Unable to restore or update ipod

I just installed iTunes 7. When I connected my 60GB, video, ipod, I was prompted to update the 1.1 version software. When I clicked update I received the following error message: "The iPod could not be updated. An unknown error occurred. 1417" When I attempted to restore the iPod, I got this error message, "The ipod could not be restored. An unknown error occurred. 1428". I have restarted my PC and reset my ipod. What next?

I am going to help you guys and try and solve it... I got error 1417, The iPod "Dan's iPod" could not be updated. An uknown error has occurred (1417). Here's what I would try for you guys because I had about the same problem.

1)Plug in your iPod and wait for iTunes to tell you an update for it is available
2)Click the Install button on that dialog and keep an eye on your iPod
3)When your iPod screen switches from the flashing "Do Not Disconnect" message to the Main Menu screen, unplug the iPod, wait a couple SECONDS, plug the iPod back in
4)You should notice some slow-down in the progress meter and a new dialog box should come up and tell you your iPod is being updated and to not disconnect it until the update finishes
5)That's it. Wait for the update to finish and iTunes will re-recognize it and show its new up-to-date status.
This man was my god when i got it to work.

Unable to restore or update ipod classic software

Running into a couple of problems over the past couple of weeks
1:I can't sync any purchased albums or games to my ipod.Kept getting the error that
I wasn't authorized to play them on this computer.Prior to syncing I always make that authorization is successful.Was told to update or restore my ipod software but when i tried to unknown error 1417 appeared.to resolve this i followed the instructions of article ts1372
2:Now when i try to restore or update my ipod software i get the unknown error 1436
can someone please help me.I'm at my wits end trying to sort this out.Can't find any info on unknown error 1436

hello, I just upgraded to itunes 7 and it told me there is an update to 1.2 for the ipod. I cannot get it to update. as soon as I click update, the "do not disconnect" message disappears from the ipod and eventually it goes to sleep. The computer says "updating ipod." I have left it on all night with no change.
Things I have tried:
-the 5 R's (restore ipod didn't work, does the exact same thing as when I try to udate it.)
-changing the drive letter for the ipod.
-removing itunes completely for a fresh reinstall.
Can anyone help?

When I first got my iPod, I put a whole bunch of
songs on it (not nearly enough to fill it though).
Then I let my (now ex) boyfriend use it while he
worked out, and his friend attempted to add more
songs to it.. which deleted all my songs and replaced
them with his. Now I have it back and can't figure
out how to put my songs back on it. I don't really
want to delete all the songs he put on it, I just
want to put mine back on but I can't figure out how.

hehe the only thing that is similar is that you have a problem too.
If you go into the options in itunes you can tell it to manually sync your ipod (do this before you plug your ipod in!) Then you can simply drag the songs from your library to your ipod to add them to what is already in your ipod.
Now to update the problem I posted about: I formatted the ipod from disk manager in winXP and now when I try to restore the ipod, itunes disconnects the ipod, reconnects it, and then does nothing but display a window that it is restoring the ipod. I don't get anything on the screen of my ipod except "Do not disconnect". I am going to try leaving it on all night.
The only thing different from what was happening before is that now it is reconnecting the ipod to windows after it disconnects it. From reading the instructions, however, I think I should be seeing a progress bar on my ipod.

sounds like your phone was jailbroken. If this is the case, you're hosed.

Cannot restore or update iPod in iTunes 7 or later????

Nano completely crashed today and said to restore with iTunes but i get this error "Error 1415, 1417, 1418, 1428, 1429, 1430, 1436 or 1439: Cannot restore or update iPod in iTunes 7 or later"

Anyone else have this issue?

Albums,Songs and Games that I have purchased through iTunes Store are in my iTunes library but when I try to sync them to my ipod the error " unable to sync to ipod cause you are not authourized to play them on this computer ".Prior to syncing I always make sure authourization is successful which it is.When trying to restore or update the software i get the error " unable to update due to unknown error 1417.Trying to resolve this i followed the instructions step by step of article TS1372.Now when i try to update and restore i get the unkwown error 1436.can't find any info on this.

Error 21 unable to restore after update

Hello,
I recently tried to download the new update as it pestered me everytime I plugged my iPhone in (think it was 4.1). It failed, and as a result it said that I had to restore my iPhone. So I go to restore it and now it says unable to restore (error 21).
I literally have no clue what's going on. Anybody out there offer me any suggestions or advice on how to fix this problem?

*Basically you need to disable your Anti-virus software and then do a DFU restore.*
*How to DFU Restore.*
1.) Open iTunes and connect the iPhone.
2.) Press and HOLD the Home button AND the Sleep/Wake button at the same time.
3.) After the screen turns off, +LET GO+ of the Sleep/Wake button and +CONTINUE HOLDING+ the Home button.
4.) iTunes will pop up a message telling you that it has detected an iPhone in Recovery Mode. (You can let go of the Home button now.)
5.) Click 'Restore' to restore your phone to Factory settings.
Also, try updating to the latest version of iTunes before you do this.

Unable to restore / have sad iPod icon

My iPod will not power up but instead gives the sad icon. It will not connect to my computer and I am unable to restore since it will not load itself onto the computer.

From that came the iOS 8 wanted to update my iPad 2 via WIFi however I came out an error which could not be updated. When trying to download via itunes software update and upgrade process I went back out again erro, however as I was in the process of updating the itunes asked me to restore my IPad. thanks for answering ... this can you give me solution and have taken just as the iPad sim but would not let me perform the software upgrade via wifi what do for itunes which now because of the error that occurred when I was restoring (and to date still leaves me continunando and restore and atualizar), my iPad is unusable until it accepts the software upgrade.
It should also mention to you and researched the error codes it throws me to acualizar, I have been and yet I just will not let me restore or update

I have updated my iPhone 3GS with 4.2 version but its not responding. When i switch on my iphone,it shows to connect to itunes. I have tried connecting to itunes nd clicking Restore and update but it shows the message stating iPhone cannot be restored. Please suggest me what to do. The phone is not even getting turned on.

HT201412 Unable to Restore after Update

I was trying to update my parents iPad 2, which was long over due as it has never been updated. After the update was complete it said that it failed to restore. It is now froze..iTunes no longer recognizes the device and the devices screen shows a picture of a USB plug with an arrow pointing to the iTunes logo. I upgraded my touch and now I have to restore but I get the following error message - The iPod "ipod" could not be restored. An unknown error occured (21) Can anyone help, I really need this back working and soon. Thanks

I had the same problem when trying to do the latest update. Took it back to an apple store and it restored first time on a Mac in the shop. Then came home and restored from a back up and put all my stuff back on (never under-estimate the importance of backing up). The shop recommended I re-install I-tunes in case it has got some corrupt data in it, as I know the problem is not my cable as it worked ok with my Nano. So, it should be able to be sorted for you, you need to get it to a Mac.
