VNIC Manager arbitrary MAC addresses?
Hi,
is there a way to enter arbitrary MAC addresses using the VNIC Manager in OVM Manager 3.0.3? I need to migrate a few machines to OVM (both physical and virtual) where I need to maintain the existing MAC address. Unfortunately the WUI only allows to specify the last 3 words of the MAC. Is there any way around this so I can specify the complete MAC?
Thanks,
Bernd
This is going to depend on how Oralce numerates the PCI BUS. That will dictate which PCI device the OS sees in which order.
You can try manipulating the order using a vNIC placement policy. This will allow you to ensure certain vNIC/vHBAs appear first on the PCI BUS for the host.

Robert

IPS 4240 management interface MAC address
Hi All,
I am using DHCP in my network. And i need to reserve one IP for the Management Interface of the IPS.
I tried to get the MAC but couldn't. It is not even on the Show tech-support.
Can any please tell me how to get the MAC of Management interface of IPS?If the show interface output is not giving you this information, you can logon via service account and run the 'ifconfig -a' command. Just make sure you do a 'su -' otherwise this command won't be available.
Please rate if helpful :)

Unable to clone zone on solaris11 (MAC address is already in use )
I have an x86 box running solaris11_FCS which I want to use for cloning zones. I have a 'gold' zone with my exact setup (mysql/tomcat + java application) and I want to be able to clone this so that I can preserve the 'gold' zone and mess around with the clones knowing I can recreate them at will
I created 2 vnics (one for my gold zone and one for a new clone)

root>dladm create-vnic -l net0 vnic2
root>dladm show-vnic

what does this error mean? The 2 vnics have different MAC addresses (see output from dladm above) ??
Also - how can I take the image from my 'gold' zone and install a zone on a separate machine from that image?See if this helps:

WLC - How to block a single client MAC address?
Hi Sir,
On a WLC (software version 4.1.185.0), how to block a single client MAC address?
I thought of using the SECURITY -> Disabled Clients. Is it right?
There are currently 250 users connected to the WLC. MAC Filtering is not a scalable solution because as I understand it, we have to specify all the legitimate MAC addresses in the local database.
Thank you.
B.Rgds,
Lim TSHi Lim,
As you have discovered, the Mac filtering on the WLC is an Allow (based on Mac address) rather than what you need which is a Deny (based on Mac address). I have not tried this feature but I think you are on the right track in using the Exclusion List (Blacklist) feature. Have a look;
Use SECURITY > AAA > Disabled Client then click New or MONITOR > Clients then click Disable to navigate to this page.
This page allows you to manually Exclusion List (blacklist) a client by MAC address.
Add the MAC Address and an optional Client Description for the client to be disabled.
Note When you enter a client MAC address to be disabled, the Operating System checks that the MAC address is not one of the known Local Net clients ( Local Net Users), Authorized clients ( MAC Filtering), or Local Management users ( Local Management Users) MAC addresses. If the entered MAC address is on one of these three lists, the Operating System does not allow the MAC address to be manually disabled.
Hope this helps! Let us know.

Does anyone have more information on how Sun is generating MAC adresses for guest/IO/service domains and is their concern that this method will potentilly create duplicates in the enterprise.
I have seen where there is a range of MAC addrs Sun has set aside for manual assignment to LDOMs, however that does not solve the issue of managing MAC addresses across potentially thousands of LDOMs to prevent duplicates?I'll have to look again, but I believe there is a calculation that is explained in the admin guide or in the Blueprints doc. Obviously this means there is the potential of MAC address collision. You can manually edit the MAC address, which is also in one of the docs I mentioned.

VNic Mac addresses not associated correctly when installing OVM Server
We are trying to get our first Oracle VM environment running and noticed that on the UCS the mac assocated with eth0 ended with 0B but on the Oracle install the eth0 interface mac address ends with 08. The mac for eth3 on the Oracle install lines up with what the UCS sees as eth0. How do we correct this and ensure the interfaces line up so that eth0 on the UCS is eth0 on the Oracle service profile ?
This is going to depend on how Oralce numerates the PCI BUS. That will dictate which PCI device the OS sees in which order.
You can try manipulating the order using a vNIC placement policy. This will allow you to ensure certain vNIC/vHBAs appear first on the PCI BUS for the host.

MAC address for managed laptops
We have 200 laptops that were configured via Ethernet, but now connect over Airport. This has caused a problem in that the managed features use the MAC address of the Ethernet adapter instead of the Airport adapter. Is there any way to rectify this other than adjust each by hand?

