Here clinets used VIP 10.222.48.145 to connect to instance 1 on node 1.
if the node 1 fails VIP of node 1 : 10.222.48.145 diverts all connections to other nodes depends on load balancing.
Am I correct ??
And what this bellow node 4 entry corresponds to ??

ANd IP cannot failover as fast as VIPs ? Any reason for this ?
Thanks.

let for node 1 ip is 148.87.199.10 and VIP is 10.222.48.145I have no idea what you want to know or say. All you are giving us is a list of hostnames and IP adresses. My guess is that 10.222.48.145 is the IP for your interconnect interface on node 1 since both the VIP and public IP need to be on the same subnet.
Here clinets used VIP 10.222.48.145 to connect to instance 1 on node 1.

Am I correct ??No. Clients connect to listeners running on any of the VIPs (for 10g) or SCAN IPs (in 11g). Clients may connect to any listener randomly or in order and each listener will redirect new connections to an instance that is providing the service specified (or requested) by the client and connections may end up on another node depending on load-balancing and other parameters.
If a node fails, the VIP will be transferred (or brought up) on another node but it will not actually serve anything on that IP but rather reject all incoming requests. SCAN IPs together with an extra scan listener (in 11g) also fail over to other nodes but will actually serve connection requests.
And what this bellow node 4 entry corresponds to ??
10.222.57.118 node4-nfs.us.oracle.com node4-nfsI have no idea. I am not administrating your system. How would I know? From the name, I would guess it is an extra IP for an NFS server on node 4. But I have no idea what that IP or server does.
ANd IP cannot failover as fast as VIPs ? Any reason for this ?What is the question? The public IP never fails over, that is the one that an administrator would use to connect to the server OS (with ssh for example). And there is no point in having it fail over because every server still needs one "static" IP. The reason you need VIPs is that without them, clients could get stuck in a waiting state when a node goes down. When a node goes down during a certain phase of TCP connection establishment, the client will wait for a reply for as long as the TCP timeout which is usually around 15 minutes. To prevent this, the VIP is switched over to another node that will simply reject the connection as fast as possible so that the client can try again with another IP address.

  • VIP failover in Oracle RAC

    Dear all,
I am using Oracle Rac 10gR2 running on top of Sun Cluster 3.2u3.
I have a test to check the failover ability of VIP in Oracle RAC, however the result was not as I expected.
    The test scenario was:
    - Turn on the 02 nodes and wait for all services including both Sun Cluster and Oracle RAC online.
    - Using SQL Navigator to connect to the database using the VIP on node1. (VIP1)
    - Shutdown the node1.
    - All services and resources on node2 still online, however after a long time (about 10 mins), I did not see the VIP1 failover to the alive node.
    - The "crs_stat -t" command did not show the VIP1 online on node2 (alice node).
    - The SQL Navigator could not establish the connection to the databasse using the VIP1 any more.
The output of "crs_stat -t" command before shutting down the node1:

    So my questions are:
    - Was my test scenario correct to check the failover ability of VIP in Oracle RAC?
    - Is there any additional configuration needed to perform on the system to achieve the VIP failover?
Please help me in this case as I am new to Oracle RAC.
    Thanks.

    Dear Rajesh,
    Sorry for late reply.
I have already tested 02 cases: shutting down a node and crashing a node. Below are the output of the log files in the 2 test cases.
Once again, when shutting down a node, the VIP did not failover although the CRS on that node was shutdown before all other services and resources of Sun Cluster shutdown.
Please help to check the log files and give me advise if you see anything abnormally.
    Thanks.

  • Problem with Oracle 10g RAC VIP network setting at Solaris 9

    Dear All,
I have tried to set up a Oracle 10g RAC Release 2.
With OS solaris 9, and 2 nodes.
The nodes setting as the following:
    nodes 1:
    Public address: 172.16.0.121
Private address: 192.168.0.121, 192.168.1.121 (dual path for heart beat)
    nodes 2:
    Public address: 172.16.0.122
    Private address: 192.168.0.122, 192.168.1.122
And i have assigned two IP adress 172.16.0.131, 172.16.0.132 as the VIP address for the
    RAC.
And the following is the /etc/hosts file:
    root@shk01 # cat /etc/hosts
    # Internet host table
    127.0.0.1 localhost
    # public address
    172.16.0.121 shk01 loghost
    172.16.0.122 shk02
    # heart beat
    192.168.0.121 shk01-priv1
    192.168.1.121 shk01-priv2
    192.168.0.122 shk02-priv1
    192.168.1.122 shk02-priv2
    # VIP address
    172.16.1.131 vip-shk01
    172.16.1.132 vip-shk02
But when i run the command "$ ./runcluvfy.sh comp nodecon -n shk01,shk02 -verbose"
    it shows the error:
    ERROR:
Could not find a suitable set of interfaces for VIPs.
    Result: Node connectivity check failed.
I did try to add the VIP address on bge0:1, as i using bge0 for the public address.
Both nodes i did using the same interface name for it.
Anyone have idea for me to check out the error?
Also, I have other question about the raw device.
As there is option for setting for ASM or raw device. If choosing raw device, does it mean that it just need to
format the storage disk but without newfs it? And then the Oracle program will able to handle it?
    Thanks,
    Xentar

