Wan Utillization issue

We are currently experiencing high utillization on our regional WAN connections.
In this scenario, we used to track this situation using IP accounting on the WAN interfaces.
We recently upgraded WAN routers to cisco WS-C6509-E Mutilayer switches.
When we tried to perform IP accounting on these devices, We get a warning <Accounting will exclude mls traffic when mls is enabled>
That way we cannot track the defaulting hosts.
Does anyone have an idea how we can overcome this

Looks like once on board the cat6k ship, you're going to need to switch gear to NetFlow instead:
http://www.ciscosystems.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps700/products_tech_note09186a00800a7af1.shtml#ip_accounting
"IP Accounting excludes MLS traffic
In the Cisco Catalyst 6500 series, Multiple Layer Switching (MLS) is deployed in such a way that once a flow is established, traffic is directly switched at PFC (hardware-switched) and is not processed by the MSFC, hence the lack of continuous accounting. Only new or process-switched flows (software-switched) is recorded by IP accounting when enabled, and even then only until the entry is entered into the database. Thus, the previous warning message is normally displayed when you enable IP accounting on such a platform.
6500(config)#int fa8/40
6500(config-if)#ip accounting
Accounting will exclude mls traffic when mls is enabled.
NetFlow accounting is the preferred method. Refer to Configuring NetFlow for more information regarding to NetFlow."

  • WAN Connection Issue

    Hi All
I have a OCI client on a LAMP server where PHP creates a connection to a Oracle 8i server on a remote location through a WAN link.
If I take my laptop which contains a virtual machine that is a clone of the LAMP server I can connect at the client's remote WAN link.
However, if I do try to create an Oracle connection on the LAMP server or through my Laptop on the LAMP server location. I get the following error:
ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor
I doubt it is a config error since it does work on the remote client's location. So I am looking more towards some network issue.
The client has opened port 1521. However, when I do a tcpdump I also notice that the php client is trying to access the server on another random port. Is this relevant ? I can not approach the client to open the port unless I have some solid grounds towards this.
Another thing, is that on the clients location I access the server directly on the private IP. On the remote location I use another IP where PAT is being used.
Any clues, hints or ideas ?
    Thanks

The error usually indicates your tnsnames.ora entry is requesting a service that is not running on the listener.
Check the listener logfile for failed connections.
Compare your tnsnames.ora service with the services running on the listener (lsnrctl status)

  • Wan & login issues ?

    Running 6 Netware 4.2 servers, Windows Xp/Nwclient 4.9 SP2 and a few
Windows NT4/Nwclient 4.30/ Zen 1.1 Starter pack. We use Workstation
Manager and DLU. Users launch Naldesk on Windows XP and Nalexpld on
Windows nt4. Both are called from the login script and launched from the
server. We have one ROOT partition, and all the servers have a RW replica
of this partition. Although not an ideal design, this all has worked
    flawlessly for years.
This weekend we moved part of our network to another building and
therefore now have a WAN IPX environment. We don't have any users at the
new location yet. Some users at our original location are now having login
issues - they get the " red N" icon like its trying to login but nothing
ever happens - there's no error message and they don't get logged in. I
let one user/workstation stay like this overnight and still nothing!
Where can I look to troubleshoot this? I can't find any error logs and
can't find any consistencies between the incidences & resolutions. It
seems a number of reboots / or reselecting the Tree/ Context / Sever in
the Advanced tab SOMETIMES helps. I saw a tid / post about settings in the
client if you are running Zen across a wan...do I need to do this (bad
address cache, server name cache, etc) We aren't really running Zen across
the wan though - users load nal/nalexpld from the server in their
location, not a server across the wan.
I know IPX across a wan is not good, but we are only running NW 4.2 so we
don't have a choice. I have the client properties set up to default to the
server in the user's location rather than across the wan, and to load NAL
from a server in their location rather than across the wan.
    Thanks

  • VLAN routing on Catalyst plus external WAN router issue......

