WAN port without DHCP/NAT on WRTP54G

(Sorry if this issue was already discussed - I couldn't find it using Advanced Search) I find that my new WRTP54G works fine, supporting VoIP and several PC clients via its LAN switch, providing I enable its DHCP and NAT function. This is with the DSL modem connected to the WRTP54G's WAN port, as required for the VoIP module to access the internet. However, this configuration (the factory default) results in "double NAT" when used with my DSL modem. (This situation is evident by inspecting the HTML status screens of the respective equipments.) The obvious solution would be simply to disable DHCP and NAT in the WRTP54G and let the DSL modem do the hard work. However, disabling DHCP/NAT within the WRTP54G essentially shuts down all PC client access to the internet. The symptoms resemble a situation where packets are not being properly routed between the WRTP54G's LAN switch side and its WAN port (although I don't know whether that is the precise cause or not). On my previous WRT54G router used with a PAP2T, I saw the same behavior but the workaround was simple: move the DSL modem Ethernet port connection from the WRT54G WAN port to one of its LAN switch ports. Problem solved at the expense of occupying one of the four available LAN switch ports. Such workaround is not applicable to the WRTP54G due to the previously mentioned requirement of its VoIP module. Has anyone got their WRTP54G (or for that matter, WRT54G) working properly with its WAN port as a simple (non-DHCP/NAT) router? Please note my preferred Internet Connection Type (on the WRTP54G opening Setup page) is "Obtain an IP automatically" although a solution using "Static IP" would be OK. I am looking for a portable solution (for hotel rooms etc.), so I can't set the WRTP54G to "PPPoE" as suggested in some other forums. Thanks in advance for any help!

Use the Modem connected to WAN Port of the wireless router ....
In such case you can use the DHCP of the router also & other computers using the client services can work .....
Make sure that the Ip address should not conflict between the Vonage router & Linksys router .....
I think that Vonage is giving Ip - 192.168.15.1 ...& the default Ip for Linksys router is 192.168.15.1 ..... change the Ip for any of the router or modem to 192.168.20.1 .....
Also under Linksys router once you open the setup page ....
Leave the Internet Connection type to "Obtain an Ip automatically"
Click "MAC address clone"
Click enable & click clone
Click save settings ....
See if you are able to go online or not ....

    My internet connection is delivered by a modem Sagem f@st 3464 (Scarlet One : vdsl   tv   VoIP   wi-fi), it's almost the same than a BBox-2 from Belgacom (software and configuration).
    This modem has 4 ethernet port, 2 for TV, 2 for LAN, the WAN port is RJ-11 and the connection is a PPPoE (in fact, it's the Belgacom network). I also got a Wi-Fi 802.11g on it.
    The main raison why I bought a TC is the dual Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz (for 802.11n), especially for my MacBook Pro and my iPad 3.
    First of all, can I do the following with my TC :
    1) connecting the TC using a ethernet cable from one of the two modem's LAN ports to the TC's WAN port
    2) create a new Wi-Fi network using the TC ?
    Up to now, after 2 man days of configuration, my TC is connected to my existing LAN network, as a bridge, but there is no new Wi-Fi network.
    The Airport Utility 6.1 "Wizard" is just un-usable and I need to use a Win 7 laptop in order to get access to all the configuration !
    The standard manual is very poor.
    Does someone already create a new Wi-Fi network using its TC connected by Ethernet on a modem/router device ? How do you set up the DHCP (and NAT) ? Which range did you use ?

    This is easy enough to do..
    Plug the TC directly into a computer.. without other connections to do the setup.
    Using the newly installed 5.6 utility.
    Bridge the TC.
    Create a wireless network.
    This is an older screen shot and I would set security to WPA2 Personal only not WPA/WPA2 Personal as shown above.
    I do recommend you use wireless names that are short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
    Update the TC..
    Now plug it into the modem router.. it will be a part of the network without doing NAT and DHCP itself.. which you do not want.. that leads to double NAT issues.. but it is a WAP that provides access to devices on both 2.4ghz and 5ghz bands directly to the main router.

