Using iMovie 08 for Stop Motion?

My son and I have been using iMovie to do stopmotion animation. But with iLife 08, it seems the ability to import stills at 10-15fps and without the Ken Burns effect has been taken away. I can't get still photos to come in at anything besides 4sec/frame, and they have to be changed one by one - I can't batch change them. And, I can't figure out how to get rid of the Ken Burns effect.
I'm probably just going to by iStopMotion anyway, but does anyone have tips on how to import a whole batch of iPhoto stills at ".3 fps" (*** happened to references to the 30fps btw)? AND turn off the Ken Burns effect?
Thanks,

The menu command File > Project Properties lets us control both the default playtime of imported images (both new images and all current project images) and the Ken Burns effect. And, of course, after importing an image you can adjust both properties by selecting the image and clicking the little Crop icon in the upper left corner.
These functions can also be accessed by Control-clicking on a slideshow image thumbnail.
iMovie 7 doesn't let us set a playtime shorter than .1 seconds (about 3 frames). For shorter durations it may be necessary to use QuickTime Pro to import the images as a sequence into a QuickTime movie. That lets you import using any duration you want. Then you would import THAT movie to iMovie. It would arrive in iMovie as video, however, not individual images.

  • Using iMovie for stop motion animation, Motion speed me up?

    Basically my process
    Use image background
    take pictures of me posing
delete out all the space around me using pixlr.com
move those over to miniturize me and animate me ontop of the background
    add effects
    put into imovie
Now this works fine and dandy, but I've been disheartened by many times working for 4+ hours and then seein the final product and it *****.
So questions.  I used to use After Effects but a friend just recommended me Motion.
Does Motion 5 allow me to delete all the  stuff around me posing against my wall?
Does M5 really have all the problems the people on the boards are complaining about?
Can I add some decent photo effects like I do with http://pixlr.com/o-matic/
    Thanks guys

your workflow is - sorry to say that - a bit ... inconvenient
the usual workflow is: record using some plain green or blue background, create matte/key new background in, color-process video.
'matting by hand' skips 50 years of video-processing ...
you can accomplish that with iMovie, Motion or FCPX. iM and FCPX come with a bundle of 'presets' which allow similar coloring/contrasting/de-saturation as pixlr. FCPX for sure allows much more, in detail manual manipulations of color, although the 'video' tab in iMovie11 offers enough 'knobs' to create the few looks pixlr offers. Motion wouldn't be my first choice, as the app's name implies, it is basicly not meant for such simple color-corrections.

I Want too do stop motion capture but when I click get media, the pop up dialog box proceeda as if to import still photos. How do I get the "capture panel" that is talked about where I can select stop motion?  Is premiere elements 9 supposed to work with a still camera like mine for stop motion at all?   Thanks!!'  Kimberley

Thanks for the reply. This is my take on the situation that you describe.
    You wrote
The camera was linked to PC with USB cable and then the software showed on the PC what would normally be in the camera viewfinder.  The enter key on the PC worked as a shutter release and onion skinning worked.  Can premiere elements do this?
That more or less describes the Premiere Elements Webcam experience if Premiere Elements recognized the Webcam.
If you have made a USB connection between the Canon 40D and the computer and you are not getting a Capture Window when you use Premiere Elements' Add Media Webcam or WDM compatible device, then Premiere Elements does not support that simple route. It is my understanding that WDM compatible device represents Windows Driver Model (a framework for device drivers).
I have done some Google searching, and I have found instance where claims have been made for the Canon 40D as a webcam. I post one of these links for informational and non promotional purposes.

Have you explore any utilities that came with the Canon that might supply drivers for the Canon as a webcam?
Have you tried to use the Canon 40D as a webcam with Windows Movie Maker?
Please review and consider. (Also, 9.0.1 Update can be downloaded and installed from the project's Help Menu/Update or obtained online from

We will be watching for further developments.

  • Best webcam for stop motion in Premiere Elements 7

The Gear Head usb webcam my son has been using for stop motion does not seem to work with Premiere Elements 7.
Adobe used to have a list of compatible cameras, but the link is dead.
Anyone have any suggestions for a usb webcam you know works with PRE 7?
Also noticed that it "requires" a usb 2.0 connection with 1.0 drivers. Anything issues to look out for there?

