  • You Should Be Ashamed

    To the Adobe Help Team:
    You should be ashamed.
Like many others I recently upgraded my CS6 suite. Much to my surprise when I installed the upgrade I was met with a completely re-written and broken HELP system.
Any attempt to access the help through one of the Creative Suite applications resulted in the following messages:
    • Adobe Help Viewer is not installed and you are not connected to the Internet…
(all while I’m online AND searching through your forums for a fix)
    • The tutorials require the Online help files installed with this product. You may need to re-install the help files.
    (Re-installed the program twice - didn’t help).
I then tried to install the community help files from your online download links and received the following error message:
    Sorry, an error has occurred.
This application cannot be installed because the installer has been misconfigured. Please contact the application author for assistance.
HUH? All downloadable links for help are misconfigured?
I then called tech. support. and after spending close to 2 hours on the phone with no resolution, I spent a further 7 hours of my own time to resolve this issue.
This included repeatedly updating the AIR application from your site.
Unfortunately nothing I did worked except when I launched the application “acrobat.com”. It asked me to update AIR and after doing so I was then able to connect to your online help from all the Creative Suite application except Flash.
Unfortunately then the ‘acrobat.com’ application then wouldn’t work, telling me I needed to update it but the download repeatedly failed with an error message #16820.
So please - tell me how is it that the current download for AIR you make available to your customers doesn’t work? And the one associated with ‘acrobat.com’ does?
How could you release a suite of applications without proper help? People spend thousands of dollars on your products and should be entitled to receive the complete software - including help. Having your PDF manuals available one month later is a slap in the face to your customers.
Flash wasn’t even connected to the online help - you had to release an immediate update to resolve this.
And where are all the welcome screens? They are missing from several of the apps.
    Who did the beta testing?
Just who is in charge over there?
Now, let’s examine the AIR framework. This is a glitchy, problematic application. Always has been.
To start, there is no PDF “Read Me” supplied with the install to alert one to the changes to the HELP application. So to have an application launch, then disappear is confusing.  And to have to dig through the adobe site to find this ‘read me’ (buried in the forum no less) is ridiculous.
And if you launch it on your own, it takes forever to do so - appearing first as the corner of the window, then a interminable spinning beach ball and then finally the useless application window.
The new interface is horrible. Everything is grouped together so it’s very hard to identify and choose what you need. Further, nothing is actually available - it’s only entries for javascripts that (I assume) reference the online help. Although why these need to be 22.7MB beats me. And EVERYTHING is greyed out with no access anyway.
Just who thought it was good idea for users to see these background scripts?
And finally, in updating this AIR service it knocked out access to all previous local help. So I can no longer access my local help for earlier version of the Creative Suites (CS4, 5). Instead now I connect ONLY to your online help which is terrible. No way to bookmark anything, highlight anything, search effectively. Shame on you.
Can you explain why in updating the help system to something that doesn’t work you also destroyed that which did work?
Can you explain why your ‘help team’ thought it was a good idea to only give it’s customers online help? What about people who need help who aren’t connected to the internet?
And why if the help wasn’t ready - why wouldn’t you link the various creative suite applications’ help directly to the web instead of launching an ill-coded, useless AIR application? Surely if this is the 'bridge' application - code it so it works in the background and doesn't appear to confuse everyone.
You released an incomplete and broken product. It is not up to your customers to spend their time researching, testing and fixing things only to alert you to what is apparent at first use.
Help is a fundamental segment of the product and part of what we paid for.
    So I repeat:
    Who did the beta testing?
Just who is in charge over there?
Does the word ‘deadline’ and ‘release date’ hold any value for you?
    Shame on you…
    cindy

