Very unstable application server on Linux : work process are dying

Hello,
SAP release : SAP R/3 Enterprise
Linux : x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Oracle : 9.2.0.7.0
Our production environnement consists of one Central Instance server (HP-UXia 64) and five application servers (Linux x86_64). All the application servers are exatly the same, same hardware, same OS, CPU, RAM ...etc
But only applications server "number 4" is giving us problems, it is not restarted automatically with the others servers, all the work processes appear in red in transaction sm51, the workprocesses (DIA,BGD,UPD) are dying one after another. Yesterday two workprocesses were stopped, then four, and this morning eight workprocecess
We don't have any performance problems :
each application server has 32Gb of physical memory ( 24Gb of physical free memory)
each applications erver 4 CPU (idle = 80%)
It doesn't seem to be an SAP problem.
At first we thought, ot was an OS issue, we desinstalled the applivcation server, and asked our system administrataros to reintall the OS, then we reintalled the application server.
But it didn't help, we're still facing the same problems.
Half of our workprocecesses are now stopped, the workprocesses log can not be utilized for analysis :
There is no information about what happened this morning :

Hi there,
Your physical memory is totally adequate. To make sure, you can check the buffer tune transaction ST04 for issues like swap.
Is the work process log you pasted here complete?? After restart of dialog instance, do all wp come up in Wait state?
Apart from work process logs, please check the system log for errors. Also, check the database connectivity from your app server.
regards, Sean.

  • Oracle Application Server On Linux Problem

Our client's application server has been live for 6 months now and currently there is an issue.
This server is a Dell 6850 running Red Hat Linux ES 3.4 (Taroon Update 5) and kernel 2.4.21-32 with 2 CPUs and 8Gb of ram. Our J2EE web application runs in Oracle Application Server and currently 5 OC4Js are up and running.
The issue we are facing is the server has frequently gone to a hang state. When this happened, we won't be able to telnet into the server but there are ping responses. So the only thing to do then would be to reboot the server.
Now I have setup nmon for linux to run 24 hours in the server taking snap shots of the server's performance every 10 minutes. From the nmon output, I could see free memory is always around 20Mb - 50 Mb and sometimes would shoot up to 1Gb and then in 3 hours back down to 20Mb - 50Mb. Is this a normal pattern for a linux server?
From the Oracle console under memory usage, I saw that around 1.5Gb is being used by the Application Server, 36Mb free and 6.5Gb used by other processes. Now, I am curious as what this other processes are and why are they using 6.5Gb.
I am not sure if this is caused by a faulty hardware, OS/kernel bug, or our web application.
    What I have done:
    i) monitor /var/log/messages but no suspicious error being logged not even before or during the server hang.
ii) monitor Oracle Application Sever log files but no suspicious errors logged.
    iii) monitor nmon output daily
iv) searched for similar cases using Google and Oracle's Metalink but found nothing.
    Thanks.

    As a followup ---
We believe that we have found the culprit finally based on two lucky catches during lockups. Last seven days we have been testing various combinations of centennial agent and enterprise agent running and have successfully tracked issue down to these two products not wanting to run together.
We have 32 machines with centennial running and no emctl and there has been no issues for last 18 months. The machines we have had problem with are the ones that use enterprise agent also. We disabled centennial agent on 8 machines and left it running on 6 machines that had emctl agent. We were still experiencing failures on the 6 machines but no failures on 8 machines.
We turned off centennial software on the remaining 6 and have had no lockups since. Based on this we are concluding that "emctl agent" and "centennial agent" dont play well together and so plan to discontinue using both of these together on any machines.
Did not reseach exactly why these two were causing a system panic but since these are production and vital we will live with workaround.

  • How many work processes are recommended by SAP for 16 GB RAM

How many work processes are recommended by SAP for 16 GB RAM ?

This is the calculation for determining the number of work process according to the available memory  for the system.
    - Number of dialog work processes = RAM/256 (min 2, max 18)
    - Number of update work processes = RAM/768 (min 1, max 6)
    - Number of update2 work processes = RAM/1024 (min 1, max 3)
    - Number of batch work processes = RAM/1024 (min 2, max 3)
    - Number of enqueue work processes = 1
    - Number of spool work processes = 1
You can also refer the following link regarding memory management in SAP .
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/EN/02/962817538111d1891b0000e8322f96/frameset.htm
It explains the calculation based on number of processors for the server.

My book marks library is very unstable; they become scrambed, multiply and some are lost - solutiuon?

First of all backup your Firefox profile, or at the very least the profile file ''places.sqlite'' and the bookmarks backup folder.Put the files somewhere safe outside the Firefox paths, the Windows Desktop is suitable.
    * [[Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles]]
Now try to repair the bookmarks database using this add-on
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/places-maintenance/
If that fails try to recreate the database by deleting the original file and allowing Firefox to restore it from a backup
    * see [[Can't add, change or save bookmarks - How to fix#w_create-a-new-bookmarks-file]]_create-a-new-bookmarks-file

  • Unable to start the SAP instance - work processes are terminated

    Hello,
We are implementing SAP ECC 6.0 on iSeries, i5/OS V5R4.
The application server & the database server are implemented on one centralized physical iSeries server.
We recently attempted to copy one SAP system (DEV) from one iSeries server to another, through restoring from an Entire System backup.
After successfully conducting the restore onto the new (destination) iSeries server, and conducting all the necessary host name changes to be the same as the host name of the source system, we encountered a problem when trying to start the SAP : all the jobs under sub-system R3_00 are started, except the jobs constituting the SAP work processes; i.e. WP00, WP01, …etc.