  • WRT400N WAN port doesn't work.

    Nothing that I connect to the WAN port seems to get the internet LED to illuminate. I have a DHCP access to a Motorola CPEi 150 which works great if I connect to it directly with a netbook or if I use a dlink WRB-2310 router but it doesn't ever seem to register with the WRT400N WAN port. I've even tried connecting the WAN port to the dlink and still no LED or address from the DHCP server. It's a recently bought this Linksys-refurbished router and I think it will cost more to send it back that it cost to get. Is there an easy way to determine if the WAN port works at all without constantly disconnecting the internet in my house as family members are getting a bit upset with me.

    I tried connecting a LAN port to the WAN port and it worked.  I then connected the WAN port to the LAN port of a DLink router in series and I could communicate with the internet.  I then connected it directly to the Motorola CPEi 150 and the port showed nothing.  I then tried to repeat my steps and could not get any responce on the WAN port even with rebooting the router and reverting to factory defaults.  The WAN port appears to have  intermitten problems.  I will attempt to troubleshoot some more but I may have to give up.

  • How to Configure DHCP/NAT in Time Capsule

    Assuming I can get my Comcast Cable model to act as a bridge, I see advice for setting up my Time Capsule as a DHCP/NAT.
    On the Comcast Cable modem:
    WAN IP address  = 174.13.188.121. <- fake IP
    WAN IP gateway  = 174.13.188.122.
    WAN subnet mask = 174.13.188.122.
    LAN IP address  = 10.1.10.1.
    LAN subnet mask = 255.255.255.0.
    I'd like to use 10.1.10.11 for Time Capsule, 10.1.10.13 for Mac Mini Server, 10.1.10.17 for iMac#1 and 10.1.10.19 for iMac#2.
    But nooooooo. The AirPort Utility offers only the following DHCP Ranges:
    10.0.1.3 - 10.0.1.200, or
    176.16.1.3 - 176.16.1.200, or
    192.168.1.3 - 192.168.1.200
    There's a checkbox for "Enable NAT Port Mapping Protocol," but the documentation on it is poor. There's also a checkbox for "Enable default host at: 10.0.1.253, or 176.16.1.253 or 192.168.1.253," but its documentation is equally poor. Apparently Apple didn't see the need to explain how these things work.
    If I use a LAN IP of 10.0.0.1 for the Comcast Cable Modem, then use AirPort Utility to set a DHCP Range of 10.0.0.3 to 10.0.0.200 I receive a warning message that "The DHCP range you have entered conflicts with the WAN IP address of your base station."
    I don't see the conflict -- what is wrong? Better yet, how do use AirPort Utility to set up Time Capsule?

    I want the Server.app to serve the public. The above is what I have configured now. Some behavior is odd. For example, I can access the internet from the iMac clients but not the Mac Mini Server. I don't know why.
    In other words, how do I string together my Comcast Cable Modem, Time Capsule, Mac Mini Server, iMac#1 and iMac#2 into a useful LAN that can browse the Internet and provide FTP and Web service?
    I would think this is a common setup with several sample setups available on the web. No such luck.

  • Won't recognize cable plugged to Ethernet WAN port

    I have a new Airport Extreme. I have gone through the setup process and it flashes amber. The cable from my DSL modem is plugged to the Ethernet WAN port but there is no green light at the port and Airport Utility says there is nothing plugged into the WAN port. The DSL cable works fine plugged directly into my Macbook Pro.

