Using OBIEE with Oracle Express Edition Database? SOLVED

I have a client that wants a quick demo of OBIEE. They sent us some csv files as the data source. I migrated them to Excel files for easier use, but the Excel files seem to have limitations on how I can combine the columns, such as concatenating and formatting.
I then loaded them into an Oracle Express Edition database, assuming more "database" functionality would be available to me. I was able to load them into the Administration Tool, but Answers gives me the following error when I try to view any results from the Express database:
Odbc driver returned an error (SQLExecDirectW).

Thanks for any help. This is my first non-guided attempt using OBIEE.

Thanks. I got some assistance from a co-worker that is also using Express Edition. (This is also my first use of Express Edition.)
Here is the tnsnames entry that I created, in case it helps someone else:

  • Connect Toad freeware with Oracle express Edition, How?

    Hello,
Although I know that people will raise the question this is Oracle and use SQL developer... Ok I do that and that is working fine. But on my work they work with TOAD so I like to work with TOAD as well and I want get some knowledge about Toad, TNSNAMES etc.
I've put the issue on TOAD forum as well, but till now I don't have received an answer.
I want to teach/learn myself Oracle by working with the Oracle express edition. I have downloaded the SQL Developer and I can work with it, which means I can create a connection.
Errors when I try to work with TOAD are:
If i try to make a connection:
    - "No valid clients found. You need at least one 64-bit client properly configured"
If I click on TNSNames editor:
    - Access violation in address xxxxxxx at module TOAD.exe"
I have installed oracle at D:\ORACLE_HOME. In this directory is also a TNSNAMES.ORA file.
I have installed the express edition with the installer. I have first installed the Oracle express edition and later TOAD.
I'm working on my local machine with:
    - windows 7 Home
    - Oracle 32 bit client:

    - NLSRTL Version 11.2.0.2.0 - Production
    - TOAD 64-bit freeware.
    *Questions:*
*- Are there certain environment variables necessary? Does TOAD expect Oracle at a certain directory?*
*- Is it necessary to add something to the PATH environment variable?*
*- 32-bit Oracle client will working with the 64-bit TOAD freeware?*

  • How to install Oracle Spacial with Oracle Express Edition 10g?

    Hello,
I'm new in Oracle Technology, I just wanted to try Oracle Spatial.
I don't know how to get it so I've installed Oracle Express and followed this tutorial :
    http://oracledbas.blogspot.com/2009/06/manual-installation-of-spatial-10g.html
They say Jserver, Oracle interMedia and Oracle XML Database have to be installed, but only one of them seems to be set up (XML DB), I can't install the others.
If someone can help me to install Oracle Spatial, it would be nice. Bye.

If you want to use Oracle Express Edition, note that the 11.2 version is available on beta now:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/express-edition/overview/index.html
Its a while since I've used XE but from what I recall you get the Locator functionality, but not Spatial. That makes sense as XE is free, which Spatial needs to be licensed.
However, you can do an awful lot with Locator. To see if it is setup, just check if you have the MDSYS schema. Then describe the SDO_GEOMETRY type:
    describe mdsys.sdo_geometry
If they are both there, then you're in business.

  • Is DBAT Connector  compatible with Oracle Express Edition

    Hi All,
This is the first time that I would be working with DBAT connector.
I would need to  start POC on DBAT Connector 11.1.1.5.0 with oracle DB.
As part of POC, I would like to know,  whether  I would  need to install Oracle EE (10g or 11g or 12g) or Oracle Express edition of the same version would suffice.
This is just to reduce Oracle  EE license issues for POC.
    Would you kindly suggest.
    Thanks in Advance.

Please refer the certification table of DBAT connector:
    https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E22999_01/doc.111/e20277.pdf
Note: The Express edition of any of the above version will work.

  • How to use unixODBC with Oracle Express on Ubuntu 8.10?

