Virtual hosts web : how ??

Lion Server is driving me nuts.
I'm honestly few hours away from see if time machine works nicely and restore Snow Leopard Server and get everything back as it was.
First and major grip : multiple domains.
Second : php and apache extensions.
Before everything was easy, I can configure everything , multiple domains, with aliases, etc etc. Now everything gets pointed to ONE domain and I cannot even see the wildcards ( * ) . So as I have several domains pointing to my webserver, he simple ignore them and puts up the default page.
Oh and PHP : not working. So I tried to change to root directory but dont have PHP parsing. Extensions ? None.
They made everything simplistic. Fine for a road user. Very bad for a server.
I downloaded the optional server tools and got my workgroup manager back and my server admin but in the server admin, I cannot add the web service ( presumebly because its in the server app already  ) so I cannot configure any aliases / virtual hosts / extensions
Do I have to edit apache files manual ? off with the GUI ? what was wrong with the old one ?
Please help, got a 12.000 hits site down at the moment and cannot get it back up.
Oh and dont get me started on the removal of MySQL...

  • Setting up multiple web sites (virtual hosting).

    Dear members:
I am considering OS X Server for a personal project and would like some advice to help me decided what route to take.
My computer will soon be turned into a server hosting my web sites and some other services at my home office. I am thinking about OS X Server as I have done some research and found OS X to require quite a bit of work so that it can do virtual hosting.
How simple is it to configure virtual hosting in OS X Server ? I am considering the latest Leopard version in case it matters. I am not experienced and wish to employ an application that will simplify this process.
Any help will be very appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Joseph Chamberlain

You could create local PAC file <http://findproxyforurl.com/pac_file_examples.html> where you can return multiple PROXY servers.  You would create text file with your PAC script in it.  Then specify System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> Proxy -> Automatic Proxy Configuration, and click "Choose File".
If you choose to take BDAqua's advice and create multiple Network Locations, you can then use either
    /usr/sbin/networksetup -switchtolocation "MyCompanysProxy1"
    /usr/sbin/networksetup -switchtolocation "MyCompanysProxy2"
    /usr/sbin/networksetup -switchtolocation "MyCompanysProxy3"
    or
    /usr/sbin/scselect "MyCompanysProxy1"
    /usr/sbin/scselect "MyCompanysProxy2"
    /usr/sbin/scselect "MyCompanysProxy3"
you can put them into a script of your choosing.  Shell script, or Automator Run Shell Scirpt, or Applescirpt do shell script (or Perl, Python, Ruby, etc...)

  • Accessing portal server with virtual host via web dispatcher

    Hi,
I have portal installed at http://hostname.com:50000. A web dispatcher is installed in front of it which uses port number 80 and redirects to http://hosname.com:50000.
so when i say http://hostname, my web dispatcher redirects to http://hostname.com:50000/ from where i can access my portal.
now I want to create an alias for my hostname, say when user types http://mydev, it should redirect to http://hostname.company.com thru webdispatcher.
so i created virtual host for my portal server . how to use this in my virtual hosts in my webdispatcher.
I have already gone throug this..
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_erp2005/helpdata/en/fe/cda776f2f64d5287c614b2f715c25f/frameset.htm
would be great if some one can help me in this regard.
    Thank you
P.S: I dont want to create a DNS alias with name mydev, then i think virtual host concept doesnt make sense, atleast in java engines..which has different concept in SAP systems.

    HI Jacob,
Thank you for the reply.. I am little bit confused.could you please clarify the followint to me.
My requirement is when user types "http://epdev", it should redirect to http://hostname.company.com:50000
    1. To do that, according to what you said, I will create a DNS alias epdev to the IP address where my portal is hosted. so when the user types http://epdev, I have set up a parameter in web dispatcher profile to redirect to http://hostname.company.com:50000/.. so my requirement is fulfilled now..I hope this the correct proc for what I intended to achieve. am I right?
    2. As said above, I am using web dispatcher only for redirection to a fully qualified name, as portal requires as fully qualified domain name. Is there a possibility other than web dispatcher for redirection.
    3. if the above procedure works, I got a question like..what is the use of "virtual hosts".
How is it different from creating for instance, creating as many DNS aliases to IP address.
Although, it was explained at http://help.sap.com/saphelp_erp2005/helpdata/en/0b/fbf5a47928f84e8d0beba8371508e6/frameset.htm
    I didnt clearly understand it.
I would really appreciate, if you could clarify these to me.
    Thank you

  • How to create and access a Virtual Host on the J2EE WAS?

