Variable and procedure

hi,
I am sure we can call a datbase procedure in a ODI procedure and we can pass odi variables as input variables to that procedure.In the same way i think it is possible to retrive the value returned by a procedure to odi variable if any one aware of how to achieve this plz help me out.
Regards,
Sai.

thanks for the reply , but there is a problem with it,if we use that we need to create a package in the database which is not suitable in my case.
So, plz help me out if u have any idea of doing it with out creating a back end package.
Thanks,
Sai.

  • Diff char in variable and procedure call

    I understand the difference between Char en Varchar. What I don't understand is the different behaviour of Char when assigning a plain variable and when assigning a procedure call variable. I've created this sample code:
    declare
      v char;
      procedure t (i char) as
      begin
        if i = ' ' then
          dbms_output.put_line('ok');
        else
          dbms_output.put_line('else');
        end if;
      end;
    begin
      v := '';
      t('');
      t(' ');
      t(null);
      t(v);
    end;
    else
    ok
    else
    ok
    PL/SQL-procedure is geslaagd.The first (t('')) call and last (t(v)) call I think should result in the same answer, but apearantly, when v is assigned, a space is passed into the variable (sounds correct according to documentation), but when i is directly assigned, a null is assigned, rather than a space.
    Does anyone know what the explanation is for this behaviour?
    Thanx,
    Lennert
    ps, I'm not looking for a solution or a work around, I'm just interested in the background.
    pps, I'm running O8174 on HPUX

    x CHAR;
    It's default length is one but if you don't assign a value, it's value is null and its length is null. The empty string ('') is not null, so the assignment x := '' will assign a value of space, since PL/SQL pads with spaces to fill the length.
    PROCEDURE test is
    x char;
    BEGIN
    dbms_output.put_line('x = >' || x || '< , the length of x is: ' || to_char(length(x)));
    x := null;
    dbms_output.put_line('x = >' || x || '< , the length of x is: ' || to_char(length(x)));
    x := '';
    dbms_output.put_line('x = >' || x || '< , the length of x is: ' || to_char(length(x)));
    dbms_output.put_line(to_char(ascii(x)));
    x := ' ';
    dbms_output.put_line('x = >' || x || '< , the length of x is: ' || to_char(length(x)));
    END test;
    SQL> execute test.proc1
    x = >< , the length of x is:
    x = >< , the length of x is:
    x = > < , the length of x is: 1
    32
    x = > < , the length of x is: 1

  • Linking variable and procedure

    hi,
    how to assign a value to the odi variable which is returned by a sql statement which written in the source tab of odi procedure ?
    Regards,
    Sai.

    I've just done this.
    Im calling startscen.sh from ebiz via concurrant request, passing variables to the ODI procedure.
    Variables in this case are a mix of Alphanumeric and Int.
    reference variables in ODI Procedure using #variable_name.
    Drag variable to package, set to declare (dont use set!). Link to procedure. Cut scenario. Job done.
    We also have other variables with refresh SQL behind them (to get last ETL date for example) and simply use refresh variable on the package canvas, i've read good practice to declare them first in the package but from my testing this isnt strictly required.
    Hope this helps.

  • Oracle Form functions and procedures in APEX, how?

    I am working to recreate in APEX, already existing Read Only Forms in Oracle Forms. APEX Interactive Report functionality among other things, makes it worth while as well as targetting a different audience than the one that utilizies the Oracle Form versions. Oracle Forms versions use lots of pre and post query triggers, PLSQL Functions.
    In Oracle Forms one of the places those functions can be located is in the "Program Units" section of the Form. A typical function of this sort, based on a specific Mission ID Itinerary, collects scheduled passengers last names, formats them with a comma and space after each one, into a single string that is returned and displayed as the passenger list of one row.
    I have all this code written so I can move most of the main query of the Oracle Form into an Interactive Report. These functions and triggers called from within the Form, from the "Program Units" section of the Oracle Form rather than being stored in the Database schema in a package, where would they go inside APEX? Can I create a "Shortcut" in APEX and call it from the Interactive Report "Region Source"? Can I create the PLSQL function at the page level or region level of the Interactive Report? Or, is my best bet creating a package stored in the database, of all these functions and/or proecedures I may need from the original Oracle Form?
    Some advice would be greatly appriciated.

