VerifyError: Illegal local variable number. Class compiled, but run failed

Environment:
Visual Age for Java 3.5.3 (compiles to 1.2.2 class files)
Runtime is the JRE 1.3.1 plugin.
I have a class that VA compiles without problem,
but when I use the compiled jar, the VM fails with
the error
java.lang.VerifyError: (class: <completeClassName>, method: <myMethod> signature: (Ljava/lang/Object;)F) Illegal local variable number
     at <rest of stack trace>
I traced it back to the following piece of code:
// produces failure
BlockLabel: do
if (true) break BlockLabel; // disable block for testing
while(true==false);
// produces no failure
BlockLabel: do
// if (true) break BlockLabel; // stay with test
while (true==false);
I am using these constructs
with a labeled block,
the do{..}while(true==false);
and if(true) break BlockLabel;
in lots of places in my code
and it never produced any problems.
So the VerifyError for "Illegal local variable number" must be due to some other reason. Can anyone shed some light on this? I have scanned the bug parade and have found VerifyErrors, but none with explicit mention of "illegal local variable number".
Thanks, Sylvia

How long is the method that this code is in?

  • Classes compile but program doesn't run????

    Hello all.
    I am working on certain program and all the classes compile but when I try to run the app. I don't get anything displayed. I am using BLUEJ as editor and I currently have JDK-1.3.1_06 installed. I am running WIN-2000-PRO.
    I also tried running the program from command line and these are the errors I was getting:

    THANKS EVERYBODY FOR THE HELP.

    nope, there is NOTHING WRONG WITH THE INSTALLATION
    when you get "wrong name snapshot (SnapShot)" it means "I (java.exe), have been called with the arguments 'java snapshot', yet I cannot find the 'snapshot' class. However there is a class named 'SnapShot', which I think you may be referring to"
    what command line program are you using? methinks something may be auto-lowercasing what you type before passing it on to the system
    Also on unix style systems is it valid and runnable to have 2 classes where the only difference in the name is casing?

  • Project run smooth when compiled but run slow in flash player

    Hey guys,
    I have an interactive clip i made for a band.
    The clip is compound of mini games and videos.
    When I compile the project is FlashDevelop - everything runs smooth and nice at 24 fps.
    When I run the swf through the flash player (10.1 r52) the clips runs very slow (1-5 fps).
    Does anyone encountered anything like this?
    Thanks
    Eldad

    1.  update your flash player
    2.  make sure you have no trace statements in your swf
    3.  make sure there are no debug options selected when you publish your swf.

  • Procedure with variable number of columns

    Hi, I have a procedure that looks like this:
    PROCEDURE PROC(p_cursor OUT sys_refcursor)
    And in the procedure, I build up QUERY dynamically and the number of columns varies at runtime.
    At the end I do
    OPEN p_cursor for QUERY
    Then to call this, I'm doing
    call PROC(?)
    My question is, how would I go about running the query from this procedure, then adding rows or modifying the existing results, then returning the modified data?
    What I want to do is add a new row based on some condition, so I still need to return a variable number of columns, but I need to modify the results before I return them.
    Is there any way of doing this? I need to do some calculations on the columns (the variable columns), create a new row, insert into result set, and return this new result set.

    A sys_refcursor is ideally suited to pass back to a front end gui like .NET or Java which can then use that cursor to retrieve the data.
    In PL/SQL there is no point in using a sys_refcursor unless you know, at design/compile time what the returned columns are going to be.
    If the resultant columns are dynamic, then you have no choice but to use the DBMS_SQL package, where you can parse and execute any SQL statement you like and then use the DBMS_SQL package to describe what the resultant columns are and how many there are. From that you can reference the columns by position rather than by name.
    e.g.

