VSphere High Availability with local storage

I am building a small virtualization system utilizing vSphere 6.0.  The system will only be running about 10 VMs.  I plan to use two ESXi hosts with Essentials Plus.
Unfortunately High Availability is a requirement.  Due to the system being small, I'd like to avoid a SAN if possible and use local storage.  I know I could use vSphere Replication, but if the host that is running vCenter fails, my understanding is that you're unable to restore the replica.
Is there anyway to achieve HA without using a SAN or shared storage?
Thanks!
This topic first appeared in the Spiceworks Community

In that field, no ip is configured at all.
We have other sites were HA is working perfectly and checked them, they also have this field empty.
EDIT: I inserted the IP address, but HA still times out

  • VSphere 6, can't use FT with local storage

    Hi guys,
Now that I have figured out that when turning on FT without shared storage results in no datastores being shown in the FT dialog box in the web client, I've run into a different problem (thus the new discussion topic).
When I turn on FT for a VM that is on local storage, I am now able to select the datastores, but when I select local storage for the secondary VM, I get a bunch of errors that tell me the secondary host can't reach the .vmx file (of course - that's why I needed the shared storage - for these little files). Shouldn't FT be copying the .vmx file and whatever else it needs to be shared to the right spot, since I've told it where that is? Do I need to move my VM to shared storage, then move my VMDKs and stuff to local storage manually?
Here's a screenshot of the dialog:
    Here's the current hardware setup:
    ESX1:
    - IP: 192.168.220.51
    - Datastores: ESX1-LocalStorage and NFS
    ESX2:
    - IP: 192.168.220.52
    - Datastores: ESX2-LocalStorage and NFS
My primary VM for FT is on ESX2, and trying to get my secondary on ESX1.
    Thanks!

The availability guide isn't accurate (I'll work on getting it corrected). The requirements for FT storage are:
    - Shared storage: FT config file, tie-breaker file, primary VM vmx file
    - Local storage: all other files (VMDKs, etc).
The limitation with this however is that FT can't move or replicate your VM files to a new location, so if the host where the primary VMs VMDKs are stored is unavailable FT won't be able to spin up a new secondary.
    Example:
    3 hosts (A, B, C)
Primary VM running on A - VMDKs stored on local storage
Secondary VM running on B - VMDKs stored on local storage
If host A fails, the secondary on B will take over and become primary. However, until host A comes back on-line FT will not be able to create a new secondary.
    Does this make sense?
    Hi, gs_khalsa,
That does make sense. It isn't all that I think people were hoping it'd be. I think a lot of people were envisioning setting up 2 or 3 hosts in a small environment with no shared storage, and using FT as a share-nothing setup that would ensure a VM never goes down as long as at least one host is alive and the VM isn't corrupted. It's 99% there, but the need for shared storage (that is presumably HA storage, since we don't want the storage to be our single point of failure) for 3 little files kills the vision. FT not being able to spin up a new secondary on a 3rd host seems like it could have been done, too, since FT obviously knows how - it just doesn't automatically assume it should use that 3rd host. Maybe it's more complex that it sounds to actually achieve. At least we have multiple vCPU support now, which is a big step forward. Maybe these smaller milestones will come about in sub-version upgrades *crosses fingers*.
By the way, I appreciate your responses - they've been very helpful in understanding how what I thought the new FT was and where that idea is off target. Thank you.

  • HANA High Availability System Vs Storage Vs VIP failover

    Dear Experts,
Hope your all doing great. I would like to seek your expertise on HANA high availability best practice. We have been deciding to use TDI for BW on HANA. The next big question for us is how make it available atleast 99.99%.
I was going through multiple documents, SDN forums, etc..but would like to see how the experts are performing in real time.
    My view -
Virtual IP failover is a common HA practice which have been used to failover CI / DB hosts depends on failure/maintenance. In this case, both nodes can be used to run app servers.
System replication - HANA based required secondary standby node, which doesn't accept user requests, but replicate the database from primary using logs after initial data snapshot either synchronous or Asynchronous. (Can be used as HA or DR - if servers are between different data centers).
Storage replication - HANA based required secondary standby node, which replicates SAN for HA/DR.
Could you please provide your expertise method you followed for HANA HA and what are the pros, cons and challenges that you have faced or facing.
    Thanks

Do you know any specific doc that describes the installation and configuration steps of 10g RAC on NAS? If possible, can you provide some link that I could use to perform this task?
I have done RAC installations on SAN without any problems and its something I'm fairly experienced with. With NAS I am not really comfortable since I can't seem to find any documentation that describes step by step installation procedure or guidelines for that matter.
    Thank you for your input

  • High Availability with two 5508 WLAN controllers?

