Using DBCA to duplicate a 10gR2 RAC DB to another box...

Hi All :)
Background:
=========
I am attempting to use DBCA to create a database based on a template dump (structure and data) from my source system.
My source systems is/was RAC enabled and was using a NFS "clustered" file system for shared storage (not RAW or ASM).
The target DB $ORACLE_HOME was "cloned" from the source system using an Apps methodology called RapidClone (which is a supported way to install a new DB Techstack for use with Apps - Apendix - A of 406982.1).
I am running DBCA from the new target $ORACLE_HOME however it is really only a software home at present...meaning, the tns listeners are not correct, there exists no valid pfile, etc....nothing that really associates the instance to this home.
QUESTIONS:
==========
1. Let's remove Apps from the picture for a minute. If I was attempting to clone a RAC DB to another box, and I did a software only install on the target box and used DBCA to create the DB based on my existing DB template......would I need to "prep" the new target DB $ORACLE_HOME before running the DBCA create from template script??
2. Because this is RAC...I fully expect to have to add the instances and listeners to CRS manually, and understand I will need to configure the listener and tnsnames files....But does DBCA have the ability to at least bring up the new target system DB on a single node such that I can create my spfiles, and listeners and such?
3. Would it be advisable to disable RAC, simplifying my source system configuration, and then create my DBCA template based on the system "data as well as structure" and then create the new target DB with the more simplistic configuration and then re-enable RAC?
Thanks for any guidance or help.

Wow Sybrand...
You are just full of hostility man. People using Oracle products come from differing backgrounds and while your strong suit might be RMAN and the DB....others might know more about framework, java or the middleware products...and come here seeking guidance...and then get insulted by folks like you.
DBCA can be run from the command line, which is my objective later. Yes, RMAN is better suited to do what I am trying to do however I have additional existing (Apps specific) code which is NOT suited to RMAN.
I would suggest you see the DBCA docs:
This is just one example:
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14196/install003.htm#i1008647-->scroll down to "From an existing database (structure and data)"....
Also...try the following search in google:
DBCA clone database....
You will see many people seem to advocate using this method of database cloning and it has worked for them and not just for empty databases.
I would be appreciative if responses would be limited to those with experience in using DBCA to duplicate an existing database....not with criticisms and reasons why some other tool should be used.
Thanks in advance.

  • Single to rac using dbca

i am trying to convert single node to rac using dbca. (11.2.0.3 on Linux5 )
During the template, creation i am choosing the Structure only Option ( I am not backing up the data ie., structure as well as data) as the
single instance running (TEST) is on the same cluster and i want to retain the datafile path also which is already on shared storage.
While creating db using template for rac conversion, the dbca screen doesn't proceed further after choosing the Storage.
All, i wanted to know, if this way it is possible or not.. ie without backup.   The documentation says only about taking the backup along with strcuture.
I know rconfig works fine in this way; why not dbca.

  • Solaris 10 + Oracle 10gR2 RAC question

    Hello everyone
Has anyone come across the case where the CRS services of Oracle cause
the public interface to get turned off and then restored at random
time intervals? To elaborate, we have a 2 node cluster database.
Solaris 10, Oracle 10gR2 RAC with patch 10.2.0.3 applied. No SUN
clustering is involved. When the cluster software is down (nodeapps,
asm, database instances all down) /var/adm/messages show nothing. When
we start nodeapps on the 2 nodes(thus initiating some form of
communication between the nodes), at random time intervals we get
"interface ce0 turned off and interface ce0 restored" in /var/adm/
messages. When we check the status of the RAC, we see that one node's
vip has been assigned to the other. This on/off behaviour of the NIC
can be eliminated only if we continuously PING it from a another
    client in the network.
As a matter of fact, the RAC and the RDBMS work perfectly when we keep
pinging the 2 nodes from an other client on the network. We even
managed to run a long batch job, distributed on cluster managed
services on the 2 instances, and it completed after 9 hours without
    any problems.
Does anyone have a hint on this behaviour? Is there some sort of
timeout for the network cards? Some power saving features? Googling
around I came across the new Containers feature available on Solaris
    10. Is there a way that I can verify that either RAC or the RDBMS is
running in "container" mode ( since the solaris and Oracle
installation was not performed by me)? Any other ideas?
    Thank you for reading

Im an Oracle guy - not the SA type -
But on ours - the SA configured this cluster incorrectly. We use veritas. instead of making ipmp groups for the interfaces - he built the cluster according to veritas docs. That is - he has two publics - on difference interfaces and different privates on different interfaces. oracle can only two interfaces - no matter if its a ipmp group or a device name. one is used for private- the other is used for public - So sure the veritas cluster filesystems will survive - but the Oracle Cluster will not - nodes will reboot -
Is your system set up incorrectly as i described above? if it is - a quick test would be - turn down the other interfaces - and only leave the two interfaces you mention above up that you configured for Oracle CRS
This other sharp sa was able to go through the arp table and see duplicate IPs - and the routing was attempted via an interface that oracle doesnt see. You can not define two different interfaces public - and two different interfaces for private -

  • Question about DBCA generate script o create RAC database 2 node cluster

Question about creating two node RAC database 11g after installing and configuration 11g clusterware. I've used DBCA to generate script to create a rac database. I've set
environment variable ORACLE_SID=RAC and the creating script creates instance of RAC1 and RAC2. My understanding is that each node will represent a node, however there should only be one database with a name of 'RAC'. Please advise

You are getting your terminology mixed up.
You only have one database. Take a look, there are one set of datafiles on shared storage.
You have 2 instances which are accessing one database.
Database name is RAC. Instance names are RAC1, RAC2, etc, etc.
Also, if you look at the listener configuration and if your tnsnames is setup properly then connecting to RAC will connect you to either one of the instances wheras connecting to RAC1 will connect you to that instance.

