Viewing and organizing clips

Hi all,
Has any of you used any good program to manage video clips like Aperture does for photos?
Regards,
Rod

Not knowing exactly what you are looking for, I got a suggestion on this forum for how to organize the FCE project files.
I create one folder for my project with folders for the capture, titles, soundtrack, stills etc.
I then set FCE to use the capture folder for scratch before I start the project.
Once I'm done with the project I can simply archive the project folder with all it's content to one or more DVD's.

  • XMP metadata and organizing clips?

    Hello,
I use PPCS3 and PPCS4 depending if I use cineform .avi's or not.
I have a bunch of video clips from my HV20 Canon and HMC-150 Pansonic cameras.
Can I use XMP metadata to organize my library of video clips? Also can you use XMP metadata to add markings to the good parts of the clips and then label the good parts of the clip  which then can be found later via search?
I am looking for some good software for PC users to organize video clips. Something like lightroom for video would be perfect.
Any ideas? What are others doing to organize all their video clips?
    Thanks,
    Simon

Hard to believe there is not something better out there?
Oh, I am not saying that there is not, but just that I have used Bridge for my organizing, and have not looked too far beyond, so I do not know of what is available. ThumbsPlus (Cerious Software) is about to introduce TP-8, and it's been in heavy development for well over a year. It might have enhanced metadata support. Also, I am using an older version of Bridge, so do not know how CS4 Bridge has been improved. It might have the support that you're looking for.
More formats are relying more heavily on metadata, so I can see where this will likely be more heavily implemented in the near future.
Good luck, and please update your thread, should you find the ultimate organizer. Others will benefit.
    Thanks,
    Hunt

Clip inspector in imovie not working properly - when I select a picture (in project library) - and select clip adjustment it tells me that I need to select one or more clips to view Inspector tools and when I select a movie clip and then click on audio adjustments the audio adjustment appears as a speaker icon and I don't know how to get to the various audio options? It was working fine one minute and then I seemed to lose the functionality. Also editing a photo in a photo or getting rid of ken burns effect etc does not seem to work. help

Can anyone shed any light on this as I am having the same problem? One minute it works fine, the next you get the error message above.
    Many thanks.

  • 10.6 iCal week view and mini calendar are out of sync-how to fix?

How does one re-establish "sync" between the large window week view and the small mini calendar month view displayed on the lower left side? Mine is out of sync by a month. Thanks!

Are they off by always the same amount of time or they drift apart over time?
If the former, you may try a quick adjustment, though it is a manual affair. Control-click on the clip in the browser, choose "Open in Timeline" and try moving the audio to match.
If I remember correctly, DV tape audio could be recorded in 32KHz or 48KHz. The latter is the one that should be used, always.
Maybe this one was recorded at 32KHz?

  • Long HDV and XDCAM clips through Final Cut Server

    Hi,
I know that I could post this in Compressor and/or Quicktime and/or Leopard/Tiger Forums, but as this problem it`s causing my Final Cut Server to not working well, I think it makes sense to post here.
To resume: HDV and XDCAM clips (all on original codec, only xdcam transferred to mov in xdcam transfer) with file size bigger than exactly 4GB always FAILS in "Final Cut Server"/"Compressor alone in ANY machine installed from scratch"/"Anything that uses Quicktime". Source and Destination being localy or networked. DV or DV50 can get bigger than that, I`ve never seen this error with DV`s codecs.
I had seen this problem before I bought final cut server. When I was transcoding our interviews for transcription. We always worked with BETA SP and captured in DV or DV50. We were starting to go to HDV and now to XDCAM and this error has started to appear.
I have a "proxy" made a year ago from a HDV and it`s original has 8GB. I tried this file again and as I expected didn`t work. In ANY computer with any installations with only the latest updates. I`ve remembered that I was using Tiger at this time, and Quicktime/Tiger/ProApps had a old version.
My two cents are that some update from Tiger/Leopard/QuickTime/ProApps made this happen.
So ANY HDV/XDCAM file bigger than 4GB it`s FAILING in ANY system. (Tiger or Leopard, With or without FCP and QT PRO, Installed from scratch and updated every thing).
    Some tests I`ve made:
-Compressor works with this two codecs to lower res in TIGER and with QuickTime Version 7.4.0 and LOWER. (had to be tested, but I think that was my version of QT when I managed to make the proxy of this two codecs).
-Compressor doesn`t work on any system with QT above 7.4.0.
-CATDV (http://www.squarebox.co.uk/) version 6 can make proxy versions of this two codecs in TIGER ONLY! They already know of this problem and CATDV 7 works on both.
-Compressing in compressor with H.264 (same codec as the FCSvr proxy) BUT without changing the resolution, size and etc. Works OK in both Tiger and Leopard.
-Exporting through QT works in ANY system BUT I loose TC, so it`s not an option (and I can`t input this workflow in FCSvr without using compressor).
-Exporting from FCP as QuickTime Movie with H.264 doesn`t work on Both (Tiger and Leopard).
-Exporting fro FCP as QuickTime Conversion with H.264 works but as exporting from QT I loose TC and can`t input this into FCSvr workflow.
Error message are always: "QuickTime error = -50" or "QuickTime error: corrupted data" (and of course it`s not corrupted because it`s used - even in FCP to edit - and opened viewed, catdv can do proxy and everything).
I`m surprised not to see anyone freaking out about this issue... I don`t think that It`s only me.
This is some problems that I came across while trying to find a solution:

    Thank You all in advance.

    Hi Chará!
We should, but I think the others will be disappointed eheheheh.
It doesn`t matter what version of Leopard I`m using (right know I`m using Leopard Server 10.5.6, but this issue has happened even with 10.4 if QT is updated and all updates of 10.5 up, as I`
    ve mentioned above).
What file size are those clips that are longer than 10min?
I really don`t get, how it`s possible that just the two of us has HDV and XDCAM files with file size longer than usual? Maybe people that do interviews don`t like to record the entire interview and when capturing those clips would be under this file size limit? Or maybe we are the only ones in the whole world that transcode longer HDV and XDCAM clips (it`s funny that it doesn`t even need to be FCSrv, with only ONE machine and compressor this issue happens all the time).
I`m convinced that I have to install a Tiger version in a virtual machine with compressor and doesn`t update anything to test this further on. But I`m certain that with TIGER and CATDV this works ok! And I think that CATDV uses QT engine to do this transcodes.
This is too much of a mystery to me. Maybe it`s time to spend 24+ hours with apple in a international call and probably not getting anywhere.
I`m only posting this here in FCSrv forum because this issue it`s must worse when you have hundreds of clips with this issue and if you bought the package it doen`t matter if it`s a problem with QT+OSX or whatever, apple has to solve it for FCSrv use.
    Do you reckon?

  • Viewer and External Monitor doesn't playback at same time

When watching clips in the viewer window, they playback fine. But on my external monitor, it only shows the first frame from when it's played. when I stop playback, the external monitor then shows the last frame the Viewer window is stopped on. How can I fix it so that the viewer and external monitor playback the clip at the same time?
At the moment we're digitizing footage with the Offline RT Photo JPEG codec set to 75% quality.
A few days ago we were digitizing footage at 35% quality and that footage plays back fine. We moved to 75% quality at the editor's request. A few days ago we had created a few sample 75% quality tests for the editor to view. I loaded those clips into Final Cut right now and they playback fine as well. So it's all of a sudden just these new clips created yesterday :S.

    Yes.
Forgot to mention that the timeline plays all the footage back properly on both the canvas window and the external monitor. Sorry for not mentioning that sooner.
More discoveries! The playback 'freeze' only happens if I open a clip from the browser into the viewer. If I open a clip from the timeline into the viewer, it plays-back fine!

  • IMovie11 - MARKING PHOTOS AND VIDEO CLIPS USED IN PROJECTS

After endless research, I have finally figured out how to mark the photos and video clips I have in my project so that I don't duplicate them in my project. It's actually easy once you know how to do it.
    1. Create your new project (Movie)
    2. Create your event with the photos and videos you want to use from iPhoto. Name your event same as your Project to make it easier to find the event for that project. The work flow will be > Event > iPhoto Library  > Albums > Select the entire Album or individual items.
iMovie will not mark any photo or video that is not stored in iPhoto, so make sure you have your Photos and Video stored there. You can always delete any media later you don't want to keep. I found it easiest to organize the media I will be using in a project into an Album, and give it a name relating  to your Project so you know where they're at, and you don't have to sort through your entire iPhoto collection to find them.
    3. Now you have your Photos / Video in your event.
    * As you ad the media to your project, an ORANGE line will appear on the media indicating you used it in the project you currently have open.
    * If you see a PURPLE line on any of them, that indicates they are used in a different project you have created. >>> See Attachment ...
Remember that you will only see these mark lines in events.