You guys are becoming a joke. No basic help files in your software? GENIUS! I'm a freelance digital artist and I'm spreading the word about Adobe's new policy toward customers: "screw 'em". Does Adobe promote people with the most radical ideas, even if those ideas are the
    stupidest and most misconceived?
I can imagine the meeting for the CS6 dev team:
    ------------ begin scene ------------
A corporate board room, much like the one in which that annoying paperclip in Microsoft Office was concieved. This is a room for BIG IDEAS. This is a pit where simple solutions to obvious problems go to die - a safe place wheren the criminally stupid devise convoluted douchery to un-solve problems.
TEAM LEADER: "We'll give them a help button (snicker) and when they attempt to get help, not only do we deny them, we spit in their face with an inscrutable message."
FIRST BOOT LICKER: "Yeah. Yeah boss."
TEAM LEADER: "And when they go online to find help for Adobe Help (snicker), make sure to provide nothing but another inscrutable message: 'in June you will receive help'. Now that's how you keep a moron in suspense. The icing on the cake is the perpetual 'Pending Download' message in Adobe Help Manager. Our Division of Wasting User's Time really appreciated that touch."
FIRST BOOT LICKER: "Brilliant.  You're too awesome to have your BIG IDEAS sullied by the petty needs of customer's who pay money for our products."
TEAM LEADER: "Quiet! I'm having an epiphany. Something about clouds - and jamming up the Internet with petabytes of garbage."
FIRST BOOT LICKER (with religious awe): "THE CLOUD. We already have product evangelists! This is the next step!"
    -------------- end of scene ---------------
Update local help files and stop trying to UN-invent the wheel. The cloud is crap and I know this from experience. Instead of pulling info off my hard drive, I've got to pull it from half a world away. Really?! Who could've permitted such pie-in-the-sky BS to get so far. Come back down to earth where the rest of us actually have work to do and deadlines to make.
    Sincerly,
    Mike.

  • YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES - FLASH WILL NOT INSTALL UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES

Does anyone from Adobe support read this forum??? Adobe Flash will NOT install on a Mac. It hangs at either 95% or 97% depending on which download link is followed. IT WILL NOT FINISH THE INSTALL. I have uninstalled and tried SIX installs - back to back - and it stalls. IT WILL NOT COMPLETE THE INSTALL. You have been aware of this problem for months and have not fixed the installer. I BOUGHT A MAC, NOT ADOBE FLASH, but I am forced to use it. SO FIX IT!!!!!!

Where is your source of the phone being a problem? Just curious, I hear the opposite.
When mine updated yesterday, mine ran a bit 'clunky'. I simply pulled the battery, replaced powered up and never a problem sense. And I was on it ALOT last night as many people wanted to see it compared to an iPhone another had sitting next to me.
Hardly scientific, but aside for the iPhone owner, all liked the Incredible better.

  • Buying a contract free phone from Verizon (HTC DROID DNA)

    Hi,
I apologize if this is the wrong place to post this, but I cannot find answer to this question. I live in Europe (Croatia) but in a month I'l visit NYC. While I'm there my plan was to buy HTC DROID DNA from Verizon as a contract free phone. As it is a Global Network phone will it work with my own network carrier and sim card back in Europe?
    Thanks in advance

The DNA will work on the following GSM/UMTS network frequencies (per the DNA info page), if your carrier uses one of these you should be good.
    Global Network: GSM (850MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz, 1900MHz), UMTS (850MHz,
    900MHz, 1900MHz, 2100MHz)
    Good luck.

  • Things to know before building a Mega 651 (and other things you should know afte

