Vault Update problems solved!

Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere, but I have just discovered a solution to one of my long running Aperture problems and must share in case it helps someone else out! I must say that that I am NOT technically good with computers (which is why I LOVE Macs), but I have found the odd bit of really helpful advice here and hope someone, who is like me, may find this useful:
Problem: Whenever I would run an update on my Aperture Vault (to a dedicated separate HD), I would ALWAYS get some error messages, every time. At first I did not worry about these thinking, that as long as most of the images have backed up, that would do, as I also backup to DVDs. But then I read that if you ever tried to restore, Aperture would refuse to do so on the grounds that one or more of the files has an error. I consider this a MAJOR fault with the Aperture software, and for some users, renders the vault concept useless (although I am sure that not everyone suffers from this). I would also always be told, on starting Aperture, that several projects and images were not stored in a vault, even when most of the update seemed to work.
Solution: I have shot a lot of weddings recently and have been adjusting parts of my workflow. I have found out that, if you DELETE all of your rejected files (as it happens, I back them up on DVD, then delete them), then, empty your trash, THEN run the vault update, it seems to work every-time, without any faults. After a year of errors my vault finally seems to be working as it should!.
Hope this helps someone.
Paul

Glad to help, As it was getting frustrating, goes to show newer is not always better, Keep an xp computer handy forever

  • Installation Problems, Permissions Problems, SW Update Problems, Solved

I'm posting here to relate some problems I've had and how I ultimately solved them, in the hope that it might help somebody.
The following relates to OS 10.5.4 on an imac PPC 1.8.
It started (at least the first symptom I noticed was) with Super Duper not working to auto-clone my drive, because the first thing SD does before running a clone job is to repair permissions on the subject drive. The repair permissions task failed with "the underlying task failed" error.
So I tried the manually repair permissions from Disk Utility and got the same "the underlying task failed" error. It's a bit alarming not to be able to repair permissions. I tried a reboot, no change. This persisted for at least a week as I didn't have time to aggressively go after it.
Then I purchased DiskWarrior (again - owned it years ago in Sys 9 days), as in my experience that was the "if all else fails" fix for everything directory-related. I booted from another blessed drive (do people still say that anymore? lol, showing my age) and ran DW on the drive in question. Sure enough DW found and fixed about 150 problems. Great I think, reboot from the original drive, run Disk Utility, repair permissions...nope! Same error. What now? I checked the console installer log for more and all the errors looked like "failure to write" permission type errors. Grr.
Verify Disk ran OK. I checked the SMART status and it was OK, as I was by now worrying about the physical drive.
Then along comes the 10.5.5 incremental update in Software Update and I get the following error: "The Installer could not install some files in "/" check permissions". Doh! Same thing with the Java update. Since I can't repair permissions I'm stuck.
So now I have only one course of action (well maybe there were others, but this is what I did) which was to do an Archive and Install. My OS X DVD is 10.5.0 so that is what I got of course when I reinstalled.
Running Disk Utility after the A&I allowed me to repair permissions successfully. Some progress. But now I had a slew of updates to get back to the present version of everything. Most installed successfully, except the 10.5.5 combo update. For that I got "package contents could not be validated". Rats.
So I decided (after reading here about SW update problems especially with combos) to manually download the 10.5.5 combo. For some reason running SW Update under 10.5.0 gave me download rates of 32kb/s, where I am used to 1.1MB/s. Projected download time 3 hrs....no way! So I booted back to my 10.5.4 clone and downloaded the 612MB at normal speed there. I downloaded the 10.5.1 incremental as well just in case.
Finally I was able to run the 10.5.5 combo (manually downloaded) successfully. Check Disk Utility and repair permissions...all good. Run SW Update and get the Java update, all good.
    Deep breath. Phew.
So there you have it. I was able to fix it all. I probably didn't need to buy DW (but it's so great I'm ok with that) as I conclude now that the A&I ultimately was the real fix. It was a very frustrating experience though, especially with SW update giving me a bad download.
I'm hoping that this post might now show up in searches and help somebody out there.
    Cheers
    G