Here's another ask of you Paul.
I've also seen a tutorial on a guy adding a glow to a wedding shot that he had.  It was a shot of some of the grooms party in a church I think and also a shot of the grooms party outside the church.  The tutorial showed how to bring up the whites on certain areas of the images to glow out the whites and have them shine through ... if you know what I mean.
I forgot to bookmark the tutorial so just wondered if you knew (again) where it may have been from.  A big ask I know but I thought I'd try just in case.

  • Any chance of success using iMovie for Film Festival Submission?

Say with iMovie, say 11, 09, or my old HD?
Or do I need Final Cut, say Express?
Will I be able to submit a sufficiently high def version using iMovie 11? Or will the degradation be too much, supposing that I edit in iMovie, then burn to DVD with iDVD.
The film will be about 7 minutes and shot with Panasonic GH1 and a Go Pro in HD. There may be slow motion and a mix of ambient sound, voice, and music.
It'll be entirely shot outdoors under somewhat nasty conditions. Meaning no lights, usually no tripod.
The reason I mention these latter points is that perhaps the quality of what I bring back (shaky, low light) might be the limiting factor and not the image degradation.
I have made many iMovies for YouTube, but would like to go bigger, so to speak, in quality of video, not necessarily length.
Would I benefit from going to Final Cut Express? Or could I stick with iMovie?
Anybody out there ever use iMovie for something like Banff Mtn Film Festival?

    Yes, Banff Mtn Film Festival:
Here's what they ask (don't actually understand all the requirements, yet)
    TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
For purposes of pre-selection, judging and festival screening, all
entries should meet the following criteria:
    a) Entries MUST be accompanied by one polyboxed DVD-R NTSC
(Region 1 coded), which will be used for adjudication purposes.
    b) Entries must also include a tape copy of the master. In order of
    preference, videotape formats must be:
    HD-D5 HDTV
    DVC Pro
    HDCam HDTV
    HDV
    Digital Betacam (525)
    DVCam (525)
    Betacam SP NTSC
    MiniDV NTSC
Digital Betacam 625 and Betacam SP PAL/SECAM will
not be accepted. Due to reproduction issues, MiniDV
    format is LEAST preferred.
    c) Film entries must be 35mm or 16mm with OPTICAL or
    MAGNETIC sound (no double band).
    d) Production attributes should conform to typical broadcast
    standards and include:

and black with either 0 dbvu (analogue) or –20dbFS (digital)
    audio tone reference signals.
    • Please remove commercial blacks and include a production
slate prior to the program start.

  • I've been using iMovie for a while now to make movies out of mostly travel photos and video clips.  I try to vary the time for the photos from 1-4 sec.  Any ideas out there?

I've been using iMovie for a while now to make movies out of mostly travel photos and video clips.  I try to vary the time for the photos from 1-4 sec., although most of them are 1-2 seconds so as to keep it short.  A friend of mine who saw my most recent product said that this is too short.  Any ideas out there?

I apologize for my confusion on your question.  I find that depending on the principal of each photo and my target audience to determine the time frame for each photo.  It seems most people get impatient with viewing one photo for more than 1-2 seconds if the photo is not complex.
If there are several things that interests the viewers in any one image, they want to look at it a second or two longer.  If the movie of images is a training aid, the images may need to be more than 3 seconds.  For intro's, or a trailer for a training movie, no longer than 1-2 seconds.
That was a long answer to say, generally speaking, I find 3 seconds to be an average time length.

And are there any possibility to change the speed of playing the video (slomo, faster, etc)?
    Thanx in advance for help.

Yes it is. It's 3 seconds and in the .m4r format. I used it since I first bought my phone.
One thing I've noticed, not that this has anything to do with it but... I named my phone xxx since I've had it, now when I hook it up to iTunes it shows up as xxx (2). Any idea what this is about?

  • When using imovie for Ipad, how can I fast forward a project to cut the length down?

When using imovie for Ipad, how can I fast forward a project to cut the length down to fit under the 15 minutes required for Youtube? My current project is 23 minutes, and need to cut it down below 15 minutes. I was hoping to speed up the video. The content would actually be better viewed in at a faster speed anyhow.