Okay, following hot on the heels of the "things to know" series on Mega 180 and 865, I thought I'd just chip in with this short post on what you should know before splashing out on a nice budget Mega 651
    PROCESSOR SUPPORT:
The official list of supported CPUs can be found here:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/slim_pc/slm/pro_slm_cpu_support_detail.php?UID=431&kind=4
Basically the ageing SiS651 chipset does not support Celeron / P4 cpus above 533mhz, and does NOT support the newer "Prescott" core cpus
    Celeron > 400Mhz FSB
    P4 Northwood > 533mhz FSB (512kb L2 cache)
    MEMORY:
Basically to add to what is listed in the 865 "things to know"; from my own experience of using MSI motherboards in the past, ALWAYS use good quality branded memory, as using cheaper "generic" types inevitably leads to major problems. I know for a fact that Crucial, Kingston and Samsung types work well in MSI motherboards, and you should be okay with other high-end brands like Corsair and Geil.
    DRIVERS:
DON'T bother using MSI LiveUpdate! The drivers provided on the cd supplied will work, but if you wish to download the latest drivers, you will find them here:
    http://download.sis.com/
    Download and install the:
Chipset Software > SiS AGP (Gart) Driver
IGP Graphics Drivers > SiS650 and 740 series
    http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dlac97-2.aspx?lineid=5&famid=12&series=8&Software=True
    for Realtek AC97 Audio drivers
    http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloads1-3.aspx?lineid=1&famid=3&series=16&Software=True
    For Realtek Onboard Network interface
The modem drivers supplied on the CD should work, I really don't know much about them as I have never used them (sorry). Failing that, if you are connected to the internet, Windows Update should be able to find them for you.
    OPERATING SYSTEM SUPPORT
MSI state that only Windows XP is supported on Mega 651 (and other Mega barebones). Other versions of Windows (98, ME, 2000) will work provided you have drivers for hardware devices, all of which are provided on the install CD or from the links supplied above.
You'll find that earlier versions of Windows won't have the drivers for the built-in card reader, so you may have to do a "google" search to get them. On my Mega 651, they are listed in Device Manager as "OEI-USB" devices.
If you haven't already got Windows XP then I suggest you consider upgrading at the earliest opportunity; Microsoft themselves no longer support Win 98 / ME and most new software is being designed to work only with Windows XP
Please note that MSI do NOT supply or support drivers for Linux; if you wish to attempt to install Linux on a Mega 651 (or other Mega PC model) you will need to obtain drivers yourself. The remote and LCD display functions will also not be available under Linux, unless some clever bod has developed drivers to do so.
    MEGA RADIO AND LCD DISPLAY:
Download the Mega LiveUpdate for Mega 651 from here:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/software/swr/spt_swr_detail.php?UID=431&kind=4
This will update your MEGA Radio program, update the BlueBird HIFi module firmware and allow you to set a "greeting" displayed on the LCD display when you switch on HiFi mode. Apart from that the LCD display serves NO other purpose in PC mode.
After updating the firmware, you should power off your Mega 651, unplug the mains power cord for a few seconds then reconnect and restart for changes to take place.
    OTHER MSI SOFTWARE:
If you REALLY must try out MSI Media Center III, it does work on the Mega 651, but I don't think the remote will work correctly.
Although PCAlert 4 has been reported to work on the Mega 651 - having read the numerous problems most users have, I don't advise installing it. If you do get it to work correctly, unlike on the Mega 180 and 865, it will not display temps or fan speeds on the LCD display, as this feature only works on the 180 and 865, as they use diferent LCD displays.
    EXPANSION CARDS:
Same as with other Megas, you get 1 AGP and 1 PCI slot.
The AGP slot only supports up to 4x cards; a faster card will work, but only at 4x.
Space is limited, if you decide to fit a PCI TV tuner card, you will be limited as to which AGP card you can fit. A full length card is probably not recommended, and a model with a slimline (or even passive) heatsink would be best.
A better alternative would be to go for a VGA card with built in TV tuner, such as MSI TV5200-VTDF128 or an ATI Radeon All-In-Wonder card (ATI AIW is supported in WinXP MCE05)
    ON-BOARD VGA
The SiS651 chipset is pretty old now, and the on-board SiS650 VGA is not up to playing any of the latest games, as it is only DirectX 7.0 compliant and does not support Hardware Texture & Lighting. However, it is adequate for playing back DVDs as it supports hardware acceleration (in PowerDVD for example), and general video output is decent. The maximum shared video memory size is 64mb.
The Mega 651 does NOT feature TV-out as standard. You can however either buy an AGP video card which includes TV-out feature, or the Mega TV-out card (availble in UK from www.dabs.com). Please note, this card is ONLY for Mega 651, and does NOT work with the 865 model. (The 180 does however, thanks to nforce2 chipset, support TV-out as standard)
    ON-BOARD AUDIO
The Realtek ALC650 AC97 audio codec offers 5.1 surround sound (with suitable speakers of course  ) as well as SP-DIF for digital output.
The sound quality is quite reasonable; i'm currently listening to MP3s through a set of Creative Inspire 5.1 speakers, and its certainly good enough for me.
There are three audio connectors on the rear, they default to:
    GREEN - Front speakers
    BLUE - Line In
    PINK - Mic
To connect surround sound speakers correctly, you need to use the Realtek audio configuration tool (located in the Taskbar by the clock). Set the speaker config to 4 or 6 channel (5.1) and then click on the boxes to the right to configure the rear ports correctly
    GREEN - Front speakers
    BLUE - Rear Speakers
PINK - Subwoofer / Centre Speaker
NOTE: If you do decide you want to install a PCI soundcard, be aware that you will lose the Radio function in PC mode, and for audio output in Hi-Fi mode you will need to reconnect audio plugs from your soundcard to onboard sockets. The Hi-Fi mode and Radio only work with the onboard audio.
    POWER SUPPLY
All the Mega series barebones come with a 200w PSU. Don't even think about upgrading to a higher output type, as the Mega PSU is a non-standard type. A standard ATX PSU will NOT physically fit inside the Mega case. Besides which, the Mega series have a special connector which powers the Bluebird hi-fi module and on-board sound when the PC is off. And there is a special Molex power connector for the CD/DVD drive, also for that to be used when PC is off.
    WINDOWS XP MCE 2005
Media Center 2005 requires a DirectX 8.1 / 9.0 compliant video card with a minimum of 64mb RAM, 128mb RAM is recommended, however, for best performance. So you will need an AGP card, because SiS do not provide any MCE-compatible drivers. The TV@anywhere TV tuner (MS8606-10) and Mega TV Tuner (MS8606-40) are not supported by MCE05, because MCE2005 requires a TV card that will provide a direct MPEG2 stream, which a PVR card such as the Hauppage PVR MCE series can do (as a hardware card, MSIs card are software only and rely on drivers to do MPEG encoding), or a dedicated DVB-T card which receives an MPEG2 signal over the air.
    MEGA 651 REMOTE
If you fit an MSI TV@anywhere card to your Mega 651, the Mega remote can be used to control the MSIPVS software, providing you use the remote receiver supplied with the TV@nywhere card. The Mega remote is designed to work natively with the MSI Media Center, and MSI Mega Radio programs only.
If you wish to program the remote to operate other programs within windows, then you will need a program called Girder, and the accompanying MSI plugin, kindly provided by nathan. please see his sticky thread for more info, about his plugin, and how to obtain Girder.

