Using Paralles or bootcamp...question...

I've been thinking of installing Paralles or Bootcamp on my MBP. I was thinking...is there a way to totally disable internet connection when switching to PC mode? I don't want to risk getting viruses.
Thanks

First..personally I use VMWare Fusion...
Just run XP with with AVGFree, a free virus and spyware program. I have been using it for many years and have yet to get any type of virus. I am a Network Engineer with CCNA/MCSE certs and fellow employees are always bringing their PC's in for me to fix/clean etc. The only time I see issues are when people have no virus/spyware or outdated ones. Just a tiny bit of housework can keep a PC running as good as a mac. Just stay away from McAfee or Norton...resource hogs that are almost as bad as what they say they are trying to protect.

for the 2013 versions of macbook pro should I purchase 32 bit windows or 64 bit version to be able to install it on macbook and use windows with bootcamp?

Then you might check at any of the other university book stores or software stores or any computer store in town for the 64-bit version.
If you want to use the 32-bit version from the school (you probably get it for free or very cheap) then you could purchase Parallels and run it as a virtual machine concurrently with OS X. There are some caveats:
    1. You have to purchase Parallels (there may be an academic discount.) List is $79.95.
    2. Your computer needs minimally 4 GBs of RAM, but realistically 8 GBs would be better.
    3. Parallels creates a pseudo-drive on your hard drive. It could easily require 50 GBs of disk space.
Accommodating these might be more costly than buying 64-bit Windows 7. And, if you look online you may find them with an academic discount (or may be able to order it through the school.)

  • Hey guys is there a way to run PC games on a mac without using something like bootcamp.

Just woundering because I use to have a PC and my friend has one too and he plays games that don't have a mac version for them and I wan't to play those with him but don't want to give up my OS X software or use something like bootcamp of vmalwarefusion. Please help.

You can try to use WineBottler or CrossOver to install the game, but the performance will be terrible. If you want to play games, maybe that solution could work, but the best you can do is to install Windows on Boot Camp if you want the maximum performance

How do I cut and paste sets of lines for use in various Math questions?

Thank you for your reply. My problem is much simpler than you are thinking. As a teacher I prepare sheets with random number generators.
    EG. 256 + 389= ______    or         467
                                                 -  384
           469 + 753= ______
    or  5)750
On a PC I was able to start a page of A4 with one set and then drag and drop down and across the page.
On my Macbook I can get the numbers in but the lines do not copy. I asked at one of my One to One sessions and it had my 'trainer' stumped. He said he would make enquiries but so far no news. I am using Numbers.
I hope I have explained my 'problem' satisfactorily.

What can I do to boot?

Restart with the Option key held down.
If the internal drive shows up, it's the PRAM battery.
If it doesn't, insert a compatible Mac OS 9 or X install disk, click the button with the circular arrow, and either repair the internal drive or install a new OS on it. If it doesn't show up in Disk First Aid(9) or the Disk Utility(X), it's either not plugged in or needs to be replaced.

  • Is there a way to do a spelling quiz in captivate using images and not questions as reference.

Is there a way to do a spelling quiz in captivate using images and not questions as reference. Specifically i want have blank lines underneath an image, where the user looks at the image and types the correct letters to fill in the blank. For example a picture of a dog, with this _ _ _ underneath for the user to fill in, or in some cases perhaps having them fill in the vowel like so "d_g".I must have audio with this , as the students will be able to listen to the audio sound out the word phonetially to help them be able to type it!
    Appreciate any advice! Cheers!

  • How to install Windows XP using Snow Leopard Bootcamp

Have a MacBook purchased Mar '11 that came with Snow Leopard and when attempting to run Bootcamp to create Windows partition receive msg that only Windows Vista or 7 are supported.
Also have Macbook Pro Jun '08 and Macbook Apr '09 that have Windows XP partitions created with Leopard Bootcamp which Apple Genius Bar upgraded to Snow Leopard and the XP partitions still run with no problems.
Why does Snow Leopard require Win Vista/7 for new Bootcamp partitions but supports Win XP on partitions that where created with Leopard?
Is there a way to use Win XP with Snow Leopard as purchasing 4 Win 7, would never run Vista, is a VERY undesirable option.
First time using this forum, but will do whatever I need to ensure answer(s) get points.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Bob.
Your questions have simple answers. I hope you find them helpful.
    1. Yes, Windows XP will install on your MacBook Pro.
    2. Most games run properly on Windows 7 Home Premium. But if you're really a hardcore gamer, I suggest you get yourself a copy of Windows 7 ULTIMATE (It's a little expensive though).
    3. Home Premium costs around $120. Ultimate shoots up to $220. There is a Professional edition as well but that's not the type you want (It's particularly for business users, plus its $200). If your budget is restricted to $140, I suggest you go ahead with Home Premium. You can squeeze in a $20 software/game as well. I have been using it for quite some time on my MacBook Pro. It's great!
    Regards.
    Abhishek.

