Using "Top" keyword in Microsoft SQL Server Gateway?
I want to query the top 5 records in sqlserver. Such as select top 5 * from table1
But, oracle doesn't support "top"keyword and
Gateway doesn't support rowid. Is there a solution?
Thanks
There is indeed no direct gateway support for this SQL Server specific 'top' function. However with the use of the DBMS_HS_PASSTHROUGH it should be possible to use the top-function. The DBMS_HS_PASSTHROUGH package allows you to move a SQL-statement 'as-is' to the remote non-Oracle database.
Have a look at an example of the DBMS_HS_PASSTHROUGH usage (with a resultset) at the MetaLink document with DocID: 412491.1

How to build a report in web Intelligence using Store procedure under Microsoft SQL Server 2000
Post Author: ltkin
CA Forum: WebIntelligence Reporting
Hi,
How to build a report in web Intelligence using Store procedure under Microsoft SQL Server 2000 ?
Regards,Hi ltkin,
Unfortunately, it is not possible in Xir2 to create Webi reports from stored procedures.
Webi reports can only be created from Universe. So in Business Objects XIR3 we can create a special universe that enables Web Intelligence user's to access stored procedures residing in the database. This is the only way that Web Intelligence user's can access stored procedures.
Please let me know if the above information helps.

Hi,
I was having the same problem and to solve it u have to point your classpath to
mssqlserver4v65.jar in the lib directory of your wl installation, in my case i
did:
set classpath=%classpath%;%WL_HOME%\lib\mssqlserver4v65.jar
I hope it helps.

Hi,
I have a windows 2008 R2 Enterprise servers with standalone MS-SQL 2008 R2 named instance. The server is having two networks, once production and the second for backup. The server FQDN is resolving to the production IP. The backup NIC
DNS dynamic update is disabled and an "A" record is registered with the dns. While trying to connect to the instance using the management studio:
Successfuly able to connect using the instance name, the production hostname, production IP and backup IP.
but while trying to connect to the insance using the backup hostname getting the below error:
"Login failed. The login is an untrusted domain and cannot be used with windows authentication. (Microsoft SQL server, Error: 18452) "
This is required for the backup tool to get connected using the backup FQDN of the server.
Should I need to create a host name alias, request you to kindly assist me with the best recommedation to fix this.
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/dbrowne/archive/2012/05/21/how-to-add-a-hostname-alias-for-a-sql-server-instance.aspxHi,
It might be a kerberos issue. Check that there are valid SPN's registered using the setspn utility - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731241.aspx

SAP NetWeaver BI with Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Reporting Services using XMLA
I am currently implementing SAP BW and am trying to connect the Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Reporting Services product. I am able to connect to SAP BW but there is one problem when i click on Query Designer after adding a DataSet the screen just displays the dialog prompt saying '' NO CUBES WERE FOUND. VERIFY THAT YOU HAVE SELECTED A VALID CATALOG''.
The advanced information depicts the following:Hi Raunak T,
Just a very basic question from my end:
I believe that "Microsoft SQL server Report Builder" is the 3rd party which uses MDX as interface.
Have you set the property using OLE DB for OLAP in your queries?

Hi, Can I use Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio version 11.0 to write SQL queries for "SQL Server Compact 4.0 Local Database" ?
When I use Connect Object Explorer, the "Connect to Server" dialog box which pops up has only 4 selections in the Server Type Drop Down List. They are Database Engine, Analysis Services, Reporting Services & Integration Services. I have read
somewhere that there should be a compact database option. but I do not see it.
What I would like to do is use free form SQL Queries against the tables in "SQL Server Compact 4.0 Local Database" .
Once I have validated these queries, then I will use them in my Visual Studio 2012 C#, ASP.NET application. I created the Local Database using Visual Studio 2012 for use by my application.
Thank you for your help..
diana4Hello,
With SSMS 2005 we have had the Option to work with SQL CE database files, but not with higher Version of SSMS.
You can use the free SQL CE Toolbax instead; see
http://sqlcetoolbox.codeplex.com/

Windows Authentication using Microsoft SQL Server 2005 JDBC Driver
Hi,
I am using Microsoft SQL Server 2005 JDBC Driver to connect to SQL Server 2000 database, can anyone tell me the connection URL for windows authentication. SQL authentication is working fine.
DataDirect has drivers for windows authentication but I am not using it.
Regards
ArupYou can't do it with the Microsoft driver. There's a free driver called jTDS that may be able to (I don't know).
(edit) Looking at their FAQ it looks like it does:

Accessing Microsoft SQL Server Data by using Oracle Forms 9i
I am currently working on a Project with Oracle Forms 9i at front end and Microsoft
SQL server at back end. Could Any one please recommand me the STEPS to connect Oracle forms 9i application with SQL Server database.
Thanks in Advance...

