Using MD5 to generate Dimension IW Keys

Hi Guys
I had wanted to use MD5 to hash concatenated strings in a dimension table to come up with IW Keys. I must be missing something because I couldn't find much around the net when looking for it.
Basically were looking at facts and dimension data in Star Schema. Now typically in a star schema for each dimension we generate an IW Key which we store in the fact to link the two:
So a region table might look like:
Region=IW Key
A=1
B=2
c=3
And A fact table would be like
RegionIWKey,Metric1,Metric2
1,3.0,4.0
2,3.0,4.1
3,3.0,4.0
1,3.2,4.3
Now to load the fact we need to load the dimensions first and then get the IW key, and this takes a lot of time.
After all that here's the question?
Why couldn't we just hash the dimension fields to get an IW Key then we could load facts and dimesnions in parallel.
My understanding is that an MD5 Hash should do this, correct? Then we can index the hashed field. If I am missing something has anyone found out a way to do this successfully and get hashes with no collisions.
Thanks for light anyone could shed on this.

  • Generating a Primary Key WITHOUT using a Sequence Number

    Hi Everyone:
    I am trying to generate a primary key without using a sequence number or row count. What the user wants is the maximum value of the highest primary key already in the row set plus 1.
    For example, this is a Oracle Table (eg. named BatchSubmit) used to initiate batch job submission, and the primary key is an integer named "Runcard_Number". If there are 4 rows in this table and the Runcard_Numbers are 2, 6, 8 & 12, then the next generated Runcard_Number would be 13.
    I have looked throughout this forum and see how to generate numbers using a DBSequence, but the user does not want that. The numbers mean something to them, and they don't want them randomly assigned other than the max in the rowset plus 1. To do it in SQL it would be - select max(Runcard_Number) + 1 from BatchSubmit;
    I have been looking at using a hasnext loop and moving the maximum value to the new Runcard_Number, but I am very new to JHeadstart/JDev and I do not know where to put this. I am assuming the BatchSubmitImpl.java, but I'm not sure where to put it or which method to utilize
    I would appreciate any assistance.

    Mary you're in luck, 'cause, I've been playing with the same thing, these days and found that..
    You can do that in two ways (that I know):
    - by calling a stored function that does max+1 (you can look it up in Dev's guide for Forms&4GLDevs 10g chapter 25.5 Invoking Stored Procedures and Functions)
    - by calling hardcoded or dinamicaly written statement, that does the same
    public Number callStatement(String stmt)
    Number id = new Number(0);
    Row idRow = getDBTransaction().createViewObjectFromQueryStmt(stmt).next();
    if(idRow != null)
    Object o = idRow.getAttribute(0);
    if(o != null)
    if(o instanceof Number)
    id = (Number)o;
    else
    throw new JboException("Conversion error!");
    return id;
    You should call it in
    protected void doDML(int operation, TransactionEvent transactionEvent)
    switch (operation)
    case DML_INSERT:
    // call here
    super.doDML(operation, transactionEvent);
    break;
    case DML_UPDATE:
    super.doDML(operation, transactionEvent);
    break;
    case DML_DELETE:
    super.doDML(operation, transactionEvent);
    break;
    Enjoy!

  • Generate a surregate key only when insert a new row - (SCD1)