  • 10gR2 RAC on Solaris 10

    Hi,
I am looking for "step by step install & configure" guide to setup 10gr2 RAC on Solaris 10.
I got the following Doc "ID: Note:317257.1" from metalink. Looks like I need to configure Solaris 10 containers and Solaris Zones for 10g RAC.
Is there another way to setup 10gr2 RAC on Solaris 10 without using the Solaris 10 containers just like (Solaris 9 or plain OS)?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    R-

Thanks for all your inputs. I finally got 10g RAC installed and running.
I learned that there is no way to install Oracle software and configure ASM during installation. I had to install “Software Only” then configure ASM at the later time, then that will work.
    Good luck to you all.

  • Confusion over DBCA script generated for manual RAC DB creation

    Version:11.2.0.4/RHEL 6.3
We would like to create our 3-node RAC DB manually.  DBCA cannot meet our requirement because our redo log files, datafiles, tempfiles and control files are placed in a complicated manner . If we use DBCA , we will have to spend a lot of time configuring to our requirements after the DB creation.
I generated the DB creation scripts from DBCA (DB Name = BRCFPRD )
DBCA placed the db creation scripts in the specified directory in all the 3 nodes !!
They all have almost the same contents . The only difference being the instance name (BRCFPRD12.sql for Node2, ... etc).
Scripts in each node have the createDB.sql statement which has CREATE DATABASE "BRCFPRD" statement. Why is this ? The database need to be created only from one node. Then why did DBCA place createDB.sql in all nodes ?
I just want to run the script from just one node , say Node1 and it should create the 3-Node RAC DB. How can I do this manually?

  • DELETE DATAFILE (database) FROM ASM not using dbca

    Hi All
    I have RAC(2 node) on Windows 2003 EE, Oracle 10g R2
How i can delete file from my asm instance?
For example, i create database manualy then i want delete this database? how i can delete file from asm? dbca dont see this instance.
a long time ago, i have also TEST db, i delete this db using dbca but in ASM (EM console) i still see this db, there are no file but i see "word" TEST how i can delete that?
    thanks in advice

  • ORA-03113 when using dbca

I install 92040 on redhat AS21. When I create RAC db using dbca, I'll get "ORA-03113: End of file on communication channel" I have checked many doc on metalink. Most of that talk about linux kernel memory setting. I checked shmmax shmmni shmmal and echo 250 32000 100 128 > /proc/sys/kernel/sem. and echo 65536 /proc/sys/fs/file-max It doesn't work. Could someone tell me is there any other solution. (Both of two node physical memory is 1G and swap space is 2.5G)
    Thanks

I have solve the problem by myself. I'll list how to fix.Maybe it could help u.
1.I change shmmax to half physical memory(I have tried it before ,it doesn't work.I don't think it is keypoint)
    2. echo 250 1000 100 100 > /proc/sys/kernel/sem
    3. I change shmmin to 1
    then it works!
I'm not really understand about this kernel config.Could someone show me where to get detail information?

  • Oracle 10gR2 RAC - ASM question

    Hi
I have a question regarding the ASM storage. Let says I have a system here running Oracle 10gR2 RAC and would like to add a new/extend the current DATA disk group with more disk space. How do I do that? will it affect the existing data stored inside there?

So to add a little more to the discussion. Let's say your storage administrator presents you a LUN and is nice enough to add a partition of say 7G. (/dev/sdo1).
Now you need to take /dev/sdo1 stamp it and alter your storage group.
For illustration purposes I shall use rac1 and rac2 as my dual instance RAC and add to the asm group ARCH.
    As root on rac1
    /etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk ARCH2 /dev/sdo1
    then run
    /etc/init.d/oracleasm listdisks
to make sure ARCH2 shows up.
    On rac2 you run
    /etc/init.d/oracleasm listdisks
You don't see ARCH2 so then run
    /etc/init.d/oracleasm scandisks
    then
    /etc/init.d/oracleasm listdisks
    Now you should see ARCH2
Ok the asm stamps are in sync now.
    Back to rac1
    su - oracle
set ORACLE_SID to asm instance and use sqlplus
    sqlplus / as sysasm
If you query V$ASM_DISK you will see your disk with a header_status of PROVISIONED
    that's good ...
    NOw while still in sqlplus
Let's bump up the asm_power_limit so rebalancing runs faster
    alter system set asm_power_limit=5 scope=both ;
If your asm instance are sharing the same spfile you only need do this on one instance; otherwise run the command both on all asm instances.
    Lastly
    ALTER DISKGROUP ARCH ADD DISK 'ORCL:ARCH2' ;
Now you can query V$ASM_OPERATION and watch ASM do it's magic of rebalancing.
That's it. All done while the DB is up and running.
How does that work for you?