Hello, I have searched through the Forums and help.sap.com and found a lot of information on how to set up a Virtual Host on the J2EE server but am having issues with it working.
The goal is to provide a simple virtual host on the J2EE Portal server to host some static image and HTML files. Previously I had stored these files in the standard publicly accessible SAP J2EE folder location /usr/sap/<SID>/JCxx/j2ee/cluster/serverx/apps/sap.com/com.sap.engine.docs.examples/servlet_jsp/_default/root/. This location is resolved to when using the URL <host>:50000 for example.
The main issue here is that during Portal support pack applications this folder gets wiped out and we have to remember to save off any custom files and folders in this location and replace them.
I would like to create a virtual host to store these static files (i.e., branding-image.jpg, etc...).
I have run through the process of creating the virtual host both using Visual Administrator and <host>:50000/nwa but am not able to get the virtual host name to resolve properly.
The following are the steps that I have taken. Let's assume the standard SAP portal (i.e., xSS, etc...) is running properly on <host>:50000.
    1. create virtual host via Visual Administrator/NWA called 'sapwebserver1' by using the Create Host option (takes on the attributes of the 'default' standard virtual host)
    2. change the root directory for this virtual server to a custom folder at E:/tmp/mimes (where E:/usr is where the J2EE files are all installed), no start files were set up and nothing else was changed in the new virtual host record, no permissions were changed on the /tmp/mimes folder from whatever the default Windows user permissions are normally set, I am using a local Windows  administrator account but I have not seen any reference in the help files or the examples that indicate that any specific permissions updates need to be made on the virtual host root folder
    3. restarted the J2EE server as well as the HTTP Provider service
    4. before updating the company DNS, I wanted to test this locally on the server and so have updated the server's local HOSTS file with a <host IP address>   sapwebserver1 entry
    5. from that server I can ping the sapwebserver1 virtual host name and it resolves properly to the machine's physical IP address
According to all of the documentation and examples I have seen I should now be able to (from that server) launch a browser and access the static files in the virtual host by referring to http://sapwebserver1:50000/branding-image.jpg for example. This is not working and the browser just brings up a Cannot display the web page error in IE. By referring to the virtual host name sapwebserver1:50000 it's supposed to hit the J2EE server and based on the host name sapwebserver1 realize that it should resolve to the root directory E:/tmp/mimes. This is not happening. Just as a test I have created a copy of the 'default' virtual host and called it sapwebserver2, updated the local HOSTS file for this entry, and tried to see if that would work like the 'default' host. My expectation was that http://sapwebserver2:50000 would behave the same was as http://<host>:50000 but it too fails to resolve just like the sapwebserver1 virtual host refernce.
Would anyone happen to have any pointers on what to do next? I just want a simple virtual host to be able to serve up some static images and files.
Thanks for any insight or assistance you might be able to provide here.
    Graham

This defeats the purpose of trying to centralize SAP-related web resources on the SAP server. Typically IIS/Apache or other non-SAP servers are under the control of IT and not the SAP BASIS group.
We simply would like to have a centralized location to store static web files so that they are not overwritten during Portal support pack applications.

  • How to configure virtual hosts and separate tiers

The configuration we require with WLS must:
    1) provide virtual hosts that can operate under their own SSL environments (some one way, some two way, with different certs)
    2) perform all XML parsing of received message objects in the web layer in order to (a) offload CPU from ejb layer to web layer and (b) prevent any malformed message from penetrating to the ejb layer - reject in the web layer
    3) the web tier must be physically separate from the ejb tier - an integrated WLS server is not acceptable for security reasons
    4) the ejb layer must be clusterable
    5) DNS round robin is sufficient protection for web layer failover
I do not see clearly how to accomplish this configuration using the WLS suite. Would appreciate guidance on this prior to plunking down big dollars for licenses.

  • Console shows web application deployed to server but not to the virtual host yet things still work, huh?