    He won't want to do that. He already has a modem so that is doing the PPPoE related stuff. All he would need is IP conectivity. You would probably want to configure the AE to:

    I have a basic modem/router from my ISP which didn't always work very well, so upon suggestion instead of upgrading to a new one I purchased an airport express to use with the modem, since we mostly use apple devices at home.
    The idea is to use the old modem/router strictly as a modem and use AirPort Express for everything else (routing &amp; access point).
    However I need some technical info to set this up, since I not very familiar with networking.
    This is what I understand: In my old modem/router, I need to turn off wireless (it will be connected to the airport via Ethernet cable) and DHCP and NAT (if I can figure this out) as well as the firewall. After that, I should connect the airport to create a new wifi network and have it run DHCP &amp; NAT (which will also provide firewall services)
    Does this sound right?
    Also, the Airport product page mentions that it can also run/provide the following: PPPoE, VPN Passthrough (IPSec, PPTP, and L2TP), DNS Proxy, SNMP, IPv6. Sorry if it sounds ignorant, but do I need to bother with any of this? Specifically PPPoE, which sounds like a modem function.
    Again, since we're talking about a crappy modem here, the idea is to let the Airport do most of the work, and leave the least up to it.

    I found the answer in an Amazon review:
    1. Auto-Configure the modem with your ISP by directly connecting the modem to your computer. Follow the instructions given in the booklet/user manual/ISP letter to enter the PPPoE username & password.
    2. After configuration is complete, confirm that you are connected to the internet.
    3. Click 'Advanced Setup' on the Main Menu.
    4. Turn off DHCP Server on the 'DHCP Settings' page. Click Apply.
    5. Go to 'WAN IP Address' page and click Yes on the warning. Select RFC 1483 Transparent Bridging. Click Apply.
    6. The Internet light on the modem will turn off and always remain off in bridged mode.
    7. Remove cable from computer and plug into WAN port of your Router.
    8. In your router settings enter the PPPoE username & password. Follow instructions in your router's user manual to enable DHCP on your router.
    You should now be connected to the Internet using your modem & router in bridged mode.

    Hello, wanting to add a router to relieve a little congestion but the Red WAN port does not seem to work & going by other posts seems to be the norm.
    Can I get the WAN port made active ?
    If I plug the router into a LAN port, it all seems to work ok, but do I need to turn wifi off on the WiFi on the CG3100 or will it kill the router signal as it's plugged into the LAN.

    Mark_G I have an ASUS RT-AC68U router connected to my Telstra-Netgear C6300BD-202. The C6300BD is "Bridged" and used as a cable modem only. The RT-AC68U WAN port is connected via a short Ethernet cable (CAT 6) to the LAN #1 port on the C6300BD.
     I don't personally have a CG3100D unit, but if yours is a Telstra supplied unit, then I suspect it would have customised Telstra firmware, with no applicable instruction manual available. Normally when a gateway is bridged (by disabling NAT), all of its router functions are disabled, however I've run into some posts elsewhere that suggest with a CG3100D unit, you should specifically disable DHCP before bridging the unit. DHCP will be handled by the router.
     The order given was:-1. Disable Wi-Fi
    2. Disable DHCP
    3. Disable NAT (Create Bridge)
    4. Connect Cable from Ethernet Port on Modem to WAN Port on Router Access to the CG3100D in gateway mode is normally via 192.168.0.1.When it is bridged that may change to 192.168.100.1.  Perhaps someone who runs a CG3100D bridged could comment on whether this is the case.  

  • Do I need to buy an ethernet switch that has a WAN port

    I want to buy an Aiport Express to handle a WiFi only iPad and an old PPC iMac with 10.5.8 on it that has no WiFi card.  The iMac gets on the internet from a cable plugged directly into its ethernet port (using DHCP).  The cable comes off an antenna at the front of the cottage.  A signal hits the antenna from a broadcasting tower about half a mile away.
    I need to buy an ethernet switch for the Aiport Express to handle both the iPad wirelessly and the wired iMac.  Does the switch have to have a WAN port or can I buy one with five LAN ports?

