Viewing on browsers

This doesn't seem to be my week. I'm trying to view the
refreshed version of the correction previously posted. However, I
get this now...
This error (HTTP 500 Internal Server Error) means that the
website you are visiting had a server problem which prevented the
webpage from displaying.
I don't know what happened but it's now viewable... ????
It also appears I was premature in posting the previous problem
as solved. I'm still getting it... sorry ;(
Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 (studio 8) running on XP
Making this change would require changing code that is locked
by a template or a translator. The change will be discarded.
I'm working on a test site that is not posted to the server,
as it is not done enough to be approved by upper mangement.

"View in Browsers" button has disappeared!?

Yesterday the little globe icon was up there at the top; today, it's gone.
I can still use (on my Mac) ctrl-F12 and opt-F12 to view a file in the primary and secondary browsers, but where's the *******' globe? I don't see anything in Dreamweaver's Preferences that toggles it off/on.

I unchecked-marked the Document toolbar and then rechecked it, and
after I restarted Dreamweaver (but not before), the globe icon showed
up.

Spry Accordion from theme 6 template Adobe, not viewing in browsers?

Actually I figured it out, it turns out that the browsers don't call for the new .css file, so even if you update it in dreamweaver and it looks fine, the browser didn't get the new file. So if you want the browser to update you have to hold down shift and click the refresh button on the browser and ta-da, it looks the same in dreamweaver. Thanks though!

How to get QuickView as the main PDF viewer in browsers?

I have uninstalled Adobe PDF reader as it is UGLY and SLOW. I want to use Apple Quickview app that was initially prebuilt in OS. But wen I deleted Adobe Reader browsers fail to open pdf documents as association still on Adobe Reader.
How to return it back to Quickview?

Why won't my text align right in Live View or Browsers?

I created a class called .reviewer so the the name of the reviewer would align right while the the review itself remains aligned to the left. I applied the class to the reviewer's name and in design view, it looks perfect. But in Live view and when I preview in a browser, the text remains aligned left. I put this class in two external style sheets, main.css and mainReviews.css.

Why are videos saved as gif's slow when viewed in browsers?

i can never find an answer to this, an seeing as how CS4 just came out, but is still giving me this issue there must be something new that i dont know about.
i play back the video in CS4 and its blazingly fast, faster than the actual video, i save the video as a gif, an when i preview it using the microsoft image previewer it plays back at normal speed just like the original video, but everytime i preview in a browser(IE8, FF3, Opera) they all show it running very slow, even after the video is fully loaded.
the only solution i know is to reduce the amount of frames to load when i first open the video but that makes the video look very choppy and not smooth.
ive seen gifs around the net that are very large(over 300px hight/width) and run at real time speed, but i dont know of any other program that allows you to import video and turn it into animated gifs.
please help.

GIF is not a video format.
If something plays back faster than the original video (and then slower in a browser) then you have discovered just one of the faults of trying to produce video in a GIF file.
Use a proper video format.

Pages won't display in live view or browsers

Yesterday they displayed. Today they do not. Tried looking at one of the Adobe templates - that displays fine. Checked code at top of page, it is exactly same as code for Adobe template that displays. Any ideas.

I am actually embarrassed to respond. For some reason do not display was checked on my body div. I am posting two other questions tho.
(1) I have a website with photos interspersed with the copy. I would like to be able to find a way to overlay the photos with a floating div that would allow me to put captions in. No luck so far.
(2) CSS. There is clearly something I don't get. I thought once you wrote a rule you could click on the content anywhere in the paragraph and it would change. Not working for me. Specifically I wrote some css to style photographs but when I check on the images and then the css nothing happens.

Unable to view error for website created on iWeb

We have hosted a website created on iWeb. When we access the site we often get the following error message. We contacted the hosting company, but they asked us to make the changes on the web pages as suggested in this error message in order to be able to view the actual error. Only then will they be able to help us out. Can someone help us incorporate these changes in our web pages.

In my first posting (just below my name) I've quoted the entire content of the error message that pops up. But it only pops on certain occasions, it doesn't happen every time. The other curious fact is that this message does not give you the actual error. It only tells you to make certain changes in your script so that you can view the error remotely. Therefore, until we are able to make these changes in the script or html code for the web page, we won't be able to know the actual error. When I tried to view the code or script of my web page, I didn't find a place where I could make these changes. Can you help me in this respect?
BTW I was trying to study the pattern of these error messages and I think I've found a correlation. However, I'm not sure if that could be a valid reason. It seems like every time I update my website, people get these error messages until about 3-6 hours after each of these updates. Once a reasonable time has elapsed after the update, the site seems to be working fine. Could it be due to a conflict between the older & newer versions of the web page being simultaneously resident on the site for a while after the update. Or could it be due to the change in the index file? Pl comment.