  • My HTC Droid Eris rant, maybe you can help, maybe someone with some power will read

Alright I've got a new HTC Droid on the way, for the next 2 days I have a phone I can use the internet and check my email on, but the most basic cell phone functions I can no longer use, send/receive both calls and messages.
I'll get into the problems that lead me to do a hard reset on my phone today later, we'll start there.
So I've read about doing a hard reset and how it fixes a lot of problems.  So I prepared today not knowing what would happen really.  Backed up my photos and contacts and had at it.  Turns out I didn't need to back those up.
So everything goes alright, it calls Verizon to activate my phone, says everything went fine.  No calls or text messaging.  But I've got internet and gmail. I get an error message when trying to send texts, and I get a verizon recording saying "We can't authenticate your phone."
Take it in to the Verizon store, they can't figure it out either, so they order me a new phone.
The greeter gal was the most helpful really, she asked me if I did a *228, I didn't know what it was cause the phone called to activate by itself.  So later I tried that wondering if it was something different.  I tried the second option activating roaming.  Didn't work.
So right now as I'm typing this I got the battery out, we'll see if that works.
Alright here's my laundry list of complaints:
It's slow, even for the most basic things like making a call or text messaging.  I understand it's not a very fast processor compared to other phones but for basic things it shouldn't struggle.  Hell even the calculator lags.
The messaging program sucks.  Well since the update I see they finally made it so it can play animated gifs.  But where to begin with this,  well first you can't delete messages.  It locks up.  Second if you don't want to delete a whole thread, you can't go through and select all the ones you want to delete, and mass delete, no you have to hold down everyone you want to delete, till the screen pops up, click delete, wait, and go to the next one.
If that wasn't time consuming enough, wait till you get a picture message with multiple attachments.   No it can't play it like regular phones, this is a droid dammit!  We have to be innovative and make it so you click on the attachments button, and it brings up a screen that lists all the attachments!  Then when you find the one you want, you can't simply just click it to view it, no we give you another pop up that gives you options, to view, or save the attachment!  I mean regular phones you could save the attachments while you're viewing them, but droid gives you options before hand, then after all the lag to load and exit the attachment, you get to start all over to look at the next one! (Handcent fixed a lot of the problems I had with the messaging but it loses multiple attachments so I end up going back to regular messaging to look at them)
Gmail on your phone!  Only thing that sucks about this is google saves every person you have correspondence with through gmail as a friggin contact.  At least I can delete them off my phone, time consuming and annoying, I still haven't figured out how to delete them off actual gmail.
Facebook!  Hey if google contacts wasn't bad enough, in this connected day and age, when you type in a name to call or send a text message to, it searches facebook friends too!  And its really fun when your friends have old numbers listed on their facebook account and you call it and it's some 80 year old guy named herbert who says he'll dress in pig tails and be Jessica if I want.
I use Gmail, I use Facebook, but I do not need these to be a part of my contacts for my calling and texting in any way!
The silent phone issues.  Mine has gotten worse lately.
The one thing I didn't mind, the browser, well attention is in the details, and they made one thing super annoying now.  I liked browsing craigslist on my phone, most browsers for computers, you click the back button, it returns you to the point in the page you were at, oh no, not droid, it takes you to some point in the page it feels like going back to when you click back.  Which is annoying when you're zoomed in trying to go down a list.  Either fix this or make it so you can just open links in new tabs.
I've been searching online for solutions to these problems if you got any please fill me in.  And before I send this, I put the battery back in, booted it up, still not able to make calls or send messages.