    So here's what I am planning to do.  I get myself an ethernet switch.  I plug my cable from my antenna into it.  I run a cable from one of its five ports into my iMac.  I run a cable from one of its other ports into my Airport Express.  I configure the Airport Express in Bridge Mode.  Now my wife can connect to the web wirelessly using the iPad and I can connect using the wired iMac --- and we can do so at the same time and indpendently of one another.   No?
    Sorry, but no.
    You only have one IP address.  With a switch feeding two devices, it will be a matter of chance as to which device gets the IP address.
    The other device will not be able to connect to the Internet, since a switch cannot "split" the connection.
    Instead, you need a simple wired router to "share" the public IP address that you receive. In turn, the router distributes "private" IP addresses to devices on your local network, so each device will be able to connect to the Internet. 
    As I mentioned, a switch cannot perform the functions of a router.

  • How to use SNMP to access interface counters for WAN port when not in bridged mode

    Can't fault my timecapsule, however just struggling to get one little bit of functionality working.  I'm keen to get access to the WAN port interface counter information via SNMP, so I can track total bandwidth/throughput & also volume. 
    I have no issue getting SNMP to work & can see the 2.4 & 5.0GHz network counters, also total number of WIFI clients, wlan0, wlan1 and bridge0 interfaces.  Trouble is none of these are the WAN/external ethernet port.
    I see that it is likely that I'm trying to find the vlan1 port, however from what I'm reading this may only be available when the device is running in a routed mode (I'm running in bridge mode).
    Anyone able to suggest anything?

    Some cable modem you can turn off NAT.. and then use the TC in router mode.. or even use DMZ if the cable router allows that.
    Have you ever looked at gargoyle router firmware and its ability to count and quota all clients connecting to internet service.. it is a simply fantastic firmware and can be loaded onto a router that costs $70-130 dollars.. it is 3rd party but very solid if you choose the right combo.

    Isn't it fun trying to do things without an ethernet cable direct to the computer.. Apple sell a usb to ethernet adapter cable fairly cheap.. makes life a lot easier having something to do hard connections.. or as hard as usb can manage.
    Since you have to access the TC by wireless .. press and hold the reset button on the TC for about 10sec until front led flashes rapidly.. don't worry about the ethernet cable.. leave it disconnected.
    Now click on the airport symbol and join another network. The TC should revert to its home name.. which will be a combo of Time Capsule and its MAC address. There is no wireless security and you can do the setup.

  • WAN/LAN IP DHCP Airport Extreme problems

    Hi! I just moved and changed internet provider. Set up my computers and the Airport Extreme (AEBS) and things are a bit different. I used to put an ethernet cable from the wall (ethernet broadband socket) into the WAN port on the AEBS and an ethernet cable from the LAN port on the AEBS into my Ethernet port on the G5. This way I had my Ibooks wireless connected and my G5 with a cable. Worked fine. Now it seems I can't get on the internet with a cable from the wall into the AEBS WAN port. So I have used the LAN port connecting with DHCP instead. Works fine for the wireless Ibooks, but when I hook up the G5 from the AEBS WAN port to the G5 Ethernet port, it says the Ethernet connection has a fixed IP-address an may not be able to connect to the internet. And the printer I had in the network is not responding at all. Does anyone know I can solve this? Best regards Børge

    Were you ever able to resolve your problem? I am having the same issue. For some reason the wireless works fine if I connect an ethernet cable from the DSL router to the LAN port, NOT the WAN part, which is completely backwards. And of course, trying to connect another computer to the AEB via ethernet using the only port left open (the WAN port) does nothing. If you managed to fix it, I'd love to know how.

  • RV016 port forwarding by WAN port?

    Hi,
    I am replacing an ancient SOHO 90 series router with our new RV016, I was told this thing would do everything we needed which I didn't doubt, however, I am wondering if I made the wrong choice now.  We have 5 IP's on one line coming into the current router, that isn't an issue, if needed I can make 5 seperate drops with each IP, but, now we have several servers hosting services on the same ports.  For example 5.2 host a web server which is called to by the .250 address, 5.3 has one as well from .251, we have one on each of the 5, there are other servers too though on each of the 5 using the same ports.  When I go to port forwarding the only option is to forward the single port to a single server, can I not forward ports from each WAN connection to a different server?  Any help would be appreciated.

