Using File class

For an assignment I have I was told to make a constructor that inputs a File object, I think i properly created this object in my main program but when I put
public classname(File file1) for my constructor it gives me the error "File cannot be resolved to a type".
my questions are:
-how do i properly use a File object as a parameter for a constructor?
-how do i do test for the end of a file with a File object?

you didn't fully name the File classhmm i dont follow i guess.If you didn't use an import statement, you'd have to say java.io.File when you used it in the constructor argument list.
Did you use an import statement?do you mean import java.io.File;? i do
have that if thats what your asking.Yes that's what I meant.
You're doing something else wrong, then, but I can't tell what since it'll be in code that you didn't post.
Do you have any other classes called "File"?
You don't. File doesn't have any concept of that. Itdoesn't really make sense. It only makes sense with
things that step through a file's contents, like a
FileInputStream.
ok well my example in my book shows a program
stepping through a File using a scanner and
.nextLine(), if this is how i read the file what
would be returned when it came to the end? does throw
IOException have something to do with this?You would use "hasNextLine" and if it returns false, you stop. You don't specifically check for the end of file in this case. Use the various "hasNext" methods depending on what you're trying to do.
Apparently Scanner doesn't throw IOException in nextLine(), and anyway using exceptions to find the end of input is the wrong way to go about this.

  • Can't write to a file using File class

    hi every body
    I wanna write into a file for logging purpose, but I always
    got an error when I write to the file ...
    the code is:
    if(!logFile.isOpen)
    logFile.open("text", "write")
    var date = new Date();
    if(logFile.canWrite){
    trace(">> I will write ...");
    var message = "TIME >> " + date.getDate().toString() +
    " : ERROR CODE >> " + infoObject.code + " : LINE NO >>
    " + infoObject.lineno.toString();
    logFile.write(message);
    logFile.flush();
    logFile.close();
    I got an error says: File operation writeln failed
    and also may say: File operation flush failed
    thanx

    First off, don't use finalize(). It is never guaranteed to actually run.
    Just add a cleanup() method to your Account class that flushes and closes the writer; and call it before you exit main().
    Now, as for your Date problem
    java.util.Date certainly does have a no-args constructor.
    java.sql.Date does not.
    Make sure you aren't getting a name collision. (Hint: If you're doing import java.foo.* Stop Doing That. just import the classes you need)

  • Help using scanner class to count chars in file

    Hi all, I am learning Java right now and ran into a problem. I need to use the Scanner class to accurately count the number of chars in a file including the line feed chars 10&13.
    This what I have and it currently reports a 201 byte file as having 194 chars:
         File file = new File(plainFile);
         Scanner inputFile = new Scanner(file);
         numberOfChars = 0;
         String line;
         //count characters in file
         while (inputFile.hasNextLine())
              line = inputFile.nextLine();
              numberOfChars += line.length();
    I know there are other ways using BufferedReader, etc but I have to use Scanner class to do this.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Add jar files and use those classes at the runtime

    Hi All,
    I need to add some jar files at the runtime depends on which the user selects where the jar file is located and i need to import those classes in other class for some functionalities . I could add jar files by using the URLClassLoader and Class.forName("myjar.myclassname") is also succeeded and i have no clue how to use those classes with in the jar file as i couldn't import those classes also in the source because the jar files are being added at the runtime(This leads to class not found exception at the compile time).
    I had found a complicated way of using those classes after being added at the run time as below.
       Class clazz = Class.forName(myClass);
                final Method method = clazz.getDeclaredMethod(requiredMethod, new Class[]{URL.class});
                final Object returned = method.invoke(clazz.newInstance(), new Object[]{request}); but, its really pain to use in this way in all the places.
    Does any of you have simpler suggestions on how to achieve this?
    Thanks,
    Venky.

    Thanks jschell. Yes, you are right. I had found that using reflection API is the only way to load classes at the run time. But according to our application using reflection makes the application little complex, so while start of the application or during other modifications, i am overwriting my jar file to the latest one using FileChannel class as below
          FileChannel ic = new FileInputStream("new.jar").getChannel();
          FileChannel oc = new FileOutputStream("old.jar").getChannel();
          ic.transferTo(0, ic.size(), oc);
          ic.close();
          oc.close();After this code is executed, our application totally uses the new jar file.It is little fast than using reflection. Is this a good idea?