    Hi all,
    I´m starting with OWB (10gR2) and I'm creating a simple template dimension with SDC type 1 with one source, one target and a sequence do generate the surrogate key.
    The main properties configurations are:
    - Target property: Loading type = INSERT/UPDATE.
    - Only match the natural key between source and target.
    - Only use the sequence.nextval when inserting a new row.
    - Mapping: Set based.
    The generated code was something like this:
    {color:#000080}+MERGE INTO DIM_DEFAULT+{color}
    {color:#000080}+USING SCR_TABLE+{color}
    {color:#000080}+ON(SCR_TABLE.NATURALKEY=DIM_DEFAULT.NATURALKEY)+{color}
    {color:#000080}+WHEN MATCHED THEN+{color}
    {color:#000080}+UPDATE SET NAME=SCR_TABLE.NAME+{color}
    {color:#000080}+WHEN NOT MATCHED THEN+{color}
    {color:#000080}+INSERT(SK_DEFAULT,NATURALKEY,NAME)+ {color}
    {color:#000080}+VALUES(SQ_DIM_DEFAULT.NEXTVAL,SCR_TABLE.NATURALKEY,SCR_TABLE.NAME)+{color}
    Ok, it works fine! But the merge statement generates a new SK for each merged row even if the action is update! What I want is a new SK only when the process inserts a new row. Hard-coding, I possible solve this problem creating a function to return the nextval from a sequence and put it on the insert clause like this:
    {color:#000080}+MERGE INTO DIM_DEFAULT+{color}
    {color:#000080}+USING SCR_TABLE+{color}
    {color:#000080}+ON(SCR_TABLE.NATURALKEY=DIM_DEFAULT.NATURALKEY)+{color}
    {color:#000080}+WHEN MATCHED THEN+{color}
    {color:#000080}+UPDATE SET NAME=SCR_TABLE.NAME+{color}
    {color:#000080}+WHEN NOT MATCHED THEN+{color}
    {color:#000080}+INSERT(SK_DEFAULT,NATURALKEY,NAME)+ {color}
    {color:#000080}+VALUES(FN_SQC_NEXTVAL('SQ_DIM_DEFAULT'),SCR_TABLE.NATURALKEY,SCR_TABLE.NAME)+{color}
    Hard-coded it works fine as I need and that´s the point that I want to know:
    It´s possible perform this solution using OWB?
    I tried to use Constants but this solution doesn´t work then I tried an expression calling my sequence.nextval function but the result was:
    {color:#000080}+MERGE INTO DIM_DEFAULT+{color}
    {color:#000080}+USING (SELECT FN_SQC_NEXTVAL('SQ_DIM_DEFAULT') AS SK_DEFAULT_0,NATURALKEY,NAME FROM SCR_TABLE) AS SCR_TABLE+{color}
    {color:#000080}+ON(SCR_TABLE.NATURALKEY=DIM_DEFAULT.NATURALKEY)+{color}
    {color:#000080}+WHEN MATCHED THEN+{color}
    {color:#000080}+UPDATE SET NAME=SCR_TABLE.NAME+{color}
    {color:#000080}+WHEN NOT MATCHED THEN+{color}
    {color:#000080}+INSERT(SK_DEFAULT,NATURALKEY,NAME)+ {color}
    {color:#000080}+VALUES(SK_DEFAULT_0,SCR_TABLE.NATURALKEY,SCR_TABLE.NAME)+{color}
    It´s the same of merge the row using the SEQUENCE.NEXTVAL direct.
    Does anyone have a workaround to solve this situation?

    Hi,
    Perhaps this comes a bit late but...
    Have you tried to change attribute properties in the mapping? For simple example you have a source table in sa-stage which have to fields: code (varchar2(2), natural key) and description (varchar2(50)). You want to map those fields to target table where you have 3 fields: id (NUMBER(10), surrogate id, nextval from sequence when new row inserted), code (as from the source, natural key, the field to determine if the coming row is new or one to be merged) and description as in source table. Fields and datatypes are just for an example.
    When you have source and target tables in your mapping (and fields mapped), drag the sequence operator to the mapping and map the nextval to target table's surrogate id field.
    - Change target table operator properties:
    * loading type = UPDATE/INSERT
    * Match by constraint = no constraint
    - Change target table attribute properties for:
    * surrogate id field: Load column when updating row = no; match column when updating row = no; load column when inserting row = yes
    * natural key field(s): Load column when updating row = no; match column when updating row = yes; load column when inserting row = yes
    * all the regular fields: Load column when updating row = yes; match column when updating row = no; load column when inserting row = yes
    - change the deleting rules as you want them to be
    - Validate your mapping. If the green light is shown, the settings in field properties are suitable for merge.
    Hope this is what you wanted to get. I think this kind of solution works fine. Trigger in the table that holds and where one inserts millions of rows sounds scary...
    Regards,
    jk
    Added text: sorry about false alarm. I think that was what you did. The solution above steals the nextvals from sequence. Perhaps no-native-english-reader should be more careful when reading questions ;-)

    using md5 MD5 is a non-reversible hashing, not an encryption!

  • How can I use Automator to toggle the Function Keys?