    Hi,
    Bit of advice if possible.
I've got a project to implement VLAN's on a MAN, which is easy enough, using CAT4506 and a mixture of 3750 and 2950 switches. The Vlan aspect is OK but I'm a bit unsure as to how to integrate the WAN into the design.
I have two core WAN access sites each with 2 * cat4506 switches of which one at each site attach to a WAN router (3725)
The CAT4506 switches will be doing the vlan routing but the 3725 routers (one at each site in a HSRP group) will be routing the WAN. Obviously these need to be attached to the catalysts for WAN access. As I have seperate routers for vlan routing and wan routing, what is the best way to configure this ?????
Is configuring a seperate VLAN for the routers the best idea ? or is it best to use the sub interface option on the router ethernet ports ?
Do I just use a static route of last resort on the Catalyst pointing to the routers ?
    Help :-)

When you arte still in the design-phase, I want to strongly discourage you from designing a network with vlans that span multiple sites.
You will always run int STP issues in one way or another. The following link will give some sensible information on this subject:

I hope that it will point you to the right (or at leats an optimal) solution for your specific design.

    Leo

  • Wan connection issues

    Hello,
I had my phone and broadband installed last Wednesday but nothing worked until I tried on the test socket. A BT engineer came today to fix what we thought was an issue with the face plate and replaced it, but in the end, all the engineer managed to do is make the telephone work and left. So I'm back on the test socket to have both telephone and internet working. It seems the wan cable (provided with the BT hub) cuts the phone line each time it's plugged in and the broadband dos not connect anyway. Has anyone ever experienced this?

Was it engineer-installed in the first place?
Did he fit a service specific face plate like this?

  • WRT54G WAN DHCP issue

my WRT54G was working fine but from last last 8 days
i am using my router on a cable with a dhcp server
but from the last 8 days it is not accuring DHCP
in the status the ip is 0.0.0.0
but if i plug the same cable on my system it works fine but on router there is problem. i have also cloned my systems MAC address on router, reset the router, checked the cables but ended up with nothing
the private lan of router is working fine i connect my notebook and PC with and it all works fine but the router does not accuire an ip address from the cable

Hardwire your computer to the modem and check if it's online. If it is, isolate your computer and your router. Hard reset the router for 30 seconds then powercycled for 30 seconds. Access the router's setup page, configure the wireless settings first. Then under the security tab, uncheck the block anonymous internet/wan requests. Then clone the MAC Address, and lastly, change your router's local IP Address to 10.10.10.1 and save the settings. It will show up as page cannot be displayed OR asks you to release/renew your ip. Power-off your modem and router. Connect the modem to the router's internet port. Boot up the modem first and wait for the cable-link/online/cable light to go steady. Then power on your router, wait for 30 seconds and then access your router's setup page using the 10.10.10.1 number and check for the status. You should have an IP address now.
IF all these fail, upgrade your router's firmware first then repeat the above process. Make sure to hard reset your router after upgrading the firmware.

  • RV180 WAN speed issue

I've connected an RV180 to a 100mb symmetric leased line but we're not getting anywhere near that speed (more like 10mb). I selected this router because it's supposed to support that speed. Our provider told us to disable auto-negotiation on the WAN port which I have done, and also to set it to 100/full, but we then get no connection at all, and have to leave it on 1000/full. Wondering if anyone can suggest anything?
    thanks

From http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/lanwan-reviews/31746-cisco-rv180-vpn-router-reviewed?showall=&start=3, you can have a good feel of the network performance of RV180.
Definitely, there is something wrong if you're only getting 10Mbps or so.
Try disabling all firewall, QoS, and when you measure performance, try for a remote site as near as possible. If you're in USA, you won't want to use a speed test server in China, for example.

  • Secondary DPM (2012 R2) Issues: synchronising too much data from Primary DPM, persistant consistancy checks, and no dedup support!

I have a Primary DPM server that is protecting various File servers and a Exchange DAG. Everything is working as it should on this server, but I am experiencing constant issues on the secondary DPM protecting these same data sources.
On the primary, two Protection Groups in particular are set up to protect two different volumes on the same file server. Volume D:\ is 46TB in size, with a deduplicated file size of 22TB (actual 39TB) whilst Volume E:\ is 25 TB in size, with a deduplicated
file size of 2.5TB (actual 5.5TB).
    Issue 1:
As expected Volume D: was initially replicated to the secondary DPM server at its undeduplicated size ( 39TB), as was Volume E:\ with initial replication to the secondary of 5.5 TB.  So when is Microsoft going to support dedup on a secondary DPM ? It
seems daft to support dedup on the Primary DPM which is always more likely to be close to the original datasources on the  LAN and not on the secondary DPM which is most likely to be placed offsite on a WAN !
    Issue 2:
I have a big issue with the subsequent Synchronizations on the secondary server for E: which seems to transfer almost the full 5.5 TB every day ( I have it set to sync every 24hrs) - although the data is fairly static (i.e.unchanging) on that volume. On
one occasion a Sync continued for over 48 hours for this volume and had transferred over 20GB (according to the DPM console) , until I manually cancelled the job - how is that possible on a volume with only 5.5 TB (UN-deduplicated) ?? What is going on here
    - has anyone any ideas?
    Issue 3:
Another File server I am protecting on both the Primary & Secondary DPM server - always fails over to a consistency check on the secondary server - usually due to the fact it cannot access a particular file which results in an inconsistent replica .
However the Sync (and subsequent restore point) on the primary DPM server from the original datasource is always completes without any issues. Again, has anyone any clues ?
I do get the impression that the whole Secondary DPM thing is not quite robust enough. I can only assume that as the Primary seems to protect the original datasources ok, that the issue is with the secondary reading the information on the primary DPM.