Firstly, your device authentication issue has absolutely nothing to do with your device. Even a Knack can get that error. In a nutshell, your device authenitication needs to be updated and a quick call to tech support can fix that. It takes 35 seconds to resolve that issue once you get through.
Second, need some tissues? The Eris is an entry level phone. Don't like the included messaging app? Download Handcent. Or Chomp. You are really being overly whiney and will probably not be happy with another Droid device either. All devices need some set up, optimization, and guess what, basic user knowledge. Sounds like you never even bothered to crack the manual or seek out help.
And yes, I do own an Eris.

  • If you receive the HTC Droid Incredible Froyo update, please post here.

It is August 18th and we all know the rumors said we would get Froyo today on our  Incredibles. If you receive the HTC Droid Incredible Froyo update, please post here so those of us waiting will know that the update is starting to download. It should be downloading by batches of phones. Once we know it has started, at least we'll all know it's then just going to be a short time until we are in an update batch.

My wife had the update waiting when she checked her phone at 9am this morning, I'm still waiting.
She's got a 917 area code and I'm 646.  Her phone's paid by a corporate account while mine is tied to a different larger corporate account, but it is my personal phone that I pay for.
I've got my phone about a month before her and have been a longer VZW customer, so no idea what the distribution order is.

  • Verizon you ****.

REALLY Verizon? REALLY? I "almost" upgraded earlier this week.... the salesperson was
actually RIGHT in the MIDDLE of switching my service to the new phone, when he
mentions, oh and there's a $30 upgrade charge too. WHAT? ARE YOU ********
KIDDING ME? I'm due for an upgrade, in fact ALL THREE of my lines are due for
upgrades....he informs me, this is a brand new charge JUST instituted 2 DAYS
AGO! I made him stop and REVERSE the WHOLE thing. I walked out of there with my
old phone and service. You STUPID ******, can you NOT see that having a loyal
customer that is willing to sign up for a GUARANTEED TWO MORE YEARS is WAY more
financially productive for you than a ridiculous and UNnecessary $30 upgrade fee
FOR EVERY LINE I want to upgrade. I do NOT care if "every other provider is
doing it" (so do NOT spout that rhetoric, just DON'T go there), I'm your
customer (for now)  and you are NOT showing that you appreciate me AT ALL.
This is an OUTRAGE and blatant disrespect to your customers. I should NOT
be punished for wanting to continue to subscribe to YOUR SERVICE much less for
wanting to practically guarantee you ANOTHER TWO years of monthly income from
me. It's such a slap in the face, you should be thanking me for my YEARS of
loyalty and patronage. Why SHOULDN'T I disconnect ALL THREE of my lines and
become a customer of ANOTHER provider who appreciates me? The whole  "2 year
upgrade" was suppose to be an incentive to do JUST THAT, sign up for another 2
years, NOW it's a detriment to consider singing up for ANY more time with
    Verizon.

