Using GZIPInputStream on Unix

I'm using GZIPInputStream in a Windows environment, but will soon move the code to a Unix machine. I'm assuming that there will be no problem here, but one function in the source code concerns me:
readUShort(), which has the comment "Reads unsigned integer in Intel byte order."
Before I break my head figuring out if there's a conflict between the Intel/non-Intel byte orders, does anyone know if this function will function exactly the same on the different platforms?
I'm particularly interested in this function because I mimic its functionality to detect the start of a GZIP stream by searching for the GZIP "magic" bytes. My only concern is that somehow the byte order will be switched and I won't be able to detect those bytes on a Unix machine.

does anyone know if this function will function exactly the same on the different platforms? Yes it will. The low-order byte is read first, then the high-order byte, then the result is formed.

  • Advantages of using Oracle with Unix over Windows server

    Hi there,
    I want some article/document which depicts the advantages of using Oracle with Unix (say HP-UX or Solaris backend). Actually the plan is to use some Data Warehousing applications using Cognos Poweplay, ReportNet and either Decision Stream of Cognos or Oracle Warehouse builder may be used as ETL tool. For Data mining applications we are planning to use SPSS Clementine. The Data volume will be substantial one. At present we are developing some prototype in Windows 2003 advanced environment. We are plaiing to use Risc server and RAID-5. Pl. advice some ideal architecture for us, as you know, it's typically a Govt. level application data (mostly archival data). The reports will be published using Report Net, Adhoc query etc, OLAP analysis will be done using Powerplay.

  • Using utl_file and unix pipes

    Hi,
    I'm trying to use utl_file and unix pipes to communicate with a unix process.
    Basically I want the unix process to read off one pipe and give me back the result on a different pipe.
    In the example below the unix process is a dummy one just copying the input to the output.
    I cant get this to work for a single plsql block writing and reading to/from the pipes - it hangs on the first read of the return pipe.
    Any ideas?

    > it hangs on the first read of the return pipe.
    Correct.
    A pipe is serialised I/O device. One process writes to the pipe. The write is blocked until a read (from another process or thread) is made on that pipe. Only when there is a reader for that data, the writer is unblocked and the actual write I/O occurs.
    The reverse is also true. A read on the pipe is blocked until another process/thread writes data into the pipe.
    Why? A pipe is a memory structure - not a file system file. If the write was not blocked the writer process can writes GBs of data into the pipe before a reader process starts to read that data. This will drastically knock memory consumption and performance.
    Thus the purpose of a pipe is to serve as a serialised blocking mechanism between a reader and a writer - allowing one to write data that is read by the other. With minimal memory overheads as the read must be serviced by a write and a write serviced by a read.
    If you're looking for something different, then you can open a standard file in share mode and write and read from it using two different file handles within the same process. However, the file will obviously have a file system footprint ito space (growing until the writer stops and the reader terminates and trashes the file) .
    OTOH a pipe's footprint is minimal.

  • Problem using icommand in UNIX

    Hi,
    I'm trying to use icommand in UNIX. I navigate to the middleware home on the server and in the .../BAM/Bin directory I can see an icommand.bat file and the standard icommand file. However, I can't see an icommand.sh file. I've tried some commands out but keep getting the 'file not found' error.
    Can someone please guide me on the instructions for using icommand in UNIX as I can't seem to find anything anywhere?

    Hi
    RWD uPerform records your actions in Microsoft Windows,web-based, and enterprise applications, and outputs a professionally formatted document and simulation. You can capture screens, buttons, edit fields, and more in the target application.
    The recording process captures information to simultaneously produce both a simulation view and a document view of procedural content.
    RWD uPerform captures actions in the following target applications:

  • How to generate a empty file in AL11 using ABAP and unix command

    Hi Experts,
    when load infopackage triggers it will search file from AL11 if file is available it will get loaded successfully.  When there is no file in AL11 error while opening file (orgin A) and the load will fail.  At this level i have to write a abap code using unix command to generate a empty file.
    Is there any way to achieve the above requirement.
    Thanks
    Vara