ARP table not populating mac address for previously reachable IP address
Router has been online and working fine with one BGP neighbor for almost 2 years and no downtime. 2 weeks ago, added a 2nd BGP peer. Everything worked fine for 2 weeks, then all of a sudden yesterday the 2nd BGP peer is disconnected and does not come back. ISP checks and sees everything looks fine on their end. We cannot even ping each other now.
Upon investigation, the ARP table is not even populating the MAC address for the BGP peer IP anymore (same local subnet). Stays "incomplete" in the table no matter what we do, including clearing arp table, changing IP address, etc.
Plug a laptop directly into the 2nd BGP peer FE port and replicate the IP addressing. Laptop cannot ping Router, but Router CAN ping laptop. Check ARP table, but STILL no mac address assigned and now not even the ARP table showing "incomplete".
Thinking it could be the FE interface, switch to the 2nd FE interface and perform same laptop test, this time with arbitrary IP addressing. Now cannot ping each other, no MAC in ARP table.
End up rebooting the router and lo-and-behold, everything is working normally again. 2nd BGP peer peers up instantly.
I should also mention that the 1st BGP peer worked flawlessly throughout, taking all the Internet load and having no issues throughout.
Also, the FE ports for the 2nd BGP peer are on an HWIC FE card plugged into the router. The 1st BGP peer is plugged into the built-in GE interface. 2901 running: c2900-universalk9-mz.SPA.151-4.M4.bin
Lastly, no router resource issues, no error messages, no logs. Just the BGP peer disconnecting.
I have never, in 20 years working with Cisco routers seen something like this before. This is the most fundamental aspect of IP and Ethernet that was not working.
Has anyone ever seen this behavior before??

I have a mac which is connected to a network and is bound to both OD and AD with no issues on my server when I try to manage it through Workgroup manager it does not appear.
I have unbound it , removed it from both systems completely and even rebuilt it but it still does not appear in WGM.If your server is 10.6 and your client is 10.7 you'll have to add it manually to WGM
via mac address. 10.7 clients don"t automatically appear in 10.6 server wgm -
Spanning Tree and Admin mac address issues srw2048
Ok, I have a somewhat complex problem and hopefully someone may shed some light or have an idea as to whats wrong.
First the scenario:
I have two Cisco Cat 6509's etherchanneled to each other via two fiber cables. One of these is the STP/RSTP root. I have two SRW2048's.. one trunked to each of these 6509 switches. There is also a trunk between the SRW2048's. All this is to create a redundant topology so that if one of the switches fail's the others can still forward packets to each other. Of course the scenario described is in fact a loop that should be handled by STP/RSTP. I have RSTP enabled on all the switches in the scenario (PV RSTP on the cisco switches as they only do Cisco's brand of per vlan spanning tree). There are 3 vlan's configured on each of the srw2048's (2,55,96). There are corresponding vlan's also on the 6509's. I have put the srw2048's management interface into vlan 2.
The problem:
I need to forward packets between the srw2048's primarily and only use the 6509 that is not the root when a failure happens. I have configured the non-root 6509's spanning tree cost on the etherchannel to be higher then the alternate path through the srw's to the root. I can hook everything up and view the spanning tree and see that the srw2048's interface that goes to the non-root 6509 is blocked, and all other interfaces on the other switches are forwarding. I can in fact ping and get to the admin interface on all the switches. Then for some strange reason the admin interface of the srw2048 plugged into the non-root 6509 stops responding. If I disable either the interface its plugged into on the 6509 or the other srw2048 everything starts working again. Sometimes it responds after many failures for no apparent reason. I looked into the mac-address table on the 6509's and they are conflicting, pointing to each other for the mac-address of the broken srw2048. When I clear the mac-table the admin port comes back for about 5 seconds then again goes dark. When reviewing mac-table on the 6509's they are back to pointing to each other. The odd thing (although I haven't confirmed this completely) is that hosts placed into vlan 2 on that same srw2048 seem to work fine. If there was an STP loop or something misconfigured, I would expect it to effect any host in vlan 2 or the other vlan's for that matter on the srw2048 that stops responding. Alas, I am stuck because I need to manage this switch remotely. My only thought is that for some reason even when the STP status is blocked the broken srw2048 is still sending out arp's of its admin interface and bypassing the STP protocol. I have no way to confirm this, but maybe someone has an idea as to what I'm doing wrong, or otherwise offer a solution. For now, I simply removed vlan 2 from the 6509 that the broken srw2048 is plugged into and everything seems fine.
My apologies for such a long post, but this is somewhat complicated. Thanks in advance for any info.
-Geoff
Message Edited by gmyers on 08-19-2008 10:35 PMTo follow up, I had a ticket open with Linksys about this for about 3 months with no resolution. I submitted packet captures, stp outputs, etc and no luck. I gave up and basically had to revert to a manual failover for redundancy. It's no perfect or fast, but it works every time.
Unless linksys issues a firmware upgrade with this as a fix, I doubt we will be able to ever resolve this on our own. -
How can I tell Apple to store my MAC-address of my Wifi Router in there location DB?
Hello
Recently I bought a new Wifi Router and when I use the Maps App it tells that my ipad is located in China (Shangai)
When I also want to use the automatic timezone feature in the preferences app it indicates that my ipad is in China (Shangai)
I have already searched for a number of discussions (in and out the Apple Support) and their I found that the problem is in a location DB managed by Apple (crowd-sourced database). It seems that my Wifi Router is registered with a wrong location. :-(
my questions :
.- is the somebody that can give me a procedure (certified by Apple) how I can update this location DB?
.- How can I store my Wifi Router MAC address with the correct location in this DB?
Already thanks in advance
Kindly regards

