WAN/LAN IP DHCP Airport Extreme problems

Hi! I just moved and changed internet provider. Set up my computers and the Airport Extreme (AEBS) and things are a bit different. I used to put an ethernet cable from the wall (ethernet broadband socket) into the WAN port on the AEBS and an ethernet cable from the LAN port on the AEBS into my Ethernet port on the G5. This way I had my Ibooks wireless connected and my G5 with a cable. Worked fine. Now it seems I can't get on the internet with a cable from the wall into the AEBS WAN port. So I have used the LAN port connecting with DHCP instead. Works fine for the wireless Ibooks, but when I hook up the G5 from the AEBS WAN port to the G5 Ethernet port, it says the Ethernet connection has a fixed IP-address an may not be able to connect to the internet. And the printer I had in the network is not responding at all. Does anyone know I can solve this? Best regards Børge

Hi Børge,
Were you ever able to resolve your problem? I am having the same issue. For some reason the wireless works fine if I connect an ethernet cable from the DSL router to the LAN port, NOT the WAN part, which is completely backwards. And of course, trying to connect another computer to the AEB via ethernet using the only port left open (the WAN port) does nothing. If you managed to fix it, I'd love to know how.

  • New Airport Extreme problems or DSL router problems

    Hi all,
List of what I have: Time Warner Cable (motorola modem) DSL, Latest Airport Extreme (with 2.4Ghz channel 5 & 5GHz channel 149) with the updated version 7.6.1, 2008 MBP4,1 with 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo with Mac OS X 10.5.8.
Now the problem, when I am on my MBP on the web internet slows to a stop, I will go to Systems Preferences, Network, (at this point Airport shows connected Full bars for the ant symble and a green light), then go to: Assist me... , I click Diagnostics, (On the left side) List: Airport (Green), Airport settings (green), Network Settings (green), ISP (either amber or red), Internet (either amber or red) and Server (amber or red).
So, basicly I keep looseing ISP, Internet and Server, now for the kicker, It does not happen every time i'm on my MBP or every day. But if it happens in the morning it will happen all day long.
This was happening with my old Airport Extreme so I up graded to the new one, worked without a problem for about a week, then started again reset & re installed several times changed channels (now back to default settings) I was hopeing that getting the new AE would take care of the problem so I coild start useing streaming TV but I'm not going to spend the money if I can't have the internet all the time.
By the way we just moved from one state to Maine never had this problem before, both area's are rural, & both are with TWC.
So the question is: do I have a TWC Modem problem or Airport Extreme Problem or is it just my MBP?
I have a Win7 desktop hard wired in, and my wife has an ipad2 but she is not home much and dosent seem to be around or on the web when this happens.
I am a serious NOVICE  so if you give advise please be very basic, Step by step!!!
    Thank you all in advance,
Not So Mad Max, But Getting there!!!!

P.S. I do have my AE set to be hidden with WPA2 set and a discoverable Guest also with WPA2 set!!
    Thanks

  • Airport Extreme Problems with 802.11b router

I have a Netgear MR314 LAN and wireless router. I have a G3 iMac and 2 G3 iBooks with Airport Express cards and they work fine with the wireless connection with this router. I have a 12 inch G4 iBook with an Airport Extreme card running 10.4.3. Every time when this iBook connects with the wireless router it works for about 10 minutes and then the router locks up. If I re-set my cable modem and the router then the system will work again.
Because the router only goes up to the speed of 802.11b and not the 802.11g potential speed of the Airport Extreme I know that the card has to run at the slower speed when it connects with my router.
I am trying to determine whether my Airport Extreme card is defective. Any suggestions?
    iBook G4 1.2 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I have updated the firmware in the router and that seems to have fixed the problem.