    Dear all,
we are considerung to implement a new wireless solution based on Cisco WLC 5508 and 1262N Access Points. We are planning to purchase about 30 access points and have two options: Either purchase one WLC 5508-50 or, for redundacy, two 5508-25 controllers.
Is it possible to configure two WLC 5508 as a high availability solution so all Access Pointes are distributed over both WLCs and in the case one WLC breaks the other one manages all APs?
If we have 30 access points and one of two WLC 5508-25 breaks of course not all 30 but only 25 access points can be managed by the remaining one. Is there some sort of control to choose which access points shall be managed and which not?
How does such a configuration look like in general, is the implementation of a two controller setup rather complex or straight forward?
    Thanks!
    Michael

    Dear Nicloas,
thanks for your reply. We have an offer where two 5508-25 are only a little more expensive than one 5508-50. So I think it's better so spend a little more money and have a backup WLC. Otherwise, if the one and only WLC breaks, all APs are unusable which would not be acceptable for us.
Regarding roaming - not all access points will distribute the same WLAN. Actually we will have one wireless network with 18 access points for our warehouse and 12 access points for the internal and guests network. Therefore no roaming will happen between those APs. In this case I could use one WLC for the 18 warehouse access points and 12 for the internal network. In the case one controller breaks, I could use the remaining one for the important warehouse systems (i.e. by using the priority system).
Regarding the configuration: If I understand correctly I configure both controllers exactly the same (except for the name and IP address of course) and put both controllers in the same mobility group - and that's really it? Sounds great!
I have one general question regarding the new WLC controllers: Is it true that communication between the WLC and the APs is now done on Layer 3 only so all APs need an IP address? I'm asking because currently we are still using an Cisco 4112 WLC which operates in Layer 2 mode. So I guess with the new WLC, I have to configure DHCP option 43 with the management IP address of the WLC, right? I also guess I can manually move APs from one to another WLC once they have joined a controller for the first time?
I'm ordering the book "Deploying and Troubleshooting Cisco Wireless LAN Controllers" now and guess this will answer most of my upcoming questions. Can I come back to you here in case I run into trouble with the configuration?
Thanks a lot for your help

  • When will a 70D model be available with extra storage slots and audio headphone jack?

Really like this camera, but I'm reluctant to buy it because it is missing the above noted features.  Seems like a no-brainer to me if Canon wanted to stomp the D7100, but what do I know.  Any chance an upgraded model will come out in the next year?

I suppose there's a chance, but I'd call it unlikely.  Early on the XXd series had a lifecycle of about a year and a half, but the 60D was released in 2010 and was just replaced by the 70D.  Although nobody knows ultimately what the Canon overlords will decide to do, in general they try to extend the lifecycle of the more advanced cameras while pushing out 'new' Rebels every year regardless of whether or not there's something new.
As far as an audio jack, who knows.  Canon seems to try to limit features on different models to encourage upgrading.  I could see them using 'serious videography features' to try to push people into something like a 7d2 or 5d3.

