Visa Set Timeout Or Wait Function

Hi guys, I want that my VISA waits for a certain number of seconds doing always the same operation.
The first  idea I had is shown in Immagine, after that I saw the Visa set Timeout but I haven't understood how it works.
What I want is that the instrument I'm controlling stays in the :TRACe1:MODE MAXHold (without resetting the comand, so no cicle) until I want.
Which is the correct solution?

Hi Kate first of all thank you for your reply so the second one should be used between the write&read visa function, is it correct? For example when I want acquire the data from the instrument I should give some time between the instruction sent with the Write Visa and the feedback received from the Read Visa, have I understood well?
Another thing about the first immage using this configuration  are you sure that the last value that I read from the instrument will be the result of all the things seen from 0 to 20seconds?
You will find the reason of this question watching the immage attached. As you can see the doubt I have is that the output of the image2 is the same of the input of the image1.
To be more accurate the instruction :TRACe1:MODE MAXHold has this function: Maintains the minimum for each point of the trace, and updates each trace point if a new minimum is generated in successive sweeps.
So what I want to see is the final result of the successive sweeps, for example the final result of all the sweeps after 20 seconds.
I hope that this clarify you what I'm asking for.

  • How can use VISA Read and the Wait Function properly

    I am trying to read an instrument. The is a simple instrument because all it does is feed data; there aren't not any write commands whatsoever. I am trying to read the instrument in time intervals. It seems to work fine except for the one second interval. Every 5 seconds I don't get reading and there are zero bytes at the serial port. Any suggestions on what I should do?

    There is a Visa serial VI called VISA Bytes at Serial port. Use a comparison node for =0 and wire this to a case structure. In the false case, read your data.

  • Is there a way to set up a 'dial string' with a 'wait' function?

    I'm trying to set up calling my work voicemail. On the blackberry i could set up a dial string with a wait function. So when i dialed the voicemail #, once it answered I could hit a button on the phone and it would send the next set of characters (in this case, my extension #), then wait again, and once I got my password prompt, i could again send the next characters (now my password). I can find the way to put in a pause...but it isn't enough and doesn't do what i want it to do. How can i do this on my iPhone?
    It really is important in that i don't want to have to enter these characters while i'm driving.

    Thanks for the reply....i've tried that and it's not doing what i want it to. Our VM sometimes has delays, so its impossible to predict home many pauses i need....really need a wait function.
    Thanks

  • Setting the 'WAIT' function

    Hi,
    Can someone help me to set the wait function to 5 minutes ?
    Thanks In advance
    Eldad

    Set the Wait Mode attribute of the activity to Relative Time, and set the Relative Time attribute to the relative time interval
    you want, expressed in <days>.<fraction of days>.