I finally figured out how to get the virtual hosting piece to work in
wls811. Now I have a question about the console presenting me with some web
app information. The Web Application Modules node and the Deploy tab shows
me the application is deployed to the server and it's Active, however the
console indicates the web app is not deployed to the virtual host and is
inactive. But the server is resonding to requests for each of my Virtual

    Anyone with some ideas? Thanks.

do you see any deployment exception in the server.log ? if nothing please post the web.xml and sun-web.xml

  • Publish Abap Web Service in ICF virtual host

    Hello
We have configured our abap aplication server with two virtual host in SICF
one the default_host that listen in http 8080 port and other virtual host that
    listen in http 8090 port.
We need define some ABAP web services that listen in default_host:8080  and other virtual host in virtualhost2:8090.
We define de web service with SE80 wizard and then create the configuration end point
    with SOAMANAGER.
Our problem is that soamanager ever create the entrie of endpoint in sicf transaction, under default_host:8080 service tree not under virtualhost2 service tree. and so we can not call
the web service like http://virtualhost2:8090/sap/bc.... because don't exist, only exist
    http://defaul_host:8080/sap/bc....
we try to copy the entry of the tree under virtualhost2 in the proper place of the tree,
but when call the webservice with soaui the system report the error:
No Web service configuration for this access path: ""
i can see that there are entries in the table SRT_CFG_SRV_ASGN that are related with this
problem, because assign the url of the endpoint of the ws to virtual host, but i don't
know how the system generate this entries.
someone know how call ABAP web service with icf virtual host?
    thanks
    regards
    diego

    Hi Trevor
For test purpose i can do it works.
The key point is create the proper entry in the table SRT_CFG_SRV_ASGN that refer to the correct VIRTUAL_HOST.
When you genreate the endpoint of the service with soamanager, the system generate an entrty in this table with the fiel VIRTUAL_HOST = 0, you can copy this entry and change only two fields.
    VIRTUAL_HOST = <the number of your virtual host>
HASH --> you can calculate this field with the FM CALCULATE_HASH_FOR_CHAR, in the parameter DATA contatenate the content of the fiels VIRTUAL_HOST and URL (be careful with the upercase), this function module return you the hash.
(First you have to replicate the icf tree that soamanager create under your virtual host tree)
With this configuration i can call to my WS over the virtaual host, using soaui.
I hope this can be useful for you.

  • Web sharing - virtual hosts and CGI

This topic might be a bit advanced for this forum, I'm not sure. But here goes.
I'm trying to set up my laptop to act like a web server so that I can do test development on it. I have two web sites, and have successfully created virtual hosts for each of them.
The part that I'm struggling with now is enabling CGIs, as I want to learn to write CGIs in Perl. I can't seem to find any site that discusses how this is done in Leopard. One said something like "just put the CGIs into /Library/WebServer/CGI-Executables and it'll work", but of course, since I've got virtual hosts defined, it seems that anything addressed to "localhost" defaults to the first virtual host and thus there is no way to refer to a CGI placed in that location. Besides which, I'd like to know how to enable CGIs placed in a folder on each of my virtual sites, so that I could test them in place.
    Any ideas?

One said something like "just put the CGIs into /Library/WebServer/CGI-Executables and it'll work", but of course, since I've got virtual hosts defined, it seems that anything addressed to "localhost" defaults to the first virtual host and thus there is no way to refer to a CGI placed in that location.
    That is an incorrect assumption.
By default, Apache is configured to recognize any URI that begins with /cgi-bin and serve that request via a CGI script in /Library/WebServer/CGI-Executables
This is true even though each site's DocumentRoot is set somewhere else on the file system (that's by design since it makes it harder for a remote attacker to affect your CGIs)
Since it does not matter which site the request was on, any /cgi-bin request would be served from there, so:
    http://www.domain1.com/cgi-bin/some.cgi
    http://www.domains2.net/cgi-bin/other.cgi
would both be served from /Library/WebServer/CGI-Executables even though they are for two different virtual hosts.
Now, of course, if you want each site to be separate and have its own set of CGIs (maybe some.cgi for domain1 does something different from some.cgi on domain2) then this approach causes problems. For this you will need to edit each site to have its own cgi-bin directory.
Unfortunately (although I haven't tested it) I think Matt's solution won't work because Apache is going to catch all /cgi-bin/ requests and serve them from /Library/WebServer/CGI-Executables, never getting to the cgi-bin directory within each site's documentroot.
To set site-specific CGI directories you need to add a ScriptAlias command to each site's .conf, such as:
    ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ /path/to/site/cgi-bin/
This tells apache that any request for /cgi-bin/* should be served from /path/to/site/cgi-bin
Ideally the path should be outside of the site's normal document root, but it can be inside if you really want.

  • Is weblogic 8.1.1 capapble of having a default web app on virtual hosts?

