Using Data Acess Command Beans as Model
Hey guys,
actually I try to get data from some EJBs (Entity Beans) into my Web Dynpro application.
Inside SDN I found a tutorial which uses the 'Data Access Command Bean pattern' to connect the EJB-Backend to a WD application (The tutorial is called 'Using EJBs in Web Dynpro applications. You find it in the 'Web Dynpro Sample Applications and Tutorials' subsection in the 'SAP NetWeaver -> Application Server -> Web Dynpro' section). The author writes a 'Command Bean' which is bound to the WD application as a model. This bean has an 'execute()' method which calls two business methods from a session bean. Because of data binding the private attributes from the bean class are filled with the data in the corresponding model class.
Everything is fine so far.
But in my WD application I want to handle two or more context elements from the model node with the command bean. Therefore I guess I have to call the execute() method for every context element of the model node, cause the private attributes of the command bean will only hold the data of the current context element (that's what I assume). Well the point is that every call of execute() will result in an insert operation on the database.
In my opinion it would be a better way to give all context elements in one batch to the EJB-Backend so that the connection to the database have to be opened and closed only once instead after every call of the execute method.
I wonder now if it is possible to pass the whole context elements collection to the EJB-Backend. Did anyone have some experience with this?
Thanks in advance to all answers!
Regards,
Torben
You can simply provide an attribute in your Command Bean of type Collection. This can hold a collection of DTOs (<a href="http://java.sun.com/blueprints/corej2eepatterns/Patterns/TransferObject.html">Data Transfer Object</a> pattern... also known as Transfer Object or Value Object) to which you can bind a context node.
This attribute can then be populated with an appropriate collection of DTOs explicitly in your code... or optionally, you can bind a UI Element of type Table, for example to the associated context node. Then provide some functionality in your UI to make it possible for users to add elements to that table.
When comes the time to call your back-end, you can pass that collection directly to your business delegate (or Session Bean if you're interacting directly with that):
public void execute()
bizDelegate.insertSomething(this.getDtoCollection());

Adhoc Reporting using Data Sources instead of Report Model
Hi Gurus,
I'm working on SSRS 2008. I'm trying to create Adhoc Report using Report Builder 3.0. To select Data Source, both *.rsds and *.smdl are listed. I selected a Data Source which points to a SQL database. When I add New datasets, I'm able to add the fields and
it automatically detect relationships (Joins) using Primary Key and Foreign Key defined in the tables. I'm also able to edit the query. I ran the report and it ran successfully.
My question is I couldn't find any documentation regarding using Data Source for Adhoc Reporting. MS SQL documentation and forums insists that Report Model is required for Adhoc Reporting.
Please let me know if someone tried to create Adhoc Report using Data Source instead of Report Model. While I understand there are more benefits using Report Model (define entities/attributes, show/hide entity/attributes, organize entities/attributes etc.),
I just want to know if this is possible.
Are there any known limitation using this method?
Thanks In Advance!Hi Ereswaran,
Yes, we can create ad hoc report using report using data source instead of Report Model. Ad hoc reports typically are used to answer a specific question at appoint in time, so consequently people don’t spend a lot of time arranging and formatting the data
in a precise way. Other report development tools are available in Reporting Services to support more sophisticated reporting requirements.
Using Report Builder, we can build a simple report that display data form a single data source as defined by a report model. This tool is most useful for business users who need access to information but lack the skills to write a SQL query. If we have full
experience of SQL query, of course we can use data source instead of Report Model.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

JavaBean Models, Command Bean and J2EE Design Pattern
Hello,
I have read the available "How To", Using EJBs in Web Dynpro Applications where the author mentions that one should use a Command Bean (according to J2EE Design Patterns) so that one can invoke business methods in a Session Bean from our Web Dynpro Application. Well, although, I have read some available articles in the internet about J2EE design patterns, I still have some questions about command beans and its usage in Web Dynpro applications.
I have developed a WD App which uses EJBs to read data from the DB.
Let's suppose I only have two tables: BOOKS and AUTHORS.
Lets also suppose I have to Entity Beans (one for each table) and a Session Bean with two methods: Book[] getAllBooks() and Author[] getAllAuthors();
I also have a Command Bean which I imported in my WD App.
My questions are:
How should I design my Command Bean?
Can I have only one Command Bean with two methods each calling one of the methods of the Session Bean?
Or instead should I design two Command Beans, one for each call?
In the last case do the methods must be named <b>execute</b> or can I name them whatever I want?
Furthermore, how should I store the data in my command bean? In instance variables?
If so, can I use array of a class representing a record in the database table (for instance, classes Book and Author) or do I have to store the data in a generic collection (such as ArrayList for instance)?
I ask this last question because if I try to store the data in an array when I am importing the Command Bean as a JavaBean model I always get an error.
One last question: Can the Command Bean execute method directly return the data or should I always store the data in an instance variable an then get it using getter methods?
I know this questions are more about J2EE Design Patterns and JavaBeans specification than they are about Web Dynpro but I also have doubts about the rules that the command bean must obey in order to accomplish a successful JavaBean model import in WD.
Some guidance or tips would be highly appreciated.
King RegardsI have the same problem.
Does anyone know the solution?
Thanks