  • Airport Extreme - problem with usb printer and usb disk

I have Airport extreme with firmware 7.1. I try connect usb disk and usb printer with usb-hub to airport. I can't get disk or printer working. Also try connect only disk or printer without usb-hub to airport getting same problem. How I get disk and printer working with wireless network (windows pc computers)?
    1)
    My printer is HP PSC 1210 all-in-one ( http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=90764&lc=fi&cc=fi&dlc=fi&lang =fi&cc=fi&y=0&x=0 )
    - printer seems working fine after installing bonjour printer installing wizard.
    - I get error (in windows) when I try print document from word. Error only says "error printing" in status value.
    - In airport utility all seems ok. Airport see usb printer "Hewlett-Packard psc 1200 series"
    - printer protocol is RAW and driver manufacture HP (also try with microsoft driver)
    2)
USB disk is Targa Databox II 250
    - Airport utility says "Disk needs repair. Errors were found with a disk connected to your airport base station. please connect the usb disk to your mac or pc and use disk utility or another disk application to repair the disk"
    - I have connected Targa usb disk to windows pc and run scandisk and defreg. No errors found in windows. Result..no help for airport

I have a similar problem to your second issue. Tried connecting a Netdisk to the USB port of the Airport Extreme and it also said there was a problem with the disk. Have performed a low level format on the disk and Airport Extreme still complained the disk had a problem.
After unplugging the disk, my route decided to stop allowing wireless connections even after rebooting. Ended up having to hard reset the Airport Extreme and reconfigure it with my old settings to work again.
FWIW, the first Airport Extreme I purchased today only worked on 802.11a and steadfastly refused to work on b/g so had to get a replacement. I suspect Apple's quality control is not quite as good as it used to be.

  • Windows 7 and Airport Extreme problems

I've switch the airport extreme a few months ago, from a linksys router. Ever since switch my pc laptop drops/loses the wireless connection. The PC is running Windows 7. I have taken the laptop to another place that has a wireless network and never lose a connection. It will connect fine, just every so often it will drop the connection.
However my MacBook Pro and PS3, both connected over the wireless network never lose connection. And I do a lot of online gamine and it works great. Can anyone point me in the right direction on fixing the problem?
    Thanks

I'm having the same issue. My desktop pc keeps dropping the connection to my network (airport extreme router) while the rest of my devices (macbook pro, xbox, mac mini) still stay connected. The pc never had this issue prior to installing Windows 7 so im guessing there must be something with the Windows 7 OS.

  • Another usb printer-to-Airport Extreme problem

This issue is similar to Tanya Howie's, but involves an HP 5440 printer instead of a Pixma. I have the G4 iBook connecting via Airport to the Airport Extreme, the iMac Snowball hardwired to the AE via Ethernet cable, with the HP plugged in via usb to the AE. I have reinstalled the AE software 7.4.2, the HP software 5.3, and the Airport utility 5.4.2. Also, I connect to the internet via RoadRunner thru Warner Cable.
Occasional disconnects have been cured by resetting everything back up, until recently. Now, when I look at all the places where the printer should appear, I see it listed: in the Airport Utility settings, on the printer setup utility, the File dropdown Print command, in the dropdown Printer box and choosing Bonjour version of the HP, even in the Opening Connection box, which shows the attempt at opening the connection; the connection bar shows an attempted Print, then goes to Job Stopped.
When I run the Print Diagnostics that is in the HP 5440 menu bar, I get a green light on Airport, Airport Settings, Network Settings, ISP, and Internet, but a red light on Server, which also says Failed. If I click Continue and go thru the steps of the diagnostics, the last page says "Cannot connect to server: Networks Diagnostics was able to connect to the Internet, but not to the server 'HP Deskjet 5440 printer.riousbprint.tcp.local' . This could be caused by problems with the server, or an Internet problem between this computer and the server."
Where is this server, and can someone tell me how to address its issues or to find a work-around? And is there a step I have missed? Thanks!

I rolled back to 7.4.1 to try to fix my dropouts and slowdown problems, but that didn't make any difference. So I went back up to 7.4.2, but did the hard reset by
    1. unplug Airport Extreme
    2. Press in reset button on the back and hold it in while...
    3. Plug in power
    4. After light on the front started to flash, released the reset button
I then had to reset all the networking settings (password, SSID, etc) but that only took a few minutes and a couple of resets. The network dropouts haven't happened again so I'm hoping that has sorted it. The printers seem to be behaving themselves as well now. I did roll back to 7.3.2 at one point, but then I lost the printers completely with that and Snow Leopard (Leopard was fine though).
There was a posting I found from somewhere that said about setting up the printer using the IP connection setting rather than the automatic one, but I can't remember where I found that. Let me have a quick think...
Ok, I think this was the page (the instructions are very similar anyway)

    Good luck.