You don't seem to state categorically that you are using Solaris Cluster, so I'll assume it since this is mainly a forum about Solaris Cluster (and IMHO, Solaris Cluster with Clusterware is better than Clusterware on its own).
Clusterware has to see the same device names from all cluster nodes. This is why Solaris Cluster (SC) is a positive benefit over Clusterware because SC provides an automatically managed, consistent name space. Clusterware on its own forces you to manage either the symbolic links (or worse mknods) to create a consistent namespace!
So, given the SC consistent namespace you simple add the raw devices into the ASM configuration, i.e. /dev/did/rdsk/dXsY. If you are using Solaris Volume Manager, you would use /dev/md/<setname>/rdsk/dXXX and if you were using CVM/VxVM you would use /dev/vx/rdsk/<dg_name>/<dev_name>.
Of course, if you genuinely are using Clusterware on its own, then you have somewhat of a management issue! ... time to think about installing SC?

  • RAC public IP and VIP

    Hi
I understand RAC requires 3ips for each node
VIP -------------------->for near instantaneous failover and clients will be connecting to this
    Private IP ----------->For interconnect traffic
Public IP ------------>Why is this required ?
    regards

Public IPs : used to connect to the physical server (Host) OS LEVEL as you can not connect to VIP and Private IP. Public IPs allows you to connect using putty etc for remote connection.
Private IPs: Should belong to separate class / subnet, should not share Public ip class. Recommendation is not to share for usual traffic.. Used for Heartbeat and Cache fusion.
Virtual IPs : Used for Failover Management. VIPs are backbone of "RAC" , As Listener serves using these VIPs. After successfull cluster installation you should be able to ping these VIPs. before you cant.. you can also see weather VIPs are up or not.. ifconfig -a , VIPs should be plumbed in with public IPs. one more thing.. should be same subnet as Public IPs.
It was quick over view really.. If you want more detail then please refer to Documentation.
    Thanks

  • Prevent VIP's from other nodes to start on 11gr2 RAC ??

I have one node which is part of 3 node 11gr2 RAC.
Other 2 nodes(rac1, rac2) a power down, and on this node(rac3), crs is down.
Problem is, that, if I switch crs up, he will up all VIP addresses , from
    rac3-vip, but, also rac2-vip, rac1-vip..but, this (rac1-vip, rac2-vip) is
already VIP address's in production on second RAC.
1)Can I somehow disable this 2 VIP's BEFORE I start crs on rac3 to prevent
this other VIP address to start on rac3???
    2) If no, can I start crs, and quick stop down this VIP's,
    crs_stop ora.rac2.vip
    crs_stop ora.rac3.vip
    3) and maybe somehow prevent from future start before I really migrate
    everything on new RAC??
    Tnx

I already do that, because this is preprod, we prepare to switch prod 10g rac to this 11gr2 rac.
10g rac has 2 nodes. (prod)
11gr2 rac has 3 nodes. (2 nodes have same VIP as prod).Huh? That's not what I would call a good idea. Using the same IP addresses? What for? Why not re-use the hostnames instead?
Today the VIP hostnames resolve to the 10g RAC's VIPs. Tomorrow when the switchover to 11g happens, the DNS is updated and these VIP hostnames resolve to the 11g RAC's VIPs.
So, I want on this third node from 11gr2 RAC to stop those VIP's, which is the same as prod VIP's..so I can have third node up, and first 2 node from 11gr2 rac down (which have same VIP's as 10g rac)Just the idea of purposefully creating duplicate IPs on a network.. Crazy...
You can try and hide those 11g RAC duplicate IPs from the network. Routing table is perhaps an option. Using iptables is another Or as you want, preventing the VIPs from starting in the first place.
But you should take this as a lesson in how NOT to configure networking. Duplicating IPs is simply a no-no. There is no reason I've ever seen, nor can think of, why IPs should be duplicated like this. Hostnames resolution exists for addressing such requirements.

