Using Vista Recovery USB on a different Laptop

I bought 2 identical HP dv7-1273cl Vista 64-bit notebooks 4 or so years ago and never created recovery disks. One of the laptop's disk is trashed; it's so bad it is not recognizing the disk. My question: Can I create a Recovery USB drive on the good notebook and then use it to recover the bad notebook? I have purchased a new disk. If no, could a suggestion be made.
Thanks
Steve

Hi,
As long as all the hardware and version of Vista ( ie home premium, professional etc ) are identical, the recovery media created on one of the machines should work on the other - one point to note is that the replacement HDD should be of the same capacity ( or slightly larger ) as the original drive; smaller can cause issues with the recovery process.

  • How can i use the same id on two different laptops?

When trying to use the same login on two different laptops so that i can connect my nook to either depending on which one is free, i get the error that the id is already in use on another computer?

The issue is embedded in the way the software works.  To comply with the
Digital Millenium Copyright Act of 2000, all software companies in this
business keep track of where their software is installed, making
information about the computer and ereaders part of an ID file.  So, your
user ID is embedded in the ID file of each computer, but each computer has
a different ID of its own that is also embedded in that file.  Adobe's
master server (yes, there is one that you connect to even if you didn't
know it) also has that information, and when you try to use an ID on one
that's embedded in the file of another, Adobe's server blows the whistle,
and as you can see, you can't do that....

  • I wanted to create two partitions on my iMac w/ Lion using a Recovery USB i created using Lion Recovery Disk Assistant but I keep getting Partition failed message saying "couldn't unmount disk"

I have this recently purchased iMac that comes with a Lion but I wanted to have two partitions on the hard disk. I know that the Recovery HD partition is on the same hard disk so I downloaded the Lion Recovery Disk Assistant and created a Recovery disk using a USB. I boot up the system using the USB Recovery disk and run Disk Utility to create 2 Partitions on the hard disk but I get a Failed partition message saying "couldn't unmount disk". What could be the problem here?

Yes, that's what I meant.  If that doesn't work, verify that you have a G.U.I.D. partition scheme (you probably do):

  • Can I use a recovery disc of a differnt serial number in my laptop?

I had a issue with the recovery disc which I got from HP, the first disc stops at 24% and further it does nothing. So I have ordered another recovery disc, when I ordered by mistake I have entered my product number correctly but entered serial number (wrong#) 2CXXXXXXRE instead of (correct #) 2CXXXXXXRF and booked the recovery disc. I dont have an option to cancel the order in the site. So can I use this recovery DVD to recover my laptop?

  • W700ds: Enable RAID using created recovery media

    Hello!
I own a ThinkPad W700ds, though I'd imagine that my question would be just as well answered if it were a W700... Please, any help would be great!
I purchased a 'used' W700ds with Windows Vista Business (COA and recovery partition intact, but no media supplied). The laptop was advertised with RAID0 but I was always dubious that it was set up correctly. I spent some time investigating it this afternoon and noticed that the BIOS was not configured correctly - It was set to AHCI rather than RAID.
    I did the following:
    1) Created Recovery Media using the facility in ThinkVantage software.
    2) Enabled RAID in the BIOS
    3) Entered the RAID configuration (Ctrl+I) during boot up. I configured the drives as RAID0.
    4) Reinstalled Windows Vista using the recovery media created in (1) above.
After completing the installation Windows Vista would did not manage to boot - Always BSOD'ing.
I repeated step 3 & 4 above, selecting RAID1 instead. Exactly the same issue.
I have since returned the BIOS setting to AHCI and reinstalled Windows Vista using the recovery media and I am back where I started (Windows installed but in a RAID array).
I have done some research and it would seem that in the RAID drivers are not included in the recovery media and this is the reason for the BSOD. I have included some of the numerous websites that I have read, both for your perusal and, in some way, to verify that I have really spent some time considering this issue before requesting help.
The recovery media that I have created is all that I have - Is there any 'self-contained' way for me to enable RAID? I'd prefer RAID1 (I would favour redundancy over speed) but would be happy with RAID0 if this is not possible. It seems a terrible shame that Lenovo (aware - and obviously not 'intended' as using alterative installation media is considered a 'work around') offer the opportunity of creating recovery media, which cannot be used to reinstall Windows using a valid configuration.
It seems that it is not possible to maintain RAID configuration through Lenovo R&R, which probably explains why the seller listing the ThinkPad as RAID but it did not come to me as such (the seller used the recovery partition to restore the laptop to factory state for me before completing our sale - makes sense!). Still, it seems a shame to have a laptop which offers RAID functionality and has the necessary hardware (RAID controller and two drives) and hitting a brick way over software restrictions. Can anybody give any advice how I may proceed to reinstall Windows with the drives in a RAID array, considering I've only the Lenovo recovery media?
Lenovo support are closed today due to the UK public holiday but I will try at the next opportunity - However, I fear my fate is in your hands already, as the ThinkPad is out of warranty.
    Thank you!!