I don't think you have either of those kernels... as they don't exist.  I assume you meant that you are using 3.10.5 and supposedly have 3.10.6 installed.  You issue is a bit of a catch 22, as you are unable to mount the ESP (no vfat module matching your running kernel), yet mounting the ESP would be required in order to properly udpate.  I imagine that you actually have the correct kernel as /boot/vmlinuz-linux.  But whatever mechanism you use to copy it from that location to the ESP didn't work.
You are going to have to boot from live media, and fix this from a chroot.  Please search around for how to do this, as this information is all over the place.
Looks like I'm in for a treat. I chroot-ed, did a full upgrade in case there was an even newer kernel (and there was, 3.10.7). After the upgrade I copied /boot/vmlinuz-linux, /boot/initramfs-linux.img and /boot/initramfs-linux-fallback.img to /boot/efi/EFI/arch/ renaming the files vmlinuz-arch.efi, initramfs-arch.img, initramfs-arch-fallback.img respectively. I unmounted everything and rebooted. Now reFINd freezes as soon as it tries to boot Arch.

  • Firmware update problem solved after Win XP SP3 -upd

I'm one of the numerous victims of ZEN firmware updating problem. At the start I had Win XP SP2 and WMP. My player is ZEN Micro 5gb and after trying to update firmware it had firmware problem and stayed in the recovery mode. Firmware updater and ZEN Media Explorer couldn't recognize the player. So that's how I got it work again:
    1. Rolled back WMP to WMP9, updated it to WMP0.
    2. Removed ZEN Media Explorer and Jukebox driver (all Creative stuff) from Add/Remove programs in Control Panel.
It didn't solve the problem. I also tried my player with couple of other computers, but it didn't help either.
    3. Installed Win XP SP3 -update.
    4. Reinstalled driver for ZEN Micro in Control Panel.
    5. Ran the firmware updater and this time it did recognize the player.
    (6. Updated WMP back to version and the player's still working.)
Hope this will help you too.

I can start the upgrading process, but at around 95% it stops, and says "firmware upgrade failed." I didn't uninstall WMP though, because I have Vista, and I hae no idea how to do it. I can only get my computer to recognize my 6G Zen when I go into recovery mode and choose 'reload firmware' then I connect it to the computer and I can start trying to upgrade it. If I dont go into recovery mode, its just a blank screen, the computer doesnt recognize it, and I can't even turn it off without reseting.
?I've tried so much, now when I try to upgrade, it loads a little bit and jumos to the end quckly and says "firmware upgrade fails" and nothing works. Do I have to try to do all the things you listed to fix this?

  • Aperture 3 vault update problems

I recently upgraded to Aperture 3. I have two problems with it:
    - The size of my library is somewhat north of 700 GB. The libary is stored on one external (Firewire 800) disk and so is the vault. I have worked today on some of my pictures and wanted to update the vault. When I do so on the general update vault icon the program goes on to calculate the disk space and then turns off. When I try to update by pressing the icon next to the specific vaults graphic it gives me a note that the disk space is not enough mentioning that a ridiculous amount of GBs are needed (numbered in the millions) and there is thus not enough space. Can anybody help?
    - The use of the keyboard shortcuts work at times and at other times they stop working at all. I have no clue what the trigger in each direction is. Any clues?

It is possible that there is an issue somewhere in your library and that it is struggling to write something to the vault. Perhaps try the steps listed on the Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics page.

  • Itunes driving me crazy! - CPU hogging, hanging up  -update: problem solved

My itunes (v.7.4.2) seems to have a problem that I can't find a solution to. I play a song...it plays, then uses like 90-100% of the CPU, hanging up at the same time (lots of spinning beachball) while continuing to play the track and getting an "App not responding message". This lasts maybe 3 or 4 minutes and it winds down, "App not responding" message disappears, at which point I can sometimes (not always) do something with it (i.e. play another track, stop, quit, etc) for a minute or so or until I push play again...then a given song will play and it will hang, drive the CPU again. fans turn on...drives me nuts!
    this repeats over and over.
    I have:
    Restarted
Cleared caches, repaired permissions, etc with Cocktail
Deleted the plists and started new
    All to no effect.
Other info - I have a huge library on three drives. 100GB or so. worked fine until very recently, though I have no idea what could have catalyzed this behavior. Occurs when external drives are disconnected and playing from internal mp3s.
Yay - I solved the problem myself...Had Albumartthingy installed some time back and it was gumming things up. deleted all of it and now it seems to be running fine. beware of third party apps that interfere with Itunes! thought I'd post this anyway to add to the knowledge base...

ok, i can rip music to my windows media player and then manually transfer it to itunes...is this the same concept as importing directly to itunes?

  • After getting an update from 10.6.8 many of my programs were no longer able to open. How can I undo the update or solve this problem another way?

