Utl_file read mode

Question

Is it possible to have my code that goes like this?
IF filename exists THEN
  input_file := utl_file.fopen (path,filename, 'R');
FOR all_recs IN filename LOOP
  utl_file.get_line (input_file, input_buffer);
  dbms_output.put_line(input_buffer);
END LOOP;
utl_file.fclose(input_file);
END IF;What should the actual syntax of my code be like?

- It seems odd that you would have PL/SQL code that is reading from one file only to write the data back to a different file. That's not something that you generally want database applications doing, so I'd be curious what the requirement was. If you are just trying to rename a file, there is an FRename procedure in UTL_FILE.
- If you do want to read from one file and write to another, it would make more sense to do that in a loop (i.e. have two file handles, read from handle1 and write to handle2 a line at a time in a loop).
- If you really, really wanted to, you could load the source data into a LOB and then write the LOB to a different file. But that's a rather odd thing for database code to be doing...