Hi LavaChild, welcome to the forum,
here's a thread missing from your list where I describe how I have done this in the past using recovery discs created from the system.

That said I remember a rather long thread where one member had difficulties going this route, the solution turned out to be that for whatever reason their optical drive didn't want to play ball.  Unfortunately I haven't found it after a quick search.   I'll give it another shot tomorrow.
Edit;  found the thread, it was about creating a RAID1 on a W700ds, but the steps aren't really any different. Please note the solution.

  • Creating Recovery USB

I have tried a few times now to create a recovery usb for my new laptop, however it gets so far then i get the below error:  "we are experiencing errors in recovery media creation, please try again". like i said, i have tried a few times, but get the same error message, any ideas how to get past this!  The usb stick i am using is new. Thanks

You mean you are trying to "burn the recovery discs" (so to speak) to the USB drive, and to do this from within Kubuntu?
    Other options:
    1)  back up everything you have in Kubuntu onto an external drive, then use the recovery partition to reinstall Windows 7, then reinstall Kubuntu and copy your stuff back.  I have done something very similar a few times.  Windows 7 wants to use the whole drive (or partition), but I recommend a solid backup to be safe!  When you reinstall Kubuntu, you can adjust partition sizes.
    2) order factory recovery discs, then restore.  But, you will likely face the situation as above.  Be sure to have backups!
    3) possibly some 3rd alternative... use an external drive, use factory recovery to restore to external drive (if possible), then burn recovery discs to USB drive?  Not sure if this will work.  Be sure to back up first, in any case!
To avoid similar situations, I would recommend burning the recovery discs (to USB) as soon as you get it running again.  I was able to burn to a 16gb drive; it was something like 13GB.

  • IBM T60 - Vista recovery disk

    Hi,
My disk crashed and I want Vista recovery disk for IBM T60 laptop.  Where can I get it.

I am not positive, but I don't think Lenovo sells a pre-configured recovery disk for a T-60 with Vista.
I have a T-60P, and bought Vista when service pack one came out and installed it.  Here's what I did:
    - Downloading all the drivers and utilities for Vista from Lenovo in advance, unpacked them and saved them on a USB drive
    - Bought a new hard drive and Vista OEM version from Fry's
    - Installed Vista
    - Loaded the utilities
Vista runs extremely well on this computer - it was a great move.  Lenovo's drivers are excellent.