I have a number of virtual host being served on the same weblogic 8.1.1
server. For example, say www.abc.com , www.def.com and www.ghi.com and they
each have their own directory underneath the applications directory ABC,
DEF, GHI. When the user types out http://www.abc.com or def.com or even
www.ghi.com, I would like weblogic to automatically goto the appropriate web
app I want to associated with each virtual host.
Is this possible? So far, I've seen it can't.
I put in the <context-root>/</context-root> in the weblogic.xml file, but
the server only lets you have one context root. So the first web app to
load gets the context root, so www.def.com can get the DEF application, but
the rest of them have to have some context, in other words www.abc.com/ABC
or even www.abc/GHI will work, but I don't want that! This was easily
configurable in 7.0SP1+2. Where and how do I do this in 8.1.1?
If you've tried this and got it to work, please post any files you might
have that are useful? I'm not sure where to goto next. Thanks.

I think I found out what my problem is. There appears to be no restrictions
in the server for the virtual host name being the same name as the
application name. When there is, WLS seems to lose control of where to goto
in the config.xml file. I just prefixed my virtual host names with 'vh' and
    all is good!

  • Associating Default Web Application with Virtual Host

    Hi
We are trying to run several virtual hosts on the same managed server. However, each of those virtual hosts (e.g. bob.mydomain.com, john.mydomain.com) will need to have a different default web application (the rest of the deployed web applications will be the same between hosts). We tried to create default web applications with <context-root> in weblogic.xml set to / (also tried "") - however when attempting to deploy 2nd default web app an error message comes up:
Context path '/""' is already in use
So, it appears that we can't associate a default web application with a virtual host. Any ideas on how to solve it?
    Our Environment:
    Weblogic version: 10.3 TP, Windows
    Many thanks
    Jason

Is your webapp targetted to the correct virtual-host during deployment? It could be possible that your webapp is targetted to the default web-server instead of the virtual-host causing this error. Can you validate this from your config file?
You can also configure default webapps for virtual hosts by setting the default-web-app-context-root element of virtual-host element in your config file

  • Web App and Virtual Host and Clustering

              Hi,
              How are you doing?
What is the best way to deploy a web application using a virtual host on a clustered
              environment?
Here is what we are doing:
o Deploy the web application on the virtual host
o Deploy the virtual host on the cluster
o Make the web appliation, the default application on the virtual host
This seems to work, but I have additional questions?
In the above deployment, looking at the deploy tab for the web application shows
that the application is deployed to both the cluster as well as the virtual host.
Even though we didn't explicitly deploy to the cluster! What happens if we deploy
explicity (i.e., target) the web application to the cluster?
What other approaches / configurations are you guys using?
              Thank you so much,
              -Bart Simpson

Never mind, I think I have a solution. Even though e-docs say that DefaultWebApp attribute at virtual host level was deprecated as of WL 8.1 (inline with Servlet 2.3 specification) one can directly edit config.xml file and add the attribute.
For instance, here is an example to set webapp APP1 as a default webapp for virtual host vhAPP1:
    <VirtualHost
    Name="vhAPP1"
    DefaultWebApp="APP1"
    ... />

  • How to configure multiple virtual hosts for the same context root /

    Hi,
    I am using Glassfish V1 U1 - b14 on Solaris.
I am trying to configure two applications to be mapped to the / root context, each one in its own virtual host.
    Two things I have noticed:
    1. I have to manually add virtual-hosts="hostId" in domain.xml/application-ref ... looks like just simply deploying the app does not do that although the application is set as default for its particular virtual host. Is this a bug?
    2. Although I have set for each virtual host the default web-app correctly, and they both respond fine, I cannot map both of them to the / context. The second application (chronologically deployed) does not respond when called with the / context ....
Any ideas? Is this a bug again?

Wow, that's a shame. All mighty Application Server and two different apps on two different virtual hosts are considered ambiguous to have the same context root definition.... Fair play to Tomcat and 90% of the rest of servlet containers!
In my case I have the same EAR we are planning to deploy to many (up to 30) virtual hosts. Faking different context roots for each deployment will bring unnecessary overheads...
Should I file a bug or feature request?
Thanks again for your answer, although you're basically saying it is not possible I will wait and look a while for a possible solution before bringing this topic to a conclusion.