  • Visa Read Timeout Occurs with multiple Reentrant VI Calls

    I have written a test application in Labview (6.1) which will be used to test (burn-in) up to 15 serial instruments through a 16 Port USB->RS232 Hub. Here's how it works:
    When the App loads, I am transmitting a Connect command to each of 15 com ports (one-at-a-time) using VISA. If I receive the proper response from the unit on that port, I add the port to an array and continue on to the next system. Once I've found all systems on the hub, I wire my array of active Visa references to a for loop in which I open up to 15 reentrant VIs which will run in the background in parallel. Each of these reentrant VIs (all are idential with the exception of the Visa Resource they use) running in the background are sending commands to the the respective instrument and receiving a response. One Function in particular "Get Unit Status" is important and the response determines whether or not the instrument is functioning correctly. Here's the problem -- In my Main Loop, I am continuously acquiring indicator values from each of the reentrant VIs that are running in the background. After a period of time (not consistent) I will lose communication with a port (the symptom is no response from the unit). I've looked closely at the COMM engine I created and found that the Visa Write function is completing without error, then when I perform a Visa Read I immediately get the "Timeout occured before operation completed" error (please keep in mind that this occurs after 100-5000 successful attempts at writing/reading). Eventually another port will drop out, followed by another. This seems to stop occurring and the remaining systems run to completion without a problem.
    Some background on what how I'm setting up my Visa Sessions...
    When I originally scan for systems (before I load and run the Reentrant VIs)
    - Init Visa Port
    - 19200, 8, N, 1
    - Use Termination = True
    - Timeout = 400mS (I've tried larger values already) 400mS should be plenty
    - Termination Char=13 (/r)
    - Open Visa Session
    - Visa Write "CONN18/r" (the command required to connect to my instrument)
    - Visa Read with 1 for requrested byte count to read 1 byte at-a-time, concatenating the results until /r is received (or 1000mS timeout occurs -- this is not a VISA timeout) I've also tried 16 for requested byte count and just waiting for Visa to timeout -- both methods work.
    Once all 16 ports are scanned I Close ALL of the ports using the Visa Close Function.
    It is important to know at this time that I "AM" using proper wiring flow to ensure open occurs before write, write occurs before read, etc.
    I'm assuming at this time that all of my Visa sessions are closed.
    On to the Reentrant VIs:
    Inside each reentrant VI I first Initialize all of my variables and Init/Open a 'New'? Visa session using the same parameters mentioned above.
    Then I enter the "Run" case structure where all of the communication begins.
    I am using the same Communications Engine to operate the instrument as before (the only difference being that all of the VIs in the comm engine are now reentrant and operate at higher priorities) I have actually saved two different versions of the engine (one for the reentrant calls and one for when I first scan for systems from my Main GUI).
    When I init the reentrant VI, I am placing the Duplicate Visa Resource output of my Visa Open Function on a shift register. When I enter the Run case, it takes the Resource from the register on the left, wires through any Comm Engine Vis then back out to the shift register on the right and keeps going for a 12-hour period or until "Get Unit Status" has returned 60 naughty results.
    On my Main GUI I am continuously (every 500mS) I am Getting certain Indicator Values from each reentrant VI AND I am also setting some control Values on each reentrant VI. There is no VISA interaction between each Reentrant VI, and the Main GUI.
    As I said earlier, up to 15 systems will run for a time, then one will stop responding, followed by another, and another until a few remaining systems will run to completion.
    Any advice as to why I'm encountering the timeouts with the VISA read fucntion as I have metioned would be appreciated. I managed to find one suggestion which uses the Bytes at Port function to ensure there is data at the port before doing a Read otherwise, skip the read and retry the whole operation -- I haven't tried this yet.
    Sorry for the wordiness of my question. If anyone would like some screen shots of portions of my code (I can't submit the actual code because some of it is confidential) I'd be happy to post them.
    Doug.

    Hi Doug,
    The first thing I would recommend is the solution you have already found, to check and see if there is data at the port before attempting a read. I would be interested to see if this will solve the problem. Does there seem to be any trend to which ports have this timeout error? How many ports does it cut down to before operation seems to continue as expected? Does this number vary, or is it always the same number of ports? I think the best thing to do will be to identify constant attributes of how the error is occurring so that we can narrow it down and see what is going on.

  • Setting timeout for webservice

    hello all,
    I have made client program to connect to a webservice using dynamic url, my problem is i am unable to set the timeout of the webservice if anybody knows please let me know. my code is as follows.
    WebServiceClient ann = testpackage.TestClassService.class.getAnnotation(WebServiceClient.class);
    try {
    testpackage.TestClassService service = new testpackage.TestClassService(new URL("MY URL"), new QName(ann.targetNamespace(), ann.name()));
    testpackage.TestClass port = service.getTestClassPort();
    String result = port.getUserTask("HELLO");
    System.out.println(result);
    } catch (MalformedURLException ex) {
    using this code how can i set timeout at client side
    thanks in advance

