Versioning with index.html

Ok, I'm a noob, but not a dweeb, have tried several places searching on various search terms, including here, and am not finding the answer I'm looking for. Closest results deal with SVN, not what I need.
As a designer, I'm interested in versioning on my designs, i.e., to reach a satisfactory point, then venture with new elements, but having saved off a new version to make it easier to step back.
Someone mentioned this was easy in Dw, to simply, for example, save off an 'index02.html,' and all the file links would carry over, and then in the Files panel, one could specify it as the index file for the site (since I saw a mod ask it on another thread, I will just mention that I do create separate folders within my root folder for each site/exercise to keep them in good order).
Since I'm finding an apparent dearth of resources on this, could someone please verify/validate the step/s for this, and/or share any best practices around this?
I'm all ears.

Hi
The simplest way is the one hinted at in your post index02.html. But i would make this indexdate.html so that you know the date you created the version, (this would give you index21july11.html using today's date).
Using 'save as' from the files menu will update any links to external files, (css/images/JavaScript) when saving for you, providing that you are using one of your previous versions as the source.

  • Problem with index.html.  Help!

    I am having a problem with the index.html. In iWeb my site looks perfect. When I publish it to a folder and then open the index certain media is missing but just on one page.
    I have tried deleting the published site from the folder and re-publishing but nothing seems to work. Same result...
    Even more interesting, I uploaded the site almost a month ago and everything was fine until I noticed last week that my pics on one page had been completely erased. What could cause the change? I didn't upload a new version of the site.

    Please provide your url so we can see what is happening.
    The index.html file plays no role in what you are describing.

  • Adobe Bridge issue with index.html files

    Hi, I have a perplexing problem.... Three weeks ago, I created a web photo gallery in Bridge. I transferred it to my website via FTP and it worked like a charm. Three days later I created another web gallery transferred it to my website using my ftp and the address of what I uploaded takes me to a blank page. I contacted my web hosting support and was told it looks like an issue with my index.html file. Here is a link to the gallery that is working: www.janieblanchard/com/galleries/prettylights/index.html
    Here is the link to the site that is not working:
    www.janieblanchard.com/galleries/macrogallery/index.html
    Any advice would be so helpful, I've spend too many hours trying different galleries and uploading multiple times.
    Thanks!

  • Problems with index.html

    When I first started using dreamweaver mx 2004 I created my
    site in what I now think might be the wrong way but that was what
    the books that I was using at the time said to do.
    I created a site folder and then I created the homepage. I
    then created two more folders inside the site folder, one called
    text_copy and one called images_copy (in a different website I
    created everything inside the main site folder-images,homepage and
    text files all live together).
    This original method of separating everything has come back
    to haunt me.
    Dreamweaver wants your homepage called index.html and when I
    type in my domain-
    dimension x toys
    the homepage comes up. But the problem is none of the
    javascript pull down menus that I have created work on the
    homepage. They work on all of the other pages in the site but not
    this one. I created another page called index and set it inside the
    main text_copy folder. This page-
    index2
    has the pull downs work but it cannot be accessed as the
    homepage.
    Is the only alternative to
    1. re-create the entire site
    2. move all the information from the other folders out into
    the main folder.
    I hope there is a solution with what I currently have because
    the website is a lot of pages. Option 2 is less work but all of the
    links to the other files and images would be broken and it still
    while less, would be a considerable amount of work as I have a
    great many pages to the website.
    Thank you for your time.
    harlan1s

    you have to change the paths for the root level index page.
    The links won't
    have the same relative path as the ones that are in the
    subfolder.
    did you just copy/paste the menu onto the index page from a
    page in the
    subfolder? Or do a "save as"?
    Look in the head section of the code.
    The sections of javascript that start with mm_menu are the
    instructions for
    how that menu works.
    mm_menu_1215135054_0.addMenuItem("13 INCH FIGURES","location='../t
    ext_copy/batman13family.html'");
    for the root level homepage index.html file, that link should
    be:
    mm_menu_1215135054_0.addMenuItem("13 INCH FIGURES","location='text
    _copy/batman13family.html'");
    Look at the location= part.
    notice i took out ../
    and actually- for the menu on pages IN the text_copy folder
    linking to other
    pages IN the text_copy folder- the correct relative path
    would be:
    mm_menu_1215135054_0.addMenuItem("13 INCH FIGURES","location='batm
    an13family.html'");
    There's no need to go Up a folder, then go down into the same
    current
    folder.
    another way to do it, so it's the same on all the pages,
    would be to use the
    full absolute http path.
    mm_menu_1215135054_0.addMenuItem("13 INCH FIGURES","location='http
    ://www.dimensionxtoys.com/text_copy/batman13family.html'");
    note- those menus have problems and are a maintenence
    nightmare. A menu
    built from tutorials and free extensions at
    http://projectseven.com would
    make life easier and work better.