If you don't want iDVD to show its theme or menu then go into the Map mode in iDVD and drqg the slideshow containing the photos and video clips into the blue Auto Play bin at the left.
When inserted into a DVD player it will begin playing immediatey.  However, when findished it will fall back to the menu so use the menu which would look best for the situation.  They can be modified by droppiing image files into the menu settings bin to give it a different background.
Make sure your photos and video clips end up  in the slideshow together:

  • Help with splitting and arranging clips

    Hi All,
Can some please help a complete noob by explaining their simple workflow for FCE HD from after capture to edit.
I am new to digital editing and am working my way through Tom's book but am a little confused in regards to arranging and organising my clips. I have a new project (My niece's 1st B'day party) which currently has 1 master clip (I think this is the terminology) with several (27) segments after running DV Start/Stop.
This is where I get confused. I want to arrange the segments into Bins, for example: Birthday girl, cake, games etc... But there is something about relationships between master clip, segments and subclips which I don't understand.
How is the best way to "cut up" (and is that the best way) the segments into smaller master clips so i can rename then, rearrange them and add comments in preperation for editing?
Sorry for the long post, but when you don't really know what you want to say you end up saying a lot
    Cheers.
    Andrew

I don't use the Master/Subclip relationships. My method of sorting out various types of clip, by subject (your examples of "Birthday girl, cake, games etc...") is to slide (click, hold and drag) all obviously bad clips into V3 and ignore (mostly), and then slide all the Birthday girl clips on to V2 and move them sideways to group them closer together, then do the same for each other group. This leaves in V1 some shots such as establishing shots, closeups of decorations, departures etc. which you know where to put (eg., establishing shots at the beginning, closeups cut in somewhere where suitable as the editing proceeds). Next, I drag down and left or right various clips from V2 to V1 to their appropriate positions in order, leaving gaps between here and there to avoid having to move sets of clips left and right too often to make room. Then I set In and Out points in the Timeline (or Viewer) and close gaps between the clips within each set and see how that set looks. When all the material has gone through that process I check the whole video and make (usually) minor) changes, then do transitions and set audio levels, then leave it for a few days to look at it afresh.
Is this a bizarre method? What do you pros do?

  • Splitting and renaming clips in FCE4

How can I split a clip up into smaller clips and rename then? Whenever I try to copy or duplicate them I get the same copy for all. I was trying to change the name as well and it seems I can't make them independent of each other. Does anyone know how to do this?

Read through pp. 68-69 of the manual (aka the help file) "Copying and deleting items in the Browser". And pp. 943-950, "Working with Master and Affiliate Clips."
You can cut up a single clip into as many parts as you want. You can do this in the Viewer by setting IN and OUT points or on the Timeline by using the Razor tool. To rename the subclips created this way you have to make each of them an Independent Clip. ( *Make Independent Clip* or *Modify > Make Sequence Clips Independent*.) But read up on it before you do this, as you may create even more headaches for yourself if you're not careful when you do this.

  • Grey background in viewer and canvas

    Hi all,
I don't know how it happened but the background (on the sides of my viewable clip) is grey. I thought that it used to be black. For some reason, it's annoying me. Any idea's?

Click on the % above the Canvas and Viewer and then select FIT TO WINDOW. If the gray is still there, manually resize the window to get rid of it.
    It has always been gray.

  • Renaming and Joining Clips

The instructions in iMovie Help clearly state it is possible rename clips in the Clips Pane, not just the Clip Viewer. In iMovie 3.0.3 which I am using, it lets me rename them in the Clip Viewer just fine by selecting and retyping the name. Once in the Clips Pane, though, I have tried both this and double-clicking and retyping. The new title appears but iMovie won't save the change!
Also, I've been trying to lock together a group of clips by selecting them all, creating a blank title under "Centered Multiple" of the same length, and applying it to the entire selection. Other people say this works fine for them, but when I try it, if it's in Timeline view it shows a circle with a line through it, then applies the title only to the first clip. If in Clips View, it deselects the rest of the clips and applies the title only to the first clip. I'd like to be able to
    1. Move the entire selection, anywhere I want in the timeline once it's edited the way I want, without having to keep each individual clip in order (the only way I've found is by selecting them all but it would be nice if there were a better way) and
    2. If I CAN'T lock, fuse, or otherwise join the clips together, AT LEAST be able to rename them so I am SURE they remain in the proper order when moved!
I think perhaps some setting is wrong, not allowing me to do what has worked for others, but can't figure out what it might be. Anyone have a clue? Thanks for any help or assistance.