    SQL>In 11g, you can create a sys_refcursor and then the DBMS_SQL package allows you to convert that refcursor into a DBMS_SQL cursor so that you can get the description of the results and do the same. This isn't available prior to 11g though.
    However_ before any of that, you should really ask yourself if there is a real need to dynamically be creating queries. There is rarely any real need to do that and if you're finding it's common in your application then this is often a sign of poor design or poorly defined business requirements (leaving the technical side to try and be "flexible" and hence leading to unmaintainable code etc.).

  • How come my local variable is not updating it's value with respect to what's happening in the while loop?

    Hello,
    I am trying to extract data out of a while loop as my declarations update with respect to the iteration number. I have attempted to use both local variables and shift registers, but with no luck.
    I have also done the following example: http://www.ni.com/white-paper/7585/en and it works like a charm.
    I attached the PNG file with local variable declaration circled in red. Will attach a VI in the next respnose.
    Thanks

    OK, looking at the code...
    Can you explain what it is supposed to do? What's the purpose of the value property node read which only seems to update an indicator.
    The inner while loop should proably be a FOR loop, because the number of iterations is known before the loop starts.
    Your use of formula nodes seems overly complicated.

  • Create Local Variable in Custom.pll

    Hi,
    I want to create and calling local variable in custom.pll. As i know, we can create local variable with personalization form. but i didn't find the way to create local variable in custom.pll.
    Is there any way to create local variable in custom.pll and calling that variable ?
    Thanks

    I think what you want is to create a GLOBAL variable, a LOCAL variable would be available to the Procedure/Function being executed.  But to create the local variable, you add it between the Function/Procedure declaration and the begin
    PROCEDURE abc(p_input    VARCHAR2);
      v_count       NUMBER := 0;
    BEGIN
    END;
    A GLOBAL reaches out past the execution of the proc defined in CUSTOM.pll.  You can simply type GLOBAL.<var_name> := <value>.
    BEGIN
      GLOBAL.xx_count := 0;
    END;
    Though I like the ability Personalizations give you of using Init Value vs. Value,  Init Value will assign a value if the variable does not exist ... and creates it.  Value just assigns a value.
    Some say you have do a COPY(value, NAME_IN('variable name')) instad of GLOBAL.<variable_name>, I have never had to use this.

  • How many ways to read and write a local variable in a called VI?

    Ciao!
    I'm producing my first TestStand sequence. It is called "FirstAttempt" and it is made by a single step which calls a VI. One of the first dilemmas i encountered realizing this sequence is how to read and write a local variable (created going in Variables -> Locals ('FirstAttempt') -> <right click to insert local>) in the called VI.
    The first way (the only one i tried) is to create a control and an indicator on the VI front panel, connect them to their respective terminals in the connector pane and then specify (going in Step Settings -> Module) that these connectors (shown in the Parameter Name column) are linked to the local variable (selected in the Value column).
    The second way (not tried) consists in using TestStand API: create a Sequence Context reference on the VI front panel, link it to a property node in the block diagram, select the property "Locals" and extract from this the local variable name and value which, i think, can be readable and writable.
    So...
    Are the shown ways correct?
    Are there other ways?
    Knowing that a "local" variable can be considered "global" within the whole sequence, is there the possibility to simply create a reference to the local variable and use the reference in the called VI block diagram in order to save space in the connector pane (if using method 1) or in the block diagram (if using method 2)?
    Thanks!
    Message Edited by aRCo on 09-17-2009 05:09 AM

    Hi,
    Before TestStand 3 you would use the second way you quoted as its the only way.
    But now you would use the first way you quoted. You may still what to pass the SequenceContext if you were going to use the TestStand API. For TestStand 3.x and above you would use this way as the first chose. (Personnelly, I would not pass the SequenceContext into a VI if I know it was never going to be used in that VI.)
    Not sure I understand your final comment, maybe you are liking it to passing the reference of a control to a subVI so that the control can be updated from within the subVI.
    If this is the case and you had a situation where you had a step that was running in parallel with the rest of the steps in the sequence either as a separate thread or execution and were dependent on the contents of the  local variable changing from that parallel running step, then you would have to use the API SetVal method to change the local.
    Hope this is clear.

