Using Java to dev for Revo

Hi,
I would like to use Java to develop for a Revo (EPOC Symbian OS). Does anyone have any ideas about were I could look for support? Does anyone know if it is possible?
Thx in advance,
Matthew

  • Can I use Java Web Start for my situation?

    Hi, we have a client/server application we're about to deploy to many customers, and I'm wondering if we can make use of JWS and/or JNLP. Here's our situation:
    - The server has a database and a small java application (running as a service) which runs scheduled tasks.
    - Clients connect to the database (server) and search/manage data; we've packaged the client so that it appears as an exe (on windows) or as a native Mac application.
    1) On a regular basis (usually overnight) the small task scheduler application on the server will connect (via internet) to our company database and download any upgrade. It then stores it in the local server (in a database blob), and needs to overwrite and restart itself (a download could include an update to the task scheduler program itself). There could be a new task in the update that alters data in the database.
    2) Whenever a client connects to the database, it first checks to see if there is any update (a new jar), and if there is we want to get it onto the local machine, stop & restart automatically, with no user intervention.
    NB.
    (a) The clients will normally be on an internal lan with no internet access.
    (b) The client computers are often switched on and applications start automatically, so the auto-update process needs to be unattended.
    (c) We'll assume that we'll install the client and server with sufficient disk access to update themselves, regardless of who's logged in. Since this application runs on both Mac & windows, we need to consider this since an admin will often install the software but it will sometimes be someone else (with lower privilege) logged on to the machine.
    (d) We want these processes to be seamless with no user IO or gui (the server - if linux or OSX - may infact only have a console, and no gui subsystem). On the client side we see no need to indicate that we've updated the application (it's of no interest to the end-user), although it's likely when it happens the startup splash screen disappears and reappears.
    Can anyone tell me if JWS/JNLP can help to carry out these tasks more simply, or give me any suggestions in general?
    Thanks in advance,
    Phil

    I would suggest storing the install on a network
    drive. This would make it simpler for the clients to
    install off.Thanks for the suggestion. This may be hard to make 'generic' though across multiple platforms. Also in some larger customer sites they may have a dedicated DB server, while at a small site there is only one computer with the DB and client on the same machine; thus creating a network drive on a machine that may not even have networking configured could be a problem.
    You could use JWS, but I am not sure it would make it
    any simpler to implement. It may be more trouble
    than it is worth in your situation.That's what I'm beginning to suspect.
    I would also suggest you consider using a VPN to make
    all these systems accessable, then JWS would do what
    you need for you.I think maybe the part I need to know more about is JNLP and how (if) that can assist in updating the software. Any good tutorials (maybe I missed them on the sun site)?
    Thanks

  • Infinite loop error after using Java Sun Tutorial for Learning Swing

    I have been attempting to create a GUI following Sun's learning swing by example (example two): http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/learn/example2.html
    In particular, the following lines were used almost word-for-word to avoid a non-static method call problem:
    SwingApplication app = new SwingApplication();
    Component contents = app.createComponents();
    frame.getContentPane().add(contents, BorderLayout.CENTER);I believe that I am accidentally creating a new instance of the gui class repeatedly (since it shows new GUI's constantly and then crashes my computer), possibly because I am creating an instance in the main class, but creating another instance in the GUI itself. I am not sure how to avoid this, given that the tutorials I have seen do not deal with having a main class as well as the GUI. I have googled (a nice new verb) this problem and have been through the rest of the swing by example tutorials, although I am sure I am simply missing a website that details this problem. Any pointers on websites to study to avoid this problem would be appreciated.
    Thanks for your time-

    um, yeah, you definitely have a recursion problem, that's going to create an infinite loop. you will eventually end up an out of memory error, if you don't first get the OS telling you you have too many windows. interestingly, because you are deferring execution, you won't get a stack overflow error, which you expect in an infinite recursion.
    lets examine why this is happening:
    in main, you call new MGui().
    new MGui() creates a runnable object which will be run on the event dispatch thread. That method ALSO calls new MGui(), which in turn ALSO creates a new object which will be run on the event dispatch thead. That obejct ALSO calls new MGui(), which ...
    well, hopefully you get the picture.
    you should never unconditionally call a method from within itself. that code that you have put in the constructor for MGui should REALLY be in the main method, and the first time you create the MGui in the main method as it currently exists is unnecessary.
    here's what you do: get rid of the MGui constructor altogether. since it is the implicit constructor anyway, if it doesn't do anything, you don't need to provide it.
    now, your main method should actually look like this:
    public static void main( String [] args ) {
      SwingUtilities.invokeLater( new Runnable() {
        public void run() {
          MGui app = new MGui();
          app.createAndShowGUI();
    }// end mainyou could also declare app and call the constructor before creating the Runnable, as many prefer, because you would have access to it from outside of the Runnable object. The catch there, though, is that app would need to be declared final.

