Using promiscuous mode to collect UDP data

Is it possible to set a NIC in promiscuous mode and to pull all UDP data?
I have created a VI to listen to data coming across a specific UDP port, this work perfect for one device when I specify the NIC IP address.
My challenge is I have multiple devices with different IP addresses/networks, that I have to switch between. Every time I switch I need to reconfigure my NIC IP address to capture the data. I would like all data to pass through regardless of IP address. Does LabView support this?
Thanks

No, LabVIEW does not natively support a way to put a network interface into promiscuous mode and capture all traffic. You'll either need to use a packet sniffer like Wireshark to capture to a file, and then process it later, or use other libraries. A starting point might be http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/epd/p/id/2660

  • Infrastructure 2.2 using config mode to collect configs?

I am running Cisco Prime LMS 4.2 and Cisco Prime Infrastructure 2.2 in parallel.  I just exported the device list and credentials from LMS and imported them into Infrastructure.  LMS has syslog alerts set up to notify the boss when "Configured from console by ..." messages get logged.  These messages typically come out whenever someone exits config mode, whether any actual changes were made or not.
Basically, the boss got alerts from LMS for every device imported into Infrastructure, caused by something that Infrastructure itself did.  The only thing that I can see that Infrastructure did was collect the configs.  I haven't found that any changes were actually made.  So apparently Infrastructure uses config mode to collect the configs?  What in the world for?
    Thanks for any insight.

More information.  I have a few old devices that are still using telnet instead of ssh, and also have a packet capture appliance that captured all of this discovery traffic from PI.  I filtered out the trace from one of these telnet devices and found the following sequence among a bunch of different show commands:
      config t
      ip nbar ?
      ip nbar
      exit
In the particular case of this device, the responses to the ip nbar config commands indicated that the device is not capable of doing nbar.  Your mileage may vary.

    Hi.
    1. You can use command line for collect support data.
    /opt/SUNWsefms/bin/supportData -d <array_name> -p /tmp -o supportdata
    Result : /tmp/supportdata.zip
    2. For trubleshuting current problem, please show result of:
    cd /var/opt/SUNWsefms/store/Reports
    for i in report* cache*
    do
    echo $i
    perl -ane '/[^[:ascii:]]/ and print;' <  $i

  • Using DEBUG Mode in Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler to Log SQL

    Hello,
I am looking for the possibilty to enable the logging of SQL in Data Modeler.
Jeff Smith wrote an article how to do this for SQL Developer, for Data Modeler there are other configuration files. Does anyone have an idea?
    Best regards,
    Joop

    Hello Philip,
the URL to the article of Jeff is: http://www.thatjeffsmith.com/archive/2012/10/using-debug-mode-in-oracle-sql-developer-to-log-sql/
in the install directory of Data Modeler 3.3.0.734 exists a file datamodeler\datamodeler\bin\datamodeler.conf. This analogue the situation for sql Developer.
However in this file there is no reference to a (non)debug file.
In ide/bin directory there is a ide-logging-debug.conf and ide-logging.conf file. But they are not referenced. Should one of them be included?

Yes you can ofourse but dont be in idea that logging will be mininal. Loggign will be as per recovery model full. Every thing will be logged. If you are going to use bulk insert task you can consider switching recovery model to Bulk logged but you will not
have option to do point in time recovery.
PS: please dont create duplicate threads
If you read first Note section in below link it clearly states that yes logging will be full and you can use

  • How to best use IDSM in promiscuous mode?

    Hi folks
I need some input and ideas how to best set up my IDSM2 module.
Today I have the module set up to capture traffic from the 6513 using SPAN in both directions and two different firewalled VLANs as sources. The destination is data-port 1 on the IDSM. This setup is working fine but I'm curious as how to best use the second data-port. Our 6513 runs IOS 12.2(18)SXF3 and has a limit of only one SPAN session set up to capture an entire VLAN in both directions.
My idea was to use the second data-port as SPAN destination for our external/non-firewalled VLAN, but this isn't allowed.
Does anyone have or had a similar problem? Would using a VLAN access list with data-port 2 as destination be an option or are the dual IDSM interfaces mainly used for inline mode?
    Regards
    Fredrik Hofgren

    Fredrik,
I am using VACLs in the switch that has the IDSM. This will preserve your SPAN sessions.
You can specify which vlans go to which port on the IDSM.
We actually have our external vlan set up as an inline vlan pair on data port 2.