    I am trying to create a Automated process to toggle the Function Keys on my keyboard. This is because I use several programs, including After Effects, which use the F1-12 keys, but when I am not using that program I commonly use the Apple-defined shortcuts on the keyboard. I have a full-sized keyboard, hence no Fn key. So that's out right away – I've read several comments on this topic where people suggested that this is the ONLY option. I refuse to beleive that.
    Automator contains a "Watch Me Do" feature, which I have tried to use to record this process. Problem is, it never clicks the right object. If I record clicking the dock, the magnification (I suspect) throws off the virtual-controlled mouse and picks the wrong object. If I record the Apple Menu route, it gets it about 1/2 the time.
    I think what I'm really looking for is a console command I can feed into the Terminal which toggles the keys. It seems to be that this HAS to be an option, even if it is more than one line of commands. I believe if I can feed this process into Automator, it would work.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance, Mac Geniuses!

    iKey lets you define function keys per application. You seem to want to turn on & off the defined apple keys.  Not sure if these keyboard re-mappers will do the trick.
    Here is my other most favored application. Of course, I haven't checked these out in newer OS's. I'm a Tiger man myself.
    iKey is a front end program that simulates typing and mouse movements. I use iKey to remap the Function keys.
    "iKey is an automation utility, a program that creates shortcuts to accomplish repetitive tasks. In essence, an iKey shortcut is a little program in its own right, but you don't need to know the first thing about programming to create an iKey shortcut. All you have to do is put together three necessary parts of a shortcut: One or more commands that give the shortcut its functionality, a context in which it runs, and a launcher that defines how the shortcut is activated."

    iKey  has a little more function then the previous free version called youpi key. For many years, I used youpi key before switching to iKey.  It works fairly well for me in MAC OS 10.4 although not officially supported.  The youpi key download is hard to find & no longer here.

    *Examples:*
    I have the common programs that I use assigned to function keys. I have F4 assigned to Firefox. When I want to start FireFox, I press F4. When I want to switch to firefox, I press F4! Starting & switching to an application in Mac OS are the same thing in Mac OS.
    Here is an example of to assign volumn control to a function key.

    Here is my script for listing my application folder. I have it assigned to function-key 6.
    tell application "Finder"
       open folder "Applications" of startup disk
       select Finder window 1
       set bounds of Finder window 1 to {-3, 44, 691, 545}
       --set position of Finder window 1 to {33, 44}
       set position of Finder window 1 to {60, 45}
       activate
    end tell
    The second portion of this script was generated in the script editor record mode. After I recorded the script and did some editing, I copy the script to ikey/youpi key.

  • Can I use multiple values for a rollup key on the same Endeca record?

    We have a business need to to aggregate our records using different criteria, based on user navigation. We are thinking of using a rollup key with multiple values to help with the aggregation, but we are running into some issues.
    Here is a made-up xample of what we want to do: assume we have a group of products and these products can be organized into groups using parent-child relationships. We would like to create an aggregate record for each parent, and we want the aggregate record for each parent to include all the children for the parent. To achieve this, we use a field called "parent_rec_spec" that holds the parent record spec and we set the same value on the field for the parent and its children. When we do rollup using the parent_rec_spec as the rollup key, we are able to see one aggregate record for each parent (with its children).
    The previous setup worked perfectly for us so far. But now we are getting a business requirement that allows children nodes to be linked to multiple parents at the same time. We were hoping of using another dimension to limit the records based on user roles/characteristics , so that only applicable parents/children are displayed (for example, we can use "market" as an additional filtering property, and we decide to show all parents/children for "North America", while hiding the parents/children for other markets).
    This caused an odd behavior when children are linked to multiple parents. For example, assume that SKUs A and B were linked to parents in "North America" and "Europe" at the same time, and assume that the user chose the "North America" market. The navigation state would eliminate the parents/children that are no in North America, and will also cause the parents/children that are labeled for North America to show up and be aggregated correctly. This however will lead to the creation of additional aggregate records for the A and B using the parent_rec_spec values that would have linked them to the Europe parents (even though the parents are hidden away).
    Here is an example index file that we used to load the test data:
    Update||1
    Market||North America
    Record Type||Product
    Name||Parent 1
    rec_spec||P1
    parent_rec_spec||P1
    EOR
    Update||1
    Market||Europe
    Record Type||Product
    Name||Parent 2
    rec_spec||P2
    parent_rec_spec||P2
    EOR
    Update||1
    Market||North America
    Record Type||Product
    Name||Child A
    rec_spec||A
    parent_rec_spec||P1
    EOR
    Update||1
    Market||North America
    Market||Europe
    Record Type||Product
    Name||Child B
    rec_spec||B
    parent_rec_spec||P1
    parent_rec_spec||P2
    EOR
    Update||1
    Market||North America
    Market||Europe
    Record Type||Product
    Name||Child C
    rec_spec||C
    parent_rec_spec||P1
    parent_rec_spec||P2
    EOR
    Update||1
    Market||Europe
    Record Type||Product
    Name||Child D
    rec_spec||D
    parent_rec_spec||P2
    EOR
    In this setup, we have parent P1 marked for North America with children A, B and C, and parent P2 marked for Europe with B, C and D as children. When we use North America as a filter in the navigation state, and parent_rec_spec as the rollup key, then we will see an aggregate record for P1, A, B and C. But we will also see an aggregate record for B and C by itself (presumably because of the other parent_rec_spec value on these records).
    The actual data that we are testing with is more complicated, but the end result is similar. We also noticed that the additional aggregate records would not be created always, depending on the ordering of the records.
    The question that I need help with is this: is there a way to fine tune the rollup logic so that it can only include certain records (in the example above, we can change the rec_spec from PA and PB to PA_North_America and PB_Europe and then we would be interested in rolling up using values that end with NorthAmerica).
    By the way, we considered using separate rollup keys for each context (like parent_rec_spec_north_america and parent_rec_spec_europe), but the number of contexts is dynamic, and might grow large. So it is not easy for us to create the additional properties on the fly, and we are concerned about the possible large number of dimensions.