    hi there thanks for your reply but your solution didn't worked for me. may be because of mistake in my question explanation i will explain it again
    WebServiceClient ann = testpackage.TestClassService.class.getAnnotation(WebServiceClient.class);
    try {
    testpackage.TestClassService service = new testpackage.TestClassService(new URL("MY URL"), new QName(ann.targetNamespace(), ann.name()));
    testpackage.TestClass port = service.getTestClassPort();
    String result = port.getUserTask("HELLO");
    System.out.println(result);
    } catch (MalformedURLException ex) {
    using this code i am calling my webservice and the function "getUserTask" which give me some output in return.
    now, what situation i am facing is whenever i make a call to the above function and if RTO occurs after the call of the function then my application comes in to a hang mode situation. and i am unable to do anything untill the reconnection of the network occurs.Either i have to wait for the reconnection or i have to terminate my applicartion.
    My desire is, i should be able to set my timeout period of a web service request. if no reply comes in the given time period then i should be able to raise any message to the user.
    I think ihave made myself a bit more clear.
    thanks for your reply once again.

  • How to get remaining time for baton after setting timeOut property

    Hello,
    Is it possible to get the remaining time for baton after setting timeOut, or do I have to maintain a separate Timer for that?
    Been following this excellent tutorial here http://tv.adobe.com/watch/adc-presents/create-shared-forms-in-livecycle-collaboration-serv ice/

    Thanks Nigel, before reading your reply, I came up with something like this, but it seems extending the Baton class is not enough, as I would need my own BatonProperty as well that uses this extended Baton class...
    Also attempted to get some help here http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7116814/actionscript3-lccs-how-to-access-property-paren t-class-protected-var/7116882#7116882
    Could this be made into a feature request for Baton and BatonProperty, se we could easily get the remaining time please?   I guess I can wait for a future release.

  • Set timeout in JSP?

    Hi, is possible to set timeout in a JSP?? For instance, when the user clicks on the a hyperlink it will open a page and after a time interval, the page will auto close and call the same JSP function to open the same page but with different values in it...

    Hmm.. do u think it will work whereby the user will just need to click on a hyperlink once, then it will pass different value to a Javascript function each time. Coz the hyperlink that the user clicks will get the values from a text file (all the values retrieved are stored in a Vector.) which is passed to the Javascript function for loading an applet. As the applet will load some data out, hence, i need to wait till the applet finish loading, then i can call the same Javascript function again, but a different value...

  • BackupExec: A timeout occurred waiting for NDMPD.NLM to init

    "Error: 1004 A timeout occurred waiting for NDMPD.NLM to initialize."
    A very common and well documented issue but every fix I have found has not worked. The list is extensive so I will start by describing the issue, then the environment and finally what I have tried so far.
    The issue
    I can not load BackupExec 9.1 or 9.2 on NetWare 6.5 SP8. The loader starts and when it gets to loading NDMPD.NLM the CPU hits 99% (reported by monitor.nlm) and BackupExec stops loading for about 80-120 seconds. The loader eventually gives up after a non-critical abend. From this point on I can not unload becdm.cdm and I generally reboot the server to clear the abend.
    BackupExec has been working on the server for about 2 years, I can not link any changes to the time it stopped working.
    It used to load reliably every time for about 1.5 years and then it started to exhibit this issue when loading 1 in 10 times. It has gradually gotten worse and now will not load at all.
    Before you say it, yes I know Symantec dropped BackupExec for NetWare years ago.
    It seems to me this can only be a hardware issue now but I'm keen to hear any other ideas?
    The environment
    * The physical server is a HP DL385 G5 (SKU 411360-371), the tape drive is an external half height HP Ultrium 448 LTO 2 (SKU DW086A) using SAS to connect to a HP SC44Ge SAS HBA (SKU 416096-B21). It has 18GB of RAM, Two quad-core AMD Opteron 2352 2.1 GHz CPU's and 5 x direct attached SAS hard drives running on the internal P400 RAID controller configured with RAID 5.
    * I can provide firmware versions if needed, the BIOS is HP A09 2009-07-11. Don't have the tape drive or HBA versions to hand.
    * The server is running VMware ESXi 4.1.0 build 260247, using a free license i.e. stand alone.
    * The VMware server uses about 50% of RAM, 70% of storage and 12% of CPU.
    * The guest is NetWare 6.5 SP8 (overlay) running as a guest with 4GB of vRAM and a single CPU. The tape drive is presented as a generic SCSI device.