  • Trouble with Index.html

    The site is designed with Adobe Muse. When I upload it to a hosting site the index.html page appears different and the images do not link. When I open the index.html on my computer it looks fine, but the minute it's uploaded it changes. I thought it was Yahoo - www.amydealdesign.com and so I made a change to Go Daddy www.amydeal.com - same thing. Why aren't the images linking?

    It appears that your images haven't been uploaded to your webhost.
    How are you uploading your site?
    If you publish to a temporary Business Catalyst site, Muse will upload all the required files.
    If you use the 'upload to FTP host' command from Muse, it should upload everything you need.
    If you export to a local folder and upload using a 3rd party FTP client, be sure to upload everything in the export folder, include the 'images', 'assets' and 'scripts' subfolders.

  • Main.html to index.html

    Hi there, I'm in a bit of a rush to get my website up and running, and I have published the site through Flash Catalyst and uploaded the final site to my website server.
    Flash Catalyst publishes the final website as Main.html so I renamed it to index.html for the server to recognise, but the site doesn't seem to load.
    Is there a way for Catalyst to publish with index.html instead of main.html
    Thanks
    Arvind!

    yeah the website is:
    www.sondproductions.com
    But now I have another problem, when you first load the website, the centre cube swf file starts on the right hand side of the screen and not in the centre.
    When the swf animation finishes then it switches back to the centre, I dont suppose you know why this do you?

  • Caching problem with iFS web server / index.html

    There seems to be a problem with the iFS Java web server serving cached index.html documents after they have been modified.
    This only happens when the document is referenced by the folder name (e.g. /home/kennu/). If you reference it by the full name (/home/kennu/index.html), the new modified version comes up alright.
    I wonder if this is a bug or some kind of a feature? Is there an quick and easy workaround?
    Byt the way, is this the correct place to post bug reports? I didn't see iFS mentioned in the OTN Bug Database.

    well, this is certainly not an intended effect. i'll look into it. in the meantime, the workaround already posted should pull you through.
    sorry about the inconvenience.

  • Need help with creating template. Changes are not going through to index.html page

    Hi all,
    I have an issue with my template that I am creating and also a question about creating template Regions (Repeating and Editable).
    Somehow my changes to my index.dwt are not changing my index.html page.
    Also my other question is: For my top navigation bar and left navigation bar links, do I need to select and define each individual button or link as Repeating/Editable Region? or can I just select the whole navigation bar (the one on the top) etc...
    Below are my steps for creating my template...I am kinda fairly new to using DW and this is my first attempt to making a template following the DW tutorial CD that came with DW CS3.
    I appreciate any help with this...regards, Dano
    -Open my index.html file
    -File/save as template
    -Save
    -update links - yes
    -Select Repeating and Editable Regions (I selected the whole top navigation bar and selected Repeating Region and Editable Region, same with the left side navigation links)
    -File close all
    -Open the index.dwt
    -Save as and selected the index.html and chose to overide it..
    When I make changes to my index.dwt it is not changing the index.html
    I feel that I am missing some important steps here.....

  • Index.html as a link not working with Weblogic 6.0 SP2

    we use weblogic as a webserver with one of our web applications.
              The index.html page is a soft link pointing to one of 2 pages.
              1 page is a site up page and the other is a site down page.
              Using a soft link worked fine with WL60 sp1 but when we moved to SP2
              we now get a 404 when trying to load the index.html page.
              Any ideas why this would be broken?

    Terry,
              This is a known problem, and CR058420 was opened to address this
              issue. For 6.0, there is not a patch available. The recommended
              solution is to upgrade to 6.1 and apply the appropriate patch.