  • Install RAC 11g2 : DBCA error with listener

I get this error while create database with DBCA in RAC 11g2 installation.
ORA-00119: invalid specification for system parameter REMOTE_LISTENER

    So thanks
    Chuong

I've had a very similar problem with DBCA and creation of an 11.2.0.3 database and this ORA-00119:Invalid specification for system parameter REMOTE_LISTENER ORA-00132: syntax error or unresolved network name 'orapscan:1521'.
The solution to my problem was that on the host (a production host) that I was trying to execute DBCA from if I did a 'tnsping orapscan' it did not resolve.
On our development host a 'tnsping oradscan' (oradscan is the scan equivalent in dev for our production equivalent orapscan) it resolves ok.
    ie.
    13:22:15[oracle@euxq10 [eu11d] ~]$tnsping oradscan
TNS Ping Utility for Linux: Version 11.2.0.3.0 - Production on 08-APR-2013 13:22:20
Copyright (c) 1997, 2011, Oracle. All rights reserved.
    Used parameter files:
    /apps/oracle/network/sqlnet.ora
Used EZCONNECT adapter to resolve the alias
    Attempting to contact (DESCRIPTION=(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=))(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=10.3.55.34)(POR..... etc.....
In this case, it is resolved from EZCONNECT.
This then led us to look at the sqlnet.ora on both our development and production environments, and this is where we found a difference.
In our development environment in sqlnet.ora, we had -
    NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH= (LDAP, TNSNAMES, EZCONNECT)
But in our production environment in sqlnet.ora we had -
    NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH= (LDAP, TNSNAMES)
Thus when we changed our sqlnet.ora in our production environment to include EZCONNECT - ie.
    NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH= (LDAP, TNSNAMES, EZCONNECT)
Then when we retried the DBCA create, we did not receive this ORA-00119 / ORA-00132 error with parameter REMOTE_LISTENER.
Anyway, this was the solution to my problem. Hope it helps others.
    Regards,
    Roger

    How does SCAN work?
“When a client submits a request, the SCAN listener listening on a SCAN IP address and the SCAN port is contracted on a client’s behalf. Because all services on the cluster are registered with the SCAN listener, the SCAN listener replies with the address of the local listener (Using SCAN the connection is initiated using the SCANIP, but is established using the VIP) on the least-loaded node (Each scan listener keeps updated cluster load statistics) where the service is currently being offered. Finally, the client establishes connection to the service through the listener using VIP on the node where service is offered. All of these actions take place transparently to the client without any explicit configuration required in the client.”
So, to SCAN Works you must aware:
    Server (cluster)
-The service must be registered on Local/Scan ListenerI believe I've done this now but see below.
    Database (rac)
-You must use remote_listener parameterThe remote listener parameter I have is:
    SQL> show parameter remote listener
    NAME                    TYPE     VALUE
    remote_dependencies_mode     string     TIMESTAMP
    remote_listener           string     rac-scan:1521
    remote_login_passwordfile     string     EXCLUSIVE
    remote_os_authent          boolean     FALSE
    remote_os_roles           boolean     FALSE
    result_cache_remote_expiration     integer     0
    Cient
-Must resolve all SCAN Names and VIP Names (check with nslookup)I'd made a mistake there. My VIP names were not available from DNS.
    -Must access port of Listener
    Try it:
    http://levipereira.wordpress.com/2011/05/03/configuring-client-to-use-scan-11-2-0/
Thanks, that document was useful however I don't think I've got it completely right as yet as I have no listener_scan2.

  • JDBC connection creation with ORACLE RAC

    Hello All,
Here my scenario is when ever one of my VIP instance in Oracle RAC goes down.Weblogic/Java(JDBC) is taking close to 3 minutes for failover with secondary host. I am looking for a solution to reduce the connect time failover seconds..
    jdbc:oracle:thin:@(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS_LIST=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=HOST1)(PORT=1521))(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=HOST2)(PORT=1521))(FAILOVER=on)(LOAD_BALANCE=off))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVER=DEDICATED)(SERVICE_NAME=SERVICE)))

