Using personal hotspot

My iPad is Wi-Fi only. I tried tethering it to my iPhone 4S while driving, and it only stayed connected for a short time. Then the "iPhone" network stopped appearing in the "Available Networks". It seems to work OK when the iPhone and iPad are stationary, but when in motion (in a car driving), connecting to the iPhone personal hotspot is unavailable. Any ideas?

Hardware issues aside, I would Reset the iPhone before tethering. In my experience it can be hard to activate tethering a second time. But that may be my carriers implementation that causes my issues. I can connect mulitple time but ocassionally the iPhone needs to be reset.
To Reset any iOS device, from the Home screen double tap the Home button to view the multitasking bar at the bottom. Tap and hold an app till the icons wiggle with the minus button visible. Tap the button to close all apps then tap the Home button to get back to the Home page. Press and hold the Sleep button till you see the Slide to power off message and power it off. Once powered down completely press and hold the sleep button till the Apple icon appears.

I have iPhone 4, iPhone 5 and iPad 2. Since I use cellular data, sometimes I put one of my sims into iPhone 5 and use personal hotspot to serve as a router. The iPad 2 works perfectly but if I turn on the feature in iPhone 4, neither the iPhone 5 nor the iPad 2 can connect to the iPhone 4. It detects the iPhone 4 but doesn't connect to it. Is there anything I'm missing or is iPhone 4 personal hotspot is not programmed to connect to my other two devices using this feature.

Assuming you are using OSX, connect iphone ny usb then go to system preferences. Go to network pane and scroll down to "wheel" and from the drop down select service order. If you see the iphone then drag it to the top of the list then select apply.

The update may have caused a change in identification for the network. Also, you never answered if the network appears ready on the phone to share. You may have to reset the network, and forget the network on the iPod Touch and the computer before attempting to connect again.

Yes, that should work at least temporarily. Some printers are not constantly looking for WiFi networks, however, so you'll have to make sure the hotspot is setup and active every time you turn your printer on.

I'm having a problem using my ipad (wifi+3g software 6.1.3) as a hotspot because the personal hotspot tab is not available ..
NB: i contacted my network provider and confirmed it is active and i also having a personal hotspot on my iphone (same network provider)
What should i do ??

Hello. I have an iPhone3GS and an iPad (WiFi only). I recently updated my iPhone to use the new 4.3 software and see that it now has the "Personal Hotspot" option. I called AT&T and activated the functionality. However, it appears that I can only use the "Hotspot" via bluetooth or USB.
That's OK but I am trying to connect it to my Ipad. I cannot seem to figure out how to pair the iPhone to the iPad. In the Bluetooth screen, neither of them will show the other. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Facetime able to use personal hotspot as the wifi needed?

I have a Verizon iPhone 4. Although the personal hotspot works for providing wifi to my nearby iPad or a friends iPhone nearby, it does not appear that my phone, which generates wifi with it's hotspot recognizes it's own wifi and so is unable to use facetime. Facetime works fine using another wifi connection (home or hotel). Is my conclusion accurate? Is the self wifi generated by the personal hotspot not accesable by the phone generating it to enable facetime?

The problem is, for the 5 devices connected to the "personal hotspot" their internet connection is via wifi, so they meet the requirements for facetime. On your iPhone, the one creating the hotspot, our internet connection is via cellular data, which doesn't meet the requirements for facetime. Now, if you get your buddy to create a hotspot using his iPhone, you could use his connection and use face time as well.
Keep in mind that the reason for the wifi requirement is due to the volume of traffic that facetime transmits. You will be hard pressed to have enough bandwidth over a personal hotspot connection from an iPhone to sustain the traffic needed for facetime. I would expect that the carriers might soon press Apple to change the connection check to impose a certain bandwidth minimum before facetime can be used to prevent people from trying what you are describing, then having nothing but problems due to the limited connectivity speeds. Trying to "game the system" and having problems will cause plenty of people to complain when it doesn't work they way they want it to.