    Jon,
It sounds like you did, just as you should, Save_As and Delete everything that is unwanted. If you did the Deletion from the Timeline, there should be nothing from the old Project, that should be included. A DVD is Transcoded and burned from the Timeline. If the Assets are not there, they will not included in the DVD, even if you did not Delete anything from the Project Panel.
Tell us about the Clips now on your Timeline. Also, can you check the Timeline, by hitting the \ (Backslash key), and looking near the end of the Timeline. Do you have any "orphans" out there? Check all Video Tracks, even if you have to scroll to see them all. Does the Duration of the Timeline (viewed in the Program Monitor) match what you think that it should? If not, then you most likely have orphans, that you missed Deleteing.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Using iMovie for a presentation?

I'm hoping to use iMovie 09 in dual screen mode for a presentation. The idea is that all my photos and video clips are lined up in the timeline on the 1 screen, which I select when I need them to play on the presentation screen. Unfortunately, as far as I can see, when I move my mouse over the Event or Project windows, it shows/previews that clip on the main screen. This problem isn't specific to the dual screen mode, it also does it when you're working with 1 screen. Is there a way to disable this feature so that I can use iMovie for my presentation?

.. .the thing with creating a folder and placing all my media in there, could you go into that in a bit more depth please? If that's an easy way of displaying the media on a second screen, I guess that would be the thing for me to do!
hmm, well, easy yes, but less convenient than usage of a designated presentation app. Keynote has some nice features .. but, I'm no Apple salesman.. here's the 'Russian techniqué' :
first, we have to collect the stills..
in Finder create a New Folder 'Presentation Stills' (or.. whatever), perhaps on Desktop.. (or anywhere, you like..)
if stills are NOT in iPhoto, COPY them (hold ctrl-key and drag 'n drop) from actual location into 'Pres_stills'
if stills are in iP, collect them in an album, Export >> into your Pres_Stills folder.
    2nd) same with movies..
    create Folder 'Pres_movs' ..
any existing movies get copied as stills
any iMovie Projects have to individually 'Export using QT' ..
3rd) connect 2nd monitor, goto System Prefs, choose etx. monitor as 'main screen' (=drag menu bar to that device)
    3.5th) Test!
.. perhaps, you have to adjust sizes etc ...
    4th) Showtime!
open both folders, drag to your Macbook's screen.
double click a still => Preview will open on main screen, showing still...
double click a mov => QTplayer will play on main screen.

  • Using iMovie for video coaching

I'm trying to see if I can use iMovie for a coaching application or if there are any other suggestions.
A while back I had online coaching sessions for rowing.  I'm trying to find the software my coach used or something equivalent, but he is not currently available.
I sent him an mp4 video of my rowing.  He responded with a video that had my video on the screen, reduced in size, along with a portion of the screen of my coach critiquing my technique.  In his video he was able to play my video, pause, go back and forward, while giving a narrative and using the mouse pointer.
Can iMovie do this or any other suggestions?
    Thanks.

You could create such a video in iMovie.
But you can not made it like that … (hu?!)
    a) You would need screen-grabs of the rowing, to record the pointer … ok, that's possible with QuicktimePlayerX.app, or much better with ScreenFlow …
    b) while doing so, you'd need a cam recording trainer+voice
    c) finally, you'd need to synch all that, apply 'effects' (=picture-in-picture) and edit that stuff.
.... as said, possible, but really challanging your iM-skills.
The menitoned ScreenFlow is better in that. Would be my choice!
There was a less known tool called 'Podcast Producer', which was part of a MacOS-Server-edition… not avail anymore.
Finally, maybe BoinxTV is an option …

  • Imovie frame speed adjustment for stop motion

Now I'm on imovie 10.0.6, I can't seem to get the software to let me adjust my frame speed.
I'm working with stills, that I want to edit into a stop motion piece for some of the film, and show other images as stills for other sections.
The speed editor is greyed out, as is the FF option. Also, the duration is showing in seconds, where as in old imovie i would go into the preferences to show frames per second.
Any one overcome this issue and can help how I get the functionality I need?

  • Is premier pro used for stop motion if so how ?

    hi
    There
    guys
as part of a project i have been tasked with producing a stop motion
in Regards to editing such a project is it possible to edit within primer pro
and slow the frame rate down ???

