Using & in xml element

Hi Javaties
I have a doubt in xml.
Can we use & in a xml element i.e
<root>
<child&parent>Data</child&parent>
<root>

I would highly suspect that you cannot do that. But what's stopping you from trying it? You're going to feed some XML into an application to process it, right? Otherwise there's no point in creating the XML in the first place. See what happens when the app tries to process XML which looks like what you're proposing.

  • How special characters can be used in xml element TAG.

    Hi,
    In my project data is fetched from the database and stored in the xml file. Data contains European characters as well. When I tried with UTF-8 it was giving error but when I changed the encoding to ISO-8859-1, XML generated.
    Well now I am stuck with a problem and as I dont know much about XML, I am trying to get some knowledge from you.
    I have xml tag like: <Name&>Rohit</Name><employee#>78023</employee>.
    I am getting the error message top level element must be defined. This is because special characters are in TAG. But it doesnt give error if I use special characters/European char in value( like Rohit*).
    I dont know much about CDATA. Any help from your end will be greatly appreciated.Can this problem resolved if i use java function outformat.CDataElements(String[]) and pass the elements name.
    Thanks!!

    Client: I want this element name.
    You: The XML recommendation doesn't allow you to have that element name. If you make documents with that element name then no XML software will be able to read them. It just isn't going to work. Insisting on that would just be stupid and pointless. (Okay, you don't say that last sentence that way to your client but that's how it is. Explain it more nicely than that.)

  • Dynamically Using  XML Element name as column names

    I have a requirement where I need to show data for 31 days or days of the month based on the data in the xml result.
    Based on the month you are running the report, some may have 28 elements and some may have 31 elements in the data for days.
    How do I dynamically show 28 columns or 31 columns etc - the trick here is I have to use the name of the XML element and not the value for column names.
    My requirement is like this.
    Deal --------01 -------- 02 -------- 03 -------- 04 05 .upto ... 31days
    Deal 1 : 22218 : 32218 : 11918
    Deal 2 : Qty1 : Qty2 : Qty3
    I need to be able to use the XML Element names , Day01, Day02 etc as the column names in the report.
    How can I use the XML Element name - in this case I need to remove the "Day" and use just the number part for the column name.
    I can't have xml element names as numbers, thats why "Day" string is prefixed.

  • Howto use Converting File Content in Rec. Adapt. to suppress a xml-element

    Hi,
    we use PI/700, SP6.
    I have following structure (example):
    <MsgOut>
      <Sender>Partner1</Sender>
      <Receiver>Partner2</Receiver>
      <FlatPayload>
         blabla blabla
      </FlatPayload>
    </Msgout>
    Now I wanna use a XI-File-Adapter to write just a Flat-File with the content (of the element <FlatPayload>):
        blabla blabla
    (in other words: I wanna suppress all other xml-elements beside of FlatPayload)
    But I'm not able to configurate this with the function "Converting File Content"
    I tried different possiblities:
    e.g.
    setting yyy.fieldFixedLengths = 0 and yyy.fixedLengthTooShortHandling = Cut
    (yyy = Sender and Receiver)
    or
    just defining "MsgOut,FlatPayload" as RecordSet Structure (without Sender and Receiver)
    Result: no success.
    Now my question: is it possible to suppress some xml-elements?
    Thanks for your help!
    bye
    Wolfgang

    HI,
    You can suppress the XML Nodes/Elements over here. Not Fields ..
    For e.g if your outout xml is like this
    <MsgOut>
        <Sender>Partner1</Sender>
        <Receiver>Partner2</Receiver>
    <FlatPayload>
       <flatdata> blabla blabla</flatdatat>
    </FlatPayload>
    </Msgout>
    In this case you can suppress the <FlatPayload> node/element here.. Using Cut Parameter in the Receiver File Content COnversion.
    /people/sravya.talanki2/blog/2005/08/11/solution-to-the-problem-encountered-using-variable-substitution-with-xi-sp12
    So in your case, you can restructure your data type as you required.. I have mentioned in vice-versa here
    Hope this helps,

    I think you could try the way of write your own class derived from XmlWriter.

