Using imageio to convert .gif to .jpg gives bad image
Hi,
I'm looking at the 1.4 javax.imageio API, and wrote a naive
program to convert images from one format to another.
It will read .gif, .jpg or .png and correctly write .gif and .png
images, but when I try to write a .jpg from a .gif or .png
the result is very black-looking - actually most of the colour
is there but changed to a very dark level and red switched to blue
for example. Presumably there is a reason that this doesn't work,
or is it a bug? I would've though an exception would be thrown
if the image types selected were incompatible.
Also, how does one specify the JPEG quality setting?
Thanks for any clues,
Ed
import javax.imageio.*;

try
File f1 = new File(argv[0]);
BufferedImage bi = ImageIO.read(f1);
System.out.println("Read "+f1+" OK.");
System.out.println("Image="+bi);
File f2 = new File(argv[1]);
String extn = f2.getName();
extn = extn.substring(extn.lastIndexOf('.')+1);
ImageIO.write(bi, extn, f2);
System.out.println("Wrote "+f2+" OK format="+extn);
catch (Exception ex)
ex.printStackTrace();
Interesting, the program works correctly on Windows 2000
and Solaris Sparc; The .jpg file creating problem only
occurs on my Solaris x86 machine.

Converting GIF images to JPG - display problems in browser
I am currently writing a program that uses the ImageIO package (javax.imageio.*) to take GIF and PNG images and convert them to JPG images. The program seems to convert them correctly, especially for the PNG images, but the converted GIF images don't open in a browser. They open just fine in Windows Picture and Fax viewer, but when I try to open them in IE or Firefox, it only diplays the little red 'x'.
Is anyone familiar enough with Images and the ImageIO package in Java that they may have some insight on why these converted GIF files won't display in a browser.Bonjour,
In my [website|http://iweb.debutersurmac.com>, all the images are JPG files,
By default iWeb '09 converts images to JPG (yes, it's true)...
...unless you use masked images*
!http://i32.servimg.com/u/f32/09/02/44/99/masked10.jpg!
Crop your images (with Preview) before you paste them in iWeb. Don't use mask, Unmask an image if it's masked. That's the trick!
!http://i32.servimg.com/u/f32/09/02/44/99/unmask10.jpg!
(* images with transparency areas (ex : some PNG and GIF), rotation and shapes in iWeb make also PNG files in your website.) -
ImageIO.write converting to gif
It seems that I can't ImageIO to convert a BufferedImage to the GIF format. Other formats work. According to the program's output (see below), ImageIO should be able to handle GIF. Yet the returned byte array is zero length. What is the problem?
import java.awt.*;
import java.awt.image.*;
import javax.imageio.*;
import java.io.*;
public class JPGTest {
public static void main(String[] args) {
try {
Rectangle screenRectangle = new Rectangle(Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getScreenSize());
Robot robo = new Robot();
// take a screenshot
BufferedImage bufferedImage = robo.createScreenCapture(screenRectangle);
ByteArrayOutputStream baos = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
// this line seems to fail
ImageIO.write(bufferedImage, "gif", baos);
System.out.println("check whether the \"gif\" format is supported");
String formatNames[] = ImageIO.getReaderFormatNames();
for (int i = 0; i < formatNames.length; i ++)
System.out.println(formatNames);
// returns a zero byte array when "gif" is passed into ImageIO.write above
// yet works when "jpg" is passed in
byte imageBytes[] = baos.toByteArray();
System.out.println("Image bytes length: " + imageBytes.length);
} catch (Exception e) {
System.out.println(e.getMessage());
And here is the output:
1: the supported images, followed by
2: the obvious conversion-to-gif failure:
check whether the "gif" format is supported

Image bytes length: 0It used to be that some corporation had a patent (or something like that) on the GIF format, so you had to buy a licence from them to be able to produce GIFs. I suspect that is why Sun did not distribute software that could produce GIFs. That's my guess, anyway. Here's a link to a small bit of information about that:

Set frame delay time for animated gif using ImageIO
I'm trying to change the delay time of each frame for an animated gif by changing the metadata for each frame as following but it doesn't change anything.

