Using new iPod on guest computer?

Hi there
Just got an iPod for Christmas and I want to download some music. The trouble is that I am in Canada on my dad's computer, but I live in England and won't return there for another week.
The user agreement that comes up when I hook the iPod up to the computer's USB port says that I am only able to download the iPod software to one computer. Since I want to save this download for my computer in London, is there any way I can download some music from the iTunes on my dad's computer here in Canada during the next week?
Many thanks for any suggestions on this....
Cheers
Simon

You can use your iPod on multiple computers. However as the previous poster has pointed out, if your iPod is set to update automatically you'll lose anything you add from your Dad's computer when you connect to you own. If you want to avoid this, you have to set your iPod to manual update:

  • Using New iPod Mini w/Existing iTunes on Computer

I already have one iPod, andhave iTunes loaded on my computer.
I have just acquired a second, new iPod Mini, and would like to start it up for the first time.
Can I simply plug it into my computer w/the existing iTunes loaded on it?

First, make sure that the iPod is fully charged.
iPods come pre-formatted for Mac, so you may need to format it for Windows.
Make sure that you have the latest iPod Updater software
You also need to install the Updater software by double-clicking on the file that downloads.
After you install the Updater to your PC, reboot your computer.
    After rebooting, run the Updater.
Go to: Start ==> Programs ==> iPod.
It should initialize then ask you to connect an iPod.
Connect the iPod when asked (not before) and you should have two options available: Update or Restore.
-- Choose the Update option and it will update your iPod's firmware to the latest version.

  • How can I use two Ipods on one computer.

I was wondering if it is possible to use 2 Ipods on one computer without having to reload all of the music to the new library.

If you are adding a second iPod for your own use, just connect the new iPod to your computer and follow the on screen instructions. It will update from your existing library. Depending on the size of your library and the type of iPod you choose you can have it update all songs and playlists, selected playlists only or you can manage it manually
If the iPods belong to different users then there are actually a few methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer: How To Use Multiple iPods with One Computer
Just to summarise what's in the link above which is a little out of date:
Method one is to have individual Mac or Windows user accounts which by definition would give you completely separate iTunes Music folders and libraries.
Method two is to set your preferences so that any or all of iPods get updated with only certain playlists within one library:
Loading songs onto iPod automatically - Windows
Choosing the update option "Sync Music - Selected playlists" allows you to create a playlist specifically for each iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used by the other iPod. You can read more about playlists at these links:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs

Another option when using a single library is to set any or all of the iPods to manual update: Managing content manually on iPod

  • How do i use 2 IPODs on 1 computer

how do i use 2 IPODs on 1 computer. We had 1 working fine. We created a new account for the second one and when we sign in on the new account it shows all the songs from the old account. How does the computer know which IPOD to account goes with which IPOD. It did not ask us for any additional info.

The iPod nor the computer keeps track of which iPod goes to which account. However, once you have synced the iPod with the different library, you will be prompted with a message that begins with, "This iPod is linked to a different library do you want to sync it now..."
Did you copy the iTunes folder for both accounts.

Personally, I used "Method Two" from that article at home.

  • Using two iPods on same computer

Our daughter has loaded her iPod onto our family computer and created an account. I now have my own iPod for which i want my own library, which will include photo's. How can I use my iPod and sync to my library without syncing to my daughter's.
I also need to download the library on my iPod onto my own library. I somehow had a library but it has been wiped clean due to a restore. Is there a way of reverse backing up from my iPod to my computer.

See this Apple KnowledgeBase article; it should help:

Is there a way of reverse backing up from my iPod to my computer.
Transferring tracks from an iPod back to iTunes has been covered here a number of times already, but again:
First, you need to prevent automatic synchronzation with a blank copy of iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer, hold down the Shift and Ctrl keys in Windows. This should stop the iPod from auto synching with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 3 and 25 seconds depending on your computer.
Then if you're using iTunes 7, you can then copy music that you purchased from the iTunes Store back to iTunes directly (use the Transfer Purchases From iPod command under the iTunes File menu).
If you're not using iTunes 7 or want to copy back other tracks, the easiest way will be to search VersionTracker for "iPod". You'll find a number of utilities that can transfer your tracks and your playlists from your iPod back to your PC.
It's also possible to do this manually, but the procedure is rather involved. If you're interested, though, see this thread:
    MacMuse: Computer crashed
    Hope this helps.
Forum Tip: Since you're new here, you've probably not discovered the Search feature available on every Discussions page, but next time, it might save you time (and everyone else from having to answer the same question multiple times) if you search a couple of ways for a topic, both in the relevant forums, in the User Tips Library and in the Apple Knowledge Base before you post a question.
    Regards.

  • Transferring from my new ipod to another computer

Is it possible to transfer all of my music from my new ipod to another computer that I have? I copied all of my CD's on my home computer & now I am connected to my other computer which has my old music library on it.....is it posssible to have your library on two computers?
    compaq   Windows 2000

If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

  • Installing a new iPod on a computer with another iPod already authorized

I already have one iPod authorized for this computer. My wife has a new ipod that is not getting recognized. Should I deauthize the computer to get her ipod recognized? Thanks!

No that shouldn't make a difference. Read this info from Apple. Using multiple iPods on one computer. I normally use four different iPods off my computer and only had to authorize the computer itself once.

There is no limit to how many iPods can run on a single PC. Or how many PCs a single iPod can connect to. Either by Apple design or by any legal issues.

  • Can I use 2 iPods in one computer?

I have an iPod Nano and my brother has an iPod Mini. We only have one computer in the house. Can we plug and use both iPods in one computer without affecting the contents of each of our iPods? Because it might delete my songs when he plugs in his iPod and vice versa.

There are a couple of methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer. Method one is to have two Mac or Windows user accounts which by definition would give you two completely separate libraries. Method two is to set your preferences so that either one or both iPods get updated with only certain playlists within one library. Have a look at this article and see what you think and go for whichever you feel suits your needs best: How To Use Multiple iPods with One Computer
Method two, "automatically update selected playlists only" would allow you to create a playlist specifically for each iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used by the other iPod. Make your playlist a Smart playlist and limit the size to just below the advertised capacity of your iPod Mini or Nano (around 3700MB for a 4GB or 1800MB for a 2GB). You can read more about playlists at these links:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
A third option is to set one or both iPods to "manually manage songs and playlists" and drag whatever you like to them.

  • Issues using new iPod Touch due to OS

    Hello all.
I just got an iPod touch for my birthday, and upon attempting to use it, I was instructed to download and install the newest version of iTunes.
No problem, except I cannot install the newest version of iTunes because it won't run with my current operating system.
So, I went to download updates for my OS and I cannot install the newest versions (my machine tells me that my software is up to date when I try to use the software update tool - it's a big liar).
I am assuming that I cannot install OSX 10.5.whatever because I am currently running Mac OSX 10.3.9!! (Old, I know)
After hunting the apple site, and finally the web, I cannot find a download for 10.4.0 (tiger) and without it I am afraid that I can't continue to update my OS, and therefore I can't even USE my brand new iPod touch.
Help! Please! What do I do?

So, I went to download updates for my OS and I cannot install the newest versions (my machine tells me that my software is up to date when I try to use the software update tool - it's a big liar).
Software Update only shows you free updates.
I am assuming that I cannot install OSX 10.5.whatever because I am currently running Mac OSX 10.3.9!!!!! (Old, I know)
You can if the computer meets the requirements for it. A previous OS version isn't required for the retail package.
