Using PDF files for items rather than .png.

Hi there
We have been looking into improving iBook production. We have a few books that feature elements that are comprise of a background image with text over the top. As the text isn't in an iPad-friendly font (I.e. not in iOS) and it doesn't have to be searchable. Previously, the items have been produced individually either in Illustrator or Photoshop. The main 'problem' with this is the plethora of file it creates, and the huge amount to time taken to apply style changes across all the separate items, save, re-import into iBA, and re-apply all the iBA-specific attributes.
In an effort to speed up production somewhat, we have been trying to create these items in InDesign, using style sheets etc to give standardised appearance across all the items, and then drag and drop into iBA. The advantage is that all the separate items are in one document, and all style changes can be instantly applied to all items instantaneously, saving time, space, and effort.
It places them as PDFs, and after unzipping the .iba file, the PDFs look fine, with pin-sharp text (as you'd expect, as PDF text would be vector data. Similarly, when you zoom in to the items in iBA, the text is still pin-sharp.
However, once the iBA is previewed on a iPad, the text goes a little blurry. As one of the fonts is a dot-matrix-type font, the effect is noticeable - all the dots blur together into a line.
Does anyone have any idea as to what is happening to the PDF between iBA and the iPad? Does it rasterise it at some point?

Hi Ken
'What leads me think it would?', well the fact that it worked, and looks ok. The iBook previews fine and works fine on the iPad.
We initially came up with the idea when we 'unzipped' an .iba file (you know, changing the .iba extension to .zip, then unarchiving the contents), and found that iBA itself had created .pdf files for the full-screen photos which appeared rotated and shadowed on the iPad page, but were viewed as straight, unshadowed, images. (the rotated version was the iBA-created PDF file, the full-screen was the original .jpg we pulled into iBA). Naturally, we were surprised. So we started mucking about, and found that drag/drop from ID worked, and looked OK.
As an update to my original post, it appears that the difference in quality was due to the fonts used. Once we opened the .PDFs within the .iba file, we converted the text to outlines, resaved the .pdfs, changed the unzipped folder back to an .iba file, and the font now looks great.
BTW, Is it me, or were you being snippy?

Hi, I have used PDF export for some years. One file will NOT convert to readable text in Word.  Some headers and maps in this document are converted OK but the body text is garbled. I have tried converting to Docx, Doc and RTF with no success. I disabled OCR and it made no difference. What can I do please?

  • How to set "Files of type" when using a "File Browse" item.

    Apex 4.0.2
    Internet Explorer 7 +
I have a "File Browse" item on a page and need to limit the types of files display to just "text (.txt)" files. How can this be done? Currently, the "Files of type" list shows "All File (*.*)", "Pictures (*.gif,*.png)", and HTML (*.htm,*.html)". In the best case, I would like to not have the "Files of type" list and have the user just limited to text files. However, adding Text files (*.txt)" to the "Files of type" list is ok.
    thanks,
    William

Thought i'd do a bit of research after seeing Scotts wonderful ideas.
So it turns out, IE made the file item read only from version 8, for security reasons. Read more: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ie/archive/2008/07/02/ie8-security-part-v-comprehensive-protection.aspx
    File Upload Control
Historically, the HTML File Upload Control (<input type=file>) has been the source of a significant number of information disclosure vulnerabilities. To resolve these issues, two changes were made to the behavior of the control.
To block attacks that rely on “stealing” keystrokes to surreptitiously trick the user into typing a local file path into the control, the File Path edit box is now read-only. The user must explicitly select a file for upload using the File Browse dialog.
Additionally, the “Include local directory path when uploading files” URLAction has been set to "Disable" for the Internet Zone. This change prevents leakage of potentially sensitive local file-system information to the Internet. For instance, rather than submitting the full path C:\users\ericlaw\documents\secret\image.png, Internet Explorer 8 will now submit only the filename image.png.To resetting the actual items, suggestions I found were to replace the actual item. So instead of using $s, I just replace the element, with the existing element, causing it to re-initialise.

On a slightly un-related note, I found out IE doesn't support the wonderful indexOf function on arrays, that checks for the existence of the value in an array. Sucks.

  • Can iWeb publish with JPEGS rather than PNG?

Is there any way to make iWeb use only jpegs rather than PNG files when publishing? Also, I think a picture quality slider would be helpfull for compression and site size management... thanks

You can minimize the chances of iWeb converting your jpgs into PNGs if you pay attention to the following things...
    1. Scale your jpgs to the resolution they are to be used...don't let iWeb do the scaling if possible (like dropping a photo in and then adjusting the size handles). Target your resolution and then drop the photo in and select "Use Original Size" in the Inspector Shape tab.
    2. Do not apply effects to your jpgs....if you do, iWeb will automatically convert to PNG and the file size will be even bigger! These effects include drop shadows, rotation, frames, opacity changes, etc.
    3. Be aware that in some templates, dropping a photo into iWeb automatically applies frames, drop shadows, and/or reflections. You can deselect these enhancements in the Inspector panel after dropping the photos in. If you don't, iWeb will convert to PNG.
    4. Do not use the "Use image as background" option. Better to drag an exactly sized jpg photo into iWeb and push it to the very back layer than to use this option.
You are right, iWeb or at least iPhoto needs to have some sort of user control over jpg compression. I use another app for this purpose called "Downsize". On the plus side, it also lets me apply shadows and frames to photos and saves the finished image with effects and all as a jpg.

