Veiwing a PDf using Activex Direct to stage

I'm new to Director, and to the scripting side especially. I have managed to complete all of my project except for when I get to a point I need to be able to have the users click on a button and have a PDF load in the PDF's Activex sprite. This is the code I have attached to the button:
on mouseup
sprite(17).src = the moviePath &"OSME.pdf"
end
When they click on the button, nothing happens, any ideas on why this wouldnt be loading?
Thanks!
Tim

You shouldn't have to do anything with the AX sprite to make it work (assuming it implements a src property). I assume you have a copy of Buddy API for your platform already - if not, grab it from here. To install it you need to place it in the folder named Xtras inside the folder your authoring application is installed. You must be on Windows to be running AX controls, so you should put it in the 'Adobe Director 11\Configuration\Xtras\Scripting\' folder. Restart Director and the xtra should be available. To test that it's installed properly you could check the Scripting Xtras drop-down list in either your message window or a script window (it's the menu with an xtra icon) - you should see an entry for BudAPI.
Now alter your script like so:
on mouseUp
tPath = the moviePath & "OSME.pdf"
if baFileExists(tPath) then
sprite(17).src = tPath
else
alert "File not found:" && tPath
end if
end
Sorry, I can't seem to view your attachment - how do I access it?

I don't understand the logic of what you are trying to do, but anytime code doesn't do what you expect, the first place to start looking is at any errors that are being generated - which you aren't collecting or displaying...

• How to control and display video from IP camera using ActiveX control over Internet.

Hello,
I need to control my IP cameras over the internet. I need to log into the cameras and then display the video. There's an ActiveX control registered on the computer and works fine with IE to access and control the cameras. Controlling the cameras using IE works fairly well, but there are some quirks that I'd like to eliminate by using my own custom code.
Has anyone created a vi that controls a Foscam FI8905W over the Internet? I’ve attempted, but I keep getting a catastrophic failure when I try to call ManagementConnect Method in the DVM_IPCam2 ActiveX Control Module V1.0. I'm not sure whether I need to establish an IP connection with the cameras first, or allow the ActiveX control to establish it for me.
Some example code would be greatly appreciated. Running LabVIEW 2011 on a Win7 32bit. Even some code used to control a similar device using ActiveX over Internet would be helpful.

I have an example vi for interfacing to the foscam activex.
I plan on using mouse click events within the activex window to trigger the PT function.
I only have the basic up/down/right/left directions and not the down-right/down-left/up-right/up-left in the enum. You can load the camera's web page and view the source to see the Java script code that uses the activex control. There are definitions for the other directions.
I had to mark the control as "Disabled" to keep click events from going to the activex control. If I double click the control, it goes full screen. If I then click on it to get out of full screen mode the video never returns or returns to the wrong spot in the VI.

• Can't convert files to pdf using Acrobat 8 Standard or 9 Pro

I am having a major problem. I have tried converting both Word 2003 and Excel 2003 documents to pdf using Acrobat 8 Standard (I can't recall which version because I uninstalled and installed a trial version of Acrobat 9 Pro) and Acrobat 9 Pro. I have tried to convert directly from the open document and through Acrobat using create from file. In every instance the process starts and then stops after a few moments. When I try the conversion from within Acrobat, I get the following error message: " Pdf conversion failed, please correct the error and retry." When I try the conversion directly from Word or Excel, the conversion starts, stiops suddenly and gives no error message. I have had Acrobat 8 Standard installed for a couple of years. It worked fine on this computer until the problem started a week ago or so. There have been no software or hardware changes that woudl trigger suspicion.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the 8 Standard version. I have uninstalled the 8 Standard version and installed the 9 Pro trial version. I have run the repair module on both versions. I'm sure it is something simple but I just can't figure out what the "error" is that I need to "correct". Any suggestions?
As an aside, I have several Adobe programs (Photoshop CS5, Contribute 3 and Acrobat), all of them expensive. Their business model of offering no unpaid support (even for this type of problem) is one reason I hate Adobe more than Microsoft... but I rant.