  • Problems With the High Availability

    Hi all,
First of all, i'm sorry for my "bad" english, but i will to try to explain my problem as clairly as i can.
I'm using VDI 3.1.1 ,a configuration "High Availability with bundled MySQL" with a primary server and 2 secondary servers.
i'm trying to test the HA for the core VDI and FailOver for the VirtualBox, The HA works but i think with a timeout (=2minutes) that i want to reduce.
I found some troubles with the VirtualBox failover.
    Here is more explaination :
These Tests are done with the VRDP mode.
The first test after the installation&configuration, the failover works fine after the crash of server A, the desktops migrate and restart in the other server (the server B)
The second test : i reboot the server A, and i want to test again with shuting down the server B (crash). the desktops migrate to the server A and they are with the state "running" but SRS can't deport the display (it loops on the authentication screen) ... The VM is running and i can access to it with the Remote Desktop Connection.
When i looked to the logs, i found that the SRS is always looking for the VM on the server who crashed (Server B). I looked to the vda-client command for the user concerned and it shows me that the host is the server who crashed (Server B) with the old port. I opened the MySQL,vda database and i looked the datas on the t_desktop* table, the fields* ip-or-dns* and port *were not updated when the VMs migrates. i update the two fields with an update request with the correct host (of the server A) and the new port where the VM has migrate, and the display comes in 1s.
So, the VM migrate well, but Datas on MySQL Database were not updated.
For the WRDP mode, everything works fine, because the SRS uses the IP of the VM to deport the display, not the host and port like in VRDP mode.
I test this with different configuration :
    * HA with bundled Mysql : primary server and two secondary servers. The two secondary servers contains the VDI core and the VirtualBoxes.
    * HA with bundled Mysql : the 3 vdi Cores are virtualized on a server, and Two Servers with only the VirtualBoxes.
    * One Server with VDI Core, and Two Servers with only the VirtualBoxes to test only the failover of virtualbox.
All of this tests gave the same results.
    My questions :
1 - After a crash of a server and after reboot, is there anything to do? (i checked all the vda services "database, webservices ..." and everything is ok after the reboot).
2 - Is there a bug for the HA with the VRDP mode?
3 - Is anybody had the same problems? if yes, what is the solution?
4 - How can i reduce the timeout for the HA of VDI Core? is there any process for that?
Thank you all for your help , and again sorry for my bad english, i know i have to improve it :)

I am using VDI version 3.2. Virtualization layer is Virtuabl Box.
setup is 1 x VDI server, 2 x virtual box host , remote mysql database and shared storage backend i.e NAS
The Virtualbox session / vm does not fail over, period !
When i pull the plug on the 1st Virtualbox, all the desktops session on the down server, remains on the server
and did not failover to the other one.
Seriously , have any one managed to get the HA working ? anyone ?
see below for the cli output.
    Started 1 desktop
    root@vdihost-a:~[598]# vda provider-list-hosts virtualbox
NAME             STATUS  ENABLED         CPU_USAGE      MEMORY_USAGE  DESKTOPS
    vdi1              OK  Enabled       0% (20 MHz)      10% (1.8 GB)         0
    vdi2               OK  Enabled      1% (310 MHz)      16% (2.6 GB)         1
    Started 2nd desktop
    root@vdihost-a:~[599]# vda provider-list-hosts virtualbox
NAME             STATUS  ENABLED         CPU_USAGE      MEMORY_USAGE  DESKTOPS
    vdi1             OK  Enabled      1% (319 MHz)      17% (2.9 GB)         1
    vdi2               OK  Enabled      1% (327 MHz)      16% (2.6 GB)         1
AfterpPower cut to vdi2, but second desktop did not failover to vdi2, desktops count still 1, instead of 2
    root@vdihost-a:~[600]# vda provider-list-hosts virtualbox
NAME              STATUS  ENABLED         CPU_USAGE      MEMORY_USAGE  DESKTOPS
    vdi1               OK  Enabled      0% (140 MHz)      17% (2.9 GB)         1
    vdi2     Unresponsive  Enabled        0% (0 MHz)         0% (0 KB)         1
I really want to know if anyone has managed to get this working at all.

  • Local storage with Content viewer

I have a problem with local storage since last update of the content viewer. We create a folio with exclusive HTML5 files using some data that have to be saved on the iPad (User ID). It works very well during one month but since the last update, we have a real failure with the folio and it's gonna be the same with our custommer if we don't find the answer… Can anybody help me please !!!!!!!!!!!

    Thank you for your interest.
The folio we create is build to help doctors in work with the patients. The doctor has to fill an ID once and after that, have acces to two kinds of visit. We create a random asking to visit with support of videos or without (in fact, it's a nearly fake 'cos we control the total amount of visits with and without). Then he has to fill a form and when he push on SEND, he comes back to the first article. He saw the number of visit he already made and when he makes a new one, he don't have to put his id anymore. If we works offline, he must, at a moment, get a WIFI to send the datas from the visits he makes without connexion.
So, we use a local storage to remember the ID, the number of visits and the results of the form until he get a WIFI…
With the update, we realize that the Java Script seems not te be support anymore.
I hope you undersand my explonations with my approximative english wich s not my first language…

  • JDBC adapter connected to a DB in high availability!

    Hi folks,
I have finished my scenario File -> XI -> JDBC and now I’m preparing to transport it to QAS. I found that Data Base of QAS is in two cluster nodes. I have two hostnames to fill the parameter <b><IP address></b> and I don’t know which hostname I should use! Is it supposed use both? …or I need another one virtual?
    Connection: <b>jdbc:oracle:thin:@<IP address>:<listener port>:<instance name (database name)></b>
    Thanks in advance,
    Ricardo.