    RLBickham wrote:
    I don't think I have been clear enough in describing the specific thing I want to do, it simply does not reach the level of forms to APEX conversion. It is basically a PLSQL Function problem.
    I have an Interactive Report that is currently getting 90 percent of what I want however, each row, representing a Mission may have multiple legs. Each Leg has two locations or ICAO codes attached to it. Based on the Mission number, I want to loop through the leg table, collect all the ICAO codes for that Mission, put them all into 1 variable separated by a coma and add that variable to the column display of that Interactive Report as the last column.
    In Oracle Forms I have a function saved to the database that is called within the main query. Maybe I am asking a question that does not need to be asked but in any case my question is can I put that function currently in the database somewhere in the confines of the Interactive Report and reference it via Http somehow or should I just stick with putting functions and procedures in packages stored in the database and called the conventional way?You could move the function to the database and call it from the report query, but it sounds as if it's superfluous. In the report query use whatever form of Re: 4. How do I convert rows to columns? is appropriate to your (unspecified) database version.
    When you have a problem you'll get a faster, more effective response by including as much relevant information as possible upfront. This should include:
    <li>Full APEX version
    <li>Full DB/version/edition/host OS
    <li>Web server architecture (EPG, OHS or APEX listener/host OS)
    <li>Browser(s) and version(s) used
    <li>Theme
    <li>Template(s)
    <li>Region/item type(s) (making particular distinction as to whether a "report" is a standard report, an interactive report, or in fact an "updateable report" (i.e. a tabular form)
    With APEX we're also fortunate to have a great resource in apex.oracle.com where we can reproduce and share problems. Reproducing things there is the best way to troubleshoot most issues, especially those relating to layout and visual formatting. If you expect a detailed answer then it's appropriate for you to take on a significant part of the effort by getting as far as possible with an example of the problem on apex.oracle.com before asking for assistance with specific issues, which we can then see at first hand.

    I have a scenario where I have a date selection using a variable.

  • Calling Oracle function and Procedure using OCCI with in C++ code

    Could any body send me the sample code to create and execute Oracle function and Procedure using OCCI concept in C++?.
    Edited by: 788634 on Aug 16, 2010 4:09 AM

    Hi Vishnu,
    Yes, sure, you can create a PL/SQL procedure, function, package, package body, etc. from within an OCCI application. I would say that, generally, this is not the sort of activity a typical client application would perform unless there is some initialization/installation processes that need to happen. In any case, here is a simple demo showing how to create a stand alone procedure (in a real application I would use a package and body) that returns a ref cursor. The ref cursor is just a simple select of two columns in the hr.countries sample table. Of course, there is no error handling, object orientation, etc. in this demo - I wanted to keep the code as short and as simple as possible to illustrate the concept.

  • In built functions and procedures

    Hi,
    Would someone be able to tell me where i could find the in built functions and procedures within the OWB directories. I am trying to determine the methodology used to write custom procedures and functions within the OWB mapping.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    I have written a very simple function that returns the row count from a table called TIMEDIM but the mappings validates fine only that the ouput is blank.
    I have attached the code i used :
    v_total NUMBER (10);
    --initialize variables here
    -- main body
    BEGIN
    SELECT COUNT (*)
    INTO v_total
    FROM TIMEDIM ;
    -- allow compilation
    RETURN v_total;
    EXCEPTION
    WHEN OTHERS THEN
    NULL; -- enter any exception code here
    RETURN NULL;
    END;
    any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Whats the difference betweeen passing the table variable and table valued parameter?

    Hi Everbody
      Can someone one tell me what's the difference between passing a table variable and table valued parameter to a stored procedure or function? Can both be used to pass a table to a stored procedure/function?
    Regards
    Regards

    They are essentially the same. What we call a table variable is a local
    variable. A table-valued parameter is an incoming parameter to the
    procedure. The only difference is that the parameter is readonly.
    When you call a stored procedure, you can pass a table variable as the
    actual parameter. Or a table-valued parameter that you pass on.
    CREATE PROCEDURE nisse_sp @tvp sometype READONLY AS
    DECLARE @local someothertabletype
    EXEC pelle_sp @tvp, @local

  • Question about session variables and binding

    Hi All,
    I'm a newbie with Application Express. I've gone through several tutorials and a book, and now I'm actually getting started with apex. My first adventure is a tiny little form, where all you do is fill it out and it sends an email. Pretty simple.
    And, i have it working just fine - but I have a question about something I don't quite understand. Basically, I am generating the email text in a page process. And some of the form fields work fine if i reference them as *:ACCT_NAME*, but some give me the dreaded "not all variables bound" error. For the ones that give me the error, I can reference them like V('ACCT_NAME').
    So, as a newbie, I'm a little confused. When is it appropriate to use the V function, and when it is appropriate to use binding? Why would one of the fields work with binding but not another from the same form?
    Thanks for any clarification you can offer,
    Lisa

    Lisa,
    A bind variable is a place holder variable available in an environment.It is used quite frequently(outside Apex Context) in SQL and PLSQL scripts and especially in Dynamic SQL statements.Many times using a bind variable gives better performance. In the Apex environment,page items and many other variables related to the session are available as bind variables and hence their value can be referred in SQL,PLSQL contexts as :VARIABLE_NAME.
    Now V() function is an apex specific function which returns the value of an apex session variable outside the apex environment. So as Machaan pointed out, it is used in
    procedures and triggers that gets called from within an apex session. This is required since the bind variables themselves are not directly available in the SQL environment but their values from the corresponding session can be accessed by this apex built-in function.
    The length of any Bind variable name is limited to 30 characters, this is a limitation inherited from Oracle SQL itself and hence session variables(page or application items) whose name has a length which exceeds 30 characters cannot be used as the :ITEM_NAME format. In such cases you would have to use the v() method again. This might be happening in your case.