  • How to generate a Unique key based on a some String value

    Hello every one,
    I am sorry , If I post this question in wrong group... I have a requirement to generate a unique key ( what every it may be alpha, numeric or alpha numeric) based on some String..
    For ex : String str = "AbCX" - Gives a unique key based on "AbCX" value..
    Is there any way we can get the unique value using Java ?
    Thanks

    May be not what you are looking for, but here's may idea:
    use a sequence (db sequence) and add it the the string value. This way the value is unique, because the sequence is unique. So you could omit the string theoretically, but your requirement is met.
    It's very easy to get a unique sequence number from the db using java, depending of the technology you use (which you did not say :-( )

    My other computer died and have my bookmark synced with Firefox sync, however, I no longer have access to sync key and I do not want to generate a new key and erase my old bookmarks. How do I retrieve them?

    Sorry, without the Sync Key you can't use Sync to recover your personal data. If you have another device that was connected that Sync account, you can recover your Sync Key from that other device in the Password Manager on non-mobile devices. See - [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/how-do-i-manage-my-firefox-sync-account?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=where-can-i-find-my-firefox-sync-key#w_where-can-i-find-my-recovery-key this].
    ''Firefox Sync wasn't intended to be a "backup" medium, it was made to keep certain data synchronized between multiple devices.'' That "key" is used to encrypt your data before being uploaded to the Sync server and decrypt the data as it is downloaded to one of your devices. Only you have access to that "key", to maintain security over your data no one else knows that "key".
    If you still have that old PC or the hard drive from that old PC, you can connect it to the new PC via USB with a USB enclosure, and you should be able to recover that data if the hard drive didn't fail.<br />

    Please provide me with some pointer as to know where the things are going wrong.

    If you generated your original schema using toplink.ddl-generation, then later dropped it and created it then you should keep in mind the sequence table does not get dropped. This can lead to an initially 'empty' database with a PK sequence starting at '2' if you have one persistence unit and one entity. Can you steadily duplicate this or did you just notice that your persist started with an key of '2'? Just a thought.

  • How to use md5 Checksums to verify thousands of copied files

    Hello,
    So I need to be able to verify the succesful copy of thousands of files using md5 checksums.
    is there a program for this or a string of code for terminal?
    Please help.
    Cheers.