I don't know this mechanism of high availability with 2 IP, but if you really have 2 hostname you should think to a method to switch from a node to the other in easy way, deactivating one and activating the other (for instance with the <a href="http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw2004s/helpdata/en/45/0c86aab4d14dece10000000a11466f/frameset.htm">Controlling a Communication Channel Externally</a>)
I suggest you to verify how it will be in production instance: real cluster ? switch over ? virtual IP ?

  • High availibility on 2500

    Hello guys,

I configured the primary controller as the following:
In the secondary controller (AIR-CT2504-HA-K9), i'm trying to configure the Redundancy > Global Configuration parameters, but the option "Redundancy" is not available on this controller. There is anything to be activated about the license to Redundancy option become available?
The information that I have is saying that this WLC doesn't need license.
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi,
Yes it will work. But I will suggest you to configure separate manually.
Treat them as 2 separate wlc.
These WLCs are independent of each other and do not share configuration or IP addresses on any of their interfaces. Each WLC needs to be managed and configure separately.
Simply configure your standby controller to match the wireless configuration on your primary, then add the standby information to the AP (Under High Availability). When the primary controller becomes unreachable, the AP moves to the standby.
Once first wlc go down and AP will join to 2nd wlc then automatic evalu license will start.
    Hope it helps.

  • WAE Inline Adapter and High Availability

What is the recommendation to achieve high availability (and load sharing?) using two WAE's in a DC with inline adapters being used for interception rather than WCCPv2? Any ideas greatly appreciated.

    Ken,
Generally I would recommend interception with either WCCP or a L4-7 load balancer like ACE/ACE Appliance/CSM. Both of these are considered best practice for DC deployments as they both can handle high amounts of traffic, can handle WAEs going offline and can load balance many WAEs in a cluster. WCCP might be slightly more flexible where and how you can deploy it.
Both of the following interception techniques are not recommended for data centers, but I list just as FYI:
    - Inline cards in appliances can be configured in serial to give you high availability, but you don't get load balancing. The second appliance only starts optimizing traffic once the first WAE starts passing traffic through on overload. Inline interception is usually used for remote offices, however it has been deployed in DCs.
    - PBR can be configured for high availability with next-hop features, however there is no available load balancing. The first WAE has to fail completely and then a second WAE can come into play. Overloaded traffic is not optimized at all.
    Hope that helps,
    Dan

  • ASCP High Availability

How does one go about achieving high availability with Advanced Supply Chain Planning w/ R12 at the Apps Tier?
We are currently running RAC for our database tier, multiple application servers at the apps tier, and load balancing at the web tier.
However, when we upgrade to R12 and take advantage of installing ASCP on a 64 bit machine at the app tier, how can we make it highly available?
    Thanks

    Hi Nikhil,
information on High Availability you can find at [High Availability|High Availability]. Be aware that SAP does not deliver the actual High Availability software, but works together with partners on this. But a complete description on how to install on top of an HA system is in Technical Infrastructure Guide.

  • How to to make Cluster between two server 2012 Datacenter with share storage and Hyper-V role then install Exchange 2013 on each server datacenter then make DAG between Exchange servers

    Dears,
I have IBM Flex server with built in storage,
HOW to to make Cluster between two  server 2012 Datacenter with share storage and Hyper-V role then install Exchange 2013 on each server datacenter then make DAG between Exchange servers?
If there any prerequisites of the Share storage types ?and any configuration guide to deploy Cluster between two Server 2012 datacenter ?

Microsoft Failover Clusters require shared storage.  If you wish to create a failover cluster with local storage, you need to use third party software to mirror the disks and present it to the hosts (siog.com, datacore.com, starwind.com).  If you
use third party software, you will need to follow their instructions for configuring the environment.
Questions on how to configure Exchange environments are better asked in an Exchange forum.

GLBP I believe is supported on 4500 L3 sups.
How to interconnect them depends on what you're trying to accomplish.  Since you want to use GLBP, you'll need an uplink to both 4500s from an edge switch.  There are several ways to provide redundancy.
If you intend to span VLAN beyond a single edge switch, you'll want to sync your ARP and MAC-table timers to avoid unicast flooding.
