Using iMovie scrambles my display

Hey guys
Using iMovie 10 for more than 10 mins leads to it scrambling my screen/display. I have to reboot to get it back to normal, does anyone have a fix for this or know why it's happening?
Mac: 24" iMac Mid 2007 (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo model)
iMovie is latest version (10.0.05 I think)
Mac OS X 10.9.5

Hi,
I have same issue...no maps just basic colour backgrounds.
I'm on iMovie 10.0.6 and Yosemite 10.0.2
I'm wondering if you ever got this issue solved??
Thanks for any help.

  • "The operation could not be completed" using iMovie 10.0.6

I'm using the new iMovie 10.0.6 with OS X Yosemite 10.10.
This is the first time I access to iMovie after upgrade to Yosemite.
When I try to begin a new movie and after select a theme the following message is shown:
"The operation could not be completed.
No other information is available about the problem"
The technical information obtained from the console is:
"13/11/14 11:46:50,195 iMovie[702]: -[NSAlert alertWithError:] called with nil NSError. A generic error message will be displayed, but the user deserves better."
So, I can't use iMovie as I expected...
Is anybody have this problem ?
    Thanks

I had the exact same problem, working with apple support I had to uninstall iMovie and all the files connected with it and then download iMovie again.  The problem is you iMovie is not creating the library file it needs to save your work.
Apple support was great at walking me through which files had to be deleted.
    good luck

  • IPad 2 - iMovie - will not display any videos or pics from my camera roll.

iMovie won't display any vids or pics from my camera roll. All the vids are taken using the iPad. Help?

    Probably a privacy issue.
    Check your privacy settings.
    On the iPad, click SETTINGS
    then PRIVACY
    then PHOTOS
Look for iMovie and turn it ON

  • IMovie won't display edited images

    Here's the story:
    1. copy a photo in Camera Roll
    2. crop the photo
    3. save it
    4. in iMovie the thumbnail displays the cropped image
    5. insert into video and the UNcropped image is displayed
Easy to duplicate on various iPads using ios7 and upgraded iMovie.
    Your help is appreciated.
    Thanks.

Neither of these "fixes" has changed anything. I also cleared my cache, ran a diagnostic check, and a virus/trojan scan! Either way, firefox 4 is just not working up to my needs! Should, or can I go back to 3.6?

  • Using Two Minotors with Display Spanning Monitors

I'm interested exploring the option of using two monitors to display apps such as: Aperture, CS2 Photoshop (used as the external editor to Aperture), FinalCut Express and iMovie. My G5's video card will handle two monitors so that shouldn't be a problem. But was wondering how the spanning of the video display between two monitors works for these apps and if this is an efficient workflow?
I have an Apple 20" Cinema Display and wish I had purchased a bigger monitor. However a Windows friend insists two monitors that span the application display accross both monitors is more efficient than a larger monitor. Two 20" monitors certainly would have more screen "real estate" than a single 23" monitor but I don't know how well a dual monitor set up would actually work!
    Interested in your experience here!
    Thanks!

    Hello Sven
The only issue with dual monitors is not having them once you've had them!!! It is very addictive and very very productive..
Having used monitors of odd sizes and now have two the same size, I would strongly suggest having two the same size!!
    Steps in the use of
    1. Level the two tops of the monitors slightly above eye height
    2. Put the monitors in a very slight arc
    3. Now sit slightly in front of one (just off centre), this is your main monitor. Your work window with the menu at the top.
    4. Now move all the junk to the second window, toolbars, palettes email RSS newsgroups and so on..
You now can glance at the second monitor WITHOUT moving your head and this is where time is saved. As you get used to the same items being in the same place I can seem to change things from my peripheral vision.. Now your flying !!
So to run two applications dependently eg a picture in photoshop from Aperture. Aperture in the main window and Photoshop in the other with all the junk!!
I have also sat for long periods at a friends 32" and get terrible neck ache, your always sat/looking in wrong the place
Good luck, any more questions fire away..

  • Image quality using iMovie 08 vs Final Cut Pro

I read in November's Macworld that if I use a tapeless camcorder, "you won't get the best image quality if you use iMovie '08 because the software converts each movie clip to smaller, more manageable size. To get the highest quality you'll need to be running Final Cut Pro on a Mac Pro with at least 2GB of RAM." Do you all agree with this? And if so, please consider the following. I used a mini DV camcorder to transfer all my tapes to my computer and to an external hard drive. Have I already lost that image quality in doing so using iMovie? If so, can Final Cut Pro import from iMovie and improve that quality by decompressing or will I need to retransfer the tapes using Final Cut Pro or will the difference be too negligible to be noticed and not to bother. Thanks, SWestD