    * I'm running the storage driver LSIMPTNW.HAM version 5.02, 5 Dec 2007, which is default with SP8. BackupExec 9.2 device driver becdm.cdm version 7.50, 7 Feb 2006.
    * The NetWare server sees the tape drive as an "Unbound Device Object" until becdm.cdm is loaded at which point its recognsied as "HP Ultrium 2-SCSI T65D"
    * The tape drive is listed on the BackupExec HCL - "StorageWorks Ultrium 448 LTO2" except mine is SAS not SCSI. What have I tried so far?
    * We have a rental tape drive identical to our own as the original one was over-heating, so I have tried two physical tape drives. Both using the same server, HBA and SAS tape drive cable.
    * I have used tcpcon.nlm to check that port 10,000 is unused.
    * I have tried the parameter -!X on the line of bestart.ncf that loads BackupExec to stop it checking if port 10,000 is free.
    * I have added a set statement to c:\nwserver\startup.ncf "set auto load of cdm modules = off" so it will not try to load unwanted CDM's.
    * I have renamed all copies of nwtape.cdm to nwtape.cdx on the C: so they can not be auto loaded.
    * There are no load statements in the startup.ncf for other tape drive device drivers. Just scsihd.cdm and idecd.cdm.
    * There are no tape libraries or robots involved. Its just a basic tape drive.
    * The physical and virtual server have been rebooted numerous times to ensure its not a memory issue etc...
    * I've loaded the server with no other significant modules loaded. Just the basics like eDirectory etc... and the same issue still occurs.
    * In addition to the NW65 SP8 default version of lsimptnw.ham I have tried version 5.03.01, 23 Jan 2008, from the LSI website.
    * I have deleted the original BackupExec folder from the server (sys:\bkupexec) and re-installed BackupExec numerous times.
    * I have powered off the tape drive a number of times
    * I have changed the tape drives virtual SCSI ID, presented by VMware to the NetWare guest, to be a higher number on the same virtual HBA as the virtual disk. I have also tried allocating the tape drive a virtual SCSI ID on a dedicated virtual HBA, SCSI 1:0.
    * I have deleted the SMDR config file (sys:\etc\sms\smdr.cfg) and re-created it using the command "load smdr.nlm new"
    * I have deleted the NetWare servers backup queue and the SMS SMDR Group from eDirectory and re-created the queue using the command "load qman.nlm new". Note: as its NW65SP8 the SMS RPC object does not exist and the SMS SMDR group is not re-created.
    * I have deleted the two BackupExec objects from eDirectory and re-created them by loading BackupExec using "bestart.ncf".
    * I have checked the health of eDirectory.
    * I have tried the LSI SAS and LSI Parallel virtual HBA's in the VMware guest machine.
    * I have tried adding the parameter qtags=off to the load command for lsimptnw.ham in startup.ncf.
    * I have tried the parameter -b on the line of bestart.ncf that loads BackupExec
    * I have tried loading ipxspx.nlm to stop any public symbol error messages when loading BackupExec
    * I have also tried BackupExec version 9.1 build 0306.12 and 9.1.1158.10 build 289707
    * I have built a second NetWare 6.5 SP8 server (SP8 overlay DVD, MD5 verified ISO media) using the Backup server profile during the GUI install stage. I have loaded afreecon.nlm, installed VMware tools (vmwtool.nlm) and BackupExec for NetWare 9.2.1401.5 build 287839. The same issue occurs

    Well the problem is now resolved. It was either faulty tapes (about 12 of) or two tape drives with faulty heads. We had the heads replaced in one of the drives and tested it with a new tape, it works perfectly again.