If you already have a video you want to work from, you can also make a stop-motion from that without too much trouble.
    1. Put your video into a sequence
    2. Place a marker at each frame you want in the stop-motion
    3. In the program monitor export a frame at each marker, be sure to check the import into project box
    4. Select all the exported frames, right-click and set the duration you want for each
    5. Create stop-motion sequence from the selected frames

  • Import from iphoto for stop-motion?

Hi, I'm trying to import photos from an iPhoto album for a stop-motion project, but the durations don't get set.
I select all the photos from the album (Media -> Photos). In the Photo Settings I've turned off the Ken Burns effect. In the duration box (next to the turtle) I type "0:03". When I click Apply, the photos are imported, but the duration for every photo is set to "9:29". If I go in manually to every photo I can reset the durations, but as you can imagine, with stop-motion there are a lot of photos!
Can anyone help? I'm using iMovie HD 6. I've tried a normal DV and MPEG-4 project with the same results.
    TIA...

    Hi,
I just tested your method. You should be ok with it. But, I did a couple of things differently.
    1. Selected the first photo in the Photos pane. Instead of typing in the 0:03 for the duration, I moved the slider all the way to the left, giving the 0:03 setting. Didn't hit 'Apply.'
    2. Then, I clicked on a group of photos to import. Didn't select a lot of them; did 44 at at time. Dragged them to the timeline where I wanted them.
    Worked fine.
I tried it clicking on 'Apply' but that put the photos at the end of my timeline. Maybe that is ok for you as you are importing your photos, but it is not good if you want the imported photos somewhere else, such as in the middle of your movie.

  • Low quality export for stop motion animation stills from Canon 5D Mark ii

Thank you very much beforehand to anyone who is willing to look through this issue, it's been a long and frustrating process so far...
I am attempting to put together a stop motion animation in Final Cut Express but my exports are always either low quality, or medium quality and stretched. I am shooting on a Canon 5D Mark ii set to take pictures at 21M 5616x3744 [999] (though I'm not entirely sure what the 21M or 999 mean).
When I first assembled my stills (unedited or altered in any way) and exported, it looked like this:
A relatively drastic loss in colour and quality. This was achieved exporting through quicktime conversion using the following settings:
    Compression Type: H.264
    Compressor Quality: Best
    Size: 1920x1080 HD
    Preserve aspect ratio using: Crop
    Deinterlace source video: unchecked
Unhappy with the result, I went through hours of testing and researching which only yielded a result after I discovered the control-Q Easy Setup menu. I tried setting up as an apple intermediate codec using HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60 at 29.97 fps. I kept the export settings the same as above, but knowing that I was now working with a canvas that keeps to the 16:9 proportions, I tried cropping one of my stills in photoshop to fit that 16:9 ratio.
I then imported my 16:9 cropped still and an unedited JPEG version from my camera and exported the resulting 10 second video. The result was better quality, but still noticeably degraded from the original stills. More importantly, both the cropped 16:9 and the unedited JPEG were stretched out of proportion as seen below (16:9 version):
Of course I forgot to note the original settings on Easy Setup so I can't figure out how to get back to the original lower quality, yet undistorted image (not that I want to do that). I tried numerous different sizes for the export including changing the Crop (when necessary) setting to letterbox. Nothing worked.
The canvas, however, immediately looked 100% better after switching the Easy Setup to HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60 at 29.97 fps. It held the improved quality without distorting the image:
I'm not sure if there's any hope of having a great image quality, but at very least I would like to be able to export at the decent quality of the second screenshot without the stretching and cropping.
I need to have this resolved ASAP for work, I've already wasted too much time here. Any help is so appreciated, I'll be active in providing whatever additional information that I can to responders, though please keep in mind that I'm relatively new to all this, I don't know where to find everything

I've decided just to try to get back to the export that I showed in the first screenshot. That result came before I started tampering with the Easy Setup. Like I said, when I changed the setup the canvas quality improved drastically and the dimensions seemed to fit much better, but the export was vertically stretched and cropped. I just reset my FCE settings and it turns out the default setup is DV-NTSC, but it's giving me a terrible quality still...
I just want to get back to that second screenshot's quality.. Could someone suggest what I should switch the easy setup to for importing stills from my Canon 5D Mark ii to yield the right results?