    Hi Rishi Abrol
Thank you so much for your reply.
Actualy i am doing database export - import from windows to AIX but i am separating the databse only not CI, SCS.
I have install/import the databse on AIX and i have change the setting on configtool ,i can see its reading the new database.
But still its killing the work process ABAP+JAVA.
What i have done on CI (Windows):-
    1.I have copy the new database : tnsnames.ora, sqlnet.ora  to  \usr\sap\SID\SYS\profile\oracle
    2. I have change these parameter to  E:\usr\sap\SM1\SYS\profile\DEFAULT.PFL
       SAPDBHOST = databse hostname
       j2ee/dbtype = ora
       j2ee/dbname = sid
       j2ee/dbhost = databse hostname
    3. I have copy the new securestore to   \usr\sap\SID\SYS\global\security\data
    4. i have change the databse setting in config tool

  • Application Server & creator  can work in   fedora core 5 ?

    please i need help

Just so you know, I had similar problems running on Fedora Core 4 as well as Fedora Core 5. I re-installed numerous times, did clean installs of the whole system a few times, and finally came down with what the problem was and the set of items to handle this. I posted this a few months ago on this forum -- hope it helps.
I have 5 workstations and several development & production servers all running FC4 and FC5 and they're all humming along like a charm using SJSAS 8.1 enterprise on the servers and 8.2PE on the workstations.

Let me know if that helps.

  • What is work process

What is Process ? For SYnchronous and Asynchronous updates where do data store temporarly ? and for local update also?
    Regards,
    Prasad

    hi,
    <b>work process</b>
Work processes execute the individual dialog steps in R/3 applications. The next two sections describe firstly the structure of a work process, and secondly the different types of work process in the R/3 System.
    <b>Types of Work Process</b>
    <b>Dialog Work Process</b>
Dialog work processes deal with requests from an active user to execute dialog steps.
    <b>Update Work Process</b>
Update work processes execute database update requests. Update requests are part of an SAP LUW that bundle the database operations resulting from the dialog in a database LUW for processing in the background.
    <b>Background Work Process</b>
Background work processes process programs that can be executed without user interaction (background jobs).
    <b>Enqueue Work Process</b>
The enqueue work process administers a lock table in the shared memory area. The lock table contains the logical database locks for the R/3 System and is an important part of the SAP LUW concept. In an R/3 System, you may only have one lock table. You may therefore also only have one application server with enqueue work processes.
    <b>Spool Work Process</b>
The spool work process passes sequential datasets to a printer or to optical archiving. Each application server may contain only one spool work process.
The services offered by an application server are determined by the types of its work processes. One application server may, of course, have more than one function. For example, it may be both a dialog server and the enqueue server, if it has several dialog work processes and an enqueue work process.
You can use the system administration functions to switch a work process between dialog and background modes while the system is still running. This allows you, for example, to switch an R/3 System between day and night operation, where you have more dialog than background work processes during the day, and the other way around during the night.
    hope it will help u

  • Urgent : Download file from Application Server via Process Chain.

    Hi Experts,
My requirement is to download the file from Application Server to local work station using an ABAP Program .
I want including the above ABAP program in a process chain to execute  the program daily,
I tried to use ARCHIVFILE_SERVER_TO_CLIENT and GUI_DOWNLOAD but unfortunately both the above FM doesn't support to run through Process chain.
Can any one of you help me to send the code which selects a file from application server, downloads to local system and deletes it.
Thank you very much for spending your precious time in this regard.

    Hi Sailekha,
    Regarding your case ..
I suggest you to create the program where it run this function: WS_DOWNLOAD.
After it, the program is run by your process chain.
Hopefully it can help you a lot.
    Regards,
    Niel.
thanks for the points you choose to assign.

  • Secure Ciphers with application server 9.0.4 not working

Have ssl configured and working on Oracle Application Server 10g version 9.0.4. Currently have this in the ssl.conf and it does work and has been for some time.
    SSLCipherSuite ALL
Want to change it to this for security purposes.
    SSLProtocol -ALL +SSLv3
    SSLCipherSuite ALL:!ADH:!aNULL:!eNULL:!LOW:!EXP:RC4+RSA:+HIGH:+MEDIUM
When I make the change and restart http and web cache the services start and take the change. But when I try and hit the webpage I get a oracle application server error page. Looks like web cache is for some reason now blocking me from viewing it.
I have applied this to another server running the same version of oracle application server and it worked. The difference is that the one that isnt working has web cache and the one that works does not.
Any help as to why this is happening?

    1. It is currently NOT possible to set the actual SSLCipherSuite within Webcache. The following Enhancement Request was raised for this issue:
Bug 4340210 ADD ABILITY TO SET THE SSL CIPHERSUITES IN WEBCACHE
The only thing it is possible to do is prevent access with Anonymous Ciphers
See Note 453079.1 Restricting Anonymous Ciphers in SSL (HTTPS) Processing
    2. For the SSL Protocol it is only possible to set the following values:
    SSLV3_V2H: Allows SSLv2.0 (Client Hello only, won't allow a full SSLV2 session), and SSLv3.0
    SSL: Allows: SSLv2, SSLv3 and TLSv1
Enhancement Request Bug 5841589 PROVIDE SETTING IN WEBCACHE TO RESTRICT SSL PROTOCOLS TO SSLV3 AND TLS1.0, has been raised for this issue
If you want to change Webcache from the default (SSLV3_2H) to allow full SSLv2.0 or TLSv1.0 then edit the $ORACLE_HOME/webcache/webcache.xml
For the SSL Listen entry e.g:
    <LISTEN IPADDR="ANY" PORT="443" SSLENABLED="SSLV3_V2H" PORTTYPE="NORM">
    Change:
    "SSLV3_V2H"
    to
    "SSL"