How can I restore a deleted directory in Subversion Repository to use Data Modeler?
Hello,
i search a solution to restore a deleted Directory in Subversion Repository. But i can't find a button, menu item or documentation.
I'm on WIN7 and use Data Modeler 4.0.3.853 and Developer 4.0.3.16.84.
Thanks for your help,
KathrinHi Philip,
thanks for your help. I know this solution on the command line. But ... i have to teach my co-workers to use data modeler, developer and Subversion. They have only these Software on their pc's and i hope for a uncomplicated solution directly in data modeler, because they are a menu item, which to click open the window. But you can't do anything.
The Folder "WoP" was deleted directly under root. My idea was as follows:
1. I use "Show log" to find the right revision.
2. I checked out the whole repository "Schulung" for the right revision.
3. Into my workind copy folder are "WoP" on the right revision (235).
4. I create a new folder "WoP" on "Schulung" and checkout it
5. I open the WoP.dmd and save it on checked out folder "WoP" to add version control.
Handicap: Subversion recognize "WoP" as "NEW" not as "RESTORE"
But i don't use the comand line for svn respectively i haven't to teach my data modeler user in command line svn.
Do you evaluate other problems or handicaps for "my way"?
Do you know if will there be more user-friendly option in the Data Modeler in the future?
Thanks and greets,

Excel data source and the use of add command
HI, Looking for suggestions on how to work with multiple inputs that cannot be joined directly. Here's the background.
The Report currently reads in two different Ecel files and uses 3 SQL commands to query an Oracle Database. I need to join the 5 data sources and am having issues with the 2 excel files. In one file I need to be able to derive a field based on another column in the file In order to create the join condition to the SQL commands. I'd equate this to a case statement in SQL, but how goes one do that using the 'add command' feature? What is the syntax?
Next I would need to join (left outer) the two excel files using two fields from file A (a1, a2) and 3 fields from file B (b1,b2,b3), where a1=b1 and b2 <= a2 <= b3 when rows from A exist in B. If row A does not exist in B then we still want it in the report and available to left outer join to the 3 oractab data sources.
runtime is also a concern.
Any Suggestions?hi Elena,
in this case the use of subreports is not recommended. that's because you're exporting to excel and you need data in columns across the report. subreports will not, unfortunately, give you what you need.
this would bring you back to joining the datasources. what i would recommend is looking into using 'oracle database link' to link your oracle db to excel files. here's one article as an example but you may be able to find a better one. if you have questions on this please ask them on an oracle forum as the syntax that you need will be database specific.
a lot of databases have this type of technology which allows you to create a view to other data. sql server has 'linked servers', sap hana has 'smart data access'. essentially you are creating a non-materialized view to the external data. then this view is available on the main oracle server where you established this connection. this should be a lot easier than trying to bring a bunch of command objects together off independent datasources inside of crystal.

Calling Portal Service using result as Java Bean Model impossible?
Hello folks,
we try to achieve to call a portal service (working) which gives as a result a list of object of type com.foo.Report. We want to make use of this class as a model class, so we have the class as a model node in the context. The class itself is part of the service DC.
Unfortunately at run time it gives us a NoClassDefFound Exception of com.foo.Report.
As the com.foo.Report is part of the same DC as the service, it is no option to add the PAR public part to the used DCs of the WD DC because then there is this type conflict when we call the service (service look up). Or am I wrong and this is the way to do it? I mean I struggled quite a while to get the service look up right and needed to remove all the PAR/lib used DCs from the used DCs of the WD Project, when I got it working this Model error came up. I also tried to put the Model class in a separate DC but that caused the same error.
how is it possible to call a Portal service from WD and using it's return vale as a Model class
our system iis 7.0.17

Full subject : Enforcing integrity using oracle specific data base commands .v. using front end.
It ought to be generally accepted that it is better to enforce integrity directly in the data base using constraints, dependencies, triggers etc rather than leaving it to specific front end programmes.
In my view, the chief advantages - of enforcing integrity directly in the data base - are:
(1) No process can violate the integrity.
(2) Being server centric, these commands run on the server and so can be easily sized in one place.
(3) One time data migration (imports) into the system using Oracle tools or SQL commands would also need to conform to the integrity constraints. Thus an implementor would be assured that the basic data is alright.
I am faced with a situation where we are about to implement a new Oracle based package. During data migration, when we discovered that there are no integrity constraints built into the target data base, the package vendor asserted that it is not necessary to build in integrity into the database. This seems to be an extreme and risky view.
Further, it is argued by the package vendor that putting constraints directly in the data base would significantly increase the needed resources (RAM) on the server. In my view, this increase is trivial and anyway, hardware costs are crashing day by day.
In the absence of integrity checks in the data base, it seems to me that every program would have to extra zero value work to ensure integrity of the end user data. It will still never be complete.
I would like to know the pros and cons of implementing without integrity constraints.