  • Router NME IPS - use promiscuous and inline mode simultaneous

    Hi all,
we are using the IPS module NME-IPS-K9 on a Cisco 2951 router. We like to use the IPS in promiscuous and inline mode simultaneous. For example traffic from a client to a server should pass through the IPS. But the IPS should only recieve a copy of the VoIP traffic.
In the interface configuration mode the following command is set.
         ids-service-module monitoring promiscuous access-list 101
If I try to set a interface to inline mode I get the following message:
         "Only either Inline or Promiscuous
monitoring is supported on the router at one time.
Please remove Promiscuous monitoring on all interfaces
before configuring Inline monitoring. Only either Inline or Promiscuous
monitoring is supported on the router at one time.
Please remove Promiscuous monitoring on all interfaces
         before configuring Inline monitoring."
Is there any way to use promiscuous and inline monitoring at the same time? Is there a firmware update available which includes this feature? Any other idears?
IOS version of the router: 15.0(1)M4
    IPS version:  7.0(2)E4
    Kind Regards

In promiscuous mode your sensor doesn't affect the traffic but it only listen and analyze it.
In inline mode you direct all your traffic on this network segment you want to protect to IPS and it analyze it and block some actions according to your settings.
It is the main difference. Which mode to prefer must be your decision.

  • Build daily Big flat file using SAP R/3 material master data

    Hi all,
I must build an interface between SAP R/3 4.7 and an external application
Daily a flat file must be generated contaning Material data in full exchange mode
    (volume 100 000 materials, <10 fields => ~ File of 30Mo)
No complex mapping, only format mapping (Ex : Price quantity...)
I don't know yet if I will use Idocs or BAPI to extract data. However, I'm sure I must use multiple inbound messages because of volume
After reading documentation, I consider the both following solutions to manage it :
    1) A simple asynchronous interface with a file adapter in construction mode APPEND to build flat file progressively with arrival of SAP messages
    =>
    viable solution ?
Is there problem of concurrent access to file in such a solution  ?
(idocs or bapi data will be processed ones following the others )
    2) BPM Collecting and Bundling Messages - One Interface
(Unlimited Loop with Deadline trigger correspondint to time I must build flat file)
    =>
Each SAP message is a small message but the outbound XML will represent a 30 Mo flat file => Is it a problem ??
Which solution do you advise ?
    Is there another ?
Last question : (more general one)
In such scenario, I can't see XI-value added comparing a creation of flat file directly with R/3.
I will generate a big number of idocs, use a big part of XI memory ...
Can you give me your opinion about it ?
    Thanks a lot
    Best regards

    Hi Jean-Charles,
    >>>volume 100 000 materials, <10 fields => ~ File of 30Mo
    You have a performance task...
    >>>Is there problem of concurrent access to file in such a solution ?
No, the adapter framework has its own queueing, the message would be stored and executed later. If sequence is important, you can use EOIO as well.
    >>>BPM Collecting and Bundling Messages - One Interface
BPM is not required in your case, you should avoid becoz of performance task. You can append at file adapter, no problem. Bundling and splitting is even possible at Integration Server without BPM.
    >>>Each SAP message is a small message but the outbound XML will represent a 30 Mo flat file => Is it a problem ??
    Avoid using BAD words

  • Configuring IDSM in promiscuous mode?