  • Airport Extreme problems--drops connection and can't change password

Hi, I am having multiple problems with my Airport Extreme (n) base station. All of these problems occur on all three of my machines. MacBook Pro 2007 model, MacBook Pro i7 2.66, and iMac 24".
    1. Sometimes the airport connection works, but then drops off for hours at a time with no explanation, and then starts working again by itself. The green light is lit all the time. Also the airport bars on my menu bar are showing that it's connected. However when I go through diagnostics it says I don't have a connection and to restart the modem, which I do to no avail.
    2. When it is connected, there is often strange download activity (shown via istats menu), even when no applications are open. It's around 200k. When I turn the airport off the downloading stops. This only happens via airport base station connection, not when connected via ethernet.
    3. I have tried numerous times to reset my AE base station password via airport utility. I go through the process. It tells me the configuration changes were successful and then it restarts the base station. When I reconnect the airport connection, it still uses the old password. I cannot get it to actually accept the new password.
Does anyone have similar experiences? I am not sure what to do and have not seen any simiar threads in the forum.
    Thanks for any help,
    lula

Yes, I am pretty sure it isn't that. That modem and it's connection works fine, but it's on the other side of the house.
These various problems (connection dropping, mysterious download when no apps are on, and not being able to change password) all started about two months ago, before that I never had problems with the airport. I have had the same ADSL modem (provided by my phone/cable company) the whole time.
What possible problems do you think the provided modem could cause?
And why am I not be able to change my airport password? That part really puzzles me.
Do you think if I bought a new modem--one completely independent and not connected to a particular isp it would solve the problem. I am willing to try that, but I don't know if it will make a difference.

  • Airport extreme problem with akamai?

When using my Airport Extreme I can't load sites that use Akami (e.g., Facebook, store.apple.com, etc.)
Using Safari's Activity window I can see that requests for css and js files, etc. time out...but only if they're served from Akamai.
I've tried other browsers...same problem. I've confirmed that it's not my ISP since all sites load correctly if I use ethernet and connect directly to my cable modem.
I upgraded the firmware from 7.4.1 to 7.4.2 but that didn't fix it.
    Suggestions?

The geniuses at the Genius Bar found a bad DNS entry in my setup. Thanks for the second set of eyes.

  • Airport Extreme Problem

We just purchased an Airport Extreme to replace our D-Link 624.
I set it up, and Internet Connect said that I was connected to the network, and that the router was connected to the internet via Ethernet to our cable modem.
So I thought that everything was working, it wasn't.
I couldn't access anything on the internet even though it said that we were connected.
Our ISP is Rogers, and we had the APEBS set to distribute IPs, and automatically configure with DHCP.
Is there something that we should be entering in to make the APEBS work?

I tried releasing and renewing the DHCP on the D-Link to see what would happen, and it gave me the exact same settings as before, which would mean that Rogers gives us the same settings all the time, so should I be entering all of the IPs and gateways, etc. manually into the APEBS to make it work?

  • Bellsouth Router (DHCP)-- Airport Extreme (09) -- 2-Airport Express ('10)

I have a Bellsouth Router that is distributing a range of addresses via DHCP on a DSL connection to a network in a preschool with an the Airport Extreme connected to the router right next to it. In the room with the Airport Extreme is three Macs connected wirelessly. From the AEX the ethernet wire runs to the far end of the school where it connects to an Airport Express. In between is a pair of switches connecting an iMac and a Mac Mini. Off of one of the switches is connected another Airport Express.
The goal is wireless throughout, but I ran into some glitches and have not been able to configure the AEP's just yet.
Any quick tutorials on settings? I have the AEX set up in Bridge mode and I want the AEPs to extend the wired network wirelessly while the AEX continues to serve the wireless Macs in the office.
I'm pretty sure I can figure this out with time today, but time is precious so any assistance would be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    JoeL