I tried changing the time of the synchronization, but that didn't help.
Meanwhile, I was working on another unrelated case with Microsoft and so I didn't want to have a second case open at the same time. So I waited for some weeks with no change on this problem. Then, about a day or two before I was finally going to call Microsoft
to open a case (months after the problem had started), the problem suddenly resolved itself, with no input from me! So I don't really know if it was time that fixed it eventually or what. Sorry I can't be of more help.

  • WLC is rebooting whenver WAN goes down

    Hi,
I came across with one issue repetitively. Whenever we have issue with WAN disconnection issue, after some time our LAN WLC gets rebooted .
As I gone through the logs, found that we will have disconnection with Mobility group member <ip address> . Based on that , suspecting we have some policies or some parameter configured therefore whenever we have issue with mobility controller member ( such as disconnection ) .
We have mobility group configured whereas one of our mobility member is on WAN ( other location ).
so whenever we have disconnection issue with mobility member which is there in head-office location , our local LAN WLC gets rebooted.
can anybody look into this? It would be great to know , if we have enabled any feature unknowingly.

Is the reason you require the same mobility group name for a remote site is because you are doing failover between the two? Usually you don't require the same mobility group name unless you want the AP's to be able to failover between multiple WLC's.
I don't think that would fix your issue though. Maybe setup syslog so you can see if the wlc reboots due to another issue or error.

  • RV082 Firmware Upgrade Breaks WAN

I have upgrade the firmware on several RV082 (and RV042) model routers, and all of them have had subsequent WAN connectivity loss. The WAN works for a while, then stops working until the router is restarted, then fails shortly thereafter. I would assume it was some configuration corruption on incompatibility with the upgrade, but the symptom has been universal. EVERY 2.x upgrade I've made to a RV082 or RV042 router has exhibited this symptom. Reverting to the 1.3.98-tm firmware fixes the issue. Has anyone else had this trouble? Any solution?

Update - I have now seen this behavior with over a dozen RV042/RV082 devices. Solutions are:
Downgrading the RV082 to the 1.3.9.8 firmware
Downgrading the RV042 to the 1.3.12.6 firmware
Replacing the unit with the version 3 hardware (RV042v3, RV082v3). I have done this in three cases.
In all cases, these actions fix the WAN access issues for LAN computers.
    Some additional details:
Nearly all of my LAN clients in these situations are Mac OS X computers.
Not all RV042 routers with 1.3.13+ firmware, or RV082 routers with the 2.0+ firmware have this issue, but more than 75% seem to develop the problem, and the problem happens soon after the upgrade to the firmware, or if the device shipped with the newer firmware.
All devices that have the problem have one or more VPN Gateway-Gateway tunnels defined and active, but have a variety of other settings.
The symptom of the problem is that LAN computers have no problems with LAN IP communications, including access to the router administration web pages, but have intermittent or no connectivity to the WAN. The symptom is first observed as DNS timeouts, then can progress to total loss of WAN connectivity, but this more severe situation is not as common. Sometimes renewing the DHCP lease reactivates connectivity, sometimes restarting the router is required.
I have tried reloading firmware, factory defaulting devices, and not setting any settings except WAN IP information. The symptom was still present unless one of the above three solution actions was taken.
The v3 hardware and software is vastly improved, and I recommend this solution for anyone experiencing this problem, and possibly as a general recommendation. Performance of faster WAN connections is improved with the new hardware. Users that require the improvements in the firmware versions that exhibit this symptom should upgrade to the v3 hardware.

  • Why internal EIGRP flapping when a WAN link is flapping?

