There are several Java XML API's available. SAX, JXpath, DOM4J, Xerces, etcetera.

• Using a local XML file for parsing - iPhone

Good afternoon everyone. I am trying to create an application for the iPhone that will use an XML file for it's data source. I have been attempting to convert the SeismicXML application from the dev center to use a locally stored file, but to no avail. I have it building and running fine, but no data is appearing. Is there anyone that can give me an example of parsing with a locally stored file? Thanks!

NSString *filePath = [[NSBundle mainBundle] pathForResource:@"myFile" ofType:@"xml"];
NSData *myData = [NSData dataWithContentsOfFile:filePath];

• Reading huge xml files in OSB11gR1(11.1.1.6.0)

Hi,
I want to read a huge xml file of size 1GB in OSB(11.1.1.6.0)?
I will be creating a (JCA)file adapter in jdeveloper and importing artifacts to OSB.
Please let me know the maximum file size that could be handled in OSB?
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Suresh

Depends on what you intend to do after reading the file.
Do you want to parse the file contents and may be do some transformation? Or do you just have to move the file from one place to another for ex. reading from local system and moving to a remote system using FTP?
If you just have to move the file, I would suggest using JCA File/FTP adapter's Move operation.
If you have to parse and process the file contents within OSB, then it may be possible depending on the file type and what logic you need to implement. For ex. for very large CSV files you can use JCA File Adapter batching to read a few records at a time.

I want to get the infomation for that xml file. like mss_depart id=233, building xpath dyanmically for every id and loading
that using dom4j. which is very very slow.
Is there any other solution for that to read the data using sax parser only.
I want to execute the xpath or data for the following way.
//a_depart/@id ------> all the ids of a_depart tags if it returns 3 values say 123,124,125
after that i want to execute
//a_depart[@id='123']/b_depart/@id like this ...to retrive the values of all the levels ...
I am executing following xpath for every unique ids at all levels.
List l = doc.selectNodes(xPathForID);
List l1 = doc.selectNodes(xPathForAttributes+attributes.get(j)+"/text()");
But it is very slow and taking lot of time.
Is there any other way to solve this problem. If any please mail me it is urgent.
I am using jdk1.4 and jdk1.5
Is there any support for sax parser to execute xpath in jdk1.5 direclty, with out using dom4j
Thanks in advance....

I doubt you will find a preexisting solution to your problem.
SAX is usually recommended for processing big files (where "big" is undefined"). It works on big files by avoiding the messy problem of storing the data -- that is left as an exercise to you.
DOM (and its variants) works by building a Document object as the head of the tree of objects for the entire contents. With DOM, you can then use XPath, because there is something to search that is already in memory. To use XPath, you seem to have two choices, build a DOM-ish tree, or if you can find an XPath processor (I'm not sure if one exists) that can process the XML file directly, but it will be slow, since you are looking for "all" occurences of an attribute, and this means you have to read the entire file each time.
It might be worth exploring a hybrid approach -- use SAX to get some information, and build your own objects to store the data. Maybe a HashMap as the main index. But, that will keep you from using XPath, since you do not have the data structures it expects.
A third alternative would be to look at JAXB. It builds Java code from a Schema of your data and then when you import the data, it creates the necessary objects and fills in values. But, I don't think XPath woll work there either.

• How to break up a huge XML file and generate serialized JSP pages

I have a huge xml file, with about 100
nodes.
I want to process this xml file with pagination and generate jsp pages.
For example:
Display items from 0 to 9 on page 1 page1.jsp , 10 to 19 on page2.jsp, and so on...
Is it possible to generate JSP pages like this?
I have heard of Velocity but dont know if it will be the right technology for this kind of a job.

Thank you for your reply, I looked at the display tag library and it looks pretty neat with a lot of features, I could definitely use it in a different situation.
The xml file size is about 1.35 MB, and the size is unpredictable it could shrink or grow periodically depending on the number of items available.
I was hoping to create a documentation style (static pages) of the xml feed instead of having 1 jsp with dynamic pages
I was looking at Anakia : http://jakarta.apache.org/velocity/docs/anakia.html , may be it has features that enable me to create static pages but not very sure.
I think for now, I will transform the xml with an xsl file and pass the page numbers as input parameters to the xsl file
null

• How different Web Services can use a class which parses an XML file

I am using RAD6.1 for developing and deploying web services.As I am using 15 web Services which uses a common class which is used to parse an XML file.As this XML file should be parsed only once and should be used by all the web services.I have made this common class as Singleton but it works as singleton for only one webservice and for other web service again it is parsing the xml file.I want to parse this xml file only once and used by all the web services.In my case tis file is parsed 15 times for 15 web services, but it should be parse donly once and used by all 15 services.Please give me the solution.
Thanks and Regards
Sayeeduzzaman

Hello,
the 15 Webservices should have a static attribute which contains the xml:
private static String xml;
then initialise the xml like this:
if (xml == null)
xml = parseIt();
else
//do nothing, XML already initialised!
}

• How to parse nested xml file using dom

i want to parse nested xml file

please tell how to parse this file

Normally if you have no idea about X, the first thing you should do is google "X tutorial". You will find plenty of them out there. And the advantage is, they are better written than whatever we spend two minutes throwing together here. Not to mention that it saves us the two minutes.
But if you have specific questions with your SAX parser when you get it going, then ask them here. Actually, ask them in the XML forum here, not this one.

