Waking 2012 Macbook Pro from sleep when on mains power

My Macbook takes ages to wake from sleep *when its on mains power* and has been left for a few hours. In contrast, it will wake instantly when on battery power, as my old 2005 ibook did.
However when on mains when you open the lid, you get a progress bar at the bottom of the screen. When this has completed, it displays the login screen but without focus or ability to move the cursor. A pinwheel revolves for a while. After the pinwheel has finished, as soon as you touch the trackpad, you get the beach ball and finally (after a total of about 45 seconds) you get to log in.
Apart from the fact that this doesn't make any sense for a slow wake up on mains and fast wake up on battery, the manner is which it is executed is so cumbersome and un-Apple I'm sure there has to be something wrong, although I've searched extensively and can't find anything to fix it (Tried resetting the SMC etc)
Any help massively appreciated!

  • Is there a way to disable previously viewed iMessages from appearing as Messages notifications when waking my MacBook Pro from sleep?

Is there a way to disable previously viewed iMessages from appearing as Messages notifications when waking my MacBook Pro from sleep?  Regardless of whether I am using iMessage from  my iPhone or iPad, when I open my MBP, I get attacked by Messages notifications for iMessages I've obviously already seen or responded to.  Is there a way to change this?  Are others having this issue?
Additionally,  previous iMessages sent or received from those  devices sometimes don't populate into the Messages window on the MBP.  I haven't been able to identify when or what causes this; sometimes it just doesn't seem to work (and I verified that the messages sent/received were, in fact, iMessages and not SMS).
Thanks - any help or insight would be appreciated!

First you need to determine what laptop model you have; then we can help you. A Mac Book Pro cannot run OS 9.1.
With your Mac booted up, click on the  at the far left of the menu. Then click on About This Mac. It will show what version of OS  you are running. What is the version?
A MBP will be running something like version 10.x.
If you are running version OS 9.x, you don't have a Mac Book Pro.

  • Can I keep my MacBook Pro from sleeping when I close the lid?

Is there a way to close the lid on my MacBook Pro without putting it to sleep so that it will continue to play music via USB to my stereo?
I want to use my Macbook Pro to play music on Amarra or iTunes via USB to a DAC connected to my stereo.  The MBP will be on a shelf in my stereo cabinet where the lid cannot remain open.  I do not wish to connect an external mouse, keyboard or display to the MBP.  Is there a way to keep playing the music with the lid closed?
    Thanks.

  • Serious problems waking up my MacBook Pro from sleep mode

I have quite frequent problems waking my MacBook Pro from sleep mode - often it results in either a black or a totally scrambled screen and only a hard reset will cure the problem (for this time). I have tried to pinpoint whether a certain program that I use last before putting the computer to sleep is responsible, but all attempts so far have failed. The error seems random, but is very annoying since one in about three or four wake-up actions are affected!
I use Parallels Desktop during the day running Windows XP, and in the evenings I use mainly Safari and Mail under OSX. The only other program always open is Mori - a notes/information management tool.
Anyone with similar problems? Any advice??
    Cheers,
    -J
    MacBook Pro 15   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hello,
I was browsing the 'downloads' section of the Apple support page and I saw a firmware update that might help you out.
It is called the "MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.2" and it is supposed to fix "several Boot Camp, start up, and wake-from-sleep issues on MacBook Pro computers."
    The web address is ( http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macbookproefifirmwareupdate12.html )
If that doesn't fix it call Apple care.
    Good Luck.

  • Could a 2012 macbook pro from the factory been loaded by the factory with both Snow Leopard AND OSX Lion?

could a 2012 macbook pro from the factory been loaded by the factory with both Snow Leopard AND OSX Lion?

I think MBPs stopped coming with Snow Leopard installed as of the late-2011 models. That's when OS X Lion started being pre-installed on MBPs. Some earlier MBP models (2010, early-2011) had a firmware update to allow Internet Recovery (command+option+r) which would allow a reinstall of OS X Lion (purchased from the App Store) with the purchaser's AppleID/password.
I don't believe SL would even install on a 2012 MBP.