I have router A and B running EIGRP in between. Router B has a WAN connection into the carrier.
Recently the EIGRP neighboring between A and B was flapping. In the mean time the WAN link was flapping too.
Router B was running BGP over the WAN link and redistributing BGP into EIGRP.
Why the WAN link issue caused the EIGRP neighboring up and down?

  • HomeHub3 WAN Status

    Hi there.
I have BT Infinity FFTC and have been having speed troubles recently. My IP profile for the line is set to 5.03 and I can't get >5mps when connecting either wired or wireless. This issue is being 'dealt with' and I have an engineer appointment booked after spending an age speaking to the BT call centre who admitted there seemed to be a problem with the speed coming in to the house.

I have no other issues on the line. No dropouts, wireless signal is acceptable, line noise test was clear.

  • WAN Miniport (2) suddenly appearing with yellow triangle icon

Last week I was called to troubleshoot a Lenovo Thinkpad that could not connect to the network. Device manager showed the Realtek NIC, a Centrino wireless adapter, Teredo Tunneling adapter, and six listings for WAN Miniport adapter, all of these items with
the yellow triangle and exclamation point. It was not possible to update the drivers, because no network connections were available. Even a wired connection would not work. Whenever I tried to run the troubleshooter, I got the error that the Diagnostics Policy
    Service was not running.
After much googling, I eventually tried uninstalling the network devices and rebooting to have Windows reinstall them. This didn't work, as soon as I tried to use the driver, the yellow triangle came back. Finally I decided to reformat back to factory settings.
After reformatting, I was able to add the laptop back on the network, with both wired and wireless connections working. In Device Manager there were listings for Bluetooth adapters, the LAN adapter and wireless adapter, and a single WAN Miniport adapter.
I disabled the option to allow these devices to turn off the computer.
I was able to browse the network and get online to update software.
After I left to do something else, I came back and the laptop display was off, so I had to hit power to bring it back. I logged in, and the wireless connection had dropped. I was able to reconnect, but that shouldn't have happened - it's unusual behavior.
I went to Device Manager and now there are two WAN miniports, and #1 has the yellow triangle and is not working. #2 is working. Again I went to the power options and disabled the option to allow the adapter to turn off the computer.
Now I am wondering what's going on, and if the problem actually is hardware-related and not driver-related. Why was it working OK yesterday and now I'm getting errors again? Is this possibly a hard drive issue? The laptop is less than 2 years old.
    I'd appreciate any advice.

    Hi,
Firstly, about "I got the error that the Diagnostics Policy Service was not running.", you could start this service to clear up this message:
    1. Type "Services" in the start menu search box, press Enter.
    2. In the Services window, navigate to the following one
    3. Right click "Start" button to make it running.
The next, about the WAN miniport issue, do the following:
    1.Open Device Manager.
2.Right-click the WAN miniport (Network monitor) device, and then click
    Update Driver Software.
3.Click Browse my computer for driver software.
4.Click Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.
5.Clear the Show compatible hardware check box. From the list than select something that can be removed for instance Microsoft -> Generic Mobile Broadband Adaptor. and click next.
    6. Back in the device manager, delete the device that just turned into the “MAC Bridge Miniport” device.
    7. Once done removing the bad miniports, restart the computer.
    Finally, check the result.

  • Path Selection between 10 gig fiber and microwave

    Hello everyone,
my network is running OSPF as an IGP, i have a 10 gig Ethernet  fiber connected between two sites and a microwave link as a redundant connection.
since ospf metric is cost ( or bandwidth ), the 10 gig ethernet connection is always preferred. however, sometimes the 10 gig link is flapping or the bit error rate is bad, is there anyway to change the path selection to go through the microwave when the bit error rate in the 10 gig link is bad or the link flaps ?
basically can we make the path selection based on anything than the speed or cost ?

Bandwidth can be a metric to OER/PfR.  Much else can be used by OER/PfR.
The intent of this technology is sort of described by the names, Optimized Edge Routing (v1) and Performance Routing (v2).
Both can account for path bandwidth and/or analyze performance.
Understand typical dynamic routing protocols keep track of paths between source and destination and some have a way to "weight" paths  (for example, OSPF link cost [which by RFC, hasn't nothing to do with bandwidth, but is often based on that]).
OER/PfR, for example, can run their own SLA tests.
Years ago, I set up OER in large dual MPLS/VPN environment.  Our initial "problem", after activation, our WAN performance monitoring tools (and our users!) no longer "saw" any WAN performance issues.  They were still happening, but OER "saw" them first, and worked around them before the monitoring tools saw them.
