Not natively. If they have an app and it's enabled for airplay you could use an IOS device to beam content.

Apparently there is a way of doing it using the WD live book (which i know is not technoically cloud but that is what WD refer to it as). As you have said it can stream from iTunes, but if you store your movie file on your network drive and point iTunes at it, it will work. Apparently its easy, file / add file to library - then navigate to the folder location via the file path.
I'll be trying this as soon as a test unit gets here and I'll update you.

If you use EyeTV and AppleTV on a PowerPC, READ THIS!

I previously posted a thread about a weird failure with AppleTV disappearing from the Devices list after installing QuickTime 7.1.6, but it turns out that the problem is more complex.
I have a 1Ghz G4 iMac running 10.4.9, an Elgato EyeTV 250 connected on USB, and a new AppleTV on wireless. After installing the 7.1.6 QT update, the AppleTV disappeared from the Devices list in iTunes, and in addition, the new AppleTV-compatible version of EyeTV's software (2.40) started freezing and working like trash.
It turns out that the problem is a bad interaction on PowerPC Macs between EyeTV 2.40 and QT 7.1.6. It is not a failure of iTunes or the AppleTV.
Yesterday, Elgato sent me a link to a new build of 2.40 they came up with after receiving reports of this problem. They indicated they had only received problem reports from owners of PPC-based Macs (my fiancee's MacBook works fine with it all) and they patched the code.

Be advised that this is a beta patch, download ONLY if you experience freezing with EyeTV after installing 7.1.6 and if you experience the disappearing-AppleTV problem in iTunes. It contains no new features. I expect that this is a temporary link, but if you're having the problem now, go get the patched code. It fixed everything quite immediately for me.

Interesting. Thanks. I've been freakin' out over ATV disappearing from iTunes without warning. I assumed it was a problem with Bonjour since I have another program (Teleport) that relies on the Bonjour network and seems to suffer the same as ATV. Using Bonjour Browser I see that the ATV's are missing from the device list when they stop showing up. iTunes is there but the ATV's are not.
I'll try the patch and report back. I'm running a PPC G5 Dual with EyeTV 2.4 and two ATV's with iTunes and QT 7.1.6. The bizzare thing is if I shut my computer off at night (and ATV is missing from iTunes), when I turn it on in the morning, ATV is right there in iTunes and both units show up on Bonjour Browser. Doing a cold reboot or restarting EVERYTHING including the G5, ATV's, Airport Base Station, router, cable modem, etc., during the day doesn't help. I have to shut down the G5 and wait overnight. Then everything is back. That has me totally baffled!!!

Using the new AppleTV, I cannot seem to find the same TV shows on the iTune Store as the older AppleTV. The selection is far more limited. For example, Modern Family is not available ... Any reason why?

I recently upgraded from an older AppleTV to the new AppleTV. The TV Shows I can access through the new AppleTV are far fewer than before. For example, I cannot find Modern Family on the iTune Store, whereas I used to be able to find it on my older AppleTV. Any reason why the selection is more limited?

I just found out the answer to my own post by browsing through other discussions. Looks like the new AppleTV only provides access to rental TV shows. Can't purchase anything ... So, the selection is far more limited. It's a drag, but at least the mystery is solved...

AppleTV 1 works differently.
It has a sync/share mode and sharing (streaming only) modes set up by pairing the unit with iTunes on computers using the Settings>Computers menu.
The first sync and share connection is for one itunes library and allows you to sync compatible media to the unit's hard drive as well as stream the rest seamlessly if itunes is runniung and the drive has filled up - this media is accessed under My Music, My Movies etc.
Sharing libraries stream only and are accessed via My Shared Movies, Music etc.
Yes, Handbrake is a video converter that has AppleTV presets - use AppleTV1 preset or a simple universal Apple preset.

Using iTunes as AppleTV Server

Hi,
I am currently using iTunes as the media server for the Apple TV, however the problem with this approach is that I am rapidly running out of space on my macbook, which has a 512GB SSD.
At the moment, I have iTunes setup to "organise files" which is great for music. I believe if I switch this feature off, I am able to create "shortcuts" instead - and therefore I am able to leave the files on the time capsule and only use iTunes to "serve" them to the apple TV.
However, I can't find a way to mix and match between shortcuts and organised files within the same library. Some people have suggested holding down the option key when dragging stuff into iTunes, but I am not having much luck. Is this possible?

thanks for clearing that up. now when I press the alt key the location of the file in the iTunes library is like /Volumes/Data-1/Movies/moviename.mp4 (the time capsule) and they play nicely on the AppleTV by browsing the library or airplaying it over. But my music remains in the iTunes folder as before ( a good thing ).

I had an apple airport and was able to play pandora through it just using my iphone 4s and stereo system (an old boombox that takes a regular 3.5 mm plug). I got rid of my Airport and got an AppleTV under the impression I could use the airplay function in the same way I used the Airport. I was wrong. Is there anyway to use the airplay function using the AppleTV without a TV? I have the proper optical cables and converter to adapt it to my boombox, I know this because I can hear apple tv requesting me to use the voice command over my boombox speakers. I currently do not have a TV. I plan on buying one in the next 6 months. Please help.

