Viewing local web pages

Hello all,
I'm new to the Mac world and ran into a problem today.
I was not able to view web pages (html) that I created in Safari.
When I went to open the page in Safari all I could see was the actual html code.
Where am I supposed to put the files so they can be viewed?
Do I need to put them into a folder on apache or change their property to executable?
Thanks in advance for your input!
All the best,
Gerry

Gerry,
First, if you are just doing html pages, as long as you open them as a web page, they will be viewable anywhere on your computer. Open Safari, then go File->Open and navigate to your html page, but the file you open must be name with a .html extension(index.html). It should open as a web page.
Secondly if you are using any server specific languages (PHP, Ruby, etc) you need to first turn on Apache by going System Preferences->Sharing->Turn on Web Sharing
Web sites you want to view from the server need to be stored (by default, it is changeable) in /Library/WebServer/Documents (this is the root library, not your user library, so the easiest way to find this is to open a finder window and click on your boot drive icon, and scroll down to Library, the WebServer directory will not exist in your user library).
you would then open a safari window and type "http://localhost". this will load the index.html page inside the Documents directory above.
create a directory name "mySite" and put that directory in the Documents folder. Inside mySite put your hello world web page, named "index.html". Navigating with safari to "http://localhost/mySite" will fetch and serve your web page to the web browser.
Finally, there is a "sites" folder in your user directory. the url for accessing files in that directory is "http://localhost/~username" where username is your account name. This would be the default directory for iWeb, and other apple related websites that need local hosting for testing.

  • Not able to view my web pages in Safari

I am having problems viewing my web pages in the Safari browser and wondered if anyone can help solve the mystery?
The site was created in iWeb '08, and was loaded to .Mac. I did not want the site to be hosted on .Mac as I already have a domain, but the CNAME process that is described by .Mac is not supported by my hosting service, so I had to ask my hosting service (Freeola) to route the service to their servers and provide masking so the .Mac address would not show in the browser bar.
This works absolutely fine in Firefox and the page loads up without a problem.
However, when I enter the site address in the Safari browser, the name appears in the bar, and then the blue progress bar does 2 sweeps and then a blank page appears, but with the site mame at the top of the window. If I click the cursor on any point on the bank page, a grey horizontal line appears, and then disappears, but still no opening page!
I cannot work out whether this is an issue with the original coding in iWeb '08 and a compatability issue with Safari ( I am using v2.0.4 on all my 3 machines, and the problem is the same), or it's something to do with the way my hosting service is routing the site.
I have asked others to view the site on PC's using IE, and they do not seem to have a problem so far.
I am not a web designer, and know absolutely nothing about writing code and HTML, hence using the simplicity of iWeb, but this seems a strange thing to happen. If I enter the original .Mac site hosting address in Safari, the site shows up just fine!!
Has anybody else had this type of problem?? Any help would be gratefully received, as this thing is driving me crazy!!
    Cheers.

Further to my earlier post, I have just read an entry noting that if you already own a domain name, and ask your hosting service to forward and mask your iWeb '08 created, web.mac.com site to your personal domain, chances are that due to the masking of the site on web.mac.com, Safari browsers interpret the masking as being the end of the site, and as such, just return a blank page?
This may explain the problem. However, call me old fashioned, and possibly a little naive, but surely this cannot be the problem?? It's OK in Firefox!

  • Will not load local web-page and will not allow pop-ups

does not work with local web pages
will not load local files with basic HTTP HREF
have to specifically add file:/// to all addresses
will not allow pop-ups for local files

You need to access the files via http://localhost/ if you want to set an exception.

  • MSN Entertainment - .mp4 icons appear on my desktop every time I am using Firefox to view some web pages.

I have been using Firefox for many years now. Firefox 19.0 on a Mac OS X 10.6.8 Lately when I open and view some web pages an Icon with 'MSN Entertainment -.mp4' appears. Some sessions leave as many as 15 to 20 of these Icons. I can not open them with any thing.
Did I do something wrong or what. I can't seem to find out the answer.
They do not appear when we use Safari

PS - SORRY --- I meant (in the title): "... using Firefox as my web browser."

  • How do I view my web pages in the browser again?

I was able to work on my web pages in Dreamweaver MX2004 and view them in a browser until 3 days ago.  I have also been able to make changes on my web pages which showed up in my website until around 3 days ago.  i am very frustrated. I can no longer view them in a browser or make changes that show up on my website.   Any suggestions?

I didn't install anything new.  I am using Windows 7 on a new computer and had successfully gotten my Dreamweaver installed and running.  I was able to view my pages in the browser just fine.  I made changes to my site just fine.  Now when i go to F12 to preview in the browser, all I get is a blank page showing my connection number to my web host and in little letters at the top, it says "pageok".  I have always seen the page and could correct any mistakes, but now I can't see the page.  It's also unbelievable the changes I have tried to make on some pages show up in my local and remote pages on my computer but do not show up when I go to the website.

  • Applets in local web pages using IE

In IE SP2 you cannot view local (hard drive) web pages that contain scripts without answering a lot of questons. To get around this you can put th so-called 'Mark Of the Web' in the HTML and presto! Javascript scripts now run. BUT Java applets still do not. They silently fail to load .
Without thread-creeping off into flames against MSFT, does anyone know how to work around this?