    Hi,
In such case failover will depend on RAC instead on Weblogic.
Oracle will never recommend such way.
Please try to use Mutli datasource to implement such failover and in older version we have 60 seconds for failover time.
But we can change but adding one Bug (currently not remember).
    Regards,
    Kal

    change VIP name
    http://surachartopun.com/2009/01/change-vip-hostname-on-oracle-rac.html
If you'd like to change HOSTNAME... Metalink (NOTE:220970.1)
Can I change the public hostname in my Oracle Database 10g Cluster using Oracle Clusterware?
Hostname changes are not supported in Oracle Clusterware (CRS), unless you want to perform a deletenode followed by a new addnode operation.
The hostname is used to store among other things the flag files and Oracle Clusterware stack will not start if hostname is changed.
    Changing the Private Interconnect
o Change of the IP Address: change the IP address in the hosts file and/or DNS and make sure that ASM and the database also use the same interconnect
o Change of the private node name used by Oracle Clusterware: requires a reinstall of Oracle Clusterware
So, Public or Private hostnames can only be changed by removing/adding nodes, or reinstalling Oracle Clusterware. VIP Hostnames can be changed
But you can read this idea (reinstall CRS)

  • RAC 11g SCAN and DNS

    Hi,
Do I need to consider and resgister SCAN with DNS or just use SCAN as VIP before I install RAC 11G R2 ?

    Hi,
In case you decide to use the Grid Naming Service (GNS),the GNS daemon will allocate three IP addresses from the range of addresses offered by the DHCP server. The IP addresses are Address records in DNS that resolve to the SCAN name in a round robin fashion
In /etc/hosts on each node of the cluster – a single IP for the whole cluster. Helps bypass the OUI installer limitation of DNS defined SCAN.
    see this links
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/install.112/e17212/prelinux.htm#BABEHBAA

  • RAC nslookup of SCAN addresses

    2 node RAC 11.2.0.2.0 on win 2008r2 64bit
what IPs should you see if you nslookup the nodes in a RAC? I have 2 RACs, dev and prod, Im getting different behaviour doing nslookup on the nodes. My networks say theres no difference in the config ( but Im not sure). The dev RAC is causing me problems which I think if I get can get this sorted will be ok. from my side, I built the 2 RACs the exact same so I cant see anything from the OS side.
    Here is behaviour
    Development RAC:
nslookup node1: I see (in any order as DNS is round robin)
    physical ip node1
    vip node1
    scan1
    scan2
nslookup node2: I see (in any order as DNS is round robin)
    physical IP node2
    VIP node2
    scan3
    Production RAC
    nslookup node1: I see
    physical ip
    nslookup node2: I see
    physical IP

the problem isnt really with with knowing where the SCAN is located and where any of the 3 addresses are or whether theyre up, its how they resolve in DNS.
With DNS set to roundrobin, its possible that one of the SCAN addresses can be first in the list if I nslookup the client name. If the SCAN 1 is on node 1 and relocated to node 2, then if I RDP to node 1 Im getting directed on to Node 2 as the IP is carrying over. Im thinking the arp issue with win 2008 is a culprit here, I have the oraarp driver running but it doesnt change the fact I see different DNS behaviour whether I nslookup in prod or dev.

  • CRS Install hostname being used by more than once for the same node.

Hi, we're installing The Oracle Clusterware and on the Cluster Configuration screen of the universal Installer (the one were you specify the clustername and clusternodes) we get the following error message in a dialog box when the next button is clicked:
"You must enter unique values for the public node name, the private node name and the virtual hostname for all nodes in the cluster. The name, node1, that you entered is being used by more than once for the same node."
Has anyone experienced this error message before and know what the cause is?
Could it be a problem with the /etc/hosts file?
    Thanks in advance,
    M

Make sure you allocate separate IP addresses on your network for the VIP addresses on each RAC node (this is not the same as the machine IP already configured on the OS).
Also, the installer may complain if your private and public IPs are configured under the same subnet.
Finally, as mentioned before, check that name resolution for all the IPs to be used. On all RAC nodes, your /etc/hosts file should be configured with:
    - public name and IP addresses of ALL nodes
    - private name and IP addresses of ALL nodes
    - VIP name and IP addresses of ALL nodes
    Hope that helps
    B.