When you uninstalled, you should have used the MS Installer Cleanup utility. It cleans up a lot of the junk left over in the registry. You should have also deleted the Acrobat folder. Then you would reinstall. You did not indicate your OS and it may be that you need to update the AA8 to get it to work correctly. Also, the installs and uninstalls can mess up your registration process if you are not careful. If you uninstall the AA9 trial, you will not be able to reinstall it for use. At this point, I can only suggest you do a repair of your installation and be sure you have all of the updates.

• Why can I not Convert a Microsoft Office Document to a PDF using the Context Menu?

Why can I not Convert a Microsoft Office 2013 Document to a PDF using the options found in the Context Menu? (Ex: Convert to PDF, Combine Supported Files into PDF?)
I updated to Acrobat XI PRO recently, but now i'm unable to combine or convert microsoft word docs to PDF.
In Adobe Acrobat X I had this feature below, and it would combine Microsoft Office Documents all into a single PDF. Now I no longer have this issue in Adobe Acrobat XI Pro. It seems like it was program named Adobe Elements that was running the conversion.

Ajlan. That page is showing as not available. Would the fix apply to Adobe Acrobat X and XI?

Thanks in advance

We didn't say it doesn't work. We said it isn't supported.
There are a number of other ways to make a PDF. The one which would
give the most control is if your application directly printed to GDI,
controlling the font directly. This could print to Adobe PDF.
You could look for an application that gives control of font for
printing.
You could use a text-to-PostScript system and distill the result. You
could even look for a non-Adobe text-to-PDF.
Working in the unsupported and dangerous world you chose, the font
size for text conversion is set (and this is very bad design from
Adobe) in the settings for Create PDF > From Web Page. There is no API
to this.

• How can you change individual words in a PDF using javascript?

Hi,
I am trying to do some simple text replacement in a PDF file using Acrobat. Specifically, I want to do some simple transliteration of words or partial transliteration. For instance, I would like to change a word like "red" to "ρed". This is to help me get used to the Greek alphabet step by step.
Anyway, I downloaded Acrobat and there is no feature to do a single letter search and replace -- only word replacement. I have a Computer Science degree and decided to investigate the javascript capabilities to see if I can make those a simple letter replacement script. However, I have gotten to the point where I can cycle through every word in the PDF (using functions like getPageNthWord), and I can make a replacement on the string returned using something like: val.replace(/r/, "ρ"). However, I don't know how to replace the word in the PDF file....such as with a hypothetical function setPageNthWord (which does not exit). I have found the online documentation very thin on this, and I am scratching my head. Perhaps, it is something to do with the PDF format that I do not understand. So, is there a way to simply change text of a PDF file, like I am asking? All I am looking for is simple script to change a letter to another across a PDF.
thanks if you can help
Justin

JS can't edit the text in a PDF file directly. There are workarounds, like
using a redaction with overlay text or simply placing a new field or
annotation on top of the old text with the new one, but they are all far
from perfect and won't cause a "reflow" of the document, so if the two
texts are not of the same length the result will look odd. Also there's the
issue of which font to use (font family, color, size, etc.), which JS can't
know so you'll have to tell it.

• Converting xml file with arabic content to pdf using FOP

Hello all
I am trying to convert a dynamically generated xml file in which most of the data comes from the oracle database with arabic content, to pdf using FOP. I have used "Windows-1256" encoding for the xml. If i open the xml generated with the internet explorer the arabic content displays properly but the pdf is not generated and the acrobat reader shows the file as corrupted or not supported. Please help me. Its very urgent.
Thanks & Regards
Gurpreet Singh

There is no direct support for importing RTF from an XML extract. Perhaps feature 1514 "Mapping formatted XML data into multiline field" will be of some use. This was released in 11.0, I believe.
Essentially you can establish paragraph and certain text formatting like bold and underline when you include the proper token information in the data. I believe this is similar to simple HTML tokens.
Example: <FIELD><P>First paragraph of data.</P><P>New paragraph with <B><U>bold and underline text</U></B>. Rest of paragraph normal.</P></FIELD>
The result is something like this:

First paragraph of data.

New paragraph with bold and underline text. Rest of paragraph normal.