  • Is it possible to view two web pages side by side on Safari

I am looking for a command that would put two or more web pages(or any open windows) side by side or even stacked so they can be viewed simultaneously. I know you can do this by resizing the the windows but I was wondering if there something already within Safari or Mac that would do the sizing automatically for you.
I remember back in the old Windows 3.1 days there was a Panel option under in the window menu that would this. And I also saw that this is possible in Windows 7 now. Surely, Mac has a way!
    Thanks,
    Casa

I misnamed this the option I am looking for. It is called "Tiling". After some research I found out that this is one of the features that former Windows users miss the most when they come over to Mac. I will have to concur. I don't know why Mac has not added this simple feature.
However, there is a third part app that makes this possible - SizeUp by Irradiated Software. You can download it here - http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/productivity_tools/sizeup.html
There is a limited free version called Two up from the same developer.

  • Partial page view on web page

Using an iMac Blueberry, G3, OS 9.1. On some web pages I cannot see the full page. The left side of the page is truncated and the scroll bar is bottomed out on the left side. I was told that some web producers are catering to the flat screen display that is larger than the CRT.
Is there software or some other means to shrink the web page to obtain a 100% view rather than 80% of the picture with the other 20% out side the boundry of the CRT?

Most web pages look okay at 1024x768 (XGA) anyhow. Designers know that the vast majority of users have XGA screens but nowadays SXGA, WXGA screens are commonplace but still I rarely see pages go much wider.
Go to Apple Menu > Control Panel > Monitors and check you are set to 1024x768 resolution.

  • Opening a local web page on an iphone 3G

I am preparing to buy an iphone. I have been able to find answers to all my quesitons except one. Help would be greatly appreciated.
I maintain several web sites. They are very simple sites, just html and a little javascript window dressing. They contain photographs of items in my toy and sports card collection. I often need to refer to the photographs on the site while at collectible shows. I DON'T want to carry my laptop around anymore.
Since the web speed isn't always fast, and I may sometimes not get a signal, I want to copy the folder containing the site to the iphone, which I believe I should be able to do. However, I need to be able open the web site stored locally on the iphone in a browser, and I can't seem to find out if I can do that or not, or if there is an app that would allow me to do this. If I were on my PC, I would open up IE and put in a drive letter and path to the index.html file and the site would open locally. I want to do the equivalent with the iphone if that is possible.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Lewis Brooks

You cannot, per se. The iPhone's file structure is not accessible as such, and the file transfer apps do not allow you to open the files in another app like Safari.
There's a Mac app called FileMarkMaker that can store a file (including a web page) in Safari's bookmarks file, and it can then be accessed on the iPhone. If does that converting the file(s) to DataURLs. Something similar may be a workaround for you.

Maybe they aren't using the right url? They sometimes get corrupted when you send them by email. Make sure you give them the shortest possible version, usually http://web.mac.com/username

  • HT1677 Where can you set default in Safari to view as web page instead of Mobile Version?

Where can you set the default setting in Safari to open page as web page instead of Mobile Version on iPad running iOS6.01?

And, to make it even more fun, sometimes a website changes how it deals with Safari Mobile. A website that treated it like a desktop browser suddenly starts treating it like a cell phone. Just to mess with you. Or push an app.
    Best of luck.

  • Port Forwarding to view a web-page that isn't on a...

I have port forwarding set up to access certain services at home, which works fine using my home hub, with the exception of one thing. I'm trying to use a url like the one below, in order that I can gain access to a web page which is on a web-server on a machine in my network that operates on a different port to normal (normal being port 80 or 443 here since this is https):
    https://hostname.dyndns.org:1234/service-name
within my home network, I use the following address in a browser and it works fine:
    123.123.1.123:1234/service-name
Now I have the port forward application set up on the home hub 3 with the ports set to forward 1234 to 1234 and I have assigned this to the correct machine (i've tried assigning by IP addess and also tried changing the forwarding rule to '1232 to 1234' and amending my url appropriately.
Unfortunately nothing I have tried is working.
uPnP is turned off as most of the machines I want to access are on static IP's. (I couldn't assign forwarding rules to the static IP machines with it on).
Could anyone shed any light on this?
    thanks in advance.
btw, uPnP is turned off as most of the machines I want to access are on static IP's.
(I do have a work around by using RDP to another machine and then opening the url using the target machines ip address in the remotely controlled machines browser, but it's far, far from ideal).
    Solved!

I am not sure you have that quite right on DynDNS, as you have to use two host names, and a webhop to link the two.
Here is a live example of what I used to have.
Mt current webserver works on port 80, which is fine.
My host address is http://forumhelp.dyndns.info which points to the machine on my LAN, which has port 80 forwarded to it.
Prior to the current arrangement, I had a webserver running from a NAS device on port 8100.
To ensure that incoming web requests appeared on the standard port, I had to create an additional similar host name, and then create a webhop within DynDNS to do the redirect.
The web address on the Internet stiil be the same, but would  webhop to http://dummyhost.dyndns.org:8100/
Have you checked using one of the many port checking websites to see if port 1234 is open?