  • LR HTML Web Gallery -- modified version with great features is available

    For anyone using the default Lightroom HTML Web Gallery, one of our associates here has offered a modified version with some great added features.
    John Beardsworth's site -- Lightroom Solutions - http://lightroomsolutions.com/ -- is a wonderful resource for LR tips, plug-ins, information, etc.
    The default HTML gallery is fine, but I always found it lacked features.  I mentioned this to Ian Lyons (http://www.computer-darkroom.com/) a couple of years ago, and he sent me a modified version with the ability to specify up to 100 rows by using sliders instead of the grid.  When I tried John's modified version, it had some other good features.  I thought.... what if the two modified versions could be combined?  So, I shot John an email, and low and behold, he uploaded a new version of the gallery to his site.  Thank you, Ian and John!
    Here is the link:
    http://lightroomsolutions.com/my-tweaked-built-in-html-gallery/
    Here are the added features that I find most useful:
    Number of rows (up to 100) and columns can be specified using sliders rather than the grid
    Thumbnail images can be sized to your specification
    Filename can be placed on each thumbnail, and you specify size of text
    Clicking the large image advances to the next image rather than returning to the top of the thumbnail page (no need to use the 'next' link)
    See the site for other added features.  (If you already have John's version, the newer version has the same file name and went online April 17, 2013.)
    PLEASE NOTE:  John Beardsworth's HTML gallery is NOT supported by John or Adobe, and is offered "as-is."
    I hope others will find this as useful and I have.
    John

    I've done a version of this where the large file links to the medium and it works no problem. code is based on tutorial code I've already written..
    I'd need to see more code to see where the issue might be..

    AddGridPages {
    template='grid.html',
    rows=model.nonCSS.numRows,
    columns=model.nonCSS.numCols,
    AddCustomCSS {
    filename='resources/css/custom.css',

  • Iweb and index.html won't work with ftp provider

    Hello all.
    I have been working on my new website using iweb 09 and I have had problems publishing it to My ftp provider. I have followed all the prompts to the end, but when I have published my site and go looking for it on Web using my URL , it says there is an error.
    I have been in touch with my host provider " Just Host" and this is the message they sent me ( I have copied and pasted it ):
    As I see all you have uploaded to the *login name* account is index.html.
    You have uploaded it incorrectly, to the root folder /login name/, whether index file and the rest of the site for www.mywebsite.com should be located in the /login name/public_html/ folder.
    I've moved the file to the proper folder and the site started showing up the error.
    Your index.html file is incorrect.
    What does this all mean? I went to the apple shop and they suggested using Mobile Me as this would not happen, but that does not suit me as I have just signed up for 4 years with Just Host and I'd like to use them. The apple shop also told me that iweb separates each page of the website and assigns an index.html to each folder for each page and they supposedly are all linked? From the above e-mail if I understand it correctly, this is not the case or do I have to do something for this to happen?
    I am at a total lost and having a melt down! Can any one out there help me in plain English as I am only new to all this and am only just getting familiar with the website terminologies? I have searched many forums and have had to look up hundreds of terms in " computer " dictionaries to understand what people are talking about. Please excuse my mental breakdown, as I am really worried that all this work I have put in will go down the chute.
    I'm sure you understand how frustrating it can be when something so simple becomes so difficult!
    Your help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you .
    Ben.

    Hello Ethmoid.
    Thank you for your response. I have attached this e-mail to both you and Wyodor as you have been both extremely helpful.
    I have managed to get my home page up thanks to your help, but for some reason now , it won't go to the following pages, about,products etc?
    As I have done a few web site practices ,I have read that sometimes Iweb has trouble distinguishing between the different sites published in my site or public folders. Could this be the problem? Do I need to delete my old sites?
    I tried to change the site name to another name but it won't allow me, every time I retype the new name it keeps jumping back to the extra www.etc.
    Also for some reason , all the boxes where my page headings are, they seem to be out of line and a different size even though on my desktop on iweb my front page has all the boxes the same size.
    Why is this?
    Once again thank you for your help.
    Ben

  • Help with new site index.html

    I'm new to website design/hosting/etc so I apologize for the newbie questions.  I'm using DW8
    I have a hobby site on a free host and have been using it for 2+ years without problems.  Recently I decided to re-design the website.  When I uploaded the new website in place of the old one the host kept saying that the file was not found.  So I re-loaded the old site and everything worked fine.  So just for kicks I uploaded the NEW index.html file in place of the old one, and again the website could not be found.
    So is there something actually wrong with my NEW index.html root file, or do I need to do something else in DW to upload a new site in place of an old one?  I have no idea what could be wrong with the new index file; I created it just like I did the old one.
    Thanks in advance, joel

    Before you upload next time click on Site->Advanced->FTP log.  See if you get any errors with that.
    If you are not and the files are uploading ok, you may need to get in touch with your host.  If something is not working on the account it could be something on their end, whether it be configuration errors or some other random occurrence.