• Cannot convert webpages to pdf using Acrobat X Pro with IE9 and Windows 7, worked fine until a few m

Cannot convert webpages to pdf using Acrobat X Pro with IE9 and Windows 7, worked fine until a few months and updates ago

I tried your suggestion, not knowing that the direct pdf printer would also "save as" PDF, but when I try your suggestion and use the Adobe PDF printer that is a direct creation of the PDF from the browser (IE9), instead of the "black out" areas I get when I use the "Convert to" button, I get missing blocks of the resulting PDF, and only get the first 1/4 to 1/3 of the webpage.
Just to clarify, when I said I print the webpage and then scan, that is a work around I have to do if I need a scanned version of the way a webpage appears on a particular date and time, instead of the one step process I used to be able to do when Adobe Acrobat would actually convert the webpage to a pdf without blackout areas or, if I try your suggestion, blank spots with a partial webpage. But the idea was one I had not thought of and I appreciated the thought.
Yes, Acrobat was updated, and is updated, and was working fine until a few months ago, Win 7 and Office 32 bit versions, Office 2010

• Creating PDF from XML directly in a content management system?

Hi!
This is my first post here and I've tried to find any previous posts that could answer my question but to no avail. Also I think and hope this is the correct sub forum to post it in.
I work at a company that produces a product catalogue that is published as a webpage, a PDF document (used as the basis for a tablet app) and a printed catalogue from a PDF. For the PDF (used in the tablet app and the printed catalogue) we are using a CMS based on XML that produces Adobe FrameMaker documents which we then export the PDF from. We are looking in to updating the system and make it flow much better but are a bit uncertain of what the best way to go would be.
A solution I'm thinking of would be to have the content of the product catalogue in some kind of XML based service that can export the information in XML. This would hopefully make it possible to send the documents either directly to PDF by XML and some style sheets or import the XML into some InDesign templates (for the more complicated designs at intro pages etc).
One important aspect of the product catalogue is that we have all information saved in different languages so there has to be some kind of connection between the templates and different language versions -- ie. the page design but different language text flows for each language edition.
What I wonder is. What kind of services/solutions would there be that handles XML to PDF for a quite complicated product catalogue (ie. the different language versions)?
Thanks in advance!

The difference between the two packages is that PatternStream effectively works on a "pull" principle (the content is retrieved into the template(s) by queries at the appropriate locations), while Miramo is a "push" (the tagged content is processed by Miramo using templates to create the DTP files). SInce Miramo allows programatical processing before the content is pushed into the DTP app, you can do all sorts of manipulations, conditional processing, automatically insert markers and variables, etc. so it allows for a fairly complex layout, even with FrameMaker. It also allows api's and scripts to be triggered at the backend when the publication has been assembled for further processing/manipulation.
Is there any particular reason that you want to move from the FM engine to the ID one? In terms of throughpu,t FM streams run very much faster than ID ones. Also, unless the layouts are extremely complex, in an automated environment, there are very few catalogue layouts that I've seen that couldn't also be handled using a FM workflow.
Are there any samples on line of the types of catalogues that you are currently producing? This would help in assessing which tools and workflows might be more appropriate to your situation.

• Direct to Stage

Hi
I'm trying to play a windows media file in my Director
project, but its always on top, and I cannot put a button on top of
it, of course, to let the user choose to skip the intro movie. Well
the movie is always on top because of direct to stage, but I dont
see the option to turn it on or off in the property inspector
window. I thought maybe they moved the option, but the help file
says to click the sprite, and uncheck or check the DTS option in
under the windows media tab in the property inspector, but I see no
option for this. Any help
would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Chris

I don't think that this will work with Windows Media files,
but if you
can convert your digital video to Quicktime, you can do a few
things
1) play not DTS
2) Use a 1-bit mask to make bits of the QT sprite invisible
(even
playing DTS)
Using option 2 is the best since it will let you play the
video with
full performance and still allow you to use buttons with
rollover states.
If that is not an option, you can use the video as a button
(like Sean's
advice), and check which part of the video the mouse is over
and change
the cursor at different times. It is not as good as having a
rollover
effect on the actual button, but it is better than nothing.