  • "Wait Function" swf works in Mac, Not in Windows

    Hi,
    I have got a Flash movie [swf file] that plays the intro
    part("Scene 1", 1) to ("Scene 1", 55), and then go to
    ("Scene 2", 1) smoothly in Mac environment. When I run the
    same swf movie in windows, it plays the intro part only and then
    stops. It does not go to Scene 2 at all.
    I am making use of a wait function in the actions.
    I changed 'frame number' ("Scene 2", 1) to 'label' ("Scene
    2", "start") and tested it again, but it still does not work in
    windows environment but runs smoothly in Mac.
    Kindly advise what is the problem exactly.

    It turns out I was wrong: this function did work. However, when I then saved the file as an SVG, Illustrator ignored the document proportions. To correct this, I had to set the export option preserveEditability = true (of all things ...). Apparently it's a feature of Illustrator CC to not include the document proportions in SVG files by default.

  • Problems with setting up the wait in a process flow

    Hi,
    I have process flow where I need to use a wait function.
    The value of minimum_delay is set to 30
    literal = true
    the value of until_date I've been trying to set to a appropriate date format that is consistent with the default in the database.
    When doing this I get the error message ORA-01841:     (full) year must be between -4713 and +9999, and not be 0
    setting the value of until_date to null and literal still true gives me the error ORA-06502:     PL/SQL: numeric or value error. Setting the literal to false also gives me this error.
    Does anyone know how I can set this up correctly? And if its possible, not use the until_date parameter.
    any help is appreciated
    regards,
    Ragnar

    Thanks for your replies:
    I've tried running the Processflow with different parameters.
    The processflow I am trying to run is in its own Module, with just one processflow, and the wait is the only activity in this.
    Its a nice mix of english and norwegian in the error messages, but I'll try to translate as best I can.

  • VISA Set I/O Buffer Size fails with all but one value on Linux RT

    I was unable to initialize a serial port on a cRIO-9030 using a code that works fine on VxWorks and Windows, when I tracked it down to this somewhat strange behaviour;
    If you call VISA Set I/O Buffer Size on Linux RT (at least on the 9030 device) you will get error code 1073676424 for all size values other than 0.
    That is a bit strange (what will the buffer size be then I might add...), but something even uglier is that if you leave the function's buffer size unwire,  you will also get the error (because the function's default is 4096).
    MTO

    Under the hood VISA is using the POSIX serial interface for Mac OS X (same as for Linux and Solaris). This interface does not support changing the buffer size. Hence, the buffer size is fixed to the internal OS buffer size. The only thing that changing the buffer size will do (for the out buffer) is to have VISA not flush the data after every write. This is a limitation in the serial API for Mac OS X. Therefore, VISA reports a warning.

  • Using the Wait function in while loops?

    Hi,
    I have a rather complicated top level VI with about 20 subVIs and the main VI has on big while loop around it and another smaller one inside, basically it runs rather slow and I have no idea how to set the wait function. I mean what factors should I consider..what would be the difference between setting it to 10 and 100 (besides the obvious 10ms vs 100ms)? I just want to increase the performance of the executable, so it is not that slow. Can you offer some hints as to what I need to take into consideration when determining my delay? And also, are while loops the only place that I should use the delay or are there other instances too?

    Adding waits is not a fix-all for slow running applications. Its just one thing that can be done to improve things. If you determine that a sub-vi is causing your problems then you need to find out exactly what that vi is doing to slow you down. If its because there is a loop inside it that is running constantly as fast as it can, then a delay in that loop may help. If that is not your problem then you need to look at other ways to boost performance. It sounds like you have alot of locals variables, each instance of a local variable makes a copy of the data that's in the control. If the controls/indicators that you have local variables of contain large amounts of data then you may be filling up memor
    y with copies of it.
    I suggest that you study the "Performance and Memory Management" chapter of the LabVIEW manual. This can found in the printed manual of the older versions, in the online manuals that install with 6i, or on NI's web site here: http://zone.ni.com/devzone/conceptd.nsf/2d17d611efb58b22862567a9006ffe76/732cec772aa4fbe586256a37005541d3?OpenDocument , which is Application Note 168. This should give you some good ideas of what to look for to improve your performance.
    Hope this helps.