  • Using FileIOInteractionSpec Class For Moving File using File Adapter

    Hi All,
    I am tring to use FileIOInteractionSpec class to move a file from one location to another. The problem is that I am not able to override its properties from BPEL, here is how the FileAdapter.jca file looks like which moves the file from one location to another:
    <adapter-config name="MoveFileService" adapter="File Adapter" wsdlLocation="MoveFileService.wsdl" xmlns="http://platform.integration.oracle/blocks/adapter/fw/metadata">
    <connection-factory location="eis/FileAdapter"/>
    <endpoint-interaction portType="MoveFile_ptt" operation="MoveFile">
    <interaction-spec className="oracle.tip.adapter.file.outbound.FileReadInteractionSpec">
    <property name="DeleteFile" value="true"/>
    <property name="PhysicalDirectory" value="C:\FileRead"/>
    <property name="FileName" value="dummy.txt"/>
    </interaction-spec>
    </endpoint-interaction>
    *<endpoint-interaction portType="MoveFile_ptt" operation="Move">*
    *<interaction-spec className="oracle.tip.adapter.file.outbound.FileIoInteractionSpec">*
    *<property name="Type" value="MOVE"/>*
    *<property name="SourcePhysicalDirectory" value="C:\FileRead"/>*
    *<property name="SourceFileName" value="dummy.txt"/>*
    *<property name="TargetPhysicalDirectory" value="C:\FileRead2"/>*
    *<property name="TargetFileName" value="dummyCopy.txt"/>*
    *</interaction-spec>*
    *</endpoint-interaction>*
    </adapter-config>
    In the above code, I have hard-coded the values, and it works fine like that.
    However, when I try to override these values by defining properies in BPEL invoke's tag, the values are getting passed as null.
    Here is the invoke tag code, tried the following 2 combinations:
    <invoke name="InvokeFileMove"
    inputVariable="InvokeFileMove_MoveFile_InputVariable"
    partnerLink="MoveFileService" portType="ns1:MoveFile_ptt"
    operation="Move" bpelx:invokeAsDetail="no">
    <bpelx:inputProperty name="jca.file.SourcePhysicalDirectory" value="C:\FileRead"/>
    <bpelx:inputProperty name="jca.file.SourceFileName" value="dummy.txt"/>
    <bpelx:inputProperty name="jca.file.TargetPhysicalDirectory" value="C:\FileRead2"/>
    <bpelx:inputProperty name="jca.file.TargetFileName" value="dummyCopy.txt"/>
    </invoke>
    And
    <invoke name="InvokeFileMove"
    inputVariable="InvokeFileMove_MoveFile_InputVariable"
    partnerLink="MoveFileService" portType="ns1:MoveFile_ptt"
    operation="Move" bpelx:invokeAsDetail="no">
    <bpelx:inputProperty name="SourcePhysicalDirectory" value="C:\FileRead"/>
    <bpelx:inputProperty name="SourceFileName" value="dummy.txt"/>
    <bpelx:inputProperty name="TargetPhysicalDirectory" value="C:\FileRead2"/>
    <bpelx:inputProperty name="TargetFileName" value="dummyCopy.txt"/>
    </invoke>
    These four properties are not visible in Invoke -> Properties tab as well.
    Could you please suggest how can I override the jca's values for FileIOInteractionSpec class?

    I have successfully used this API and it works fine.
    Try to use variables which contains values like "dummyCopy.txt" etc.
    Here is what I used :
    <bpelx:inputProperty name="jca.file.SourceDirectory"
    variable="inputDirectory"/>
    <bpelx:inputProperty name="jca.file.SourceFileName"
    variable="inputFileName"/>
    <bpelx:inputProperty name="jca.file.TargetDirectory"
    variable="destinationDirectory"/>
    <bpelx:inputProperty name="jca.file.TargetFileName"
    variable="inputFileName"/>
    Pass approppriate values into the above given variables and try.
    Hopefully it should work.
    Let us know, how it goes !

  • Using tie-classed to change name of file uploaded through FTP protocol srvr

    Hi,
    I'm trying to use the extendedPreAddItem (or Post) method in an S_TieFolder class to automatically change the name of a file (an S_PublicObject) when it enters a Folder (via an FTP put upload).
    I'm fiddling around with code like this:
    AttributeValue val = AttributeValue.newAttributeValue(newDocName);
    val.setName(Document.NAME_ATTRIBUTE);
    rightpo.setAttribute(val);
    But it does not work: in the FTP client the filename is indeed changed, but somewhere at lower levels the original filename is still being used...
    Any helpfull ideas would be appreciated.
    TOon