I downloaded Oracle Express a couple of days ago, so I am totally new to Oracle.
I tried connecting via unixODBC, using dsn=oracledsn, user=dba, password=abcd and received error info:
    1: st=01000, nerr=0, msg=
    [unixODBC][Driver Manager]Can't open lib '/usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/lib/libsqora.so.10.1' : file not found
but the shared 'so' library actually does exist at the path above. I also set
ODBCINI=/etc/odbc.ini;export ODBCINI and immediately checked it was in the environment.
    The .ini files are:
    /etc/odbcinst.ini
    [OracleExpressdrv]
    Driver = /usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/lib/libsqora.so.10.1
Description = Oracle 10g express driver
    /etc/odbc.ini
    [ODBC Data Sources]
    oracledsn = Oracle Express DSN
    [oracledsn]
    Driver = OracleExpressdrv
Note: The dsn and the driver names are enclosed within square brackets but came out as web links above in the preview.
After many hours of googling I have not been able to find how to connect via ODBC to a local (on my PC) Oracle Express.
    Advice would be most welcome.

    hello
I have the same problem. My system is Fedora 11
I set the odbcinst.ini and odbc.ini files as you mentioned. I also set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH :
    $ echo $LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    /usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/lib/
when I try to connect using isql, I get that error:
    [01000][unixODBC][Driver Manager]Can't open lib '/usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/lib/libsqora.so.10.1' : file not found
    [ISQL]ERROR: Could not SQLConnect
I couldn't figure out what I am missing.
    May someone help please?

  • Oracle Express Edition & Enterprise Edition together

    Hi everybody,
I have an application developed in VB.Net 2005 with Oracle Enterprise Edition 10g as backend.
I also have a distributed desktop user for the same application which uses Oracle Express edition database.
I want to write an application for Data synchronisation between Oracle Enterprise Edition and Oracle Express Edition for transfer of data to & fro.
How can I connect both the databases in my data sync application (vb.net 2005)? I am also using ODP.net in this application?
    Any solutions ?
    Thanks
    Derasari

    Derasari,
I'm going to ask an obvious question here, if you can connect the desktop user XE database to the Enterprise database, why don't the desktop users simply connect to the Application Express instance running in the EE database?
It's an obvious question, but I had to ask it ;)

I see no initjvm.sql, initxml.sql and xmlja.sql scripts. There are catjava.sql and catexf.sql scripts in the rdbms/admin folder.

  • Version upgrade.   Oracle express edition

I down loaded from OTN the version of Oracle express edition onto my computer. It installed version 10.2.0.1.0 or Oracle.
I would like to upgrade oracle, but I am not sure what patches to down load. Can I just upgrade using the Enterprise Edition upgrade of 10.2.0.3.0 or do I have to find the specific patch. I have looked and I haven't been able to find Oracle Express down load or patches.
Also the version of Application express that I have is 2.1.0.00.39
Is there a later version of that as well. Do you happen to know that patch download. I have been trying to find that in Metalink and cannot either.

    Hi user568042,
This forum is for Oracle Application Express. Your are talking about the Oracle Express edition database, so your in the wrong place. :-)
It is not possible to upgrade or patch the Oracle Express edition database. The product is free but without the possiblity of patching.

Can i use Apex 3.2 with Oracle Express edition Oracle XE without paying any money and without violating liscence agreement ?

Yes, there's no licensing issue with this. Oracle encourages this upgrade in order that applications can take advantage of 3.x enhancements.

  • Can we use JVM and/or Oracle Multimedia with the Express Edition?

    Hi!
I wonder if there is any way to instal/use/activate JVM (implement java classes) and/or Oracle Multimedia?
I want to make a little application that would exploit those features ...
Can we do this with Oracle Express?
If so, how do I proceed?
    Thanks everyone.