    Hello,
I have two switch catalyst 6500 in VSS each with a IDSM module, I want monitor four VLANs three of them are vlans of users and one of servers, I am planning use VACLs to capture the traffic.
My first quetion is how to configure the data ports of IDSM in promiscuous mode, if in the configuration guide say that by default the data ports are in promiscuous mode, so that means that I don't have to make any configuration in the data ports of IDSM?
Second, if I have two switches 6500 in vss each with a IDSM module, I have to consider other configurations for this situation?
The configuration of VACL that I will put is:
    ip access-list extended ACL_IPS
      permit ip any any
    vlan access-map VACL_IPS 10
      match ip address ACL_IPS
      action forward
    vlan filter VACL_IPS vlan-list 30 , 40 , 50 , 100
    intrusion-detection switch 1 module 4 data-port 1 capture allowed-vlan 30,40,50,100
    intrusion-detection switch 1 module 4 data-port 1 capture
    intrusion-detection switch 1 module 4 data-port 1 autostate include
    intrusion-detection switch 2 module 4 data-port 1 capture allowed-vlan 30,40,50,100
    intrusion-detection switch 2 module 4 data-port 1 capture
    intrusion-detection switch 2 module 4 data-port 1 autostate include
    Thanks for the help.

The IDSM doesn;t need any special commands to inspect traffic in Promiscious mode.
You'll want to put your IDSM management interfaces on a VLAN to talk with them:
    intrusion-detection module 4 management-port access-vlan 99
    Use the "forward capture" switch:
    vlan access-map VACL_IPS 10
      match ip address ACL_IPS
      action forward capture
Get rid of the spaces between your VLAN numbers
    vlan filter VACL_IPS vlan-list 30,40,50,100
If you put two IDSMs in teh same chassis you'll need to decide how to split traffic between them. You can assign different VLANs to each IDSM.

  • Macbook pro (june 2010) airport promiscuous mode

    Hi all,
For my network security course, I have to sniff a wireless network.
Is it possible to put the airport extreme in promiscuous mode? When I use wireshark and select the "capture packets in promiscuous mode" I can only see my own traffic...Although when I check my "en1" status in ifconfig, I see that the "promisc" flag is set..strange
I've put the wpa/psk password in wireshark so that's not the problem.
So my final question is, does the promiscuous mode on airport extreme work on a 2010 macbook pro?

Of course it's my network and devices. And I'm interested in email accounts. As a parent . . . . well ya gotta be diligent.
Look at the devices - how are they accessing the email?
If it is via webmail in the browser (or a 'browser based' app) look for account setting to only use https. Some providers will only allow login via https which is secure, http is not secure, these can usually be 'forced' with account settings.
When logged in does the website remain on https, if it goes to http instead the email content could be visible on that network. Bookmark the https url for the child, and remove any http urls for the same site so they are less likely to use http by accident. Explain to the kids why the 'green lock' in the address bar (indicates https) is important for reading email or any other 'private' data.
Do the same with search engines (so their searches may be 'invisible' to the local network).
If they are using an email client like Apple Mail check the settings again for each mail server, there are options to only use the specific server, and only use secure protocols (SSL,TLS…). That should prevent the mail being sent in plain text across the network, however email is inherently insecure as a service (it bounces from mail server to mail server with to & from addresses visible) so the kids may be better off using iMessage or another chat service that has some level of encryption / privacy.
You can try viewing the network traffic to find passwords for these services, but it is very involved…
Monitor in promiscous mode on the same wifi channel as the network.
Decrypt the wifi traffic (you need the network key for this since wifi itself is encrypted (WEP, WPA, WPA2 etc)
Look for the email traffic & recombine the packets to follow the conversation, but you still cannot read https traffic.
All you will be able to find is passwords or form values for websites that do not use https.
There are other things they should be careful with - like avoiding unknown/ open/ free wifi networks. Even cellular towers can be malicious nowadays, so disabling cellular data could help them be a little more secure. They should also avoid accepting certificates or 'profiles' to connect to any network.
I'm not sure that watching packets in the air will get you better results any quicker that learning how to secure the settings on each device, pass on the info to the kids & eventually they will start to get it
    P.S
You may be able to lock settings via parental controls. iOS has 'restrictions' within the Settings app. Just use them carefully otherwise they will nag you about being unable to take a photo or use maps etc!

