all connect ok. Is the airport and ethernet card connected in that if one goes out so does the other?  The mini is 2-1/2 years old. I have a Wii and a satellite box on the same shelf as the mini and they both connect to the internet just fine. is my mini toast?

In system preferences- network do you have show airport  status in menu bar checked. To the left in network does airport show up. at the top in nework is it on.

  • Problems with Airport and Ethernet cable

    Hi
I wonder if anyone can help please, i have a really annoying little problem with my Airport Extreme. I use the internet either at my friends through his wireless internet or at an internet cafe via their ethernet cable.
Recently I keep getting an error message up every 20 seconds or so that says 'Could not find a PPPoE server' and i have to click connect in my built in ethernet settings before the cable or even the wireless internet connection works again and this is getting really frustrating. Is there any way to restore my internet connect settings so that using airport and plugging an ethernet cable in will be a bit more straight forward.
Any help that you can give me would be very much appreciated.
    Many Thanks
    Dave

Hello davehtaylor. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!

Is it possible that you have PPPoE enabled in either or both your AirPort and Built-in Ethernet settings on your Mac? If so, you should only need to disable them to remove this warning.
o AirPort: System Preferences > Network > Show > AirPort > PPPoE > Connect using PPPoE (disabled)
    o Built-in Ethernet: System Preferences > Network > Show > Built-in Ethernet > PPPoE > Connect using PPPoE (disabled)

    hi ian
you could also try verifying if the jar libraries containing your Document and Paragraph classes are defined in your class path OR if you are using an IDE, did you include that under your LIbraries?
The previous suggestion below also is a stop-gap to the library inclusion problem.
    Hope that helps

    Hi Professor66,
I have a couple of suggestions for you regarding this issue. Here are two links to users who have posted similar questions to yours and have found their answers in the responses to their posts:
Safari hangs when loading web pages. | Apple Support Communities
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3784708
Safari loading blank pages | Apple Support Communities

I would suggest that you first follow the troubleshooting that the OP did in the second link, which is to test in a new user account to see if the behavior is consistent. If it is, you may need to address the issue at a software level by re-installing Safari. More information on this process can be found in the following article:

SELECT 'SELECT ' || DISTINCT COLUMN || ' FROM DUAL UNION ALL '
FROM TABLE;Whenever you have a problem, please post CREATE TABLE and INSERT statments for a little sample data, and the results you want from that data.
The example you posted has so many mistakes, it's hard to know what you're trying to do.
COLUMN, DISTINCT and TABLE are all Oracle keywords, and shouldn't be used for actual columnor table names, and using them for aliases is just asking for trouble.
When using SELECT DISTINCT, the keyword DISTINCT must come immediately after SELECT.
If you want to assign an alias to a column, it must be at the very end of the expression that defines the column. You can't assign an alias to part of an expression. If you want to do that, use a sub-query.
Here's a query that uses both SELECT DISTINCT and ||:
    SELECT DISTINCT
            job || deptno    AS jd
FROM    scott.emp;Edited by: Frank Kulash on May 13, 2011 2:52 PM

I don't know much about computers, so please be patient. I started using Airport and I recently noticed a "network" option right below "Macintosh HD". When I click on "network" it shows "b67446000000" with a computer monitor icon and "connection failed". When I right click on this and select "Get more info" it displays nothing, just the spinning wheel. When I select "Connect As" it asked for my password to connect to "Server b67446000000". This may have been on my computer since I got it, I never paid much attention. Is this part of the operating system or has someone hijacked my computer? Why would I need a server...it's just me and my one computer? Maybe someone has hacked in through Airport? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Is your airport a Time Capsule.. if so it is able to serve files on the network.
The number is the MAC address of the network in the router.
Please reset the apple router whatever is and redo the setup.. this time give it a simple name.. eg TCgenX where X is the actual gen of the unit and give it a simple wireless name.. TCwifi and a simple password with 8-20 characters mix of upper and lower case and numbers.
Perhaps even better give me a screenshot from the computer of the airport utility showing me the Airport with its MAC address.