    The multi-WAN feature of RV016 is designed for redundancy and load balancing, so basic port forwarding is not tied to a specific WAN port. If a LAN server is exposed to the internet by the 1-to-1 NAT feature of RV016, the server can be accessed by a specified public IP address.

  • Troubleshooting Airport Extreme's wan port?

    I have an Airport Extreme base station that doesn't seem to be communicating through its WAN port.  Both Apple and Windoze computers can connect to it, wired or wirelessly, but I am unable to make the base station communicate with a gateway device, a (PPoE) DSL modem.  My brother (whose device this is) was having the same problem with his cable modem.
    As the Airport boots, the link light on the WAN port blinks green a couple of times, only instantaneously, but otherwise remains dark.  Once it's booted, the status light blinks amber.  And of course there is no throughput, no connectivity to the Internet.
    I also have a LinkSys WiFi router that works perfectly using the same gateway device and the same ethernet cable, which gives me to believe both the modem and the cable are in proper working order.  All the configuration information I'm entering into the Airport's web interface I'm cut and pasting from the same text file I habitually use to the LinkSys router (to cut down on clerical errors).  So presuming it's configured properly, presuming the cable and the gateway aren't at fault, I have to think the WAN port has given up the ghost.
    So I thought to ask the Apple cognoscenti if they agree with my diagnosis.  Is there a diagnostic I'm overlooking?  Do the WAN ports on these devices have a history of being problematic?

    I have discovered the chief problem was that the Airport doesn't take kindly to unresolved/unacknowledged errors/conditions under the Status button on the Summary page of the Airport utility.  It was regarding "extended mode" as an abnormality requiring acknowledgment, as well as my switching off all wireless security, as a temporary diagnostic measure.  Once I'd told it to 'Ignore' those conditions, I got both a solid green status light and a steady green link light on the WAN port.
    However, it still isn't passing data.
    As I was stumbling around in the Airport utility's GUI (before resolving the "start button" problem), I noticed it had an "Extend a wireless network" mode.  Since what my brother was after in the first place was getting stronger signal to the far end of the house, I asked if this wouldn't better suit his needs than substituting the Airport for his current (underpowered?) WiFi router.  He agreed, so I've changed my focus to setting up the Airport as an 'extender.'
    Now, reconfigured in 'extender' mode, its 'Status' on the GUI's 'Summary' page shows 'Normal' and the status light is steady green.  The GUI for my WRT54 (with DD-WRT firmware) shows it is authenticated and joined to the network, as both a LAN and a wireless client.  And the Airport's logs concur: "Joined BSS [WRT54's MAC]" and "Installed unicast TKIP key for authenticator [WRT54's MAC]".
    I've done this with the Airport either using DHCP or with a statically configured IP address to see if it made any difference.  It does not, either to its ability to join the network or to its (lack of) throughput.  So every indication I can find confirms it is a connected and fully functioning member of my network.
    I also have an XPSP3 box connected to one of the LAN ports on the Airport.  The NICs on both ends show a solid green link light.  The Airport's logs acknowledge that the XP box is connected: "Connection accepted from [::ffff:192.168.1.3]".  And the XP box can 'ping' the Airport.  All of which spells "connected" to me.
    However, the XP box can neither draw an IP address (the Airport's DHCP clients list remains empty) nor communicate with anything upstream of the Airport (which it only can do once I have given it a static IP address).  If I try to tracert or pathping from the XP box to the WRT54 (via the Airport), it stalls out at the Airport.  The response is the same whether I have the Airport's WAN port connected to a LAN port on the WRT54 or not.
    Address scheme-wise, my WiFi router (WRT54) is on 192.168.1.1.  The XP box that I have connected to the Airport via ethernet has a reserved IP of 192.168.1.3, but now is configured statically to that address because the Airport (seemingly) does not support it contacting the DHCP server.  The Airport consistently had been drawing the first available address from the DHCP pool, 192.168.1.10, but now I have it statically configured to .100 because my brother doesn't use DHCP reservations on his network, and I'm replicating how he will configure it to leave nothing to chance.  Having a static address saves him grief having to figure out what its address has become should the Airport utility not be able to find it (which seems to be its norm) and he has to connect manually through the Airport utility.
    I've spent almost every waking minute tinkering with this thing since midday yesterday and I've not yet seen evidence that the Airport has passed so much as a single bit of data.  And it isn't just the WAN port, it doesn't want to pass anything wirelessly either.  This thing is about to get my goat.  Remind me never again to offer my brother a favor.
    Any thoughts?  Humorous anecdotes?  Naughty limericks?

    I also have a network detector on my cell phone than can identify every device, wireless or otherwise, on the network its connected to.  But it does not "see" either the Airport or, naturally, the XP box beyond it.

  • Performance of WAN Port

    Hi there,
    I ordered a 120 Mbit/s line from my provider. After some speed issues I had a online session with the service provider today. I was getting 80-90 Mbit/s ....
    He advised me to take out the AirPort Extreme between the Cable Modem and my Mac Mini. First of all I did not think this will bring any improvement since the Modem is GBit Ethernet and the Mac Mini and Airport Extreme too....
    As he insisted on that I took it out and what happened? Internet performance went up from 80-90 to 110-115 Mbits.
    So actually there is a real cut in performance - is this a general performance limitation, like firewall/nat or whatever is making airport busy and not letting trough more than 100 Mbit .... or is the WAN port only 100Mbit?
    Is there anything to tune?
    Oh by the way the extreme is 2 weeks old - so it is latest model (MC)

    I've owned several routers from different manufacturers and have worked with several Internet service providers and have found that the routing process will cause, on average, a 15-20% drop in speed when compared to a straight through connection from the modem to a computer. Sometimes, its a bit more loss and sometimes a bit less.
    There is no doubt that the the NAT firewall accounts for some of this loss in the routing process and the process of sharing a single connection from the modem is likely to cause some loss as well.
    If had a 100 Mpbs service from the provider, I would expect on average to see speeds in the 80-85 Mbps range using an ethernet connection through the router. The Internet connection speed often varies on most providers during the day depending on the number of users on the system.
    If you are talking about wireless speed, there is more speed loss here through the router due to the security encryption process.
    Now, the results of other users may vary. Hopefully, they will post to give us more perspective. Based on the different routers I've used with different providers, I would say that your results are in the range that I would expect.

  • ISA500 tagged WAN port

    Hello,
    I'm currently evaluating an ISA570W firewall.
    The use case is to deploy it as an entry level firewall on FTTH internet access lines.
    The ISP provides a CPE that requires internet trafic to be tagged on a specific VLAN.
    I was a bit suprise when, after trying this configuration, finding out that the WAN port on the ISA500 can only be put in access mode.
    Which effectively makes this device unusable.
    Is there another way to set one of the ethernet interface in trunk mode and put it in the WAN zone with DHCP client enabled?

    so I digged a bit further and found a document from Cisco's knowledgebase that describes steps by steps instructions for the WAN port: http://sbkb.cisco.com/CiscoSB/Loginr.aspx?login=1&pid=2&app=search&vw=1&articleid=3719
    searching for vlan tag showed me a screen that allowed the setting of a tagged vlan on the WAN port but only available for PPPoE IP address assignement.
    the VLAN tag option is not available with "DHCP Client" IP address assignement.
    Is this something we could see in a future firmware release?
    From what I've seen tagged vlan on the WAN port is a typical configuration requirement for FTTH services here in Switzerland.
