Virtual FTP account

Dear all,
just wanted to share some information with you and kindly ask for your valued comments.
A few days ago I needed to provide a local Wordpress installation with a local ftp account. I did not want to create a new full-blown user account (with login-in shell, home directory etc) so instead I followed this route:
1) I created a new user 'vFTP1' of type Sharing Only
2) I changed the NFSHomeDirectory for the new user from '/dev/null' to '/Users/Ben/vFTP' (using the Directory Utility)
3) I added the line '/usr/bin/false' to /etc/shells (in order to allow ftp log-in )
4) I added the line 'vFTP1' to /etc/ftpchroot (jailing the user to its home directory)
5) I started the ftp server with 'sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ftp.plist', and tested log-in and tried to jail-break. Everything went fine and I am happy now!
I would much appreciate your comments on the above described method, its security implications as well as and other concerns/comments you might have (I am not so experienced on this topic). Could/should I have done this in another fashion? If anyone knows how to do this 100% from the Terminal, then I would much like to know.
The computer I use is an older MacBook Pro (2010?) with OS X 10.8.2

When you administer the web site, click on the "Web Server"
tab (left hand side). Remove any references to the IP number you
see there.

Create FTP account for user in Solaris 10

Hi,
I am new to Solaris and I need to create a n FTP account so user can have access to certain folder ie /opt/www/docs/newfiles/ (only for upload or download).
user should not be able to go up the defined folder and have access to upper folders.
I tried # useradd -d /opt/www/docs/newfiles/ testuser and then # passwd testuser but this user can navigate up and also can telnet to server.
Please help me to fix the problem. I may not even doing the right thing.

Hi.
You can configure the /etc/ftpd/ftpaccess file, to do that, an a lot of things more.
Check ftpaccess man page.
Don´t forget restart your ftp service when you made changes to this file.
For example, modify the following lines, previos backup of the file:
Declare a guestuser:
guestuser testuser
The
user's home directory must be set up exactly as
anonymous FTP would be. The home directory field of the
passwd entry is divided into two directories. The first
field is the root directory that will be the argument to
the chroot(2) call. The second field is the user's home
directory, relative to the root directory. Use a "/./"
to separate the two fields. For example, the following
is the real entry in /etc/passwd:
testuser:x:100:92:Guest FTP:/opt/www/docs/./newfiles:/bin/false
Check for permission capabilities.
The following permission capabilities are supported
chmod yes|no typelist
delete yes|no typelist
overwrite yes|no typelist
rename yes|no typelist
umask yes|no typelist
Example:
delete yes guestusers
Define a directory with dirglob that permits or denies uploads.
upload absolute [class=classname]... [-]
root-dir dirglob yes|no owner group mode
dirs [d_mode]
Example:
upload class=guestuser * /opt/www/docs/newfiles yes testuser nodirs

How to access ftp account externally

Hello,
I'm using a the server app on 10.8.4 with no-ip. A subdomain of mine (home.mindofmedia.eu) links to that server. When I access that subdomain I can see the default webpage of the server. So that worked.
I also enabled the FTP on the server. But how can I connect to it?
I guess the ftp account username and password is the same as the admin account.
When I try to login internaly on the ftp account (thru terminal) it works. (ftp 192.168.0.50)
But when I try to login thru the subdomain it fails (ftp home.mindofmedia.eu)
I got this error message: Abort Trap: 6
Any idea how I can login on the ftp account thru the subdomain?

I would only need FTP (or whatever) access to this server for this reason.
I have a script that automaticly backups all my websites (about 25 websites).
Instead of buying online storage for this I thought why backup on my home server. That is way cheaper then.

I want to use Connect to Server an FTP account, but make it writable

I have an FTP account through my .com.au domain.
My aim: to use the large online storage 'cloud' as if it were any other readable/writable folder on my computer.
I set up Automator to automatically connect to the server. However, the server is readable only. How can I adjust it to make this Server connection writable?
Also, I know Cyberduck can let you mirror a folder on the FTP with a local folder. Can I somehow use this to update such a mirror every 30 mins or whatever?
Any other solutions, please let me know.

You cannot write to an FTP server via the Finder. You can only read.
You'll have to use another FTP client to write.
Also, either use SFTP (secure FTP) or don't pass any sensitive information to your 'cloud.' FTP passes usernames and passwords in the clear. I imagine the data transfer is unencrypted, also.

Custom home folder for BC FTP accounts?

Does anyone know if you can customize the home folder for FTP account/login to BC like you can with other hosting providers? I know you can manage access with account roles, but I don't think it goes as specific as what folder on the server can be accessed by a specific account. Right now all FTP accounts login straight to the root folder.

Unfortunately you cannot control or customize this further via BC FTP. The system will always open in the root. All you can do via FTP is create/delete new folders as well as upload/remove files.

Multiple FTP accounts/settings

I’m previous GoLive user and one of my sites is published on four different FTP’s / Sites. Is was easy in GoLive just to move the bullet to one of the other publish server settings and “re-publish” and so on…
But how can I do that in Dreamweaver? It seems that just one FTP-setting is available so I have to type all the settings over and over again. Is that correct or is there another way in Dreamweaver to get my site published an easy way to four different FTP-accounts/sites?
(One of the places/publish servers is with local file transfer to my NAS)

Not as far as I know no. Seems like you may need to set up 4 (or however many) site definitions for each of the remote site...using a different site name for each, but pointing to the same site folder.

Dreamweaver FTP accounts backup/restore question

I have Mac OS X, Intel Mac Pro. Prior to that I had a Dual G5
machine... I backed up the entire hard drive. I want to just do a
fresh install of my apps, but I want to know how to import all my
FTP accounts (there are 20+)... Is there a way to just import them
from a specific location?
OH just to let you know, I have Dreamweaver CS3... if that's
critical to know...

To get the files, just copy them into the same location on
your hard drive.
That should happen when you restore.
Can you still get at the Dual G5 machine? If so, EXPORT the
site
definitions from it, copy them to the new box, and IMPORT
them (using DW's
Site Manager).

Do you have a tutorial or any training documents that can help me create an FTP account?
I have the FTP credentials including my username and password for our organization's Web site, however, I need step-by-step guidance on how to set up the account so I can post upload files.

Virtual computer accounts got deleted

Hi,
Two of the virtual computer names got deleted from AD and cant be restored.Cluster computer account still there and three of the other instances are running.
I tried recreating the virtual computer accounts and granted permissions to cluster computer account.
still i cant get the resource started saying GUID is wrong.I tried to update the registry GUID of vdb,

Toshiba Virtual Store Account Reset - 23254

I have just bought a Toshiba journ.e touch and I have tried to go on the Toshiba virtual store but its asking for user name and password but Im unable to put this in.
How can I get it changed or get it put into my name because there are other things like the o with all the colours on it I cannot get onto.......... Can anyone help please?

Does anyone know how to list/create/delete/modify virtual service accounts? It seems like MS is now intent on creating entities capable of logging into my system but I have no way of listing or editing them! Any help is much appreciated.
