i completely changed my envoirenment to arch linux, including my homeserver.
most things are absolutely cool with arch, but now i have a problem with installing VMWare Server 2.
When running the installer vmware-config.pl i got following output:

so iam a beginner and can not figure out where the problem is.
i looked around the internet and on the arch wiki but didnt find a sollution - there are often problems with module compilation with newer kernels, therefore there a patches, but not for my kernel.
some people say, that VMWare Server 2 modules compiling fine with the 2.6.30 kernel.. maybe i have another problem.
is this path correct for kernel headers?
What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running
kernel? [/lib/modules/2.6.30-ARCH/build/include]
I hope someone can help me.

cool, i found a patch and installation works fine now !
vmware-server.2.0.1_x64-modules-2.6.30-fix.sh
and
vmware-server.2.0.1_x64-modules-2.6.30-fix.patch
what i did:
wget both files to /tmp
#cd /tmp
#vi vmware-server.2.0.1_x64-modules-2.6.30-fix.sh
and change the VMMODDIR variable to my fits (cause i installed vmware server somewhere else)
#./vmware-server.2.0.1_x64-modules-2.6.30-fix.sh
#cd vmwareserverdir/bin/
#./vmware-config.pl

  • Updated PKGBUILD for vmware-server-modules 2.0.2

    Hi.
I have updated the PKGBUILD for the vmware-server-modules and added patches for kernel 2.6.35 and 2.6.36.
The package is currently marked as an orphan, so I'll have to adopt it do upload the changes, right?
Could someone please take a look at this, and say if it is good enough.
I haven't really made any changes other than adding patches for kernel 2.6.35 and 2.6.36, but since there are some 'not so positive comments' following this package in AUR maybe there is more that should be done?
It works on my x86_64 2.6.36-arch install.

Trying again... I haven't been able to find a solution.  Is there something else I should be doing to install vmware-server and vmware-server-modules?

  • VMware-server: Any way to get this to work? Kernel issues! SOLVED

    Hi all,
I am trying to get VMware server installed, but am having a lot of difficulty.
According to multiple sources of information, I am told I need to install vmware-server-modules first.
When I try to install, yaourt gives the following error: error: target not found: kernel26>=2.6.32.
When I try to install vmware-server, yaourt gives the error error: target not found: kernel26>=2.6.29.
    FYI:
    $ uname -r
    3.2.5-1-ARCH
The Wiki deals with VMware Player and Workstation, but not Server. There is a forum/aur information relating to installing Server which is quite old (mostly 2010, some 2011), however given I am running an up-to-date kernel I seem to be hitting a dead end. Is there anyone who knows how to get this working?
    I have seen:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=101982
    https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=6182
I have tried VirtualBox in the past but have had issues getting the networking properly configured, so VMware remains my preference. If there are other decent virtualisation options I am willing to listen.
Your assistance would be much appreciated!

Thank you for your posts. My own research and your comments has convinced me that VMware Server is not the right way forward nowadays.
    EXSi:
I have an unused  box (Dell GX620 usff) which seems like it would be suitable to run EXSi and 2-3 VMs, but no more due to RAM limits of 4GB on the mobo. I THINK its 64-bit, but not 100% sure - knowing this is an EXSi requirement for recent versions is somewhat annoying. Also, from what I understand, there is no native Linux control application (vSphere is Windows only, right?), which makes VMware feel entirely like the wrong choice for me.
    Citrix XenServer:
This looks promising - does anyone use this?
    VirtualBox:
I hear your comments ... maybe its time to do some reading on this. Seems like I'll only get it to work if I take the time to do it right. As usual, so no suprises there Given that it will be easier to experiment on my usual system than have to spend time on a new box, I think I'll investigate this first.
Please feel free to leave further comments on this subject - I'm still interested in your experiences. It will however, be marked as SOLVED, as VMware-server is out.

On my work i am testing the windows version, and sofar it looks good.
It lacks the team features of VMware Workstation, but has perl scripting support, a C API and the console allows you to connect to VMware server installations on other machines.
I think many people who now use VMware workstation can switch to VMware server without problems.

I'm assuming nobody's been able to PKGBUILD this yet? I tried myself, using Mikos' vmware-workstation as a starting point, but I couldn't get it going, and as I needed it in a hurry, I installed it the (ab)normal way instead i.e. using VMware's install script. I will have another crack at it at some stage (if nobody else gets there first), but in the meantime, I've built myself a new kernel, and it occurred to me that we really should have a separate package for the kernel modules, as we do with other apps that come with their own module(s) e.g. wlan-ng, lirc, unionfs, etc.
So here it is. It saved me the hassle of running the entire config script again, just to get two kernel modules. Others may or may not find it useful. I'm not putting it in the AUR for the moment, in case someone else comes along with a conflicting "full service" PKGBUILD.
Change the _kernver variable to match the kernel you want to build for.