    I cover how to do that in the link above, but to quickly do this, run the following command on both folder paths:
    find -s ~/Downloads -type f -exec md5 -q {} \; | md5
    This will generate a list of md5 checksums for each file in the directory (in this case, the Downloads directory in your home folder, but you can change this to whatever you would like), and then create a summary checksum of the collective checksums.
    In my case, the above command yields the following checksum:

    Doing this on my Documents folder yields the following checksum:
    782845544f0ecf8a7ae5fa66197d6abd
    You can then compare these to see if they are different. In this case they are, indicating the folders do not have the same contents.
    Keep in mind this may take a while to run, as checksums will have to be computed for each file in the directory. While this is a raw command, you can save it in a script and then simply run the script with an input argument to make it easier. For example, the following script should work:
    #!/bin/bash
    find -s $1 -type f -exec md5 -q {} \; | md5
    Saving this in a text file, naming it something like "dirsum" and then making it executable in a path location such sa /bin (or a custom added path) will make it easily accessible, so you can run the same command by simply typing the following in the Terminal (in this case to calculate a checksum of the Downloads folder):
    dirsum ~/Downloads

  • How to generate the primary key item automatically in form region?.

    Hi,
    The primary key item is generated automatically in report region.I already give the pl/sql function for generating of primary key.but I want to generate the primary key value automatically in form region only?.how to do this?.Pls help me..
    Thanks and Regards.

    One of the guidelines when selecting column for a primary key is:
    Choose a column whose data values are never changed. A primary key value is only used to identify a row in the table, and its data should never be used for any other purpose. Therefore, primary key values should rarely or never be changed.
    Cheers!

  • Generate the primary key  automatically while records are saved

    Hi experts,
    I need to generate the primary key of a custom table automatically when a new record is saved. Pleas help asap. Urgent.

    Hi Rob and vikas,
       Thanks for your answers . Both of the solutions you mentioned were syntactically correct and activated but they are not populating the numbers.In case of Rob's soultion  I guess I am not able to catch the return number. I am giving the code below. So Please look into it,
    FORM gen_manu_siteid .
    data : number type zsiteid value 155.
    CALL FUNCTION 'NUMBER_GET_NEXT'
      EXPORTING
        NR_RANGE_NR                   = '02'
        OBJECT                        = 'zmanusite'
        QUANTITY                      = '1'
      SUBOBJECT                     = ' '
      TOYEAR                        = '0000'
      IGNORE_BUFFER                 = ' '
      IMPORTING
        NUMBER                        = number
      QUANTITY                      =
      RETURNCODE                    =
    EXCEPTIONS
      INTERVAL_NOT_FOUND            = 1
      NUMBER_RANGE_NOT_INTERN       = 2
      OBJECT_NOT_FOUND              = 3
      QUANTITY_IS_0                 = 4
      QUANTITY_IS_NOT_1             = 5
      INTERVAL_OVERFLOW             = 6
      BUFFER_OVERFLOW               = 7
      OTHERS                        = 8
    *IF SY-SUBRC <> 0.
    MESSAGE ID SY-MSGID TYPE SY-MSGTY NUMBER SY-MSGNO
            WITH SY-MSGV1 SY-MSGV2 SY-MSGV3 SY-MSGV4.
    *ENDIF.
    ztblqm_sqm-zsiteid = number .
    ENDFORM.                    " gen_manu_siteid
    When this did not work. i tried Vikas's soution and the code i used for this is
    FORM gen_manu_siteid .
    data : w_count like ztblqm_sqm-zsiteid,
           e_wa like ztblqm_sqm occurs 0 with header line.
    select max( zsiteid ) from ztblqm_sqm into w_count .
    w_count = w_count + 1.
    e_wa-zsiteid = w_count.
    modify ztblqm_sqm  from e_wa.
    ENDFORM.                    " gen_manu_siteid
    Please look into this and give me a solution.
    NB: I have tried them at the event 01 include.

  • Use of various balance dimensions

    Can some tell me what is the use of various balance dimensions
    i.e when to use the following dimensions:
    Assignment Level within a run
    Assignment Level in the current earnings period
    Assignment Level all time
    Assignmnet Level in the current processing year
    ASGYTD= Assignment Level in the year
    ELEMENTITD= Element Entry level for all time
    ELEMENTPTD= Element Entry level for this period
    Please can some one throw some light on the above Balance Dimensions so as to know how one has to use these in the FF.
    Please help

    Hii
    Don't create unique key with a column of a fact table which refers with a foreign key to another table (dimension)! This data must be unique in the dimension table!
    But indexes in the columns of foreign keys will speed up your queries.