  • Doubts in Functions and Procedures

    Hi Everybody,
    Can anybody tell the exact differences between function and the Procedure?
    My doubts are
    1. if procedure can return, and not necessary that it has to return a value,(that means if we want to return and doesnt also we can write procedure) then why do we need function?
    2. I tried to call a function which updates one table in the code,, i got an error saying that the function should not use DML.
    3. I want to know the combination that
    a. can procedure call a function and viceversa?
    b. can function (which uses DML statements)be called from sql statement ?
    and if any other combinations are there let me know with reasons.
    Thanks in advance,
    Vinay

    To elaborate on the already correct answers...
    user12281717 wrote:
    Can anybody tell the exact differences between function and the Procedure?
    My doubts are
    1. if procedure can return, and not necessary that it has to return a value,(that means if we want to return and doesnt also we can write procedure) then why do we need function?Procedures and Functions are self contained blocks of executable code. When that code completes it has to "return" to whatever called it, so both Procedures and Functions do return, however a procedure has an implicit return when it reaches the end of the code (or you can specify the keyword RETURN without any value if you like), whereas a function must contain a RETURN keyword before reaching the END keyword and a value of the correct datatype must be returned by that RETURN keyword.
    Functions must return a value, whereas Procedures do not return any value.
    If values need to be passed back from a procedure then OUT or IN OUT parameters are used, however if values are to be passed back then often it is something that should be considered for being a function rather than a procedure.
    Functions may also contain OUT or IN OUT parameters, but these types of parameters limit the function to use within PL/SQL code only and prevent them from being used in SQL, as the SQL engine will have no variable to pass back the OUT value into. Generally it is considered bad practice to use OUT or IN OUT parameters in functions.
    The underlying internal differences of Functions and Procedures comes down to how values are passed in and returned via the internal stack or via memory references where the parameter is specified as an OUT / IN OUT with NOCOPY. If you're not familiar with writing machine code / assembly language or low level C code, then this concept will probably be alien to you and it will take more than a simple post to explain it.
    2. I tried to call a function which updates one table in the code,, i got an error saying that the function should not use DML.Functions can contain DML, but those functions can only be used from a PL/SQL call to it, not from within a call from an SQL DML itself. i.e. a DML cannot contain further DML.

  • What's the difference between global variables and instance variables?

    hi im just a biginner,
    but what is the difference between these two?
    both i declare them above the constructor right.
    and both can access by any method in the class but my teacher said
    global variables are not permitted in java....
    but i don't know what that means....and i got started to confuse these two types,,
    im confusing.......
    and why my teacher said declaring global variables is not permitted,,,,,,
    why.....

    instance variables are kindof like Global variables. I'm not surprised you are confused.
    The difference is not in how they are declared, but rather in how they are used.
    There are two different "styles" of programming
    - procedural programming.
    - object oriented programming.
    Global variables are a term from Procedural programming.
    In this style of programming, you have only one class, and one "main" procedure. You only create one instance of the class, and then "run" it.
    There is one thread of control, which goes through various methods/procedures to accomplish your task.
    In this style of programming instance variables ARE "global" variables. They are accessible to all methods. There is only one instance of the class, and thus only one instance of the variables.
    Global variables are "bad" BECAUSE you can change them in any method you like. Even from places that shouldn't have to. Also if you use the same name as a global variable and a local variable, you can cause great trouble. This can lead to very subtle bugs, as the procedures interact in ways you don't expect.
    The preferred method in procedural programming is to pass the values as parameters to the methods, and only refer to the parameters, and local variables. This means that you can track exactly what your method is doing, and what it affects. It makes it simpler to understand. If you use global variables in your methods, it becomes harder to understand.
    So when are instance variables not global variables?
    When you are actually using the class as an Object, rather than just a program to run. If you are creating multiple instances of an object, all with different values for their instance variables, then they are not global variables. For instance you declare a Person object with an attribute "firstname". Your "main" program then creates many instances of the Person object, each with their own "firstname"
    I guess at the end of all this, it comes down to definitions.
    Certainly you can write procedural code in java. You can treat your instance variables, for all intents and purposes like global variables.
    I can only think to show a sort of example
    public class Test1
       User[] users;
       public void printUsers(){
         // loop through and print all the users
         // uses a global variable

    public void printUsers(User[] users){
    // preferred method - pass it the info it needs to do the job
    for(int i=0; i<users.length; i++){

    public Test1(){
    User u1 = new User("Tom", 20);

    printUsers(users);

    new Test1();
    class User{
    String firstName;
    int age;
    public User(String name, int age){
    this.firstName = name;
    this.age = age;
    public void printUser(){
    // here they are used as instance variables and not global variables
    System.out.println(firstName + " Age: " + age);
    Shit thats a lot of typing, and I'm not even sure I've explained it any good.
    Hope you can make some sense out of this drivel.
    Cheers,

    To make things clear, here are two small examples that show how nasty locals and value properties can be to the naive programmer.
    - Open the diagram of the race condition.vi before running it and try to predict what will be the values of the two counters after the third run.
    - Use the Compare Locals Properties and Wires.vi to find out how slow locals and value properties can be (times 1000+).
    This being demonstrated, I must add that I use globals and value properties quite often, because they are often very convenient