  • Mid 2012 MacBook Pro 13 restarts when moved

    Hi everyone,
I have a mid-2012 MacBook Pro 13 inch that still has the factory 8gb ram and 750gb HD and the 2.9 i7. Recently i have been having issues with it restarting, the first couple of times it did it would only do it when i would move it and right before it would restart the screen would glitch a little. A little bit after that it would restart if i was running something memory intensive like converting movie files. And finally at one point it wouldnt boot up at all and would beep 3 times, after that i opened it and just swapped the the 4gb ram and it worked just fine. I also clean installed Yosemite right after that and it was fine for about a week and now its starting to restart whenever i move it again. Before everyone tells me to buy new ram or take it the genius bar I want to know if theres anything else i can do, Im in college right now and I'm not covered by applecare anymore so my budget it very limited so i would like to make those a last resort kinda thing. Thanks for your time!

An appointment at an Apple genius bar is FREE.  If repairs are needed, you will be told of the costs and you can accept or reject any repair quotes.
Based on your description, it indicates that there is a loose connection.  I would open the MBP and inspect to see if it can be located.
You might also run an Apple Hardware Test:

An error free AHT is not definitive.
    Ciao.

  • Preventing MacBook Pro from sleepting when the cover is closed

I'd like to prevent the system from sleeping when the cover is closed, at least when it is on the power supply.
Right now, it sleeps whenever the cover is closed. As a result, my nightly backup (ordinarily scheduled for the wee hours) doesn't run.
Also, I want to use the laptop at home with an external screen, keyboard and mouse, and it would be convenient to fold it up to get it out of the way when doing so.
    Thanks,
    -W.

' Overheating in clamshell mode is rearely an issue if you're running on the 9400M and the system- / resource-demands aren't particularly hectic. It is something one should always just keep an eye on though anyways - just to be safe, no?
' Otherwise - there is a pay-for (shareware) program you can download and install that will give you the facility you're looking for... I'm afraid I can't remember it's name right now though... Alternatively - and the solution I myself use - try downloading and using a mini-app called "InsomniaX" - for which I can't provide a link I'm afraid, but a Net-search will quickly turn up! It's freeware (donations possible but not required) and works great - a number of options available to tune it somewhat to your needs!
    ' This should help ya!

  • USB doesn't wake up after waking MacBook Pro from Sleep Mode

I have a problem with my new MacBook Pro.
I attach an Apple 20" cinema display to the macbook pro USB connector and then I attach my apple keyboard and mouse to my cinema display.
When I wake up my macbook from being asleep my mouse and keyboard are not activated. I have to unplug my cinema display USB connector and unplug my keyboard from the display and then plug them all back in again to get them to re-activate.
Anybody know why this is occurring, its very frustrating each time my machine goes to sleep

In that case, does the problem still exist when starting up the MBP in Safe mode and then putting it to sleep and awakening it?

  • Can I wake my Macbook Pro from Sleep with the Remote app on the iPhone?

I can't access my Macbook Pro remotely, specially after several hours of inactivity,, whenever I try to access content of my library through the remote app or the Apple TV I'm unable to wake my Macbook Pro up.
My Macbook Pro is 2012 model (the last with de CD Drive) and it's running the Maverick OS, my questions are:
    * I'm unable to find the "Unable Power Nap while plugged" option on the energy saver tab... is that because the model of my laptop doesn't support that?
    * In order to access content from my library remotely, should the "Computer Sleep" option on the energy saver be on "Never" instead of the "1 hour" that I'm currently using... or is there a way to still be able to wake up the laptop with those settings

Do you have a Bonjour Sleep Proxy server on your network?
<About Wake on Demand and Bonjour Sleep Proxy>
If you do not have a Bonjour Sleep Proxy server on your local network, then you cannot allow your Mac to go to sleep at all.  System Preferences -> Energy Saver -> Computer Sleep -> Never (slide all the way to the right).

  • Safari keeps macbook pro from sleeping.