    SadWell...
i was surprised that I have'nt been ask for a licence code or something...That's part of Oracle's distribution concept - you need to think about proper licensing yourself, until you get an audit. As you already mentioned, there could be user licensing - hard to manage with entering codes. On the other hand, there are OTN licensed downloads for development and evaluation purposes that don't need a paid license. Oracle doesn't want to build different packages for that, so you get exactly the same software for development your paying customer has for production.
    So...
So, knowing this, is it legal if I install it and exploit it for my own purposes?I recommend reading the OTN license you've accepted before downloading the files.
As I indicated above, it will (usually) allow you develop any application using any database release (including SE or even EE), without additional licensing. You need to make sure you never actually do any productive or testing-like activity on instances that are used under that license. Note that OTN license does not include support, so you are not allowed to install any patch you may have obtained from MOS using one of your companies support ids on such an instance.
is there any 'personnal' licence (less expensive that the $350 per user (minimum 5 users)) i can buy for myself to legally use it?If you think what you do is not covered by the OTN license, there is "Oracle Database Personal Edition". See [url http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/license.112/e10594/editions.htm#CJADFHGH]Database Licensing Information for details on the differences between the available database editions. According to the current price list, it's at $460 + $101.20 per year for support at the moment. The cheapest way to get a personal instance with access to patches & co.
BTW: There is also Standard Edition One at $180 per user, but probably still a little too expensive for personal use, because the 5-users-rule applies.

  • Oracle Database Configuration Assistant on Oracle Express Edition

I've just installed Oracle 10.2 Express Edition on a Windows XP Professional SP2.
Can anybody please tell me if it is possible to install the Database Configuration Assistant and how to do this? I just found some references about installing ODCA using oracle installer, however this is not available with the Express Edition
    thanks
    Pietro

DBCA is used to create new databases under the software of an existing home, or to add and remove features with a database.
Oracle Database 10g Express Edition software does not permit multiple databases (it only allows SID XE) nor does it permit adding or removing features. SO DBCA is not useful, not required - or included - with XE.
What are you trying to accomplish? (Multiple databases ALA SQL Server sense are done by separate Schema's in Oracle)

  • Preparing for Oracle OCA 11g using an Oracle Express 10g database

As a software application developer, I have been considering Oracle certification for a while to enhance my skill set. Unfortunately I don't have access to a commercial Oracle installation, and would like to use a free version of Oracle Express during my studies. The latest OCA courses largely focus on Oracle 11g, and it would appear that there is no free (Express) 11g database available yet.
Could anyone please advise me whether it would be possible and practical to prepare for the 1Z0-051 Oracle Database 11g: SQL Fundamentals I and 1Z0-052 Oracle Database 11g: Administration I exams using an Oracle Express 10g database instance, while accompanied by the relevant Oracle 11g study material? In other words, is the overlap between Oracle 10g and 11g sufficient that a solid understanding of 10g could allow me to successfully sit the 11g exams? Furthermore, would the Express edition of the database provide sufficient functionality to prepare for the Administration exam?

(http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=41&p_org_id=1080544&lang=US&p_exam_id=1Z0_051 says Exam 051 has been validated against Oracle Database 10g and Oracle Database 11g. Training on either version will be appropriate preparation.).
For 1z0-052 the situation is different. Oracle 10g express edition hides some of the administration tasks ... you really need to be using 11g.
If you dont waht Oracle 11g all over your regular machine then I would typically recommend install Oracle Enterprise Linux either on a spare machine with a dual core or HT processor and with 2GB or more of memory (eg Dell gx280 or better); or using a virtualisation solution on your current machine (ram would need to be 3GB or higher) (eg virtualbox or whatever ... though windows as a guest can have a license issue).

  • Can Oracle Express Edition be used for Internet Web Projects?

    Hi,
If we have a simple WWW application accessible from internet via WEB server and Web server uses Oracle Express Edition as a "data storage", can Oracle XE be used without violating license (XE limitations)?
    Thank you!

Don't see why not, although a quote from the Oracle Technology Network Developer License Terms for Oracle Database 11g Express Edition page at the License Rights section, "developing, prototyping and running your applications for your own internal data processing operation..." so that might be leaning into a bit of a grey area. A bit.
But with something available on the web you'll want to be sure to stay up to date with security patches- and unfortunately XE can not be patched. Just because something can be done, and even works for its intended purpose, doesn't necessarily mean that it is a "good thing to do".
Nothing wrong with trying something out for learning and figuring out how things work- apex is a nifty development platform, although I've not kept up with the details of the last couple of versions. Too many other things on the "got to learn this, got to do that" list(s).