It depends on the format. In general, the consumer tapeless cameras shoot some highly compressed variant of the mpeg2 or mpeg4 format (delivery formats). These formats are not designed to be edited but rather to be displayed directly from the camera to the TV. In order to edit the material, you must first convert the files from their delivery format to something editiable. This conversion usually results in LARGER not smaller files. There is the potential for some minimal alteration of the image in the transcoding process. This is the trade-off for shooting with such a compressed format.
And if so, please consider the following. I used a mini DV camcorder to transfer all my tapes to my computer and to an external hard drive. Have I already lost that image quality in doing so using iMovie?
No, capturing DV material from tapes using iMovie is a direct digital transfer. DV/NTSC or DV/PAL video as captured from tape is the muxed (mixed audio and video) DV stream. It is an exact replica of what is on the tape.
If so, can Final Cut Pro import from iMovie and improve that quality by decompressing or will I need to retransfer the tapes using Final Cut Pro or will the difference be too negligible to be noticed and not to bother.
FCE and FCP capture material from tapes slightly differently than iMovie. While iMovie brings the material from the tape unaltered, FCE/FCP uses Quicktime during capture to pull the audio and video into separate streams with in the resulting file. By having the audio demuxed, the programs are able to edit multiple video streams simultaneously while iMovie is limited on one at a time. The video quality is not altered in this demuxing process.
If you choose to shoot with a tapeless camera and edit the material in FCE or FCP, FCP has a wider range of formats that can be handled by the program, but in no way will it deal with them all. Many still need to be converted into an edit friendly format before you bring them into the program.

  • I need to make a stop start animation using iMovie. I need the time factor to be 0.03. Every time I make an adjustment it goes to 0.1s which is too slow. Does anyone have a suggestions?

I need to make a stop start animation using iMovie. I need the time factor to be 0.03. Every time I make an adjustment it goes to 0.1s which is too slow. Does anyone have a suggestions?

First, for Stop Motion Animation, there are better tools. These include iStopMotion and QuickTIme Pro Version 7.
If you want to do it in iMovie, it is possible, but slow.
First, go into iMovie Preferences, and make sure you check "Display Time as hh:mm:ss:frames". This will let you edit to the frame lever rather than to the nearest 10th of a second.
Second, see this Tutorial by Jon Walker on how to edit down to a single frame in a still image sequence.
You can modify his technique to get 2 or three frames.

  • How much computing horsepower do I really need to use iMovie?

How much computing horsepower do I really need to use iMovie effectively?  I'm trying to make a one-hour movie from HD camcorder clips and still images.  My iMac 24 with Intel Core 2 Duo running at 2.33 GHz and 2 GB of RAM severely bogs down and regularly locks up or crashes.  Now that I've painfully managed to insert all of the video clips and still images, my iMac won't play the video back smoothly so that I can edit the work.  Within a second or two, the video either stops or becomes extremely jerky, while the audio continues to play.
Do I really need an $8000 MacPro 12-Core computer running at 3.3 GHz, with 32 GB of RAM, twin, 2 TB hard drives, and a $1000 27-inch Apple display, or will something less costly work fine for producing videos?
    Thanks for any advice,
    Joe

Thanks for your reply, Klaus1.  I'm currently running Snow Leopard.  I'd considered upgrading to Lion but was told, even by Apple, that I wouldn't be satisfied with its slow performance on my iMac 24.
I have plenty of hard drive space with 160 GB available on my internal hard drive, but I've been storing the archived video clips and the iMovie projects on a fire-wired, external 2 TB drive.  Could it be that using an external hard drive for the iMovie project is part of the performance problem?
A quick check on the Apple website shows that my iMac 24, which was manufactured in mid-2007, can support up to 4 GB of RAM.  I wonder if I should consider a RAM upgrade before upgrading the entire computer.  How big a deal is it to replace RAM in the iMacs?

  • Why is my macbook pro overheating when I use iMovie?

I have a macbook pro with retina display - OS X Version 10.9.2
I use it on a wooden table, nothing is blocking the fan and it overheats all the time. It's been happening every single time when I use iMovie and the fans start go crazy within two minutes of the application being opened. I am constantly using iMovie (I think it is iMovie 10) for school and this is a recent problem. When this happens I close the application, wait for the fans to return to normal and then open the application again until it happens again. This isn't really a solution I just get worried when the fans start to go crazy so I shut down the application in hopes that it won't happen next time.
Is this happening to anyone else?
    Thanks

    Hi
    True answer - NO
    Thoughts - YES
My MBP got 4Gb RAM - and get's a bit hot - 8Gb and it might get cooler - less swapping to Hard Disk
If Hard Disk is filling up - it also get's hot - I try to keep at least 25Gb free space on Start-Up Hard Disk (external HDs will not help as Mac OS and applications do not utilize space there by automatic - BUT to free up space on Boot HD they are important)
Running several applications in background e.g. Internet etc - doesn't make my Mac any Cooler - but turning them OFF helps a bit.
Exchanging the Main Boot Drive to a SSD-Hard Disk also reduces energy use - and speeds things up quit a bit too (not tested by me)
BTW - When I use Video-CODECS, Photo and Audio file formats - not really easy for iMovie to use - my iMovie also get's full hand task to do. So by converting material first (outside iMovie) the iMovie projects runs so much better.