  • Configuring IDSM-2 Promiscuous Mode with MLS IP IDS

I am having a problem configuring promiscuous mode with an IDSM-2 running 5.0(3)S181.0 in a 6509 with Sup 720 running IOS 12.2(18)SXD4. I am running router interfaces without VLANs so I have created an extended access list with a 'permit ip any any' and configured this on my interfaces with 'mls ip ids access-list-name'. I configured 'intrusion-detection module x data-port 1 capture' and 'intrusion-detection module x data-port 2 capture', and because of the caution note on page 14-12 of 78-16127-01 I also configured 'intrusion-detection module x data-port 1 capture allowed-vlan 1-4094' and 'intrusion-detection module x data-port 2 capture allowed-vlan 1-4094'. After that I can see the output counters rising in 'show 'intrusion-detection module x data-port 1 traffic' and 'show 'intrusion-detection module x data-port 2 traffic'. I can configure the IDSM-2 using the VMS management center, and I added my sensor to security monitor and set the level down to informational, but I don't even see any events or even the start-up informational message. Anyone have any idea what I missed?

This error shows up when it cannot find any organizations.
Use the sqls below to identify this
    1. select MSC_CL_PULL.get_org_str(&instance_id) from dual ;
    2. select instance_code, instance_id from msc.msc_apps_instances where instance_code='&instance_code'
    3. select * from apps.msc_instance_orgs where sr_instance_id= &instanc_id
sql 1 should in principle return the orgs available. If this returns null or -9999, then it's an orgs problem
sql 3 will show the available orgs.
If the organizations are enabled for planning in the ASCP instances form, then run a targeted refresh for trading partners (suppliers/customers/orgs). If this works with no errors, then look at the table msc_trading_partners. It should contain records for the orgs with partner_type = 3

    IS THE SITUATION HOPELESS
I used Target mode to transfer files to a new i7  iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 from an older Dual core Intel machine (EMC 2105) also on 10.6.8. but originally Tiger 10.4. The operation was successful and I ejected the disk icon from the new machine and powered down the old machine. When this was restarted the next day there was a grey screen with flashing Mac symbol alternating with a 'no entry' sign and occasionally a question mark.Keyboard and mouse were unusable so k inserted the original instal disc (No.1 for 10.4. with installer 1.0.4) which came with the machine in 2006 in an attempt to boot from this. The ensuing window said this was not possible and now it cannot be ejected.I have tried everything ! It offers Disk Utility and other options like Terminal but that doesn't work either.I 'repaired disk' and that was pronounced o.k. None of the various keystrokes at start up will work, and the computer will only offer the installer disc continually. The only option would seem to be is to erase the hard drive completely from the disc in the machine.I don't want to do this as there is still material which I need to recover. I think the drive has in some way been corrupted by using it in target mode, and I don't know if there are any other options to try.
Please tell me how to get this disc to eject !

Have you seen this type of problem before? I think it could be a serious issue for anyone in a similar position.
No; but then, I've not had occasion to use TDM. I've been using firerwire drives for over 10 years, both FW400 and FW800, with no issues except a bit of instability using a B&W G3 machine.
TDM should be safe. Using cautious, manual copying of files from the Target machine to the Host machine should not result in unexpected loss of files or damage to the Target drive's directories. It should behave exactly the same as if it were an external (to the Host) firewire drive.
    •  I don't suppose there is anything I can do to 'put back' lost items from a separate Time Machine drive which has an up to date backup on it.
There is probably a way to do that - seems to me that's one of the reasons for a Time Machine volume.
On the other hand, if the Time Machine volume is rigidly linked to the now-absent OS on the original drive, there may be no way to effectively access the files in the TM archive.
I know that using a cloned drive would work well in this instance.
I have no experience with Time Machine, so perhaps someone who has will chime in with suggestions.
With the machine in TDM with the other machine, have you tried running Disk Utility to see if you can effect repairs to the drive?