Node root = metadata.getAsTree("javax_imageio_gif_image_1.0");
for (Node c = root.getFirstChild(); c != null; c = c.getNextSibling())
String name = c.getNodeName();
if (c instanceof IIOMetadataNode)
IIOMetadataNode metaNode = (IIOMetadataNode) c;
if ("GraphicControlExtension".equals(name))
metaNode.setAttribute("delayTime", Integer.toString(delayMS));

i am on windows 8 platform, i used adobe elements to work on my image - the output is in dng format, how do i convert this to jpg format?
When you make a DNG that's like making another raw file, so you will need to convert the DNG file just like your original raw. Don't use the Save button in the raw converter. That's just a link to the DNG converter. Normally you would click Open instead and then save in the editor as a jpg or other image format of your choice.

I recently started using an iPad. I up loaded several apps. Evernote, cloudon, Goodreader, Drop Box and lots of others.
It crashes when I down load pictures and then try to use them. Converting a jpg to a pdf usually triggers a crash.
Is there a "hitch" in my "giddy up?"
Help.

In addition to OT's test, you might also check, if using a different "Theme" for printing will avoid the crash:

If you are editing a single psd file in the editor, simply choose 'save as' and specify the jpg format in the save dialog.
If you want to batch convert many psd to jpg in the editor, use the 'File/process multiple files' command.
If you are in the organizer, use the export function and select the jpg format in the export dialog. -

WHY - give workable examples of using JHeadstart to convert forms into ADF.
Why give examples of how to use JHeadStart to convert forms in to ADF, but not allow it to be done with the evaluation version ... I assume it was possible with the 10g versions. Is it broken in 11g.
I was lookig to build a case for migrating an oracle forms application to Oracle Java and not a IBM or JBOSS or even .Net application, I can't build that case now, I have no budget to engage Oracle, have to do this of my own bat. Company has been take over by bigger company that has IBM stack.
Is Oracle this follish to allow the smaller users of Oralce to go by the way side, be lost to other languages etcWe deliberately did not include the Forms2ADFGenerator in the evaluation version.
Modernizing your forms application, possibly migrating it to ADF is a considerable effort that is often underestimated.
Migration tools like the Forms2ADFGenerator can help to a certain extent but are by no means a magic bullet. This is something we cannot stress enough, as over and over again we see people who think migration tools can make the difference. They cannot.
If you want to make a choice of development environment to modernize your forms application, then the availability of a migration tool should not play a role!
It is a fundamental and strategic decision to go for Oracle ADF which should not be influenced by a minor time saver like a migration tool.
To decide on the use of JHeadstart, the evaluation version with the tutorial should be convincing enough.
The real power of Jheadstart is not in the Forms2ADF Generator, this tool is just a lbonus that can save you a bit of time.
Here is some more info:
When does JHeadstart Forms2ADF Generator save time
The amount of work that can be saved by using the JHeadstart Forms2ADF Generator (JFG) very much depends on the structure of the Oracle Forms application at hand. The JHeadstart Forms2ADF Generator provides most savings for forms that have the following characteristics:
* Standard-Forms data retrieval and data manipulation through blocks based on database tables, with master-detail relations defined between the block
* Complex user interface, many (stacked) canvasses, many tabs, many list of values, and other display types
* PL/SQL logic mostly limited to user interface dynamics: conditionally showing/hiding user interface items, and conditionally changing the properties of user interface items. While JHeadstart does not convert PL/SQL logic, this type of logic is easily implemented in the ADF application because JHeadstart provides many declarative property settings to implement this behavior.
PL.SQL Logic
JHeadstart has made the deliberate choice to not automatically convert the PL/SQL logic to Java. The reasons for this are:
* It is impossible to automate the migration of a two-tier architecture (logic in Forms or in the database) to a three tier Model-View-Controller architecture as is common in JEE web applications, including ADF-based applications.
* The architecture of the converted application should be identical to the best-practice architecture of an ADF application that is build from scratch. If the architecture is the same, the same skill set can be used to maintain both migrated applications and ADF applications build from scratch. In addition, by going for a best practice architecture, the application is more flexible, and can be maintained easier at lower cost.
* When using the JHeadstart Forms2ADF Generator, you get this best-practice ADF architecture that is identical to ADF/JHeadstart applications that are built from scratch.
Other Forms2ADF Considerations
And even if it turns out the JFG adds a lot of value, there are many other questions you should ask yourself before embarking on a Foms2ADF project.
For example:
* Apart from technical reasons like old Forms verisons no longer supported, are there real business reasons and business benefits for migrating that justify the migration effort?
* To what extent is the application still meeting functional requirements?
* Are there issues with stability and end user friendliness?
* Old forms applications are typical "window-on-data" screens, you see the structure of the datamodel through the layout of the screens. Modern web 2.0 composite applications are more task-oriented with good support for human workflow. You should consider to what extent it wants to leverage all these new user interfaces capabilities that come with ADF Faces and WebCenter.
* How does the application fits in the overall IT landscape? What interfaces to other systems exist, what (old/obsolete?) technology is used to implement those interfaces?
* What about batch functionality and reporting facilities?
* May be part of the functionality of the current system can be replaced with standard off-the-shelf software?
* How sound, well structured and future proof is the underlying datamodel?
* To what extent are you looking at service-orientated architectures? Whats the SOA maturity level of your organisation?
* Above questions help to answer the key question: how desirable and benficial is it to migrate an old monolitic forms application 1:1 to a monolitic ADF aplication? How does that fit in overall IT strategy?
* Organisational isues: who will migrate the system, who will maintain the system? Is outsourcing considered? etc.
Next Steps
We offer a Forms2ADF assessment service in which we migrate a number of sample forms selected by the customer to assess the added value of the JFG, and we discuss all of the above questions
For example, I did one Forms2ADF assessment where it turned out that JFG added litlle or no value, but we were still able to convince the customer of the combined power of ADF and JHeadstart in (re-)building ADF apps from scratch.
You also might want to take a look at some presentations I did on this topic, and some online demo's:

* 3 online demo's of forms2adf conversion process: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/jheadstart/overview/index.html

Hi,
I have to convert a gif image to a jpg image but when I convert, the image size increases from 22 kbytes to 50 kbytes. is there a way I could convert the image without increasing the size in java?
can somebody help me with this. I would be very glad if somebody could help me with this.
I am using Jmagick for this.
MagickImage.setFormat("jpg");
I don't need it to be done using Jmagick, but if there is a way I would definitely like to know.
Thanks,
Samanth.The size of the JPG depends on the content of the image itself; in most cases, the JPG is smaller than the GIF, even with high quality images. The size of the JPG can be controlled by how much information you are willing to lose; this is controlled by a parameter called Quality.
ImageMagick (and therefore JMagick, since this is only the Java interface to ImageMagick) has a parameter for setting the quality; in command-line tools, it is the parameter -quality; in programming, I think it is MagickSetCompressionQuality(); check the documentation. Quality ranges from 0 (lowest, barely recognizable) to 100 (highest)
Without JMagick, you can use the built-in ImageIO
//Read the file to a BufferedImage
BufferedImage image = ImageIO.read(new File("c:/temp/image.gif"));
Once you have the BufferedImage, you can write the image as a JPG. You will need to create a File object for the destination image. When calling the write() method, specify the type string as "jpg" (other formats are supported).
ImageIO.write(image, "jpg", new File("c:/temp/image.jpg")); -
who can give me the website about gif and jpg format?
thanks guy.This is a crosspost.
Chances are that you won't get a resonable response when you do that. Try reading How to Ask Questions the Smart Way. That will give you plenty of pointers on getting reasonable responses.
The response in your other post is a literal answer to you question, google is your friend.
For a direct answer, here's the the Jpeg FAQ. If what you are actualling requesting is "how do I use images in Java" take a look at the ImageIcon class, the javax.imageio package and search this forum for examples. You could also check the How to use Icons in the Java Tutorial. -
Creating a .gif or .jpg File
I have written an eBook and am sending it for eBook publication and sale.
One of the items required in the process before uploading the eBook is to provide:
A. An image of the book cover. That image is now in Pages format and it contains text and a line art image. I need to convert that cover page to a .gif or .jpg format. How can I do this?
B. The process also requires me to create 'Banners' of varying size. How do I create a Banner? All the material [text and art] are contained in the existing Pages document.
Thank you,
Leo

As far as I know, the only way to get a gif or jpg would be to make a screenshot.
Maybe a PDF may fit your needs. If it does use the Print to PDF tool and print the 1st page.