    I'm aware of this... My ftp-client (FTP-Voyager) will prompt me if I "put" a file that already exists in the remote folder, and ask me to go ahead and replace the file, or cancel the put-operation.
    However in this case the ftp-client sees file X' remotely and I'm putting file X, so it does not prompt me at all...
    Stopping and restarting the FTP-client (in case it caches remote folder-contents...) does not change the behaviour.
    Timewise this is what happens:
    1) I put file X.
    2) My S_TieFolder class (extendedPreAddItem) changes it's name into X'.
    3) The ftp-put successfully completes
    4) I refresh the remote folder contents and see the X' name instead of the original X name.
    5) I re-put X (and would now like to have it changed into file X'').
    6) Before my S_TieFolder code executes, something (I'm still suspecting the cm-sdk) deletes the X' file first... ==> the logfile does not show any communication with the ftp-client here now.
    7) Then my S_TieFolder code executes and changes the name into X''.
    8) I refresh the remote folder contents: File X' disappears, file X (just re-put) changes into X''.
    More testing has shown that I'm also not able to delete these files (whose names have been changed by S_TieFolder): 'file does not exist' error.
    I need to know:
    a) If changing the files name on-the-fly using S_Tie class is supported at all.
    and
    b) if so, what am I doing wrong?
    Thanks
    Toon

  • How to import .jar files in order to use the classes within this file

    hello guys,
    I'm just wondering how can i import .jar files in order to uses the classes within this file.
    let's take an example:
    i have a folder in which I have many .jar files which contain classes to be called. the full path of this folder is set in the Classpath inside the enviroment variables.
    so does anyone have any idea how can i import these .jar files so i can use the classes?
    thank you.

    Hi,
    My problem is that: I created a Serializable class in a project. And I added this project (first project) to another project (second project). First project is appearing in the second project' s Libraries folder. No problem. I want to create a jar file from second project. i.e. I want to Build second project (I use NetBeans IDE). I am using Build Main Project tab under Run. It is falling out. I am finding it second project' s jar file under its folder. I am clicking on it. But it is NOT WORKING. Do you know WHY. Could you help me please?

    Hi!
    Why can't I compile this snip of code?
    I get:
    Error: (19) method listFiles() not found in class java.io.File.

    Henning

    There is no method "listFiles()" in "File" class. (JDK 1.1.8)
    You can try to use " list() " method which
    Returns a list of the files in the directory specified by this File object.

  • How to use FilePermission class to change the file permission in Linux

    Hi all,
    I'm running in a issue related to changing the file permission under Linux environment. I'm using Suse 10.0 Linux and run jdk 1.5 java runtime.
    I want to create a file during execution time and change the permission of the same. I use File.createNewFile() API to create file. By default it does not have all the 3 permission (read,write,execute) for all the user ( user,owner,group). Through program I have to change the file permission ( equal to execute ,chmod 777 filename).I donot want to use runtime.exec() with chmod as the argument , since it creates a process to change the permission which may impact the performance. I want to try FilePermission class , by giving filename and permission as the argument. But it is not changing the permission . Could any one faced this problem ?
    If any body guides me, how to change the permission of the file under Linux using FilePermission class , it would be helpful.
    Thanks,

    How do I set the Umask prior to starting the program
    ? Could pls explain in steps.I don't think umask can help you. The mode mask prevents permission bits from being set when a file is created, but does not force any bits to be set. So if execute permission is not set explicitly when a file is created, umask will do nothing about it.
    But if you want more information about umask, see the man page for your shell script (sh, csh, etc.) or "man 2 umask".

    New Line Types need to be added to Kintana Workflows and these line types should be able to use the xmlimport/xmlexport scripts.
    We have customized Kintana to migrate forms personalizations using FNDLOAD.

  • Tomcat Web-server uses old .class files

    Hi Friends,
    My Tomcat webserver uses old .class files. The problem persists even if I delete old class files. The new ones are formed but then if i again recompile, the new-old ones are used :)
    Am I doing something wrong????
    Please suggest!!

    I have experienced this problem before as well. Tomcat seems to cache compiled class files for better speed. To get Tomcat to reload class files that I've recently recompiled here is what I do:
    1. Go into the Tomcat server administration area (http://localhost/admin)
    2. Choose the context that is using the classes that you want to reload (from Service / Host)
    3. Make sure reloadable is set to true
    3. Click save, and then commit changes
    Hope this helps, but if there is a better way to get Tomcat to use the most recent class files I would love to hear it!

  • File class using URI in a web server.

    How do I reference a file or directory on a web server using the File class?
    For example, if the URL is http://localhost:8080/foo and I want to access the images directory, how would I do it?
    This is what I've tried:
    URI uri = new URI("http",null,"foo",8080,"/foo/images",null,null);
    File file = new File(uri);
    I am getting an exception: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: URI scheme is not "file"
    uri.toString() looks good. File just doesn't seem to like a directory within a web server. I don't think I'm going to know the absolute path when I move to the actual web server.