Boy, as a figure of speech and no disrespect intended at all... I feel you on this one. Way to voice your opinion, as a loyal customer. It's amazing how being a long time customer doesn't seem to matter anymore. Doesn't the CEO's get it. No they don't, cause most of them sit behind a large desk wearing the silk tie and eating the high dollar meals. The local sales office do as their told, as instructed by the upper management team. Their wages are far less than management.  Customer service reps are getting screamed at daily, for doing their job. That is the bottom line of customer service, no matter what industry.  I do know this from working in customer service all my life. Rules can be managed based on customer loyalty.  A good customer service rep has the abiltiy to override or get approval for such a concession. Don't let them fool you. It just depends if that individual wants to work on your behalf or not. Yes we have many choices where we can take our business and where to spend our hard earned money, but will the next company or provider really care or give a better service. Maybe, and possibly not. It's just a shame when all of us are trying to provide our families with all the resources of life and some, not all creditor/providers, could care less. Most of the time it isn't the customer service rep to are dealing with in the local store. They are only following through with the upper management. I feel the pain as you do and the only way we can reach resolve, is to team up as a community and make the CEO and other upper management  team be accountable. Let them have to be made to reduce their salary, give up designer suits and the lifestyles, roll up their sleeves and work in the field offices for a month and truly appreciate, the position and blessing they take for granted.  I hope you are given a better deal with your renewal. One can only hope for small gifts for being a valued customer. We as consumers do have choices. Have a great day everyone and happy election with all your decisions, for they all belong to you.

  • Reasons you SHOULD buy a MacBook

Hey, let's face it, the MacBook is destined to be an excellent product. Name one Apple that was a Lemon... c'mon, I dare you
So, to debunk the myth that everyone who goes to forums is there to get help or vent about problems, I would like to take a moment to list a few reasons why you SHOULD buy a MacBook. Mine is perfect, and has been through heavy use for 3 months now. It shows no sign of being anything but perfect. Here is my list, please feel free to add:
    1. OSX - the best OS that ever was. A beautiful blend of Unix and Style, two things that have never come together so well before.
    2. Style - don't kid yourself, Apple has loyalty because they are stylish. They have class, and everyone knows it... why fight it?
    3. Quality - Apple engineers are among the best in the world. Attention to detail wins them awards time and again.
    4. Support - When something does go wrong Apple won't leave you in the dust. Apple customers gladly pay more because they get more. If you have a problem, they will take care of you. Period. Don't believe be? Try it. Be calm, expect the best, and you'll get it.
    5. Determination - Apple as a company has a history of determination, and that history goes into every product they make. Now, with Intel, you have two companies with a history of hard-as-steel determination working for you. Both have top notch customer support and loyalty- for a reason. Which brings me to...
    6. Intel Inside - They are #1 because they are the best. Time and again, they prove it. They are in the top of the list of the top most ethical companies in the U.S., unlike AMD (who isn't on the list at all). They will carry Apple through.
I didn't switch to Apple until they started using Intel processors, and now I have no reason NOT to use apple.
    BUY a MacBook
    ENJOY the difference
IF you have problems, take it back
IF you are unsatisfied with Apple, tell them, and give them a chance to make you happy.

After reading the many, many posts on the problems, I was skeptical about switching to the MB from my trusty orange clamshell iBook with a blazing 333Mhz. I was somewhat concerned when I read a survey (I believe it was at the MacIntouch site)that MacBooks had an average of 13% experiencing the random shudowns in various circumstances.
I thought, "what the heck", the odds are pretty much in my favor--so after much deliberation I went ahead and made the purchase last week.
I salivated for a week awaiting the new arrival, and I tell you, I was not disappointed. Talk about a great machine, especially stepping up from a clamshell iBook!
Then the other shoe fell: random shutdowns began less than 24 hours after receiving it. I really was beside myself with anger. The one smart thing I did was to exactly document the times and events of the shutdowns.
With the information in hand I called Apple and talked to a technician for about an hour and tried several of her suggestions: 1) pull the battery, 2) reseat the memory, 3) upgrade to 10.4.7. These suggestions seemed like a godsend, but I still insisted she assign me a case number in case they didn't work.
I was off and running again. But wouldn't you know it, more shutdowns. I called AppleCare and had my situation quickly handled. The new specialist went over my situation and could see there was a definite problem. He offered to have my MB repaired or replaced. I opted for the replacement, which should be here in a few days.
Bottom line: Apple will take care of it's own. Just make sure to get an extended AppleCare warranty and carefully document any problems you run into.
Though I'm a few days from getting an MB back, I've tasted what real power looks, feels and sounds like. I will continue to be a loyalist, as I have been for nearly 25 years. Go Apple!