  • Cluster and ASM services doesnt start automatically

    Hi,
I have configured a 2 node 10g RAC environment (rac, rac2) in RHEL 4 through vmware.
However the cluster services and ASM services do not come up automatically after server reboot. I have to manually bring it up using ./srvctl command.
    [root@rac2 bin]# ./crs_stat -t
    Name          Type     Target     State     Host
    ora....SM1.asm     application     ONLINE     UNKNOWN     rac
    ora....AC.lsnr     application     ONLINE     UNKNOWN     rac
    ora.rac.gsd     application     ONLINE     UNKNOWN     rac
    ora.rac.ons     application     ONLINE     UNKNOWN     rac
    ora.rac.vip     application     ONLINE     ONLINE     rac
[email protected]     application     ONLINE     UNKNOWN rac2
    ora....C2.lsnr     application     ONLINE     UNKNOWN     rac2
    ora.rac2.gsd     application     ONLINE     UNKNOWN     rac2
    ora.rac2.ons     application     ONLINE     UNKNOWN     rac2
    ora.rac2.vip     application     ONLINE     ONLINE     rac2
Could someone please guide me as to how these services can be brought up automatically upon every reboot?

Normally all services will start automatically, I am not sure how you installed and configured your RAC.
Here i am giving all options.
    Option1:-
    Re: CRS auto-start
    Option2:-
    See the below links.
    http://jaffardba.blogspot.com/2009/03/how-to-startup-rac-database-services.html
    http://www.dannorris.com/2009/03/12/start-database-services-automatically-after-instance-startup/
    Option3:-
if you simply want to start the service upon server reboot, put srvctl
command in rc.local script under /etc directory.
    Hope this solves your issue.

  • Failover - How to achieve a transparent failover using SQLPlus

AIX 5.3 Oracle Clusterware 10.2.0.4.0 Oracle Enterprise Edition 10.2.0.4.0
This is the behavior I see from an Oracle Client session which is to be expected if I read RAC: Frequently Asked Questions [ID 220970.1] see below
    (1) SQLPlus session connected to NodeA
    (2) NodeA - Clusterware services stopped
    (3) NodeA-vip has failed over to Node B
    (4) SQLPlus session receives an error
    (5) SQLPlus establish new connection to NodeA-vip
My question is how is a transparent SQLPLus session failover achieved as illustrated in [ID 339107.1] see below
*** Dedicated Connections to a Migrated VIP Can Lose their Connection after the VIP is Switched Back [ID 339107.1] ***
    SQL> select instance_name from v$instance;
    INSTANCE_NAME
    rac11g1
    $ crsctl stop crs
    SQL> /
    INSTANCE_NAME
    rac11g2
RAC: Frequently Asked Questions [ID 220970.1]
*** Why do we have a Virtual IP (VIP) in Oracle RAC 10g or 11g? Why does it just return a dead connection when its primary node fails? ***
    The goal is application availability.
When a node fails, the VIP associated with it is automatically failed over to some other node. When this occurs, the following things happen.
    (1) VIP detects public network failure which generates a FAN event.
    (2) the new node re-arps the world indicating a new MAC address for the IP.
    (3) connected clients subscribing to FAN immediately receive ORA-3113 error or equivalent. Those not subscribing to FAN will eventually time out.
    (4) New connection requests rapidly traverse the tnsnames.ora address list skipping over the dead nodes, instead of having to wait on TCP-IP timeouts
Without using VIPs or FAN, clients connected to a node that died will often wait for a TCP timeout period (which can be up to 10 min) before getting an error.
As a result, you don't really have a good HA solution without using VIPs and FAN. The easiest way to use FAN is to use an integrated client with Fast Connection Failover (FCF) such as JDBC, OCI, or ODP.NET.
*** What do the VIP resources do once they detect a node has failed/gone down? Are the VIPs automatically acquired, and published, or is manual intervention required? Are VIPs mandatory? ***
With Oracle RAC 10g or higher, each node requires a VIP. With Oracle RAC 11g Release 2, 3 additional SCAN vips are required for the cluster. When a node fails, the VIP associated with the failed node is automatically failed over to one of the other nodes in the cluster. When this occurs, two things happen:
    1. The new node re-arps the world indicating a new MAC address for this IP address. For directly connected clients, this usually causes them to see errors on their connections to the old address;
    2. Subsequent packets sent to the VIP go to the new node, which will send error RST packets back to the clients. This results in the clients getting errors immediately.
In the case of existing SQL conenctions, errors will typically be in the form of ORA-3113 errors, while a new connection using an address list will select the next entry in the list. Without using VIPs, clients connected to a node that died will often wait for a TCP/IP timeout period before getting an error. This can be as long as 10 minutes or more. As a result, you don't really have a good HA solution without using VIPs.
With Oracle RAC 11g Release 2, you can delegate the management of the VIPs to the cluster. If you do this, the Grid Naming Service (part of the Oracle Clusterware) will automatically allocated and manage all VIPs in the cluster. This requires a DHCP service on the public network.
    Thank you
    Steve
