Using Network Utility

I need to find out the "DNS settings" for a website/blog. What's the best way? Network Utility? Which aspect...
Thanks in advance.
Here is the questions I was asked:
It was suggested that I point our website domain name to our blog so that when people who are used to visiting the web site type in that address, the blog will come up instead. In order to do that, I need the DNS setting for our blog. It's usually a string of numbers like:
362.214.785.898

Lookup in Network Utility can get an IP address ("string of numbers") from a DNS name, for example, doing a lookup on "ford.com" gives a response of :-
Lookup has started…
; <<>> DiG 9.6.0-APPLE-P2 <<>> ford.com +multiline +nocomments +nocmd +noquestion +nostats +search
;; global options: +cmd
ford.com.                    900 IN A 136.1.240.248
so the IP address of ford.com is 136.1.240.248
Having said that, I'm wondering why you need your web sites IP address.
Do you host your own web site? Or directly control it's content?
You can make a web page automatically redirect the visitor to another site (google "html redirect"), which may be easier than updating DNS.

  • When using Network Utility, does Link Speed tell you the actual speed of the network?

I'm trying to see whether a power line adapter I installed in my home network is faster accessing the internet than the WiFi from my Time Capsule.
Using Apple's Network Utility, my power line/ethernet connection reads as being 1Gb/s, which is obviously much faster than the 130 Mb/s of the WiFi:
But are those the actual speeds my iMac is receiving, or are those just what the specs of the device I'm using should be receiving (as in "ideal, what-the-manufacturer claims the speed should be")?

Are you sure you only want to test internet speed?
Internet speed is affected by many factors that are beyond your control - it is also likely that the internet connection is one of the slowest parts of your network.
You may be on an ISP connection that has 'contention' e.g. a shared connection across many users - their use can effect what rates you get. You will probably see different rates for the time of day too. When everyone gets home & starts watching Netflix you can see drops in speed.
Powerline could be many times faster than the internet connection, in which case you will see no improvement because the bottleneck is not the local network - it's the internet.
To truly see if the powerline adaptors are faster you should take the internet out of the equation. It's fairly simple to do if you have a device on your network that supports file sharing. Ideally you would use another Mac connected via ethernet to the network (that should remain the same in all tests). A Time Capsule could be used if you can write data to a sharepoint.
Copy a large file onto that destination & time it.
    Repeat on wifi.
It's best to shutdown any background apps to be sure that other items are not hogging all the data transfer. Take many tests to get a decent average.
Divide the file size by the time taken to see a rough figure for the MB/s (MegaBytes per second) bear in mind that network transfer is usually measured in bits/second, so they won't be the same as the link speed figures.
This is generally smart enough to convert if you give it the correct units…

  • Snow Leopard Network Utility versus earlier Network Utility

I have two Macs running 10.6.1. On one of them, when I use Network Utility to check for open ports, it always shows port 21 open on any machine I query. However the other Mac shows port 21 to be closed. I've run Network Utility on Macs running 10.5 and 10.4 and they show port 21 closed as well. I'm querying other Macs on our network which have their firewalls on and are not allowing ftp access. Yet for some reason, Network Utility on this one Mac shows all of them as having port 21 open, whereas if I run Network Utility from other Macs, they all show port 21 as being closed.

It may depend on which subnets the Macs are. Anyway, to be sure from the terminal just type:
    telnet <Mac's IP> 21
If the port is closed you get "connection refused", otherwise you may get a prompt. Even better try FTPing those macs.

  • Network Utility questions

When using Network Utility, under the "info" tab, how do you reset your "Transfer Statistics"? Then if doing a ping test is there a way to view how many packets were sent, received, & lost?

    Hi
+". . . if doing a ping test is there a way to view how many packets were sent, received, & lost?"+
This is what I see when I conduct a ping test:
    Ping has started…
    PING 192.168.10.254 (192.168.10.254): 56 data bytes
    64 bytes from 192.168.10.254: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=0.785 ms

    64 bytes from 192.168.10.254: icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=1.483 ms
    --- 192.168.10.254 ping statistics ---
4 packets transmitted, 4 packets received, 0.0% packet loss
    round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 0.785/1.143/1.483/0.289 ms
As you can see at the end of the output it displays how many packets were sent and how many packets were received. You even get a round trip time. Conducting the test via Terminal (/Applications/Utilities) gives you the same information.
+". . . under the "info" tab, how do you reset your "Transfer Statistics?"+
One way would be to disconnect the network cable (if wired) or switch off Airport (if wireless).

  • Port Scan with Network Utility

I'm a little confused by the results of a port scan I just completed using Network Utility. With ARD checked in the Sharing Services pane I believe that ports 5900 and 3283 are opened but while the port scan revealed that TCP 5900 was opened there was no mention of 3283. Could this be why I'm having trouble Observing and Controlling a remote machine? I have also checked all Access Privileges for ARD.
Hoping someone can throw a little light on the subject.