    Good morning
I am trying to upgrade my iPhone via my macbook but the following message keeps coming up and the download does not work
"There are purchased items on the iPhone “Mark Price’s iPhone” that have not been transferred to your iTunes library. You should transfer these items to your iTunes library before updating this"
Please advise how I can transfer these files, I am not sure what files are in question.
I've only had the MacBook a couple of days, I am PC savvy but this is all new to me so please keep it as simple as possible. I am a brit based in Bahrain.
    Regards
    Mark Price

okay I've done everything regarding the transfer process (via file>transfer purchases) and syncing, so everything on my iPhone device seems to have been transferred to my iMac... however, I still get that message ("There are purchased items on the iPhone..."), trying to upgrade the iOS Have tried several times the same process of hitting transfer purchases via file, but nothing seems to make that message go away! Would have been nice to know which files I actually do need to transfer, which I don't get any info on of course...
Starting to get really annoying this thing.. Any smart suggestions what's going on?

I have recently switched from MobileMe to iCloud and I now getting an error message in iCal :
"The server is currently unable to handle the connection due to a temporary overloading or maintenance of the server. If this continues you should contact the server administrator.
You may try to connect to the server again or take the account offline."
Since I am working from home and I am not on a server other than iCloud I don't understand why I am getting this message. (for 3 days). How do I fix it?

    TomCT60,
Is your MacBook using Mac OS X 10.6.8 as indicated in your post? If so you will not be able to fully integrate with iCloud.
iCloud and Snow Leopard, by Roger Wilmut describes what iCloud options are available for Snow Leopard.
If you are using Lion, go to iCal>Preferences...>Accounts, and delete/re-add your iCloud CalDAV server.

  • !Important! You should backup your new computer (or your old one!)

As a Geek Squad Ask an Agent representive, I recieve plenty of calls. One of the questions I invariably have to ask is 'Do you have your recovery DVD's?' and the answer is always 'No.. doesn't the computer come with them?'
Macintosh computers (that's Apple) *do* in most cases come with OS recovery DVD's. PC's - which include popular brands such as ASUS, Dell, HP, Toshiba, etc - do NOT come with OS Recovery DVD's (in most cases).
    What are Recovery DVD's?
Recovery DVD's are a copy of your system's OS, or Operating System. In most cases, this is Windows 7. You'll notice you have a sticker on the side, back or bottom of your PC/Laptop with your licence key. You don't need this, but this states you own the copy of Windows 7, so you're free to back it up for your machine.
The backup proccess also makes a copy of most of the programs you install on the machine. If you have a lot of programs, MP3's, or video files already installed, it'll use more DVD's.
For instructions on how to backup, refer to this Microsoft Document:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Back-up-your-files
If you don't understand this, refer to this:
    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/4241/how-to-create-a-system-image-in-windows-7/
I would recommend an external hard drive for backup, *and* a between 4 to 7 DVD's for a 'doomsday' situation - such as cases where the recovery external hard drive is corrupt or has been infected by a virus. This rarely happens, but always be prepared!
If you take the hour or so it takes to complete the backup proccess, you will avoid the following scenarios:
    1. Paying money if there is a problem with your PC's software that causes it to freeze or crash. You can just go back to a 'restore point'.
    2. Paying money to remove virus's. Hey, you have a backup. Just use the recovery DVD to wipe the computer and reload it with an uninfected copy from that backup you made two days ago.
    3. Your computer or hard drive fails. Hey, you have a backup. When your machine is repaired, restore from backup and you've lost nothing.
    4. Someone comes and messes up your computer. Say, your 'computer genius nephew'. Restore to a previous day, and it's as if he had never come over!
    5. Random freezes and blue screens. Restore to FACTORY DEFAULT - if you create a system image when you first started the computer or near that time, you can restore to that point using the DVD's rather then the external hard drive. If the blue screens and freezes continue, it's much more likely to be a hardware problem then a software problem, which means you should bring it into the nearest Best Buy for a hardware diagnosis and possible warranty repair.
The most important reason for spending this time to back up is PEACE OF MIND.

Additionally, some HP computers do not have recovery partitions, or those recovery partitions may become corrupt/unusable. Therefore, creating a DVD recovery set is always the best option. To see if you have a recovery partition, navigate to START/COMPUTER and view if you have a secondary hard drive (labeled other then C:, usually D that is named 'Recovery, SYSTEM FILES' or similar.