Since the AirPort Express Base Stations (AX) will connect back to the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) by Ethernet, you will want to configure the AirPorts for a "roaming" network.
Setup all the AirPorts as a bridges.
Internet > Internet Connection > Connection Sharing: Off (Bridge Mode)
For each AirPort in the roaming network:
o Connect to the same subnet of the Ethernet network
o Provide a unique Base Station Name
o The Network Name should be identical
o If using security, use the same encryption type (WEP, WPA, etc.) and password.
o Make sure that the radio channel is set at least three channels apart from the next AirPort.

  • Airport Extreme Problem. Guest network works, but nothing else!!!

An hour or so ago, my network stopped working. My guest one works, but not my main 2.4 or 5 ghz network. I tried the Airport utility but it can't read the configuration file. HELP!!

Please power down the AirPort Extreme and your computer.
Temporarily, connect an ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Exptreme.
Power up the AirPort Extreme first, then your computer
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
Click the word "Status" and a window will open with information about any errors on the AirPort Extreme.

  • Using DHCP Airport Extreme WRONG IP ADDY

I connect my modem directly to my computer and the internet works perfectly.
I try and use my Airport Extreme using DHCP and my Airport Extreme ALWAYS automatically picks an INVALID IP address.
I have no idea why the Airport Extreme is doing this.

When changing network configurations, it is always a good idea to do a complete power recycle of all of your network components.
Try the following, in order, checking for Internet access after each step, until resolved:
    1. If the modem has a reset switch, use it to reset the modem. Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the modem to initialize.
    2. Remove power from the modem. If it has a backup battery, remove this as well. Wait 5-10 minutes. Replace the battery, and add power back to the modem.
    3. Perform a complete power recycle of your network components as follows:
    Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
o Power-off the modem, 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
o Power-off the modem, AEBSn, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
    4. Contact your ISP to have them perform a "modem reset."

  • HP 1320 Printer with Airport Extreme Problem Solved with Leopard

This may be of interest. I appear to have solved my printing problems using an Airport Extreme with an HP 1320 printer.
It appears that all of the options for the printer must be specified. These options include the "Fit to Page" option in Print&Fax/Options&Supplies/Driver; the "Media Type" in Print/Finishing; the "Printer Resolution", "Resolution Enhancement", and "HPEconoMode" all in Print/Image Quality. If all of these are specified, the printer will print without user intervention.
    Hope this helps,
    David

There are no specific settings on the Apple router to allow a PC to connect. It broadcasts the same signal for all.
Have you checked the Windows firewall on the PCs to see if that, or possibly the anti-virus software is blocking the attempted connection?
I've had both XP and Vista machines, and in each case I had to go into the Firewall settings to tell the application to "allow" the connection that was being blocked. No problems at all after that. Not sure if this is your issue or not, but it would be the first place I would look.

  • Windows to Airport Extreme problem.

Good morning. This is pretty vague because I'm not the one who set it up initially. But I have to start somewhere so here it is.
We are running Windows XP on a Dell and 2 new iMacs. All are connected through a Wireless Airport Extreme (wireless isn't the issue I tried connecting directly to the Airport and still had this issue). All of the computers have internet connection and have access to all of the other computers on the network. The problem has to do with a PC based program name FastManager. For some reason it can't connect to the internet through the Airport network. I tested this by taking one of the computers home, where I don't have Airport and it worked perfectly. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.
    Thanks in advance.
    Thanx

I am having the same issue with my thinkpad - takes about 45 seconds to obtain an IP address.
Do not have this issue with the airport express

  • Are LAN ports on Airport Extreme active when used to extend WiFi network?

I am thinking of buying an Airport Extreme to wirelessly extend the dual-band WiFi network from my Time Capsule. In this scenario, with the Extreme configured as a bridge, would I be able to use the LAN ports on the Extreme to join some AV kit to the network?