  • Multiple Receiver tag using listTemplateId in Elements.XML - SP2013 EventHandlers

    Hi,
    We have a client requirement in our new SP 2013 site to copy sub site  task items from individual Task lists to a common Custom list in parent site. For that we have created an Event Handler and added the logic for copying the task item to parent site
    list in "itemAdded" event.
    We have given   <Receivers ListTemplateId="171"> in Elements.xml file and it works for normal task lists.
    But it does not seem to work for task lists associated with workflows.
    Kindly advice whether we can resolve the issue using the same elements.xml by adding additional <Receivers> tags.
    Thanks in advance,
    Nithya k pillai

    You will have to remove workflow on subsite and then activate it on root site once the task is copied.

  • Howto dynamicly bind XML element to a TextInput using BindingUtils?

    The question is: Howto dynamicly bind XML element to a
    TextInput component using BindingUtils?
    Now I use following codes:
    <!--
    [Bindable] private var xml: XML =
    <item><label>list1</label></item>;
    // initialize code for application's initialize event
    private function init(): void {
    BindingUtils.bindProperty(txtDemo, "text", xml, "label");
    //click event
    private function test(): void {
    xml.label = "something";
    // txtDemo.executeBindings(); //---- no use anymore
    -->
    <mx:TextInput id="txtDemo"/>
    <mx:Button label="Test" click="test()"/>
    My really idea is when bindable xml property is changed, then
    the textinput will be updated as hoped. However, no update happens
    to me when I click the Test button.
    But, if I make codes like that:
    <mx: TextInput id="txtDemo" text="{xml.label}"/>
    the text will updated when xml changs.
    So, what happened, I indeed need the dynamicly bind to the
    textinput compont.
    Help me. thanks.

    You could use an ObjectProxy since all subproperties will
    then be bindable:
    private var _xml:XML =
    <item><label>list1</label></item>;
    private var _opXML:ObjectProxy = new ObjectProxy(_xml);
    then in your init() function you declare _opXML as the host
    object with the bindable property "label"...
    // initialize code for application's initialize event
    public function init(): void {
    BindingUtils.bindProperty(txtDemo, "text", _opXML, "label");
    //click event
    private function test(): void {
    _opXML.label = "something";
    You'll notice that if you check your original _xml.label
    property with ChangeWatcher.canWatch(), it returns false. But if
    you create a dedicated object with a property that can be declared
    as bindable, canWatch() returns true. You'd probably be best off to
    write a lightweight class that can act as your model if you want to
    work with dynamic XML binding using Actionscript. This will allow
    you to use a bindable getter and setter that will give you the
    dynamic functionality you're looking for.
    Hope that helps.

    Why don't you try Xerces2?Why don't you tell him to use the javax.xml APIs that are already built in? And that use Xerces2 under the hood? Instead of throwing out a suggestion that might lead to him adding another copy of Xerces into his application?
    @OP there are several techniques:
    - string replacement as suggested by jschell
    - XML parsing to a DOM and then use the DOM API
    - XSLT
    Which you should use depends on the complexity of your requirement.

    Mac

    Okay, after peering over your code and trying a few things out I see one immediate problem and one possible improvement.
    The problem lies in this:
    1. if condition is true, remove item
    2. check recursively
    The problem is .. if an item is removed, the following recursive check will always fail. However, the entire loop is wrapped into a try..catch, so InDesign will not alert you that it failed. Instead, it will continue with what's after the loop, exactly because the try..catch is around the entire loop!
    Change the loop code to this
    if((elm.xmlElements[i].markupTag.name == "http") && (elm.xmlElements[i].parent.markupTag.name == "extlink"))
        var Store_CitAttri = elm.xmlElements[i].xmlAttributes.item("c_style").value;
        if(Store_CitAttri == "URL")
          elm.xmlElements[i].remove();
           foundtext = foundtext + 1;
           continue;
    Query_Remove(elm.xmlElements[i]);
    so the recursive checking is skipped. You can also remove the entire try..catch block, as this may hide additional errors ...
    The improvement is: as I started reading this thread from the top again, shouldn't you be removing the "extlink" items, rather than just the "http" ones inside?
    If so, remove the parent of the found item (which is always the "extlink"):
          elm.xmlElements[i].parent.remove();
    -- and, as this will break the loop (because you just removed the set of elements it was working in!), replace 'continue' with 'return'.
    Hope this helps