After getting an update from 10.6.8 many of my programs were no longer able to open. How can I undo the update or solve this problem another way?

Do you have a bootable clone from prior to the update? If so, roll back with that.
Are your apps that won't open PPC and do they need Rosetta? Do you need to activate Rosetta?
Have you considered reinstalling 10.6 from your install disc and then coming forward with the 10.6.8 Combo Updater, then doing software update and not including whatever it was you installed that caused this propblem?
By the way - what update was it that caused this problem?

  • "Please connect to the internet-"problem solved by the latest Muse-update

    Hi staff,
I'm happy to tell you that the former problem with the error message "Please connect to the internet…" when trying to start Muse is solved now by the latest update. At that time I talked to James Boag, he assumed Muse might not recognize my USB-modem (and I should try a different access point, which I didn't) but this is not an issue any more. When I launched Muse recently, it updated automatically and then started with no problems.
Thanks for the great work you've done in that matter.
    Regards
    Norbert

    Hi arrakis13,
I’m afraid I cannot really help you.
I did not make any changes on my running system except that I’m on 10.8 Mountain Lion (upgraded from 10.6.8., no Lion in between), but this did not change the behavior of Muse at first. Only the update, which started automatically when I launched the app on August, 21, (still the trial version) caused the difference.
My firewall is on and in the firewall-options Muse has allowance for incoming connections, see the attached screenshot (sorry, in german, but you will understand the meaning). Airport is not active and I did not change my way to connect to the internet (as James Boag from Adobe suggested earlier, see also attached mailing). It just worked.
Meanwhile I upgraded to the official version (2.0.945) and still it works.
    Hope you find a solution.
    Regards

This is still happening for me.  I downloaded the beta yesterday and am on 10.7.  I run software update but Muse is not showing up as having an update.  My firewall is not running.  Any suggestions on how I can get this running would be much appreciated.
    Please let me know.
    Thanks!!

  • Has the updating problem been solved?

My feed was approved earlier today, but I am having some problems getting my page on the iTunes store to update.
    RSS: http://davefarmar.libsyn.com/rss
    Storefront: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=210951638
(Note: I have already pinged iTunes per the spec. I have also already tested the feed via a manual subscription request through the iTunes pulldown menu and successfully received the updated files.)
Modifications made to my initial episode are not appearing on my iTunes store page.
A test post that I added has also not appeared at the store.
Has the updating problem, which I saw posted about shortly before the new year, been solved?
    Thanks, Dave.

Looks like I just needed to be more patient (the updates have now showed up . . . sorry).

  • Acrobat Standard 9.1.2 update problem?

I'm running Acrobat Standard 9 on Windows Vista Ultimate.
Right after installing the Acrobat 9.1.2 update, but before restarting my system, I tried to open a PDF file, and experienced cascading file openings, where Acrobat seemed to be trying to open every PDF file on my hard drive in a separate window. Each window header contains the statement: "Adobe Acrobat not responding." After shutting down Acrobat through Task Manager, I then restarted my system, thinking that the problem was a failure to complete the update installation, but when I just tried to start Acrobat (without trying to open any file), it automatically began opening multiple PDF files again.
At that point, I ran a restore to a previous Acrobat version, but did not restart my system. After the restore was complete, my desktop displayed two Acrobat startup icons, one for v9.1.2 and one for the previous version. I tried to start Acrobat by clicking the previous verion icon, but had the same problem with automatic multiple file openings. When I checked the software list in Control Panel, I found that it only contained v9.1.2, and not the supposedly restored version. Does anyone know if I had to restart my system to make the restore work?
When it looked like the restore to previous version had not worked, I did an Acrobat program repair through Control Panel, and restarted my system, but when I tried to start Acrobat, the same problem occurred. Every time it occurs, I have to shut down Acrobat through Task Manager.
I never experienced this problem until I installed the 9.1.2 update. Has anyone else experienced problems with this update? Does anyone here know the cause of the automatic multiple file opening problem?

As far as I'm concerned, there is something screwy about this whole release.  I have used Acrobat Standard since v4.0, and was forced to buy v8 or v9 when I upgraded my OS to Vista, so I chose v9.  However, the most important feature to me (besides converting other documents to PDF files), something called FreeText, was replaced by something now called Typewriter.  Unfortunately, where FreeText was intuitive and seamless, I cannot view the result of a Typewriter session in my document, after entering new text and closing the feature.  On top of that, Adobe tech support seems to have gotten less accessible over the years.
This new problem has now rendered my Acrobat program completely unusable, and for some reason, Adobe's Internet support contact form doesn't even interact with my inputs.  This forum has proved useless to me for any problem-solving.  Anybody from Adobe Engineering listening?

  • Update problem - VBDATA table

    Dear All,
We have update problems in our Quality systems, and also in every R/3 system that we create from a Production system copy.
Sometime the UPD and UP2 work processes hung without apparent reason.
In the SM50 I can see one or more of my update processes running for a lot of time (many hours) on the table VBDATA without perform any action.
In the tcode SM12 I donu2019t see any kind of lock, and I donu2019t understand why only sometime this problem happens.
Of course, from the SM13 I can see that during this problem the system is not able to perform any kind of update.
As I told in the beginning of the message, I have the same problem in other two R/3 systems, both created with a system copy from the production system.
The Production and the Developer systems seem not affected by this problem.
Have you got any idea about the reason of the problem?
Even if the Production systems is not directly affected, all the IT department is not able to work on the Quality system (or any other Test system), and the only workaround is to kill the UPD (or UP2) WPs affected.
    Thanks in advance,
    Federico Biavati
    My R/3 System is a 4.7 on SLES9 and Oracle 10.2.0.2

    Hello Siva,
    This is what I did:
    > Check how many entries do you have in VBDATA currently.
More than 1.000 in every SAP systems that Iu2019m creating from Production
    > You might want to run the reorganize updates program to clear the old updates
    > that are pending/in error
    Good point!!
After the reorganization (ST14 u2013 Reorganize update requests) the table VBDATA is empty.
Iu2019ll check and Iu2019ll let you know if the problem is definitively solved.
    Thanks for you help,
    Federico

  • WiFi connection problem solved

My intel iMac and MBA had no problem but iPods 3g and 5g did.  I had an old Netgear router connected and sitting next to my Airport Express.  On a hunch I diconnected the Netgear and created a guest network to replace the one on the Netgear.  PROBLEM SOLVED!
Evidently our iPods and boarder's iPhone had problems sorting out the signals and finding the right addresses.  Moving the AE to a higher and slightly more central position also helped.
    Jim

Same here on a Vodafone PocketWiFi 2.
Tried NetworkManager, wicd, wifi-menu but all have the same issue.
I recently installed Aptosid on another machine and it has the same problem... It also has kernel version 3.9.
All the live CDs I've tried work, even an Arch CD from May works, though a current install does not.
I have no problems connecting to another (wpa2 enterprise) network yet can't on this 3G modem.
I'm hoping this isn't a permanent issue and perhaps an update very soon will fix this.
It seems the only way to fix this for now is to use an old version of Linux. I'm currently running a virtual machine only for the purpose of Internet sharing, very annoying.

  • Stuck with grub problem (SOLVED)

Today i tried to upgrade my Arch Linux, it downloaded everything that should be downloaded, it was installing upgrades but at the installing grub it stucks as like this
    "Copying /boot/grub/grub.cfg.pacsave to /boot/grub/grub.cfg"
I've waited it for about 15 minutes, it didn't move on. So i did ctrl+z to break. Then i tried to update again. But it gives an error which is:

Error occured, no packages were upgraded.

  • Oracle Timeout (update problem 8i)

    Hi,
I am updating on row in emp.
    update emp set sal = 29 where empno=7369;
and again trying to update same row with same empno from different console. With out giving commit to the first statement. Second console is getting hanged, waiting for lock. I dont want the second user to get hanged. It has to come out from the hang, by giving some error or message (..i.e You cant updated or something). I want to set some timeout for that. I tried with distributed_lock_timeout but it is obsolute in 8i. Do we have some global parameter to get this problem solve.
    Help me...

I don't know of any other initialization parameter for that (if someone else knows more, then welcome).
The best way would be "SELECT FOR UPDATE NOWAIT", but, since you can't modify your application, we have to rely on DISTRIBUTED_LOCK_TIMEOUT.
You could rename your table, for example :
    SQL> rename emp to emptab;
and, referring to my previous posting, create a synonym for that :
    SQL> create synonym emp for emptab@LOCAL;
If you want to change the value of DISTRIBUTED_LOCK_TIMEOUT, you can add a line like this in your initSID.ora :
    DISTRIBUTEDLOCK_TIMEOUT = <what you want in seconds>
BTW, if you can't modify your code, how do you manage the error conditions ?