  • Wait functionality in Workflow

    Hi Everyone,
    I was trying to implement the wait functionality in a workflow. I did the following.
    1) Changed the Node type to Relative Time and value to 1 minute.
    2) Changed the status to Timeout in the workflow for that Notification.
    3) In my pl/sql package, i have written as follows:
    IF (FUNCMODE IN ('TIMEOUT')) THEN
    WF_ENGINE.Background('WorkflowItemName', NULL, NULL, FALSE, TRUE, FALSE);
    RESULT := 'COMPLETE:APPROVE';
    END IF;
    Now, even after waiting for more than a minute, the notification is not going to the next level. Can anyone please give suggestions??
    Thank you
    Jim

    Hi,
    Let's start with the original post - you don't need to have anything in the code that performs differently in TIMEOUT mode, unless you want specific logic to fire when the timeout transition is taken. As you've found, you need to run the background engine for that item type in order to move the process on.
    You can perform whatever logic you want on the timeout transition. Sounds like you want to resend the notification to the original recipient and also to the next recipient at the same time (which could be problematic...). However, there are two ways that you could model this.
    1 - Timeout transition returns back to the original notification, so that notifies the original recipient. A parallel timeout transition determines the next recipient and then goes to a different (identical) notification. You then have two notifications open at the same time, so you need to include an "OR" activity so that only one of those can move the process onto the next step. This is not something that I would advocate.
    2 - Timeout transition goes to a new PL/SQL activity. In that activity, retrieve the current responder and the next one, and add them to an adhoc role. Then transition back to the notification, but send it to that adhoc role now. The question really is whether you accept a response from either of those recipients, or does one take precedence over the other? If you are accepting a response from either, then do not tick the "Expand Roles" checkbox, and the standard functionallity will process the first response that comes in. If not, then expand the roles and you will need to have a post notification function for the notification to determine what happens for each response.

  • How to run vi continuously when VISA read timeout happens

    Hello,
    I am using LabView 2010 to read an Agilent 6000 series Oscilloscope. The Oscilloscope reads data from another experimental machine which fails occasionally due to sample failure. When the machine fails, it stops sending signal to the oscilloscope and leads to the VISA read timeout error and the whole vi is terminated.  Is there a way that I can continuously run the vi when the error happens? For example, when the error happens, it stores the error in the error wire. When the vi read the error code from the wire, it sends a command to stop my experimental machine then stop the vi.
    So far, it just simply stops during executing the visa read function. In this case, why do we have error in and out? The vi simply stops when the error happens.
    Thanks
    Lawrence
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    I'll start of with automatic error handling. By default, LabVIEW enables the automatic error handling. So consider the case like the one below,
    If let's say the VISA Read returns an error, but you did you pass the error information to VISA Close, what will happen is that LabVIEW will highlight the VISA Read (since the error comes from that function), pause the execution at the VISA Read and an error dialog box will appear. From the dialog box, it will prompt to either continue (Move on to the VISA Close) or stop (LabVIEW will stop the VI at VISA Read)
    Now, consider another scenario like this,
    By passing the error information from one function to another, let's say if VISA Read returns an error, that error will pass to VISA Close and finally to Simple Error Handler.vi. So Simple Error Handler will generate error dialog box after all the VISA operation is completed. This is called manual error handling (It can be enabled by just wiring the error information from one function to another and terminates at Simple Error Handler).

    As for VISA Close, here is the information about VISA Close.