[email protected]1). Is this functionality be added to Forms 10g or later products or it is obsoleted.
There are no plans to add OCA functionality.
2). Steps to connect Forms 9i natively by using Java Importer.
You will need to write some Java to connect to your source, perform the operations you want to do, and return that data to Forms. Doing this, though, means that you may lose the transaction management functionality that Forms provides for you.
I cannot tell you what Java to write. It depends on your source and what you want to achieve. As for how to use the Java Importer, this is in the Forms documentation and there are papers on the Forms page on OTN.
3). Any third party product that can conenct the both products natively.
I don't know of any.

Error Message from Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio
I have problem editing the views that I created. I never have this problem before and I don't know if
I have touched something on the pane that alters my viewing on Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio. For example, if I want to edit the top 200 rows of my view called dbo.sl_admission_reg9, it will give me this error:
Invalid prefix of suffix characters (MS Viual Database Tools).
Please help.
Thank you very much.
SallyAre you trying to edit the top 200 rows of a SQL Server 2012 database using the 2008 R2 SQL Server Management
Stud? If so you just need to upgrade SQL Server Management Studio to 2012 or edit the rows using a SQL query.

Oracle DB 10g r2 & Microsoft SQL Server 2008
Hello,
I have a need to load data from Oracle 10g r2 to SQL Server 2008 and vice versa. I am new to heterogeneous connectivity. How do I connect to SQL Server from Oracle and vice versa(connect Oracle from SQL Server).
The Oracle version : Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.5.0
The SQL Server Version : Microsoft SQL Server 2008Both databases are located on different machines. Oracle is hosted on Solaris UX and SQL Server 2008 is on Windows Server 2008.
Any documentation in this regard will help.
Please advise.
Thank you much for your time in reading this post.

Edited by: Rich V on Nov 13, 2011 9:02 PMWhen you want to connect from Oracle to a SQL server you need to use a gateway. Oracle offers 2 different kind of gateways. The gateway which is for free is based on a 3rd party ODBC. It is called Database Gateway for ODBC (DG4ODBC) and allows you to connect to any foreign database as long as the ODBC driver is compliant with the gateway requirements documented in the manual.
As it allows you to connect to any foreign database it only supports a few Oracle functions which is able to map to foreign database equivalents. All other functions are post processed.
The more powerful product is Database Gateway for MS SQL Server (DG4MSQL) which is designed for MS SQL Server connections. Thus it supports many more functions which it is directly mapping to SQL Server equivalents and it is also able to participate in distributed transactions and to call SQL Server stored procedures. This DG4MSQL gateway is not for free and requires a license.
I would suggest to check out My Oracle Support and look for this note:Master Note for Oracle Gateway Products [Document 1083703.1]
It contains a reference to many other notes describing the differences between DG4ODBC and DG4MSQL and it also contains links to common set up notes.
After looking at this note you'll notice that on Unix most 3rd party ODBC drivers are commercial drivers and you might need to purchase them as well. Sometimes the license costs for these drivers are more expensive then purchasing the DG4MSQL. Another option would be to install DG4ODBC on a Windows platform, for example on the SQL Server machine and you could then use the MS SQl Server ODBC driver which is for free and you then have a complete solution for free. -
Hello team,
I have a project that I need to do, what is the best approach for each step?
1- I have to create a table in Microsoft SQL Server.
2- I have to import data/ tables from Microsoft Excel or Access to Microsoft SQL Server. Should I use Microsoft Visual Studio to move data from Excel or Access?
3-I should populate the created table with the data from the exported data.
4-How should I add the second and third imported table to the first table? Should I use union query?
After I learn these, I will bring up the code to make sure what I do is right.
Thanks for all,
Guity
GGGGGNNNNNHello Naomi,
I have imported all the tables into SQL Server,
I created a table:
CREATE
TABLE dbo.Orders
Now I want to populate this table with the values from imported tables, will this code take care of this task?
INSERT INTO dbo.Orders(OrderId, OrderDate)
SELECT OrderId, OrderDate
FROM Sales.Orders
UNION
SELECT OrderId, OrderDate
FROM Sales.Orders1
Union
SELECT OrderId, OrderDate
FROM Sales.Orders2
If not, what is the code?
Please advise me.

Can I run microsoft sql server on my archlinux box?
One of our office programs is showing its age, and I am looking at upgrading. Unfortunately, they have changed their approach and it now requires a microsoft sql server. Is there a way to run that on my arch server, through vmware or something like that? I don't want to invest in a separate windows box just for this one program.
No, there isn't an open source alternative. I've looked.timm wrote:it now requires a microsoft sql server.
You may try using Sybase ASE; for long time (until 6.0), MS SQL Server was just Sybase with MS branding and even today differences are not so big (depending, of course, on specific application's needs). I have never tried such a setup, but connecting to MSSQL with Sybase client libraries works OK, maybe you'd have luck in opposite direction.
There is a document on migrating apps from MSSQL to ASE; I know this is not the case, but there are some valuable information about differences between those RDBMSs that may help you to decide whether there are chances to succeed or not.