  • Using PDF files in books

Does anyone know how I can use PDF files when creating Iphoto books? I am doing various photo books and want to add a few image/design pdf's to the book.

Here's how to get any file into iPhoto as a jpeg file:
1 - open the file in any application that will open it.
2 - type Command+P to start the print process.
3  - click on the PDF button and select "Save PDF to iPhoto".
NOTE:  If you don't have any of those options go to Toad's Cellar and download these two files:
Save PDF to iPhoto 200 DPI.workflow.zip
Save PDF to iPhoto 200 DPI.workflow.zip
Unzip the files and place in the HD/Library/PDF Services folder and reboot.
4 - select either of the files above (300 dip is used for photos to be included in a book that will be ordered).
5 - in the window that comes up enter an album name or select an existing album and hit the Continue button.
That will create a 200 or 300 dpi jpeg file of the item being printed and import it into iPhoto.

  • Is there any way to force iPhoto to present faces by folder for identification rather than randomly?  Would provide better context for identification especially if a huge number of images is involved.

    Before I commit the time and energy required to load and tag faces in 25,000 images within iPhoto, I need some questions answered;
Is there any way to force iPhoto to present faces by folder for tagging rather than randomly?  When so many images need tagging, over many years, the context of a folder helps with the identification. The work around is to load the images into iPhoto one folder at a time and do the tagging then.
How do I get iPhoto to present the tagged faces by last name rather than first name? When so many faces will be identified, it is much easier to find people by surname, particularly when I share the library within the family. The work around is to enter names as last name and first name.  Being able to toggle the sort is much more desireable.
Is there a way to export a portion of the library including faces?  I want to pass on portions of this huge 125 GB library to my family members.
Since my family members will need an Apple computer to view the images and faces, they will likely have their own photo library.  So is there any way to combine two libraries and merge the faces?
About 2/3 of my images have been scanned, so the date of creation is the scanned date rather than the date the photo was taken.  Will this mess up any sequencing or the retrieval of faces?

If I want to carve off part of a library, I presume the way to do this is to make a copy of the library using PLM then go into iPhoto and delete what I don't want.  The result is the carved off portion.
You don't need Library Manager to delete the portion you don't want.
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
If I want to merge two libraries, PLM implies that it will do this but will the Faces be merged too?
    I believe so.

Hi - I have a file where I store my downloaded music. When I plug in my ipod and click on "add music" my file appears. Rather than drag one song at a time, how can I download the entire list at once? - steve

I am not doing it in ITunes, but i did down load the song from ITunes.  I loaded the song on to my Nano, but in my menu selections it doesn't show the song or the artist in any search format.  However, when i plug in my nano to my PC I see the Nano library on my PC drive listings and that song and artist are there.  I can click on the song and it will play in Windows media on my work PC.  I did notice that the format for most all the songs in my library on my Nano are MPEG - 4 audio Files.

  • Is there a way to sort pdf by date created rather than by date added?

In iBooks in Mavericks, is there a way to sort pdf by date created rather than by date added?

I noticed that the "Year" information and "Release Date" information are usually wrong.
For example, the song "The Twist" by Chubby Checker has 2007 for the year and 3/5/2007 as the release date. I understand that this is the release date of the greatest hits compilation album, but not the song.
Is there any way to change the dates so that I can sort by year? I would like 60s songs to appear with a 1960s year or release date.

  • How can I reduce the size of a pdf file for emailing?

I want to send a pdf file which is 8 mb, it has bounced in an email because it is too big, how can I reduce the size of the pdf file for emailing?

Sometimes a simple "Save As" will reduce the file size slightly, but probably not enough to pass the <8 mb threshold of your recipient, as you need.
You've probably seen it, try the next option in the Save As menu, "Reduced Size PDF," and make it compatible with the latest version possible, again considering the recipient. This suggestion assumes Acrobat X. You don't say which version you're using, but this tool was available at least going back to Version 8, but in a different place, you'll have to hunt.
If all that doesn't work, you could remove some images from the source document, which also will reduce the overall size.
    Best luck.