  • How to confiture virtual hosts with multiple domain names

    hello,
I've read through some of the postings here on virtual hosts, but I thought I'd better solicit advice before I actually try some of the things I've read about.
In a nutshell, I've purchased multiple domain names that I'd like to alias to a new site (currently it is just a subfolder in the main site directory) on my OS 10.3.x server. There is only the one main site configured right now on the box, so I know I need to set up a second "virtual site" pointing to the files in this subfolder to make it function as its own site.
I've dabbled around with the sites settings in the GUI, but I'd probably be most comfortable setting all this up in the httpd.conf by hand if I could. But I'm weary of this because I know it might be better to use the GUI because of OS X Server's flavor of WebObjects and Apache (sigh).
So, I have two main questions:
    1) How would I set up this second site using the GUI in server settings? Do I need to first move the subfolder out of the main folder before it can be designated its own site? Or can I just point to it in the GUI? Can I use one of my purchased domain names in the domain field?
    2) Currently, I have URL Forwarding set with my multiple domain names, but I'm thinking there might be a better way to do this? For SEO I'd rather use some type of redirect rather than being penalized by search engines for having what looks to be multiple domains pointing to the same site.I'm thinking I should create virtual sites for each domain name I've purchased with a hard redirect back to the main site?
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    thank you for your reply.
    > You can create each site as a new Site in Server
Admin. When you do this you can choose any
directory on disk as the document root for each
site. This means you can move the sites' folders out of
/Library/WebServer/Documents if you like - you could
    create /Library/WebServer/site1,
/Library/WebServer/site2, etc. (or even be outside of
    /Library/WebServer if you want).
so, are you are saying that I could designate one site to be
    /Library/WebServer/Documents/site1
    and another to be
    /Library/WebServer/Documents/site1/directory1
even though directory1 is contained within site1's structure? I'm not advancing this as a good idea, necessarily. I'm just wondering if Apache would complain.
    > Each site should have the domain name set as per your
registered domains. Apache will need this to
determine the correct site to serve for each
    request.
Well, after some additional research I'm thinking I'm missing a critical piece of the puzzle. That being access to the DNS host server that manages the context of my server. I have purchased domain names through an outside registrar that point to my site and I can create virtual hosts on my server, but I don't have the ability to add the new virtual host names into the DNS server that manages my box. If that makes sense. Or maybe I'm missing something?
    >
I'm not sure why you're using URL forwarding at all.
Without that piece of information it's impossible to
tell you whether you should continue using them or
not - in general there's no need to use URL
forwarding if you have multiple Virtual Hosts setup,
but it sounds like you have multiple hostnames
pointing to the same content, so your needs may be
    different.
I'm using forwarding for the reason I list above. I didn't purchase hosting with the registrar where I purchased my domain names, so they are parked on the registrar's name server with URL forwarding to my server. The DNS server that manages my box resides in a different location and I don't have the ability to add DNS entries pointing to virtual hosts that I want to set up. Am I stuck?

  • How to define a separate virtual host for each client in SICF

    Hello,
We have an ERP system with multiple clients running on it. The WebDynpro ABAP applications once developed are available on all clients, as standard. However, this is not our desired behavior. We want:
    1. The WebDynpro ABAP applications should be managed separately in SICF depending on the client
    2. The URL for accessing the WebDynpro application should have a own host name for each client. e.g.
A WebDynpro application on client 100 should be accessed by http://host1:5000/sap/bc/... and the same application on client 200 should be accessed by http://host2:5000/sap/bc/...
After a while researching I find out that creating a virtual host for each client in SICF would be a possible solution to fulfill the above mentioned requirments:
    1. Set the profile parameter is/HTTP/virt_host_* with corresponding host name and port number
    2. Create a new virtual host in SICF assigning the profile paramter to it
    3. Assign a client to this virtual host
My question is how to specify a client to a virtual host? I didn't find any possibilities in SICF!
Anyone can help me? Thanks a lot in advance!
    Best Regards

    Hi Srikishan,
thanks for your reply. Your suggested way is certainly a potential, and also my preferred option for solving the multiple-client-capable URL access to WebDynpro / BSP applications.
However, for some reasons, based on the customer requirements, the client should not be visible in the URL. The URL for accessing the WebDynpro / BSP applications on different client should have different host name, as if they are different companies. Besides that, we want to manage each WebDynpro / BSP application on different clients in SICF separately.
Therefore, at least on my opinion, we need to introduce a virtual host for each client in SICF. But how do I make it happen?
    Regards
    Di