OK.It's a shame you seem to be so far into the process and committed to this vendor. I once had a vendor tell us his product would run on Oracle but they recommended MS SQL Server because "oracle can't handle more than 5 concurrent sessions." I made sure that vendor didn't make the short list. -
Loose subversion password when using data modeler on the same svn reposit.
Hello,
We are on windows Xp sp3 with tortoire svn. Data modeler 3.0.0 665
We use data modeler to edit our Data model.
There is a svn repository for all data and source of our projet.
Problem :
When running data modeler and open a model which is on the svn repository, a update on the repository with svn ask always the svn password.
This problem come also if you make a simple repository refresh on data modeler.
It seem that data modeler override always the file in directory D:\Documents and Settings\...\Application Data\Subversion\auth\svn.simple which contains subversion authentification for svn.
It forget the svn password and put the file read only.
Do you know this problem ?
is any solution or work arround exist ?
For exemple, we can do a script which always replace the modified file. I try to make it read only without success.
Regards.Hi,
some of the Data Modeler svn-functionality is inherited from JDeveloper.
Unfortunately, working with outer svn tools (as Tortoise) is a well-known issue for JDeveloper, because it encrypts and stores the password in another file, and tries to protect the file that you've mentioned.

Using JODA Date in Entity Bean
We are planning to use JODA open source in our project which is actually a replacement for Java Calendar and Date. Like to know how can we map the JODA Datetime to date columns in the table. Refer the link http://edocs.bea.com/wls/docs60/ejb/cmp.html for the supported data types. Is there any server specific extension available to support new data types.
If not, we should still use util.Date in the entity bean but expose as DateTime outside. We'll do the conversion between util.Date and DateTime in the entity bean since we don't want to expose java.util.Date outside teh entity bean.
But this restriction will fail for finder queries implemented through EJB QL unless the servic emethid calling the finder do the conversion to util.Date before calling. Is there a clean way to use JODA DateTime in Entity BeanEJB doesn't support identity field. EJB expects you set primary key values explicitly. There is a well known pattern that makes use of a session bean to generate entity bean primary key. Your best option is to use BMP or give up auto increment identity fields.

Re: [SunONE-JATO] Re: How to use a tiled view without a model
I'm not sure what is different for you now. You still parse the string
and put it into a data structure. Before the data structure was a
vector, in JATO its just a model with a "hidden" data structure (a hash
map).
MVC only really comes into play when you talk about where your write
this code, and where the data structure is being stored. So really, JATO
takes care of half of the MVC'ness of it all (where the data is store).
You just decide where to be the code to populate the model.
Make sense?
Is there something different required of you in JATO in this scenario
that I am not grasping?

Thanks for the feedback.
The problem I was solving involved a single string, which contained
delimited subsets of information.
The string looked like
this:"time|analyst|description|time|analyst|description|..."
In ND, I parsed it apart into it's components (time vector, analyst vector,
description vector), populated the repeated.
With JATO, how would I make a model for something that doesn't have a
database component like this?
I'm pretty new to this MVC thing, so bear with me.

Subject: Re: [SunONE-JATO] Re: How to use a tiled view without a model
I guess the only thing "weird" (for lack of a better term) about what
you are doing is that your are populating the model on the "display
cycle". Typically, the cycle goes like this:
Request -> populate model -> update data store -> retrieve data to
populate model -> display data
some of the above steps are optional but hopefully you get the point I
am making.
So what you are doing is:
Request -> populate model/display data
If it works for you, then it's not necessarilly wrong. But I would
probably have my model populated before I forwarded to the target
(displaying view bean) or at a minimum, in the begin display event of
the view bean or the tiled view, but not during the iteration of the
tiled view.

Command bean or webservice for accessing EJB
Hi Experts,
I Want to access an Enterprise archieve DC created for EJB Module DC, through WebDynpro DC.
Now I know that there are two ways to access EAR DC through webDynpro:
1) Command bean
2) Web Services
Can anybody suggest the pros and cons of this two methods?
Also please suggest which one to choose.
Regards,
Ashish ShahHi,
to access EJBs from WD, you can use the EJB3.0 model importer (a new feature introduced with NW CE). There's a good tutorial explaining that <a href="http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nwce10/helpdata/en/45/f7f744aea471fae10000000a1553f6/frameset.htm">here</a>.
The Web services way should also work, but it means that you "wrap" the EJB, which is not needed in this case, I believe.
Hope it helps! -