  • How can I convert a pdf file that's larger than 100MB to word

How can I convert a pdf file that's larger than 100MB to word?
I have just paid $20 to Adobe to get this facility but It won't work ,
as the pdf is larger than 100MB,
I actually believe that I have paid twice for adobe but I'll take this up with them,
    in the meantilme,
do you have any suggestions, I really need this material in word urgently,
    many thanks

If your files are this large, ExportPDF is the wrong tool for you. You need Adobe Acrobat, which runs locally and does not need to send your files to Adobe.

  • How do I add a PDF file for download to my iWeb page?

How do I add a PDF file for download to my iWeb page?
I have created one using Apples Pages program.
    Thanks!

    Hi-
You need to create a text link to the file...
On your page, type a word that you want to be the link... then select the word, and in the inspector pane, click the link tab (the arrow on the far right) and check "enable as hyperlink." Then choose "file" from the dropdown menu and a chooser box will open for you to locate the file on your hard drive.
Choose the file by clicking "open" once it's located. Then the next time you publish, the file will be uploaded and linked to!
Hope this helps... I think I got all the steps in there!

    Hi,
I heard some promote use of "Terminal Services(RDS)", rather than App-V application with SCCM 2012 even if you have SCCM licens. The reason you dont need to repackage\test the application on an client OS...
I don't agree and I have not Heard this Before, just that you use TS for some scenario.
Or is it more likely that "Terminal Services(RDS)", take over the applikation administration?
    /SaiTech

Surely this all depends on your environment. There's nothing wrong with creating RemoteApps to push to client devices. Maybe you have an environment where RDS is widely used.
Why not leverage both solutions and target App-V's at RDS servers and then create App-V based RemoteApps that users can run at home as part of a home working solution via RDWeb.
Creating apps via RDS will be an admin overhead yes but then so is creating App-V packages in SCCM.
I don't agree with the arguement re: 'you dont need to repackage\test the application on an client OS...' as
App-V allows you to run on multple O/S types.
To be honest both technologies have their pros and cons.

  • WHY WE GO FOR SESSION RATHER THAN LSMW ?

WHY WE GO FOR SESSION RATHER THAN LSMW  , AND I WANT TO KNWO THE DIFFERANCES BETWEEN THEM AND IN WICH CONDITIONS  SESSION AND LSMW ARE  MOST SUTED? THANKING U

    hi,
In BDC ,we can run session as per our need, you can run in foreground ,background or even you can run on periodic wise ,where as in LSMW
you cant run as your wish .
BDC (Batch Data Communication) is a technology used for data transfer. it is meant for transferring data thru SAP transactions itself. when u use BDC for data transfer, the sequence of steps is the same as when u use standard sap transaction screens for data upload. the only difference is that u can use different options for foreground/backgrou nd processing.
LSMW on the other hand is a tool that helps migrate data from a legacy system (non-sap system ) to SAP system. it offers u various options to use either batch input, direct input, BAPIs or idocs. it involves a series of some 17-18 steps to migrate data.
    BDC:
Batch Data Communication (BDC) is the process of transferring data from one SAP System to another SAP system or from a non-SAP system to SAP System.
    Features :
    BDC is an automatic procedure.
This method is used to transfer large amount of data that is available in electronic medium.
BDC can be used primarily when installing the SAP system and when transferring data from a legacy system (external system).
BDC uses normal transaction codes to transfer data.
    Types of BDC :
    CLASSICAL BATCH INPUT (Session Method)
    CALL TRANSACTION
    BATCH INPUT METHOD:
This method is also called as ‘CLASSICAL METHOD’.
    Features:
    Asynchronous processing.
    Synchronous Processing in database update.
Transfer data for more than one transaction.
Batch input processing log will be generated.
During processing, no transaction is started until the previous transaction has been written to the database.
    CALL TRANSACTION METHOD :
This is another method to transfer data from the legacy system.
    Features:
Synchronous processing. The system performs a database commit immediately before and after the CALL TRANSACTION USING statement.
Updating the database can be either synchronous or asynchronous. The program specifies the update type.
Transfer data for a single transaction.
Transfers data for a sequence of dialog screens.
No batch input processing log is generated.
    LSMW:
The LSM Workbench is an R/3-based tool that supports You when transferring data from non-SAP systems ("Legacy Systems") to R/3 once or periodically.
The tool supports conversion of data of the legacy system in a convenient way. The data can then be imported into the R/3 system via batch input, direct input, BAPIs or IDocs.
Furthermore, the LSM Workbench provides a recording function that allows to generate a "data migration object" in an entry or change transaction.
The main advantages of the LSM Workbench:
    • Part of R/3 and thus independent of individual platforms
    • A variety of technical possibilities of data conversion:
    • Data consistency due to standard import techniques:
    Batch input
    Direct input
    BAPIs (Business Application Programming Interfaces)
    IDocs (Intermediate Documents)
The import technique to be used in an individual case depends on the business object.
    • Generation of the conversion program on the basis of defined rules
    • Clear interactive process guide
    • Interface for data in spreadsheet format
Reward points if this helps you.