    Hi,
    If i get your requirement properly then you want to create a blank file if there is no file on the application server so that your infopackage does not fail, am i correct.
    If this is your requirement then this can be easily done if you use process chain to load the file via infopackage. Follow the following steps:
    1. Add a ABAP program before the infopackage and check if the file is present on the server or not. Use a simple ABAP statement OPEN DATASET <FNAME>. Check the SY-SUBRC after this statement if it is not 0 then it means that the file does not exist on the application server.
    2. Once you have established that the file is not present create a flat file using a code similar to the below one
    OPEN DATASET FILENAME FOR OUTPUT IN TEXT MODE
                          MESSAGE D_MSG_TEXT.
    IF SY-SUBRC NE 0.
      WRITE: 'File cannot be opened. Reason:', D_MSG_TEXT.
      EXIT.
    ENDIF.
    * Transferring Data
    LOOP AT INT_table.
      TRANSFER INT_table-field1 TO FILENAME.
    ENDLOOP.
    * Closing the File
    CLOSE DATASET FILENAME.
    3. Add your infopackage step after this ABAP program in your process chain.
    I hope this helps.

    the tcl script does the export stuff , we got the following error,

    I've had issues with paths in UNIX on several occassions, so I now just ensure that my shell scripts 'cd' to the owb/bin/unix directory first
    cd /oradir/dkfndr/owb/owb/bin/unix/
    ./OMBPlus.sh /finapps/dkfndr/owb/owb_export.tcl
    I have also had cases in UNIX where the install left me with at least on of the JDK directories with improperly set permissions.

    ok, not sure how much improvement this will give in general, but its given a reliable 25% speed increase on my mini tests
    using the nio libraries will also get you a lot further, and is the way to go if you are very keen on speed

    Hi Richard,
    I had the same issue using Eclipse. I just tried to run the
    ant script outside of Eclipse and it worked fine.
    This is an Eclipse-Ant Class Loader issue.
    In order to make it work in Eclipse, You have to :
    1. Open the External Tool Run Configuration.
    2. Select your Ant script.
    3. Select JRE Tab.
    4. In Runtime JRE section, choose Seperate JRE.
    Hope this helps !

  • Problem when uncompressing using GZIPInputStream

    i uploaded a 2.7MB gzipped byte array into MySQL database. The original file size before compressing was 9.3MB. When I retrieve the file from the database, everything works fine, but after uncompressing it using GZIP, it's only 9.2MB. I compared both the files, both look same in the beginning, but the last bytes are missing in the retrieved file. Here is my code.Can somebody give me some insight?
    byte[] bytes=getFile();
    ByteArrayInputStream bStream=new ByteArrayInputStream(bytes);
    GZIPInputStream iStream=new GZIPInputStream(bStream);
    File file = new File("/home/antn/file/testfile.cel");
    OutputStream oStream=new FileOutputStream(file);
    byte [] buf = new byte[512];
    int len = 0;
    while ( (len=iStream.read(buf))!= -1 )
    oStream.write(buf,0,len);
    iStream.close();
    oStream.close();
    bStream.close();
    Also I am getting this exception whenever I run the program.
    Exception in thread "main" java.io.EOFException: Unexpected end of ZLIB input stream
         at java.util.zip.InflaterInputStream.fill(InflaterInputStream.java:216)
         at java.util.zip.InflaterInputStream.read(InflaterInputStream.java:134)

         at java.io.FilterInputStream.read(FilterInputStream.java:90)
    at service.RetrieveFile.main(RetrieveFile.java:93)

    Hey guys,
    Thanks for your help. The problem was in writing to the database. Eventhough I closed all the input and output streams, I didn't flush the output stream and close it immediately. So now its working and thanks again for the great help.

  • FRM-40010 - Cannot read form when using Call_form on Unix 9iAS

    Hi,
    I'm using 9iAS on a unix server. However, the main form calls several other forms using CALL_FORM('formnam'); but it cannot read any of the forms. I've ensured that they have all been compiled on the server. They compiled successfully.
    I've also ensured that they are all residing in the FORMS60_PATH. Although it can find the main form OK, it cannot read any of the other forms. They are all located in the same directory.
    What can be causing this error?

    Make sure that formname is the name of the .fmx file and that you use the same case as it is in the file system, because UNIX is case-sensitive.
    How are you setting FORMS60_PATH? If you're using the Forms Listener Servlet and are setting the FORMS60_PATH in default.env, be sure that the variable name is spelled correctly. In the early versions of default.env that came out, there was a typo: FORSM60_PATH. So if people didn't notice this and just uncommented the line and set the path, they would get FRM-40010.