  • Using iMovie for a presentation?

I'm hoping to use iMovie 09 in dual screen mode for a presentation. The idea is that all my photos and video clips are lined up in the timeline on the 1 screen, which I select when I need them to play on the presentation screen. Unfortunately, as far as I can see, when I move my mouse over the Event or Project windows, it shows/previews that clip on the main screen. This problem isn't specific to the dual screen mode, it also does it when you're working with 1 screen. Is there a way to disable this feature so that I can use iMovie for my presentation?

well, after the 2nd coffee I'm even faster! (early morning here... )
.. .the thing with creating a folder and placing all my media in there, could you go into that in a bit more depth please? If that's an easy way of displaying the media on a second screen, I guess that would be the thing for me to do!
hmm, well, easy yes, but less convenient than usage of a designated presentation app. Keynote has some nice features .. but, I'm no Apple salesman.. here's the 'Russian techniqué' :
first, we have to collect the stills..
in Finder create a New Folder 'Presentation Stills' (or.. whatever), perhaps on Desktop.. (or anywhere, you like..)
if stills are NOT in iPhoto, COPY them (hold ctrl-key and drag 'n drop) from actual location into 'Pres_stills'
if stills are in iP, collect them in an album, Export >> into your Pres_Stills folder.
    2nd) same with movies..
    create Folder 'Pres_movs' ..
any existing movies get copied as stills
any iMovie Projects have to individually 'Export using QT' ..
3rd) connect 2nd monitor, goto System Prefs, choose etx. monitor as 'main screen' (=drag menu bar to that device)
    3.5th) Test!
.. perhaps, you have to adjust sizes etc ...
    4th) Showtime!
open both folders, drag to your Macbook's screen.
double click a still => Preview will open on main screen, showing still...
double click a mov => QTplayer will play on main screen.
    savy? ...

I can no longer read my bank statements. I believe they are using a PDF to display this information. If I go to chrome it will open the bank statements but Firefox no longer open these flies. Why??????

It's very unusual to get no results for PDF in the Application preferences list. It's possible that the file which stores those preferences might have become corrupted. Perhaps it would be best to rename or delete the file and let Firefox re-create it.
    Here's how:
Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using
Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button
Switch back to Firefox and Exit
Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename '''mimeTypes.rdf''' to something like mimeTypes.old
Restart Firefox. After things setting down, check the Application preferences again to see whether PDF is listed and then set the drop-down on the right side to the desired action.
orange Firefox button or classic Tools menu > Options > Applications
    Does that work any better?

  • Using iMovie to save project files to external hard drive?

I have a MacBook Pro with very limited space on the internal hard disk drive. I also have a few FireWire external hard drives.
A friend recently gave me his Hitachi DZ-HS300A mini-DVD camcorder so I could copy footage off of it, load it into my machine, edit it and upload it (several minutes) to YouTube. He can't do this because he lives in a remote area where there is no broadband yet.
I almost never use iMovie. I was wondering if there is a way to save the project file to an external FireWire drive so that there will be no large video files clogging up my laptop's internal hard drive. Can this be done? Is there an iMove preference I have to change?

You should generally leave the iMovie Project file on the boot drive. The Project File is mainly a small text file with in and out points.
The iMovie Event file is where the video assets are stored. You can store events to an external hard drive in two ways:
    1) As you import from the camera, you will see an import screen. You can select the external drive on the import screen
    2) If the event is already on your internal drive, you can click View/Events By Volume. Now you can drag and drop the event to the external drive in the Events SOurce List in iMovie.
For your external drive to be visible to iMovie, it must be formatted HFS+ or HFS+ (journalled).

  • Using iMove HD to capture in Mpeg-4 format

I have iMovie HD 5.0.2 and was wondering if there is anyway for me to capture video that is saved directly in Mpeg-4 format instead of as a DV clip. I noticed that when you start a new project in iMovie HD, you can select between the ff video formats: DV, HD, Mpeg-4 and iSight. So I assumed that if I select Mpeg-4, than it would capture my video footage from my DV cam (a sonypc350) as Mpeg-4. But it doesn't. It still caputers it as a DV clip. So is there anyway that I can capture in Mpeg-4 format using iMovie HD. My DV cam has analog to digital pass through and I'm trying to figure out a way to create a make-shift TiVo kinda system with the tools I have available.

...a way to capture directly into compressed Mpeg-4 format because DV clips take up a lot of hard drive space. ...
    Nope.
iM's internal file format/compressor is dv, any other will/has to be converted...
    besides:
mp4 is a lossy codec - you will never get the pic quality as dv...-
video editing is a disk drive consuming process - no workaround.
sorry to say that (owner of ~0,7TB of HD… )