You may open a blank Numbers document and remove every table.
You will get a huge blank surface which may be more than one meter in width.
Copy objects from Pages and paste then on the Numbers sheet.

Saving a .gif or .jpg image
hello,
in the code sample below you can see how I try to make a "thumbnail"-like image of a gif, jpg.
Afterwards they are showed in a JTable.
But this takes quite a lot of time to show the, because they all needs to be resized on the fly each time.
Can I opent he picture, resize it, save it as another one, and use this new file to show as a thumbnail?
code:
//setIcon
//Zet de foto in de picPanel
public void setIcon(File file){
try{
FileReader test = new FileReader(file);
image = file;
test.close();
ImageIcon icon = new ImageIcon (image.getPath());
if (icon.getIconWidth() > icon.getIconHeight())
icon.setImage(icon.getImage().getScaledInstance(150,-1,Image.SCALE_FAST));
else
icon.setImage(icon.getImage().getScaledInstance(-1,150,Image.SCALE_FAST));
foto.setIcon(icon);
catch(Exception e){
Image = new File("img/wrong.gif");
ImageIcon icon = new ImageIcon (image.getPath());
if (icon.getIconWidth() > icon.getIconHeight())
icon.setImage(icon.getImage().getScaledInstance(150,-1,Image.SCALE_FAST));
else
icon.setImage(icon.getImage().getScaledInstance(-1,150,Image.SCALE_FAST));
foto.setIcon(icon);
changed();
}found an method saveComponentAsImage in one of the topics, and changed it a bit, so ti would be usefull in my current project.
//saveIconAsImage
//slaat de gegeven icon op met gegeven max lengte/breedte
public static void saveIconAsImage(ImageIcon icon, String name,int width) {
if (icon.getIconWidth() > icon.getIconHeight())
icon.setImage(icon.getImage().getScaledInstance(width,-1,Image.SCALE_REPLICATE));
else
icon.setImage(icon.getImage().getScaledInstance(-1,width,Image.SCALE_REPLICATE));
JLabel c = new JLabel(icon);
int w = c.getPreferredSize().width;
int h = c.getPreferredSize().height;
// use TYPE_INT_ARGB if you want alpha (transparency)
BufferedImage image = new BufferedImage(w, h, BufferedImage.TYPE_INT_RGB);
// don't do this if you want ugly graphics ;)
HashMap hints = new HashMap();
hints.put(RenderingHints.KEY_TEXT_ANTIALIASING,RenderingHints.VALUE_TEXT_ANTIALIAS_ON);
hints.put(RenderingHints.KEY_ANTIALIASING,RenderingHints.VALUE_ANTIALIAS_ON);
Graphics g = image.getGraphics();
((Graphics2D)g).addRenderingHints(hints);
// make the component believe its visible and do its layout
c.addNotify();
c.setSize(w,h);
c.setVisible(true);
c.validate();
// draw the graphics
c.print(g);
// write it out
try {
ImageIO.write(image, "jpg", new File("pic/"+name+"_"+width+".jpg"));
} catch (IOException ioe) {
System.out.println(ioe.getMessage());
// cleanup

System.out.println("Done!");By the way, the reason I converted to TYPE_INT_RGB was that your GIFs (at least the first one) had an
IndexColorModel with a transparent color (transparency BITMASK) -- this means you color model
has four channels: red, green, blue and alpha (even if you happen not to have transparent pixels in the
image). While jpeg images are allowed to have 4 channels, most other applications mishandle them
when they do -- perhaps the source of the tinting.
It just occurred to me that perhaps a more effficient way to get rid of the alpha channel is to create an
OPAQUE IndexColorModel out of the given one and reuse the raster:
