VCM 5.7.1 - Failure Collecting Event Log Data - "Unknown Error: -2147024891"

When attempting to collect on certain Windows 2003 Servers I'm receiving the error "Unknown Error: -2147024891". The application is utilizing a domain level service account that should have all the necessary administrative permissions. VMware suggested it may be a GPO setting, but my AD team has said it resides in the same organizational unit as other's that work without issue. Has anyone encountered this before?

I'm having the same problem, any ideas or resolutions?
*Edit* Just worked with VMware, turns out our workstation service had stopped. Make sure both the server and workstation services are started as they will cause certain parts of the collection to fail if they aren't.

  • Event Log stopped working - Error 1747 : The Authentication Service is Unknown

I reccently noticed that my scheduled tasks were no longer running. I tried to bring up the task scheduler and it said the service was not running. I checked the service and sure enough, it was not running. I tried to start it and it failed because the windows event log service, which is a dependency, was also not running. I tried to start the event log service, and gave the error above in the subject line.
The event log service uses a log on of "Local Service". There are other services that use the same log on and they start up with no problem. I have searched the internet for a solution to this and have tried several things I found with no luck. One was to run SFC, another was to delete the Windows/Logs and Windows/System32/Logfiles folders so they would be re-created on startup. I also tried subinacl to reset the ACLs on registry branches and the subfolders of %SystemDrive% as recommeded in another forum.
I am running Vista Home Premium and all the latest updates have neen applied. Anyone have any further ideas? (short of re-installing Vista).
    Thanks.

Hi there Robin. I am an IT Technician & felt that I needed to begin communication with you regarding this issue. I recently made a post in this thread detailing my issues & found resolution. I just wanted to share my post with you & hope that the information is useful to others that need to resolve these issues without re-installing their operating systems. Please find my post below:
Hi all. I am an IT technician & have recently been troubleshooting a customer's Windows Vista Home Premium laptop in a wireless home network.
In a nutshell the laptop suddenly stopped connecting to the wireless router; upon investigation I found lots of windows services were not starting; this sent me on a bit of a wild goose chase as this showed all signs of some kind of trojan / malware infection hogging the system. Here are some of the things I saw:
1). Norton 360 wasn't even running correctly & I was unable to view it's firewall status.
2). Windows firewall was disabled & I was unable to start it (service failed error message).
3). I was unable to view windows event logs & received "Error 1747 : The Authentication Service is Unknown"
4). Windows Side Bar was all blanked out & not showing any gadgets
5). I attempted a system restore but that failed (I saw references in system restore that the Bonjour service had been un-installed)
I did loads of further investigation & found this thread. It would appear that removing, or even trying to remove / un-install the Bonjour service may cause the above mentioned issues in windows Vista. I have not seen this kind of errata in windows XP.
I have heard of people pulling their hair out & re-installing the operating system possibly due to experiencing these issues.
    Please Read On....
    Resolution that worked for me:
I ran the Winsock corruption fix that is mentioned in previous threads as per microsoft's instructions found at the following URL: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811259
Manual steps to recover from Winsock2 corruption for Windows Vista users
Winsock corruption can cause connectivity problems. To resolve this issue by using Network Diagnostics in Windows Vista, follow these steps:
    1.
Click , and then click Network.
    2.
    Click Network and Sharing Center.
    3.
In the Network and Sharing Center box, click Diagnose and Repair.
Note You may also access the Network and Sharing Center in Control Panel.
If the Network and Diagnostic tool was unable to find a problem, you can manually repair or reset Winsock.
Manual steps to repair or to reset Winsock for Windows Vista users
    1.
Click , type cmd in the Start Search box, right-click cmd.exe, click Run as administrator, and then press Continue.
    2.
Type netsh winsock reset at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.
Note If the command is typed incorrectly, you will receive an error message. Type the command again. When the command is completed successfully, a confirmation appears, followed by a new command prompt. Then, go to step 3.
    3.
Type exit, and then press ENTER
Hey Presto!!!! After re-booting everything is back online & all necessary windows services & norton 360 are starting as normal.
    Further Information on Bonjour Service:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonjour_(software)
As I understand & in my experience the Bonjour service is installed as a sub-aplet with certain 3rd party software applications including Apples itunes & Adobe newest Creative Suite 3 installs Apple’s Bonjour service even if you don’t install Version Cue. Its main goal is to provide zero-configuration connectivity between Version Cue server and the suite’s applications.
A bit more CSi & i've established how to un-install Bonjour service; there is a great topic on this subject at the following URL: http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2008/02/10/how-to-uninstall-or-remove-bonjour-mdnsresponderexe/
Thanks to all for your post & input...it has really helped to get this issue resolved (well for me anyway) & has of course save a re-install!!!!
I will keep an eye on this thread...please post your resolutions / experiences to help others.
    Kind regards

My laptop is giving me fatal errors and it reboots by itself.
Can anyone help me to solve this problem? Please guide me through this since I don't know a lot about computers.
I already reinstalled windows 7 without any result.
    Thanks...

    Hey,
If you have already reinstalled Windows but without success the case is clear in my opinion: Its a serious hardware malfunction.
Its really hard to say what the problem is but theoretically the RAM modules could be affected. This you can check using Memtest86 diagnostic tool and the HDD you can check using other tools like Drive Fitness Test.
But generally speaking if your notebook is under warranty give your notebook to an ASP and let the guys check the unit. Thats easier ;)

  • [SOLVED] getting KDE4.2 event log in .xsession-errors

    Hi,
My KDE4.2 desktop started adding log entries in the .xsession-errors file. They look like this:
    knotify(6768) KNotify::event: 49 ref= 0
    kwin(6764)/kdeui (KNotification) KNotification::slotReceivedId: 0
    kwin(6764)/kdeui (KNotification) KNotification::close: 0
    kwin(6764)/kdeui (KNotification) KNotification::~KNotification: -2
Everytime I interact with the desktop (e.g. click icons or switch window), it appends those entries in the file - which compound quite fast. Does anyone know if those are real error messages which I have to fix, or just some debug messages from one of the module?

Agreed, I did the same yesterday. In the /home/USER/.kde4/Autostart directory, I wrote the following simple bash script:
    #!/bin/bash
    rm /home/USER/.xsession-errors
This deletes the file .xsession-errors at startup and avoids any potential accumulated file 'buildup' and resulting wasted partition space.
According to the file /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc, it contains the following statement:
    # Default is ".xsession-errors"
This indicates that kdm creates this file no matter what (default), and as far as I know, it cannot be avoided, but can be deleted upon startup.

  • Methods for Remote Event Log Collection (WMI vs RPC vs WinRM)

    Hi,
I'm currently evaluating several 3rd party tools (SIEMs) to help me with log management in a large (mostly) Windows domain environment. Each tool uses a different approach to collecting the event log from remote systems, and I'd like help understanding the
pros and cons of each approach. I've dropped this in the scripting forum as the tools are essentially running different scripts and it's this part I would like to understand.
WMI: An agent installed on a windows server connects to each monitored box and grabs their event logs via WMI. Our legacy SIEM already collects from over 2000 servers using this method.
RPC: As above, but using RPC. No changes required on the remote machines.
WinRM: An appliance integrates with AD and collects event logs remotely using WinRM. This is reasonably new to me (i'm a security guy, not a sys admin) but I seem to have to enable an additional remote management tool, and open a new listening port on every
single machine I want to collect the event log from.
I read the following blog entry, which seemed to indicate that RPC was the best choice for performance, considering I'm going to be making high frequency connections to over 2000 targets:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/josebda/archive/2010/04/02/comparing-rpc-wmi-and-winrm-for-remote-server-management-with-powershell-v2.aspx
However, everything I have found on the subject of remote event collection seems to suggest that WinRM is the "approved" method for event log collection. The vendor using the WinRM approach is also suggesting that it is the only official MS supported
    way of doing this.
So I would like to ask, is there a reason that WMI and RPC should not be used for this purpose, since they clearly work and don't require any changes to my environment? Is there some advantage to WinRM that justifies touching my entire estate and opening
an additional port (increasing my attack surface)?
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi,
I'm aware of the push method, and may indeed move to it in time, although I'm just as likely to install a 3rd party agent on the machines to perform this role with greater functionality and manageability for the same effort. I've only seen organisations
using commercial agents (snare, splunk, etc) or WMI for log collection in practice, so I don't think I'm the only one with reservations about it.
Anything that involves making configuration changes to a large and very varied estate is not something to do lightly. Particularly if alternatives exist that don't require this change to be carried out immediately. That is why I'm looking to properly understand
the pros and cons of these "legacy" approaches for use as an interim solution if nothing more.
Pulling probably is more resource intensive, although I've not seen an actual comparison, but it's not really that fragile in my experience. If a single pull fails, you just collect the logs you missed at the next pull cycle in a few seconds/minutes.
All logs are pulled directly into a SIEM for analysis, so that part is covered.
Anyway, I appreciate the input, but I'm still holding out for concrete reasons to move away from WMI/RPC or to embrace WinRM. Bear in mind I'm considering fixing something that doesn't look broken to me!
    Cheers,

This event is generated when a logon request fails. It is generated on the computer where access was attempted.
The Subject fields indicate the account on the local system which requested the logon. This is most commonly a service such as the Server service, or a local process such as Winlogon.exe or Services.exe.
The Logon Type field indicates the kind of logon that was requested. The most common types are 2 (interactive) and 3 (network).
The Process Information fields indicate which account and process on the system requested the logon.
The Network Information fields indicate where a remote logon request originated. Workstation name is not always available and may be left blank in some cases.
The authentication information fields provide detailed information about this specific logon request.
    - Transited services indicate which intermediate services have participated in this logon request.
    - Package name indicates which sub-protocol was used among the NTLM protocols.
    - Key length indicates the length of the generated session key. This will be 0 if no session key was requested.

Well I opened the case for him and he never followed up with Microsoft :-(
It's a kerberos issue, we're told to ignore it.  Would you be willing to be patient and stubborn and work with CSS to at least understand what's going on better?  I can tell you it's normal with Essentials but not the exact technical reason it's
    happening.
Unfortunately TechNet isn't coming back, sorry folks :-(

  • Unconfigured VG Ports Show Event Log Errors

Unconfigured ports on a VG224 or VG248 show up in the Callmanager's Event Log as Stop Errors. Any way to suppress or filter these? I have roughly a hundred voice gateways with countless unassigned ports. It makes the Event log unusable to viewing other status.

Telnet to the VG248 and disable the port. If you leave them enabled, with no DIDs on them, or unregistered, they will sit there and peg your CCM constantly wanting to register. I just found that out.
Enable the next open port on the VG248?s. If possible, fill up on VG248, move to the next one.
    To enable a port:
    i. Telnet to VG248
    ii. Login
    iii. Configure
iv. Login with the #CCM pw
    v. Scroll to Telephony then Port Specific Parameters, then select ?enabled port? to disable it
vi. Change your status from Disable to Enable (hit enter for menu to select Enable)
vii. Esc out until it exits the logout menu.

You have to open in internet explorer the page: http://nameofserver/reports.
If you don't receive any error opening this page that's measn the reporting services is working well.
If you are receiving an error then you have to check the configuration of reporting services.

  • How to extract audit log data from every document library in site collection using powershell?

    Hi All,
I have n number of document library in one site collection,
My query is- How to extract audit log data from every document library in a site collection using powershell?
Please give solution as soon as possible?

    Hi inguru,
For SharePoint audit log data, These data combine together in site collection. So there is no easy way to extract audit log data for document library.
As a workaround, you can export the site collection audit log data to a CSV file using PowerShell Command, then you can filter the document library audit log data in Excel.

  • Windows 2008 R2 Sp1 backup failing with Event Id 517 and Error Code: 2147942487

We have a windows share that we dump multiple windows backup images from our servers.   We have 1 server consistently failing when performing a manual "Backup Once...." operation.
The error message in the Windows Backup gui is: "Failed The parameter is incorrect"
The event log shows an error of 517 with the message: "
The backup operation that started at '‎2015‎-‎01‎-‎12T14:25:20.681861800Z' has failed with following error code '2147942487' (One or more arguments are invalid). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the
    issue is resolved.
The strange part is when we choose a different location to accept the backup we have success.  The backup starts, but fails between 1-6 GB transferred.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.

    Hi,
Do you mean that if you change the backup location, the backup could be started - but still fail after backing up 1 - 6 GB data?
One of the possible cause is an incorrect partition table entry and NTFS total sectors.
Please test to shrink the volume you are going to backup for several MB.
Right click volume >>Select shrink, shrink several MB (such as 3MB).
Then extend the volume back to original size. You can right click on volume and select Extend volume.
When it finished, see if issue still exists.

  • Vista got corrupt after power failure. sfc reports error and Event log service is unable to start itself.

    Hi,
After a sudden power failure, I guess vista file system is corrupt.   I am able to start vista in normal mode, but it seems there are errors like Event Log service unable to start itself,  when I start IE, it closes automatically ,
Norton antivirus does not start itself.  and so on.
After Bing search, I went to safe mode and executed sfc /scannow and it reported error as below.
"Windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them"
Unfortunately I am unable to upload log file, so I am pasting CBS.log content here....   Please advice.
Some parts of logs are removed due to limit of 60000 characters.
    Please advice.
    Regards