  • Windows 8 Recovery USB causes UEFI error: "Grub error: Can't find gpt 7" [FIXED]

    Hello everyone,
Here is my situation.  I had a dual boot setup on my toshiba S855D (Win 8/Ubuntu 12.10).  After a few months my win 8 install was giving me strange errors.  I decided to do a full reinstall using the recovery USB I made. (I had reinstalled once before)  When I plugged in my USB after restarting the computer (in USB as first boot), I got the error: 'Grub error. Can't find gpt 7' If I tuned off UEFI, the computer could at least detect the USB but not do a reinstall.  Thinking it was a Grub error I formatted the HD (using an ubuntu liveUSB).  The problem persisted. I installed boot-repair on ubuntu and tried that, but no effect.  I have tried to install an updated bios from the CD image in the bios zip, but it wouldn't execute the commands in the ini file.  I even tried to install an old xp disk I had to see if I could install the bios update that way, but the windows install  repeatedly froze.
Quick version: dual boot (win8/ubuntu)->try to reinstall win8, "error: Grub Error: Can't find gpt 7", when usb is attempted to be booted from. ->Wiped hdd, but problem persisted. -> tried many ways to fix, but nothing works.
I have been reading many forums for the past few days, and nothing looks to work.  Any and all help would be really helpful.
    Solved!

    I finally got it!
After much poking around the internet, I was finally able to identify my problem.  My bootx64.efi in the EFI/Boot folder wasn't working.  I found this out by putting UEFI shell on another usb and using that to test my *.uefi files.  Thankfully, I had a backup of my EFI folder from my initial Ubuntu install.  This had a backup made my ubuntu. (bkpbootx64.uefi) I ran the backup and the USB worked!
On another forum someone (Agent268) said this, which may help.  I'm guessing you need to have a windows pe DVD/USB to make this work though.
"You should be able to use DISM to manually reimage this bad boy using the WIM or SWMs on that USB recovery flash drive."
Hope my research helps someone out there.  Cheers to everyone who looked.

    View Solution.

    Hi:
You can probably downgrade your Vista notebook to XP, but you don't have a license (downgrade rights) to do that from Microsoft.
Normally, only business notebooks and desktops were given downgrade rights to XP due to the risk of companies operations grinding to a halt because of software incompatiblities with some programs and Vista.
Personally, it would be better anyway to move on up to Windows 7.
Since your notebook came with Vista, it can run Windows 7. For any missing drivers you may have you can normally use the Vista drivers on your notebook's support and driver page.
Additionally, you may want to read through this dv2000 upgrade guide for Windows 7.

  • How do I use my iphone 4S wifi on my laptop via USB cable

Hi with my HTC when I connected it to my laptop via USB cable a list of options came up on my phones screen and one of them was to tethering. But when I do the same with my iPhone no options come up on my screen, so how do I use my iPhones wifi on on my laptop useing a USB cable?
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
My laptop runs on windows vista and my iPhone 4s has the latest updates.

I want to use my home wifi signal to tether my iPhone to my laptop via USB ,as my laptops wifi card is broken. It worked ok with my old HTC desire as when I can extend it to my laptop it had a list os options of what you wanted to do and one of them was tethering, as I'm useing my home wifi I don't need to worry about my data usage. But thank you for responding.

  • I cannot print from my iPad using airport express. My printer is not AirPrint compatible but is connected to airport express thru USB port. My laptop can print with no problem thru the express unit. My lap top is no a mac.

Good day, my iPad does not seem to pick up my printer. My printer is not AirPrint compatible but is connected to my airport express thru the USB port. My laptop which is windows type connects to the printer via airport express thru bonjour and this work well. My iPad does not pick up my printer thru the airport express. I have read about different software that you can download but this seems to be only if you are using a mac. I know my express is working fine as I can use airplay thru my iPad. Any ideas? I do not want to go to the expense of changing my printer, when there was no mention in the express details that your printer had to be AirPrint compatible or indeed wireless.

2 iphone 4, 1 computer. i upgraded to ios 5 and just updated my wifes phone as well. her phone got wiped of all apps and all my contacts were put on her phone. we had been using the same apple id but different user acct on our laptop. How do i get her phone back to normal??

Have your wife log in to her user account on the laptop. Launch iTunes, then connect her phone to the computer with the USB cable. Sync. That should put back all apps and media. Since you already upgraded her to iOS 5 she'll have to manually enter all her settings and preferences, and organize her home screens.