How to sync iPhone 4 contacts to Mac address book
Hello!
I can sync all my contacts from the Mac address book on my MacBook Pro to my iPhone 4. However, why does it not sync the iPhone contacts to the Mac address book? Should it not be like a two way sync? I was looking at the syncing options but it does give that option. I just want to make sure that I have the same contacts on my iPhone and Mac. I do understand that MobileMe does that. But till I can afford to have MobileMe, maybe there is another solution?
Anybody... help!I had a major drama doing this last night, have managed to restore my Address Book file with a backup after I mistakenly wiped all the contacts I had created on my iPhone. Yikes! I suggest when you sync your iPhone leave it plugged in after the sync until you check that the contacts are all where they should be. That way, the most recent backup that is done automatically when you plug in the iPhone will still have all your iPhone contacts should something go amiss and they can be restored. Also export your computer's Address Book (File>Export in Address Book) which should land in your Documents folder.
To get all my iPhone's contacts back into my Mac's Address Book, I created a group in my Mac Address Book called 'iPhones contacts'. When I synced the iPhone with my Mac, (Info tab>Sync Address Book Contacts in iTunes), I checked the box that says 'Add contacts created outside of groups on this iPhone to...' and checked the new 'iPhone contacts' group and when I synced, all the new contacts on the iPhone landed in my Mac's Address Book. Phew. Heartstopper! -
Ethernet MAC address has changed and I can no longer connect to the network
I have a new iMac, 21.5" running 10.6.4. It was purchased in the past month.
I am using it on an ethernet network and using DHCP to obtain the address. It has been working for the past few weeks. I turned it on today and it is failing to connect. After some digging around, it seems that the MAC address (Ethernet ID) has been reset to 00:10:18:00:00:00. This is different to the one it has been using last week.
I have not changed any network settings. Airport is working fine.
If I pull out the ethernet cable and reinsert, the machine tries to obtain an IP address. After a while, it returns with a self-assigned IP Address.
Last week, I did notice that it was taking a relatively long time (a minute or so) to obtain the IP address over ethernet. Plugging the same ethernet cable in a macbook, I am able to obtain the IP address for the macbook much more quickly.
I see that I could use ipconfig to change the interface address to what I believe is the correct address. Would this be sensible?
Why would the machine have reset the MAC address anyway?
Regards,
NeilDear all,
I am having the same problem with a new MacBook Pro, bought end of October - for me it became apparent for software (Matlab, Comsol) that are registered with a licence file which was created based on the MAC address, and also when trying to register the computer to the company network. That software will only work those times that the computer "knows" its real MAC. Also, I found that audible audio books, managed through itunes, will not synchronize with the ipod at those times when the MAC address is at the producer's default (00:10:15:00:00). I never had network issues other than this computer registration, - no probs at home or elsewhere - , so it will depend on the individual setup which issue users observe.
I have had long phone discussions with different Apple support people, they have done checks based on Capture Data that I sent to them via email, etc.. They can't find the problem in the software/setup and they advised me to go the Genius Bar and have those guys look at the computer's guts.
Restarting sometimes did set the MAC to the real one, also running the code that someone suggested in Terminal sometimes helped.
Other than that, looking through the web, it does not seem to be an Apple-unique problem, but certainly one would like to see support to take care of that issue for Macs soon.
Also, thanks a lot for this thread! Otherwise the support guys on the phone would not have believed my : "the Mac address changes on a daily basis" and would just have brushed me off.
All the best,
Susanne

Hi, when I intalled the software ot interface my BB with my MAC Pro it screwed everything up. In order to organize everything it asks me for my .MAC address, something which hasn't existed for years. I I can't even use one of the enw MAC addresses bacause the ".MAC" part of the address is hard-written into the form!
Also, it is now opening Entourage, instead mf my MAIL program. I have absolutely no use for this if it ins't part of a larger interface which permits me to coordinate my calendars...
How can I at least get back to zero, and preferable take advantage of the features I bought this stupid phone for?Well, quite honesly, I don't believe Entourage is on the BlackBerry CD provided with the device. So I still don't know what all is going on.
ON your BlackBerry disc, you might have installed PocketMac?
I would recommend UNinstalling it if you did, and instead download and install a more recent version from here:
https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=A8BAA56554F96369AB93E4F3BB068C22
Entourage is akin to MS Outlook, only for the Mac. And, Entourage is a product of Microsoft as well. For issues with Entourage, I would contact or look for the Entourage user forums.
Sometime this month, rumored soon, BlackBerry will introduce it's Mac-compatible Desktop Manager application. From what I have read and heard, you will be pleased with it.