  • Using java to listen for a keypress when the program is not in focus

    I want to set up a program where no matter what other program I'm using, when I press Ctrl+F1 my program will take focus and run another function or two. Is this possible and if so how can it be done?
    Thanks.

    Ok Mr. Smartass...Ok
    I'm building a browser that is always open, and when
    a user presses Ctrl+F1 (notice, just those two keys,
    I don't care what else they press...) the browser
    will open up. That way, you don't have to wait for it
    to load all the time.You have two ideas here. One is having a universal key map that always gets ctrl-f1 sent to your app. The other is a program that is constantly running so that you don't have to wait for it to open up. The former is not possible (and this is a good thing) As warneria and I have been saying, it is bad design for an app to try to force an OS to implement this kind of feature.
    If you're not going to help please don't post at all;
    it's a waste of time for both you, me, and anyone
    else who may need help on the same subject. Why wouldBelieve it or not, I am helping you.

    Beyond that, even if you're not a malicious hacker - and I am sure you are not - if someone posts a solution to your problem, malicious coders then will have learned how to do it. If you think you're programming or using these forums in a bubble, you are not.

    No. If you aren't running the pop3 or smtp services then the Java mail API won't help you at all, unless there is a SMTP server somewhere that you can use to deliver mail to your Notes server. If you use Notes for external emails there must be a server somewhere!!??
    You can use the Notes Java API to create and send a document if you have the DIIOP service running on the Notes server.

    HI,
    I am using Java mail API for sending PDF as attachment. Here is my sample code

    I am generating String for PDF file using iTEXT but I am unable to find out mimetype for passing into DataHandler as second paramete.
    Any idea?
    Thanks
    Shailesh

    Don't convert the data to String. It isn't text so
    you'll damage the binary content by doing that. In
    the "demos" directory of your JavaMail download
    you'll find a ByteArrayDataSource class you can use
    instead of a FileDataSource. Yes, this worked for me. I create the pdf in memory as as StringBuffer and I just changed the code from
    messageBodyPart.setDataHandler(new DataHandler(pdf.toString(), "application/pdf"));
    to
    messageBodyPart.setDataHandler(new DataHandler(new ByteArrayDataSource(pdf.toString(), "application/pdf")));
    and it worked.
    Thanks a lot for your help,

  • Implementing partialTriggers  using java code???

    Can we perform Partial Trigger on a component using java code?
    For example,
    I have a textBox component and a commandButton.If bind partialTriggers attribute of the textBox to the commandButton, it gets renedered whenever I click the commandButton.
    Can I acheive the same,by writing some piece of java code inside the action listener of commandButton?
    Regards,

    If you bind the component to a bean attribute (i.e. attrXYZ) you can use
    RequestContext.getCurrentInstance().addPartialTarget(attrXYZ);in the listener to update it.

    Once i have the .java file created from the .jsp, I will compile .java to create the .class file and invoke the .class in peoplecode by using java apis available in peopletools.

    Is there a way convert a binary .exe file( compiled by
    another compiler) into Java .class/.jar file ? Anyone
    know of a free program that can do this?It's not possible. There are many decompilers and disassemblers for Java but nothing will take you from ANY binary to Java source. It would be the end of computing as we know it and the beginning of a new era -:)

  • Can i create more than one attributes for the custom class created using java API

    Hello everyone,
    I have been creating class and its attributes programatically using java APIs, I want to know that is there any way to create multipal attributs for the same class in just one call of API with all the options for each attributes,
    thanks

    You can create a new class and define all of the Attributes at the time the class is created - this is the preferred way of creating classes. Use the addAttributeDefinition() method on ClassObjectDefinition. If you need to add attributes to existing classes, you can only add them one at a time (using the addAttribute() method on ClassObject).