  • How to Set up the  variables and others to compile and Run Java Programs

    Hello,
    I have just downloaded the jdk1.6.0_07 and jre1.6.0_07 and installed it in C:\Program files\Java in my Windows XP ,So please tell me how to sett up the enviroment variables etc to compile and run Java Programs from Command Prompt.
    thanks

    To set the PATH permanently, add the full path of the jdk1.6.0_<version>\bin directory to the PATH variable. Typically this full path looks something like C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_<version>\bin. Set the PATH as follows on Microsoft Windows:
    1. Click Start > Control Panel > System on Windows XP or Start > Settings > Control Panel > System on Windows 2000.
    2. Click Advanced > Environment Variables.
    3. Add the location of bin folder of JDK installation for PATH in User Variables and System Variables. A typical value for PATH is:
    C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_<version>\bin

  • Custom class loader and local class accessing local variable

    I have written my own class loader to solve a specific problem. It
    seemed to work very well, but then I started noticing strange errors in
    the log output. Here is an example. Some of the names are in Norwegian,
    but they are not important to this discussion. JavaNotis.Oppstart is the
    name of my class loader class.

    JavaNotis/SendMeldingDialog$1 is a local class in the method
    JavaNotis.SendMeldingDialog.init, and it's accessing a final local
    variable named indeks. The compiler automatically turns this into a
    variable in the inner class called val$indeks. But look at the error
    message, there is an extra space in front of the variable name.
    This error doesn't occur when I don't use my custom class loader and
    instead load the classes through the default class loader in the JVM.
    Here is my class loading code. Is there something wrong with it?
    Again some Norwegian words, but it should still be understandable I hope.

    Regards,
    Knut Stre

    I'm not quite sure how Java handles local classes defined within a method, but from this example it seems as if the local class isn't loaded until it is actually needed, that is when the method is called, which seems like a good thing to me.
    The parent class is already loaded as you can see. It is the loading of the inner class that fails.
    But maybe there is something I've forgotten in my loading code? I know in the "early days" you had to do a lot more to load a class, but I think all that is taken care of by the superclass of my classloader now. All I have to do is provide the raw data of the class. Isn't it so?

  • Local variable can't be accessed from inner class ???????? Why ??????

    The compiler complains that "sub" is in the inner class, which is the ActionListener class, must be declared final. Please tell me what to do with it. I want to add an ActionListener to each MyButton Object in the array. Thanks ......

    OK, now I changed my code to this :
    for ( int i = 0; i <= 2; i++ ) {
      for ( int j = 0; j <= 2; j++ ) {
        grids[i][j] = new MyButton ();
        grids[i][j].setBorder(but);
        getContentPane().add(grids[i][j]);
        grids[i][j].addActionListener(new ActionListener() {
         public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
            if ( grids[i][j].getState() == 0 ) {
               grids[i][j] = new MyButton( (Icon) new ImageIcon(imageFile));
              if ( imageFile.equals("cross.jpg") ) {
               grids[i][j].changeState(1);
              else {
              grids[i][j].changeState(2);
    [/cpde]
    Thanks for your advice !!!!!!
    Now the compiler says that i and j are local variables accessed from inner classes, needs to be declared final. How can I solve this then ???

  • Inner class inside a method - how does it access method's local variable?

    hello All:
    I've learnt that, an inner class, if defined inside a method, it can access the method's local variables, only when they are defined as "final".
    Anyone can help explain the rationale behind it?

    In java, everything is about pass-by-reference.
    Wrong! Nothing in Java is ever pass-by-reference.
    Java uses pass-by-value everywhere.
    It makes sense to me if the reason of enforcing a variable to be "final" is to prevent it being messed up.No, the reason is that a copy is made and if the variable weren't final then it could change later on and the developer could be confused because his inner class didn't "see" that change.
    The variable being final prevents that scenario.
    However, if a copy of the variable is made inside the inner class, i dont see how possible it could affect variables outside of class?Such a copy is made, but the language designers wanted to hide that fact from the developer. By forcing all accessed variables to be declared final the developer has no way to realize that he's actually working on a copy.