Inserting SSL JavaScript prevents proper Live View operation

I added an SSL Certificate script to site, and on cross browser testing, all worked well. JS code located at Line 4 of "index.html".
However, on returning to DreamWeaver CS5 later in day, updated text content and clicked on "Live View", which brought up my "Custom Error" page. Then tried viewing with browsers available at local, that too failed and produced 404 error page.
Error message: The file MenuScript.js could not be loaded!
In the address bar, the first part of the URL showing was correct, but DW CS5 automatically added the continuing local path, (Bold) which then looked like this:

On page validation (http://validator.w3.org/) I get:

Typical values for type are type="text/css" for <style> and type="text/javascript" for <script>.
This tells me I have to update local settings but haven't a clue as to what or where. As always, help would be appreciated.

Live view is interpreting the js code as written, the only way to stop this is to install a ssl certificate on your local testing environment, or comment the script out for testing.
Error message: The file MenuScript.js could not be loaded!
html4 and xhtml documents require the language="javascript" attribute to be included as part of the <script> tags attribute, but it can be omitted when using html5.

Photos not loading in browsers

My site works well in Safari - but in Explorer (which is the browser my client use and wants the site to work in) - several photos, the logo, and even the "hidden text on the home page that's suppossed to be helping the search engines find me... are messed up.
Can anyone help me figure this one out? Why some photos work and others not...etc...

The following may or may not make any difference to your particular problem in Explorer, but anyway it's worth correcting to avoid other possible problems...
The names of your pages contain "%20", e.g.
http://web.mac.com/karastout/iWeb/eggers%20site/cellar.html
...As iWeb's Help viewer says: "Browsers convert spaces in site names to "%20." To avoid these symbols, use an underscore, hyphen, or some other character instead of a space. Also avoid non-Roman characters; many get converted to numbers when you publish."
As far as the photos problem is concerned: Are all the photos the same type? ...JPEGs, PNG's, etc. If not, is there a particular type that is "messed up"?

7.5 SP3 New Server - Runtime Error on Web Page

Hi experts
I have added a new web server to an existing BPC installation.
The environment is load-balanced, 7.5 SP3, built on windows server 2003 SP2, with SQL 2008 SP1
I used the prerequisites:
Xceed v6.5
Antixscript v3
However, when I try to open the /osoft page directly on the new server, I see the error shown at the bottom of this page.
I checked the DLLs against those on the 2 working servers, and they are the same.
I have copied the antixscript dll from system32 to websvr\bin, as I have seen similar problems before and this has resolved it.
Unfortunately, it hasn't worked this time.
I have also checked that I can log my PC (windows 7, IE8) into either of the existing web servers, and they work fine
I have also opened the web site directly on the new server and that works fine (although it offers nothing but Web and Admin, as Excel is not installed)
I really need to get this server up for user testing first thing in the morning (UK time)
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Quick update:
I'm removing BPC and reinstalling, as the issue definitely lies within BPC and/or its associated Web Site.
I know this as I am able to successfully connect from a client PC to to Reporting Services website.

Problem with text resizing and moving

After much pain with this issue, I'm going to ask for help.
The whole issue(s) resolves around text upsizing, changing and moving in Muse.
No amount of grouping, layering and locking has stopped this issue for me.
I don't have divs that are a pixel off and whatnot. This happens even when I have a blank site and I test it (as seen in the example pic below).
The majority of the time, this is an issue when viewing Muse created sites on Android, although text does move when viewed on iOS.
Example 1:
I have a square div. I put text in the div that I want to stay contained in the div. Basic right?
View site on browsers and iOS devices it generally plays by the rules (although not always, there are some movement going on). When viewing this example text and div on an android device, the text resizes larger. This results in the text overlapping the div and moving EVERYTHING below it down. This makes it impossible to tightly design anything for a website.
I know Android has options within it for users to set text viewing size, but this worthless from a web designer standpoint. That is something I can't control.
Example 2:
I have 1 text field and set the typeface to 15. There is nothing else on the page, just a background image (under "Fill"). Viewed on browsers and iOS looks fine. When viewed on Android this text balloons to some enormous size (25+) that makes the website utterly useless. This random resizing makes it impossible to design to.
Example 2.5:
I take that same text from example 2, copy it into 2 of the same size text fields. They are placed next to each other, taking up the same width as Example 2. It now looks like 2 columns of text. Set the typeface to 15 again. I view it on Android and get the resizing issues from example 1 not example 2. It's noting to the extent of example 2 but like example 1, it still changes enough to ruins any design I'm trying to accomplish.
Is there any place in Muse to lock the text? I don't want to make the text into an image (obviously).
I been dealing with this in Muse for 6 months and haven't been able to find anything online or in forums about. I understand with the bevy of platforms out there nothing will look the same across the board, but right now I don't see how I can continue working with this issue.
Am I the only one dealing with this?