I can confirm that Airplay with Apple TV3 does NOT mute the audio even when the HDMI out isn't connected to a TV. As I said, however, you need a TV to do the initial setup. After that, you can disconnect from the TV and connect (or leave connected) the optical out to the receiver.
vazandrew is not completely off base, however. Some time ago, there was a version of ATV firmware that had a bug which caused that problem. I think the version was 4.22. AFAIK, ATV3 firmware is now up to 7.x.
If you still run into a problem, you may need to factory reset your ATV3 (including firmware update), then rerun the initial setup with TV attached.

Using Multiple Speakers AppleTV has slight lag or delay to audio

Hello all!
I recently purchased an Apple TV and have updated it to the latest versions as is all my software on my mac. For the last year I have used AirPort Express for streaming to my receiver across the room using a standard 1/8" to RCA stereo connection. When played on my computer at the same time it creates a nice room filling sound.
However, I tried using the Apple TV as the remote speaker instead of the AirPort Express since I have it hooked up with the optical cable instead for movies and what not obviously. However, there is a very slight delay when using the AppleTV as a remote speaker giving a slight reverb effect to the music playback.
I am going to test a regular analog audio out from the AppleTV later tonight in case it my be a signal processing issue with my receiver (Yamaha HTR-5500). However if anyone has any ideas in the interim, they would be appreciated. Thank you so much in advance!

Both the Airport Express and the AppleTV go to the same receiver and therefore go to the same 5.1 speaker set up. It is either the Computer & AirPort Express or Computer & AppleTV going at the same time. I don't use all 3 out at the same time since that would be pointless.
Here is the basic hardware/network setup:
- Ethernet connection from wall goes into AirPort Express for network dedicated for my upstairs man cave
- Wireless connection feeds my iMac which in turn feeds the audio signal for AirTunes back to the AirPort Express
- The Audio from the AirPort express goes directly into my receiver.
- The AppleTV is wirelessly connected to the network as well.
I am aware of the mini-tos link on the AirPort Express but the way I have it set up it is also is the wireless router for my office and therefore is plugged directly into to the wall and the extra adapter is just a bit too much weight on it so i stuck with the basic stereo out since I only use it for music and anything in ProLogic cam be through a regular stereo signal if need be.
But yeah, I am going to try the analog out on the AppleTV tonight and whatever my results are I will post them here. Thanks so much!

On the current AppleTV, can you stream the TV shows you own without your using your computer?
Can you own an AppleTV and access all your purchases if you no longer own any computer?

It can't be purchased from the TV. If you have another device you can purchase it on, you can stream it to the Apple TV using AirPlay. Alternatively if you subscribe to iTunes match (computer/iTunes required, even though it may not be connected to the Apple TV) you can stream your entire iTunes music library without your computer being connected.
So if I buy a movie on the new AppleTV, can I not watch it whenever I like?
You can only buy movies on the Apple TV in the US, if you are in the US, you can redownload your purchases whenever you want.

I wouldn't say the iPad/iPhone was entirely computer free just yet, the Apple TV can function without a computer, but like the iPhone/iPad it needs the computer for some things, just more things than the iPad/iPhone does.

Slow Wifi when using Slingbox/how to check?

Well after reading a few of the posts here I think the Airport Extreme's update maybe the issue. I use a Slingbox with my Macbook and have had excellent Wifi speeds anywhere in my house. I would run upwards of 4000k+ and the HD feed looked great. Now I am stuck at 900 +/- kb and the feed from my Slingbox is grainy and slow.
I have double checked every hardware connection, rebooted the Airport, checked all settings and nothing seems to speed it up. Bottom line... is there a way to roll back the firmware or how would I check to see if the Airport is using the "n" networking for my Wifi signal.

Yes tried resetting the wifi connection and problem still persist.
Here it is...to make it clear. Connected thru the same wifi at home...
-> emails (yahoo/gmail) and facebook WEBSITES are working fine and fast when using/accessing thru a browser (chrome/samsung browser) - no problem with this.
-> emails (yahoo/gmail) and facebook APP is soooooo sloooww (thru the App). Slow I mean comparing it to using their browser/websites... news feeds/emails refreshing so quickly but not when using the APP installed in Samsung Galaxy Note 4. Slow like - It will take around 5-10minutes just to get your emails and news feed refreshed.
THIS HAPPENS ONLY WHEN CONNECTED THRU A WIFI which has a speed of 10-20mb. It is not happening when connected to the network data/plan.
My wife has the same Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (coming from different provider at&t) - same setup (emails, fb app), same wifi connection, but she's not experiencing anything like it.
Not sure why, I dont want to believe that while connected to a WIFI, Verizon is restricting anything and ******* me off to make me switch to my data plan connection everytime - which is Unfair!
Was there a known issue similar about this case?