Thank you JD and Dave for your responses.
I've moved on a little since my post of a week ago and although I still can't work out why the Network Utility port scan didn't detect 3283 I have been able to connect to and Observe and Control a remote client on my small LAN. I have two machines connected through a Linksys router - one connected with airport and one directly connected with ethernet.
On the Admin machine (machine A) I have four accounts: New York, LA, Chicago and Miami.
On the Client machine (machine B) I also have four accounts: London, Paris, Rome and Berlin.
The main account for machine A has been New York and for machine B has been London. I have been unable to use the Observe and Control feature from New York to London although all other services are available.
As a test I opened three other accounts on each of the two machines and discovered that I could Observe and Control using any combination of the new accounts but still not the original New York account. I have also connected to machine B using a dns service address so this tells me that port forwarding on the router is configured correctly.
I believe there is probably something in the configuration or preferences files of the New York account which is preventing me from connecting to any of the other accounts on machine B. The error message I get when trying to Control or Observe is "Connection Failed to Machine B".
Any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

How to restart base station from airport utility? I used to be able to do it remotely
I currently use a Mac Pro 10.8.4 and have a time machine for wireless 6.3 (630.34). Sometimes I cannot connect to the internet and use network preferences to diagnose the issue. This results in being told to restart the wireless. The airport utility includes the drop down option of restarting but is not clickable so I can't choose it.
With my prior macbook and same time capsule, etc  if i had problems connecting to the internet I would run network diagnostics to help out. This included clicking on the airport utility ---> base station --> restart. This worked most of the time.
Bottom line, is there something I am missing in not being able to restart the wi-fi remotely? ]
    Thanks in advance

You are likely forgetting a step.
    Open AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon
Click Edit in the small window that appears
Now click the Base Station menu.....top of the screen....not the Base Station "tab" in the center of the screen
    Click Restart

I'm trying to add my HP wireless printer as a "new client" to my wireless network using Airport Utility, but I can't find that option in the new version.  I've downloaded all available updates of the OS and the utility..  Help!

Why would you need to ADD a new Client. Unless the APE sytem is completely different then any other Wireless router the printer should get an IP address from the router. That is IF the printer is setup to get an IP from the LAN DHCP server.
Now you may want to make that IP it does get a Staticly assign IP address so it never changes, which will screw up printing if it does change. But i don't know if you can do that with APE routers.

Is your AirPort Express an older 802.11g model? If so, you will need to install v5.6 if you are running OS X Lion or 5.6.1 if running OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard. Unfortunately, the iOS version of the AirPort Utility cannot administer these older base stations.

  • Modifying JAR file using java.util.jar package  over the network

    Hello,
I am modifying a JAR file programmatically using java.util.jar package. The time taken to save the contents to a local disk is very less (around 1 sec) . When I tried modifying the JAR from a remote machine over the network (from mapped drive or shared folder of WIN NT), the time taken to save is 15-20 times more.
I am recreating the whole JAR while modifying. Is there any way to improve the performance. Or is it possible to write only the changed files?
    Thanks,
    Prasad Y S.

When you "update" a jar file, you must always recreate it from scratch.

  • Time machine: An error occurred while copying files. The problem could be temporary. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk.

Time machine backups are failing. I've followed the instructions I found on the Time Machine troubleshooting page (http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html) but have gotten to where I don't know what to do next.
    Sequence of events:
The main error message is always:
An error occurred while copying files. The problem could be temporary. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk.
Yesterday, I opened Disk Utility and verified the disk. Got this error:
Error: This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD. Restart your computer, holding down the Command key and the R key until you see the Apple logo. When the OS X Utilities window appears, choose Disk Utility.
I ran Disk Utility and repaired the hard drive. Then I manually started the backup before going to bed, figuring it was going to take a long time to run. When I got up this morning, the backup had failed with the same "could be temporary" error. I checked the log, which says:

You have repaired your boot drive (which is good) but have you repaired your time machine drive?  I don't own a Time Capsule so I don't know if disk utility can operate on it.  If it can, you should repair it as well.  You may need to erase it and start a new backup.  That happens to time machine volumes from time to time and is why people who are serious about their data never rely on a single source of backup.

  • TS2570 Question re: "Start from your Mac OS X Install disc; use Disk Utility"

I've worked my way through the step-by-step trouble shooting in the TS2570 article up to "Start from your Mac OS X Install disc; use Disk Utility". So far, every step results in the same outcome - my formerly trusty 2007 Intel duo core iMac (24") will not start up, freezing on a grey screen with a blinking question mark on a folder. I don't completely understand this next step. I have both a Leopard and a Snow Leopard disc. I'm not positive whether these were for the iMac, or my old Macbook Pro. I assume this makes a difference.

Question (?) Mark, Blinking Folder, or Gray Screen at Startup
These are related but not identical issues. Their causes are outlined in Intel-based Mac- Startup sequence and error codes, symbols. Solutions may be found in:
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
A flashing question mark or globe appears when you start your Mac
Mac OS X- Gray screen appears during startup
In most cases the problems may be caused by one or more of these:
    a. Problem with the computer's PRAM - See Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
    b. Boot drive's directory has been corrupted - Repair with Disk Utility.
    c. Critical system files are damaged or deleted - Reinstall OS X.
    d. The disk drive is physically non-functional - Replace the hard drive.
Note that the information I have provided is what Apple recommends, If other users suggest different solutions than found here, then be sure what they recommend does not impact on your warranty, if any, or ability to get continuing Apple service.
Please don't start removing drives or changing cables unless you know what you are doing and have exhausted other non-invasive alternatives outlined here. If you perform any work yourself that is unapproved by Apple, then you will void any warranty you may have and lose all further Apple Support.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
The main difference if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion is that you must first boot from the Recovery HD. Simply boot from the Recovery HD to perform the above.
Reinstall Snow Leopard Without Erasing The drive
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing The Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