It may bear repeating, I'm using iMovie 3.0.3. (I know, I'm probably posting in the wrong forum, but this one is so much better-trafficed and I do want people to see my posts!) This is what it says in iMovie Help 3.0.3:
"My effect stopped rendering before it was finished
If your effect stopped rendering before it was finished, you may have clicked in a text field during the rendering process. To resume rendering, click outside the text field."
(I swear, to my knowledge, I didn't click on anything once the red line started across! It deselected the remaining clips by itself!)
    "About rendering
The process of creating new elements (such as titles, effects, or transitions) in a movie is called "rendering." It happens any time video is modified, such as when you create a transition between scenes or add title text over video.

You can continue editing your movie while your change is rendered. Rendering takes a few seconds or minutes to complete."
Okay, this is what it says in iMovie 6.0 Help:
    "About rendering
The process of creating new elements (such as transitions, titles, or effects) in a movie is called "rendering." Rendering happens any time a video clip is modified, such as when you add a dissolve between scenes or scroll text over video. During the rendering process, iMovie HD makes the appropriate changes to each frame in a clip. As iMovie HD renders a clip, you'll see a small red line progress along the bottom of the clip.
If you apply effects or transitions to more than one selected clip, iMovie HD renders all the clips at once, which can save you a lot of work. You can continue editing your movie while your change is rendered. Rendering takes from a few seconds to a few minutes to complete."
Notice the difference? iMovie 6.0 specifically talks about applying effects or transitions to more than one selected clip. iMovie 3.0.3 never mentions it. Is this an inadvertant omission corrected later, or could I be trying to do something which is actually not allowed in iMovie 3.0.3?
As for renaming clips, I still have not the slightest clue as to why there would be a difference between the Clips Pane and Clips Viewer and why it works in one place and not the other! I don't think it's that you're allowed to rename a clip only once, as one of the clips still has a name iMovie made, so I obviously didn't rename it.

  • Are highlight and shadow clipping must be avoided in any image?

Are highlight and shadow clipping must be avoided in any image?
Because in some cases, let's say, night scene, usually has many black pixels in the sky. Which perform nice contrast against the colorful signs.
Please check the attached image for reference(01.tif).
I know there's nothing in the sky, so I would like to keep all the pixels to be clipped. Is this right?
Some of my students says that other instructors told them to keep all the pixels in the histogram.
But I tell them it depands on how would you like your images to show. Am I correct?
As the attached image, it's impossible to pull the black pixels back to the histogram and I think it's acceptable in this case.
Let's see the 2nd case(02.tif), this image has highlight clipping in the clouds.
I like the way this image looks, which looks like a watercolor painting.
If I pull the white pixels back, the image will change a lot and I will get a very dark overall.
My question is, is it that important to keep your images without having highlight or shadow clipping?
This is not apply to any image, right???
    THANK YOU

For a more in depth discussion of clipping, it should be noted that clipping can occur in either the raw file or the rendered white balanced file. In the latter, it can take the form of luminosity clipping or saturation clipping. Saturation clipping occurs when the chosen color space is too small to accommodate saturated colors at a high luminance. In ACR, saturation clipping is indicated by a colored line or shoulder at the right of the histogram. The remedy is to use a larger color space. Luminosity clipping in ACR is indicated by a white line or shoulder at the right of the histogram and the remedy is to adjust exposure or use highlight recovery.
Examination of the OP's histogram shows a yellow line at the right, indicative of saturation clipping of the red and green channels. The OP could try a wider space such as ProPhotoRGB.
Here is an image of a a flower rendered into sRGB using the ACR defaults and the Adobe Standard camera profile. It appears overexposed and the yellows (actually reds and greens) are clipped as indicated by the yellow line at the right of the histogram.
The raw histogram (produced by Rawnalize) shows that the image is well exposed. The red and green channels are just short of clipping. The image appears overexposed with ACR, since ACR uses a baseline exposure offset for the Nikon D3.
However, when white balance is applied for this daylight exposure, the red channel is multiplied by approximately 2.21, and this should result in clipping of the red channel. This did not work exactly as expected with ACR, so I used Iris (a freeware astronomical program which allows extensive control of the conversion process) and examined the histogram of the resulting image in Photoshop. Note that the green channel is just short of clipping, as expected and that the red channel is clipped.
To avoid clipping with the white balance in ACR, it is necessary to use negative exposure to offset the red white balance multiplier. I chose to use a bit of highlight recovery as well to tone down the highlights while maintaining a pleasing value for the midtones. Here is the resulting preview with rendering into ProPhotoRGB.
In this case, I was able to avoid clipping. However, when the image is printed or viewed on a display with a limited gamut, some clipping would undoubtedly occur.