Hi, for a few weeks, my macbook pro with snow leopard and safari 5.1 is not going to sleep by itself. I have no problems putting it to sleep.
I tried disabling Safari's extensions but didn't help. Only when safari is close does my computer fall asleep by itself.
    Any idea what to do?
    thanks

    http://s.sudre.free.fr/Software/Diablotin.html
No...  I said Safari / Extensions.
A third party preference utility may not be helping matters.
    To access Safari Extensions...
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences
    Select the Extensions tab.
If you have any installed there, turn that off, quit then relaunch Safari to test the sleep issue.

  • Logic Pro prevents MacBook Pro from sleeping

I've been having trouble of late with my MacBook Pro -- it has been refusing to go into sleep mode on its own. I sat down and did a bunch of careful experiments turning various things off and on, and I've narrowed it down to Logic Pro 8! If this application is running, my MBPro will not sleep automatically. If I exit the application, it sleeps like a baby. In any case, I can force the machine to sleep manually no problem.
I am not sure whether this problem first occurred with 10.5.4 or 10.5.5.

    Pancenter wrote:
If in fact it is Logic preventing the system from sleeping (and I think it probably is) this is new since version 8 and is probably the direct result of all the complaints version 7 received.
I'm afraid I don't find these responses to be very compelling, sorry.
First, it has always been trivially easy to turn off the sleep function on an Apple machine. Everyone who owns an Apple knows how to do this simple thing.
Second, sleep does not cause failure of any kind for properly working audio hardware and other attached devices. I have three audio interfaces connected to my machine, plus an eSATA drive, external video, and ethernet cable, and the machine sleeps and wakes up just fine. No problem. This has nothing to do with audio or real-time anything, it's just a question of writing a device driver correctly. It would be the same for a printer or a camera or anything else attached to the computer. I have one device that does not sleep and wake properly: a western digital hard drive when connected by eSATA via the ExpressCard/34 slot. Again, there's no relation to audio or recording or Logic.
I wonder if there's anyone from Apple reading this newsgroup who can comment on the actual intention. If it is indeed to disable sleep, it would be nice to know. If on the other hand, it's unintentional, maybe it means that some other setting is wrong or there's something to be done about it.
    Thanks,
    -Luddy Harrison

  • My Mail app opens unprompted everytime i reboot or awake my macbook pro from sleep.  This was not an issue until i shut down my laptop for the first time in a while 2 days ago.  ANy ideas how to stop this?

I recently shut down my MacBook Pro for the first time in a long time.  SInce then, everytime i reboot or awake my laptop from sleep, the Mail app opens unprompted causing my computer to slow down incredibly, and some apps to freeze.  I have no idea how to stop this or why it even started doing this.  Any ideas on how to get it to stop? Thanks!

I have this problem too with my Macbook Air. Mail opens automatically every time my laptop sleeps. I actually just asked about this in my own thread. However, it is not causing my apps to freeze.

  • Macbook Pro not sleeping when lid closed

Since upgrading my late 2011 13-inch Macbook Pro to Yosemite, I've noticed that it does not go to sleep properly when I close the lid. While the screen does turn off, the white LED remains on at full brightness and the fans spin up to maximum speed. When I open the lid again, the fans slow down but the screen doesn't turn back on until I press a key. This suggests it wasn't sleeping at all and the display saver simply activated.
If I use the Apple menu (top left) to enter Sleep mode, wait for it to go to sleep then close the lid, it sleeps properly with the white LED glowing slowly.
I have checked the Energy Saver preferences, and there is no Sharing set up so I doubt that's the problem. Is anyone else having this issue? Any ideas how to fix it?

Similar issue after upgrade w my MBP (early 2011).
Close the screen with apps open... climb into bed... the laptop appears to enter sleep BUT several times thruout the night I hear the optical drive spin up along with the hard drive and screen glow (visible w screen closed as a glow)... then... it goes back to sleep (must detect closed screen).
    Weird.
Did not do so with prior OS installs (not hardware issue... related to Yosie install).