  • VMWare Workstation not able to compile modules

I have an installation of vmware workstation that I don't use very often, and recently it hasn't been able to start due to an error with the module compiling process.
    The specific error is:
    2014-02-26T14:39:15.967-06:00| appLoader| W110: Unable to load libgcr.so.0 from /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libgcr.so.0/libgcr.so.0: /usr/lib/libgcrypt.so.11: version `GCRYPT_1.2' not found (required by /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libgcr.so.0/libgcr.so.0)
    2014-02-26T14:39:15.967-06:00| appLoader| W110: Unable to load dependencies for /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libvmware-modconfig.so/libvmware-modconfig.so
    2014-02-26T14:39:15.967-06:00| appLoader| W110: Unable to execute /usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-modconfig.
I noticed that gcrypt got updated to 1.6.1 from 1.6.0-2 on the Jan 31st, so I tried downgrading it to the previous version but the same error happened, so it is not an upgrade that has caused the problem.
Yes, the file does exist, and yes, I have reinstalled workstation.
    Specs:
    Arch Linux x64
    Kernel: 3.12.13-1-ck
    Processor: i7-3840QM
I have been wrangling with this for a couple of days now and I'm out of ideas.

I had the same issue and i have modify the wiki
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/VMware
Check this to apply some patch to compile again on your arch
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/VM … Linux_3.13
if you use DKMS check the following session
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/VM … he_modules
    sorry for my poor english
PS: if you compile your module with "vmware-modconfig --console --install-all" you can have an issue due to the headers path change, to resolve it you can try this command
    $ vmware-modconfig --console --install-all -k $(uname -r) $(vmware-modconfig --console --get-gcc) /usr/lib/modules/$(uname -r)/build/include

  • Tarball for vmware-server-modules' PKGBUILD missing [SOLVED]

Edit: I realized that my subject line was mis-leading
    Hello,
I've been an arch user for several months now. Amazingly, I've been able to work my way through all the problems I've had thus far (due, in large part, to the arch community and wikis). This is my first time actually posting for help.
I've been trying to install VMware-Server on my latest install of arch, when I run a 'makepkg' on the vmware-server-modules package I get:
==> ERROR: VMware-server-2.0.2-203138.x86_64.tar.gz was not found in the build directory
    and is not a URL.
A link to the missing tarball can be found on the vmware-server-2.0.2 AUR page (http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=6182), however, when I click on the link, it 404's. I've done multiple Google, vmware.com, and archlinux.org/forum searches and have found nothing. I'm at a complete loss for what to do at this point. I really can't find anything of use on the subject, am I the only person who's had/having this problem? Any help/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Turns out I'm just retarded. That's the actual vmware-server package from the VMware download site, which I actually downloaded and unpacked in search of the file itself For those who looked at this post, could no one have just gone, "Hey dumbass, it's the actual file from the VMware site."?

  • Error with compiling module

I have such folders structure in my Flex project:
    components/classes/
    components/modules/
    In modules/ folder I have a module (<mx:Module>)
    myModule.mxml.
That module imports class myConnector.as from classes/ folder
    using statement:
    import components.classes.myConnector;
I can work with class' properties and methods and there are
no errors. But when I try to compile myModule.mxml with mxmlc using
    command:
    mxmlc
    pathToProject/components/modules/myModule.mxml
    I get an error:
Type was not found or was not a compile-time constant:
    myConnector.
    private var myConn:myConnector;
As I see compiler cannot locate myConnector.as class, even
though it is located correctly while authoring.
How can specify path to that class for compiler?
Or there is anything else wrong?
    Thanks in advance.

The answer is yes and no. Since your Modules are not in the
main application directory, the answer is no. Should they live in
the main application directory, then you can mark them as
Applications and Flex Builder will automatically compile them and
move them to the bin directory.

  • Compile module for Oracle VM Server

I need to install the the RDAC multipath driver.
To do this I need to compile the driver module. I have installed kernel-ovs-devel-2.6.18-8.1.6.0.18.el5.i686.rpm but when now I need the gcc compiler --- and propably other stuff as well.
How can I install the gcc compiler on the ovs system ? Or how can I compile the rdac module for the Oracle VM server ?
I have read somewhere that the Oracle VM server is based on EL5 --- but how can I use this information to compile the driver ?

I don't like suggesting thing "a" when people like to get an answer for "b" - however, lets go :)
OracleVM comes with device mapper multipathing. This is a general multipath driver. You can use this as an alternative to RDAC.
Advantages: Runs on most stoarges and you don't need tom compile modules.
Setup is also very easy. Just install the device-mapper-multipath package from the OracleVM CD. run "chkconfig multipathd on". Comment out the "blacklist" section in /etc/multipath.conf. Reboot. And then you should see devices in /dev/mapper.
Just use those devices instead of /dev/sdX and you have multipathing. You can verify this by cable pulling. Also execute "multipath -l" so see what's happening.
    Regards,
    Robert
p.s. For GCC you probably need gcc, glibc-devel, libgcc, libgomp and maybe some more, but just try to install gcc - it tells you what packages are missing. Then just install those from the Oracle Enterprise Linux 5 CD.