  • Local variable accessed within inner class

    Hey everybody,
    My program keeps telling me that it wont work because one of my methods is calling a local variable inside an inner class. Does anyone know what this means and how to fix it?
    Heres the code:
    public class SliderExample extends JPanel{
    int value=0;
    public SliderExample(int imw, int imh, Image img, BufferedImage buf, Graphics2D biCon){
    super(true);
    this.setLayout(new BorderLayout());
    JSlider slider= new JSlider(JSlider.HORIZONTAL,0,imw,25);
    slider.setMinorTickSpacing(10);
    slider.setMajorTickSpacing(100);
    slider.setPaintTicks(true);
    slider.setPaintLabels(true);
    JButton redraw= new JButton("Scroll");
    redraw.addActionListener(new ActionListener(){
    public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent ev){
    reDraw(slider,img,buf,biCon,imw,imh);
    add(slider,BorderLayout.CENTER);
    add(redraw,BorderLayout.AFTER_LINE_ENDS);
    public void reDraw(JSlider slid, Image im, BufferedImage bf, Graphics2D biC, int iw, int ih){
    value=slid.getValue();
    Graphics g= getGraphics();
    g.drawImage(im,value,0,iw,ih,this);
    g.drawImage(bf,value,0,iw,ih,this);
    biC.drawImage(bf,value,0,iw,ih,this);
    Any ideas???
    THanks,
    Rick

    Its getting them from another class thats calling the mothod to construct the slider bar with dedraw button. Thats a pretty big class but I will post the code where I called the method:
    public class Process extends JFrame implements MouseListener, MouseMotionListener{
    private int [][] points;
    private int [] lengths={0};
    private int [] bin;
    private String imstr;
    private String imsav;
    private int imgw=658;
    private int imgh=512;
    private int xArrayPos=0;
    private int yArrayPos=0;
    private int xpos=0;
    private int ypos=0;
    private int xprev;
    private int yprev;
    private int xadd;
    private int yadd;
    private String filstr;
    Image image;
    SimpleGUI gui;
    BufferedImage buffer;
    Graphics2D biContext;
    Graphics2D g2;
    BufferedImage last;
    Graphics2D lastContext;
    public Process(){
    JFrame slideFrame = new JFrame("Please slide to scroll image");
    slideFrame.setContentPane(new SliderExample(imgw, imgh,image,buffer,biContext));
    slideFrame.pack();
    slideFrame.setVisible(true);
    Thats what anything having to do with that function in the other class that calls the Slider Class.
    Do you know how I can fix this??
    Thanks,
    Rick

    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: StdInThat means that you are using a class (StdIn), that is not on your classpath, but in some other place.
    The "-cp ." tells Java to ignore the CLASSPATH variable and just look in the current directory instead. You probably had the location of StdIn on your CLASSPATH variable.
    What you need to do in this case is to add the current directory "." to your CLASSPATH variable.
    Go [learn about the Classpath here|http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/technotes/tools/windows/classpath.html].

    I bought my iPhone 4s in the Uk and then brought to Cyprus where I live. I used Siri to call my husband 2 days ago without problem but now when I try to use Siri it won't call any local Cypriot number but will call my Uk contacts. I can call the same numbers manually so it's not my network. Any help would be appreciated.

    This sounds like an international issue? Although I can not see why? I brought my phone in Australia and operating it in Indonesia, I have the same issues.... Otherwise Siri works fine, even texting (SMS) to local numbers siri works well, but dialing local number it just wont work...! I will try using my Australian SIM card and see if that is the reason.. I tried changing the number in the contacts and took out the international prefix, I turned the international assist on and off still nothing.. How frustrating. I called apple, the technican had know idea and we to his supervisor, had to wait fro 40 miuntes and then I hung up..
    PLEASE HELP..!