  • Missing XML Element when using asset from library

    This is not really a scripting question but I seem to be unable to find any regular ID forum and it has something to do with a scripting workflow I established for a customer.

    The asset in the library consists of a number of textframes and has the structure e.g.:
    article
    box
    box
    Now the customer needs new templates (that is assets in the library) and we cannot produce them anymore. It seems that as of CS 3 5.0.4 Adobe changed the behavior of the library. Dragging e.g. two box-tagged boxes with an article parent XML into the library leads to an asset without the article element. Can someone confirm this? And more important is there a reason to it? Or is there a way to configure the behavior?
    I guess I could create a parent xml element by script after placing the element but then I would need to redo all existing libraries.
    Thank you,
    Ralf

    while( testIterator.hasNext() ) {
       Element testElement = (Element)testIterator.next();
       String code = testElement.getChildTextTrim("code");
        if( null == code ) {
               continue;
       String analysis= testElement.getChildTextTrim("analysis");
       //same for description
    }

  • Delete xml element not used in document

    Hi,
    If you have a number of texts tagged with an xml element and then delete the text, the element still exist in the structure.
    You can see the element still connected to a text, by the blue diamond on the element symbol.
    But i want do delete the elements that have no connection to texts, but cant find the right property to look for.
    In Java script CS4.
    Anyone knows?
    /Mikael

    If the (text) element is unplaced, its parentStory will be an XmlStory rather than a Story.
    So try:
    var elements = app.activeDocument.xmlElements[0].xmlElements.everyItem().getElements();
    for (var i = elements.length - 1;i >= 0;i--){
        if(elements[i].parentStory.constructor.name === "XmlStory"){
            elements[i].remove();
    This is untested. If you have tagged graphics frames it will need to be modified to not error on those.

  • Help needed - why we use ejb-ref element in ejb-jar.xml

    hi all
    can anyone tell me what is the purpose of this element in the ejb deploy descriptor? thanks

    Suppose u have bean A, which needs to look up another bean B. Normally you wud need to use the jndi lookup using the initial context to access the bean B's home interface. If you use ejb-ref element you dont need to know the JNDI name of bean B. You can use ejb-ref-name instead. So you can say this is a short cut method of looking up and getting a reference to a bean's home object.

  • XML tag markers moved: Find and Replace causing problem in xml elements

    Hi All,
    I am doing find and replace using GREP. While using the expression like $1, $2 (Found Items) in the change to field it changes the placement of tag marker. If the found item is a part of two of more xml elements, I am getting a serious problem while replacing it. (ie. The xml tag markers are moved.)
    See the screen shot below, then you may get better idea. And help me to overcome this issue.
    This is just an example to show you what i'm trying to say, there are so many cases like this.
    Original text/ Before doing find replace
    After replacing

    Hi Peter and John,
    but it seems to me that the example is looking for any space that
    follows a semi-colon and has two word characters following it, and
    repalce that with an em space. I think you could do the same using look
    behind and look ahead and not need to replace the found text.
    Yes you are right about the look behind and look ahead. I'd like to show some more examples to show what the actual problem is,
    Original/Before Replacing,
    (Consider there is another case here, instead of em-space some times normal word space will also be there)
    Using the Grep:
    Find What---------> ^(\d+\.(?:\d+)?)~m
    Change To------------->$1\t
    After Replace:
    Did I make any sense? Eventhough this will not make any changes in the layout, my requirement is to insert the tab out-side the tag marker not indise.