Welcome to the annoying realities of working with text on websites... Nothing you describe is unique to Muse.
Every browser has it's own text engine and thus each line breaks text differently. Even the exact same web page on the same computer with the same fonts will sometimes result in different line breaks in different browsers, or even in different versions of the same browser. It's just a side effect of the nature of determining a line break, where even the most miniscule difference in calculations can result in an entire word fitting, or not fitting.
There are two "tools" that are especially important to understand and use effectively in order to create designs that work as effectively as possible with the variation in line breaks from one site viewer to the next.
Text Frame Height Always Matters
If a text frame is drawn to the exact height of the text wthin the frame, then any increase in the number of lines of text due to changes in line breaks will result in the text frame growing and other objects below the text frame being moved down.
If a text frame is drawn larger than the height of the text then when line breaks change the text frame won't grow unless the changes in line breaks are severe enough to result in the flowed text being taller than the text frame was originally drawn.
If you resize a text frame smaller than the text within the frame in Muse Design view, the frame will snap back to be large enough to accommodate the text, but a dotted horizontal line will appear within the text frame indicating the "minimum height" for the text frame. If line breaks change in the browser the text frame will grow or shrink in height down to the minimum height indicated by this dotted line.
Careful sizing of text frames can go a long way to creating a design that will continue to work well even when line breaks, and thus text frame heights change.
Grouping Has Consequences
As part of the output process, Muse collections the objects you've drawn into a hierarchy of horizontal groupings, vertical groupings, or stacks. When line breaks change in different browsers and text frames change height, when the text frames are located in this output heirarchy determines what impact the change in height has on other objects (if any).
For example, if you have a layout that looks like a 2x2 grid of text frames, by default Muse will interpret it to act as two colums. So if the first text frame gets taller it will push the text frame below it down, but won't impact the location of the two text frames in the second column.
If that's not the behavior you want, the way to tell Muse to treat things differently would be to group the two items in the first "row". This would cause the top to to be treated as a horizontal group. If anything in the group grows taller than the group, the group resizes taller and pushes the objects below it down. Thus if the top to items are grouped, if either one of them grows taller than the group it would push both the text frames below downward.
The 2x2 grid is just a simple example of the concept. In most cases you don't have to do anything special to get the behavior you want, but it is important to understand grouping has this ramification. Grouping an arbitrary set of objects on your page can result in undesired behavior when text frames resize in the browser.
For the Andriod screenshot you've provided, I don't have an immediate explanation. For us to explain what's shown we need to know the exact browser, browser version, Android version and device the screenshot is for. It would also be immensely helpful to have the URL for the page, so we can attempt to reproduce what you're seeing and view the exact code involved.

Certain websites that i've accessed earlier in a day return a message saying 'Server Error in '/' Application. how can i access these websites and resolve what seems to be a continuing problem'

within the past 10 days I've started to have problems in accessing websites that I visit regularly and may have visited only hours before. The message I receive is 'Server Error in '/' Application' which gives details about how to find out more information but (1) I'm not sure how to follow the information and (20 whether the information is safe, and (3) whether following the advice will correct the problem - it doesn't sound as if it will. within the past 10 days I've started to have problems in accessing websites that I visit regularly and may have visited only hours before. The message I receive is 'Server Error in '/' Application' which gives details about how to find out more information but (1) I'm not sure how to follow the information and (20 whether the information is safe, and (3) whether following the advice will correct the problem - it doesn't sound as if it will. I'll cut and paste the information below - help received with thanks (I'll just provide the current problem site but it has happened with a number including abc.net.au and classicsonline.com amongst others

Runtime Error
Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.