  • Bootcamp Question:  External HD

First off, my hats off to the Mac community. I'm a recent convert from PC to Mac.
Here is what I want to do, and tell me if its possible. I want to use Bootcamp to get Windows XP on my computer in order to run alot of the windows software that I cant live without and simply dont have the money to buy the mac versions.
I DO NOT want Windows anywhere near my internal harddrive. SO I went out and bought a 1TB harddrive. I want to put the Windows OS on that harddrive and keep my Snow leopard on my internal HD. When I start the bootcamp application it does not give me the option to apply the windows operating system to the new harddrive...it only gives me the option to put it on my INTERNAL harddrive. I dont want to do this at all. IS there anyway to keep the different operating systems seperate? Thanks.

"As a side note: I've already tried Bootcamp with W7 which works (install same way as with Vista), but could not get the wireless keyboard to work."
Huh.. I use VMware Fusion to run W7 (it is pretty slow, but I only use it for poker sites) and the wireless keyboard works fine. It IS the older keyboard with the clear plastic base, perhaps that is the difference? Or is it the virtual windows? As I type I think I answered my own stupid question. Mac OS is still running the hardware with the virtual windows running.
Anyway. It's a possible solution. Use VMware Fusion.
I was going to do the bootcamp, but it wouldn't partition the hd because apparantly the physical space on the hard drive that would be partitioned is being used by files that can't be moved. It makes sense that the entire NTFS partition needs to be together physically. My computer is telling me I need to do a clean install of OSX and then try bootcamp again.
My question is... If I back up using Time Machine and then do the bootcamp to install W7, can I then just restore the backup onto the smaller partition? Or does Time Machine want to put stuff back into the same physical address on the harddrive?

  • Using Logic with bootcamp

I'm wondering if i can run logic while running bootcamp. Basically what i'm trying to do is run FL studio as a vst inside Logic 8 (using rewire i think). FL studio is pc only and logic is mac only, so you can see my problem. Is this possible using bootcamp/parallels etc?

You're going to run into two major problems trying to do this.
    1) FL Studio and Logic don't "speak the same language" and really, unless you are using FL as some sort of software mixer, you won't be able to bus audio through FL and into Logic.
    2) ReWire is (to my knowledge) a Propellerhead software tool for getting the sounds in Reason into another host DAW like Logic or FL Studio.
This begs the question, why use FL Studio at all? I know the sequencer is really easy-to-use and visual and all.... but FL Studio can barely keep up with Garage Band these days, much less Logic.
You'll probably find yourself with less headaches trying to export all your old FL projects over to Logic, track-by-track or starting from scratch with your sounds in Logic. Either way, you're going to save a lot of time that you would just waste trying to accomplish something that can't really happen....

  • Installing windows 7 on bootcamp questions?

So because I'd like to be able to play a few games on my iMac, I've decided to install windows 7 in bootcamp and have it as a second operating system to use when I play games.
    However, I have some questions.
    1) In every tutorial I've seen, at some point they say enter your mac OS cd, but my iMac didn't come with a cd? (As I got my iMac a couple of months back) What do I do at this stage? Or do I not need the mac OS on cd anymore?
    2) Is there a chance if I don't do this properly that I could mess up my machine?
    3) Can I do this with an AMD radeon graphics card?
    4) what exactly do I do if i get the 'blank screen' problem? I've seen varied responses for this.. I have the latest iMac so i might have to do something different.
I'm probably making this sound way more complicated than it even is..
Thanks for any help in advance though!

You are reading old tutorials. Run the BootCamp program - on the first screen there's an option to print instructions. Do so. It answers most of the questions you have.

  • Installing Windows 7 with Bootcamp question

Hey guys, I recently switched over from a PC to a Mac this year and wanted to install Windows 7 with Bootcamp so I could do some gaming every once and a while. I've read that I can't use the restore discs that I got with my ASUS to install Vista, so that's out of the question. I also have a Windows 7 upgrade disc that I used a while back to install Windows 7 on the ASUS. Will that upgrade disc work if the ASUS is restored? If not, will an OEM copy of Windows 7 be all I need? A retail copy of Windows 7 Home Edition is kind of steep to only be used part of the time.
    Thanks in advance!

Well, "WHICH" Mac do you have?
Go to the Apple menu (upper left corner)/About This Mac/More Info and at the top (under Hardware content) it should say "Model name" and "Identifier". Then put it in your profile so you don't have to keep remembering to do it.:)
You might call/e-mail ASUS and ask if it can be used on another computer. Don't tell them it will be used on a Mac. Just tell them your thinking on building one from scratch.
If you have a "desktop" ASUS then you MIGHT be able to just switch over the HD after Upgrading it to 7, but I believe the ASUS, Dell, etc, setups are "matched" to the COMPUTER so it might not work. A retail full version of Window 7 will work. You might also try Microsoft and tell them the same thing, might be able to get another "Upgrade"?
I'm in the same boat, just play a few games on XP but want to get Windows 7, you have to spend $100 dollars more for "Pro" to get the "Windows XP Mode"! E-Bay does have it quite a bit cheaper then Microsoft sells it for.

  • Anyone using 3DSMAX via BootCamp or Fusion/Parallels?

Just about ready to convert our computers (10 PC's) to MACs, and we use 3DSMAX, Does anyone have success using 3DSMAX with virtualization software and or bootcamp?

I take it that is a Windows application, so perhaps you should post this question in the Windows Compatibility forum. This forum is not the proper one for your question. You might also post a question with the developer of the program's tech support.