• Getting a iterator over a huge xml-file

Hi !
I have to persist data from some huge xml-files.
The structure of the xml is simple, like in:
<items>

</items>
The best way for me, is to get an iterator over the item-elements represented as a DOM strcture for easy access.
Because the files are so huge (80-150 MBytes) and I have no control over the creation of them, the underlying parser should be SAX oriented.
So I need a solution which will parse until one item-element (maybe spezified through a XPATH query) is completed and build a DOM-tree from it.
Then I can pass this DOM-element to my persistence layer. When this item is persisted, and the Iterator hasNext(), then I could do a simple .next() to get the next DOM representation of the item.
Is there such a solution out ? Or do I have to 'invent' such kind of parsing ?
Would by great to get some hints ... this problem is driving me crazy :)
Thank you in advance,
Gerald

Vaguely familiar, http://lists.xml.org/archives/xml-dev/200201/msg00032.html
I can't think of a DOM builder that would work off a fragment; you would probably have to create one yourself.
There's also http://drizzle.stanford.edu/~peastman/pax.html which might solve your problem.

OK, so you are writing the file with UTL_FILE. How long is the whole process taking. Have you timed the time taken to generate the temp_clob with the result Vs the time to write the output to a file.

• Can someone help me with a problem of parsing an XML file?

Hello,
I'm having some problems parsing an xml file. I get a SAXNotSupportedException when setting a property value.
Here is the piece of code where I have the problem:
SAXParserFactory spf = SAXParserFactory.newInstance();
spf.setNamespaceAware(true);
SAXParser saxParser = spf.newSAXParser();
XMLReader xmlReader = saxParser.getXMLReader();
DefaultHandler defHandler = new DefaultHandler();
xmlReader.setProperty("http://xml.org/sax/properties/lexical-handler", defHandler);
and the log is:
Problem with the parser org.xml.sax.SAXNotSupportedException: PAR012 For propertyID "http://xml.org/sax/properties/lexical-handler", the value "org.xml.sax.helpers.DefaultHandler@4ff4f74a" cannot be cast to LexicalHandler.
http://xml.org/sax/properties/lexical-handler org.xml.sax.helpers.DefaultHandler@4ff4f74a LexicalHandler
I've been working on this problem but I can't find the error.
Does anyone have an idea of what to do to solve it?
Thanx in advance,
M@G

before deciding which XML technology to use, you should see if your application fit in the category below:
use SAX:
1. The XML file is rather large (30 or 40+ MB)
2. I don't need the xml document in memory. I will parse the document and store the data in my own object.
use DOM or JDOM
1. The XML file is relatively small (less than 30 MB) or I can increase the runtime memory for larger xml file.
2. I will need to walk up and down the xml document tree severals time.
3. My application is in Java and it's not going to be rewritten in C++, etc (use JDOM)
NOTE:
JDOM is rather easier to use (for Java developer), but it's not an www.org.com standardlized xml parser.
personally, i like JDOM for traversing the DOM.

• Possible elements in the instanceconfig.xml file for presentation services

g'day
Has anyone here come across a list of all the possible elements that can be put in the configuration file for a presentation service, instanceconfig.xml ?

I have found next to nothing in the documentations, about what can be configured there.

What I am specifically after is: How can I change the default listening port for the Presentation Service? The default port is 9710 and I want to move to another port.

Also, how can I move the JavaHost from the default port 9810? I can change the file OracleBI/web/javahost/config/config.xml to reflect the change. Once the JavaHost has been restarted it starts up on the expected port, but the Presentation Service still tries to communicate over RPC to port 9810. How do I configure the presentation service to search for the JavaHost on a non-default port?

I have boiled it down to my original question: What are the possible values I can configure in the instanceconfig.xml file?

Any comments here would be great.

Cheers,
Borkur

So, I had a little breakthrough here.
I found in the OBIEE deployment guide, page 142:
To change the Presentation Services listener port
1 Open the instanceconfig.xml file for editing.
2 Locate the <WebConfig> element.
3 Within the <WebConfig> tags, create the element <RPC> and assign it the RPC Listener Port
value for the BI Presentation Services instance, as shown in the following example.
<WebConfig>
<ServerInstance>
<RPC>
<Listener port="9715" />
</RPC>
</ServerInstance>
</WebConfig>
NOTE: In the preceding example, the RPC Listener port for the BI Presentation Services instance
has been changed to port 9715 from the default of 9710.

This almost works. The RPC element has been deprecated, as was reported in the sawserver.out.log:
The configuration entry 'RPC/Listener' is deprecated. Please refer to the admin guide for more information.
What I then did was to just remove the RPC elements and leaving the Listener element straight under there ServerInstance element. This seems to have solved the problem.
I still have to figure out how to let the Presentation Service know that I have moved the JavaHost to antoher port ...

• Parsing an XML file

I've written a program which is partly responsible for parsing an XML file that can be found on the web. I appear to be accessing the XML file correctly, but when I try to parse it I am running into a problem. I try to create a List object that contains all of the children of the root element. The code looks like this:
Document doc = parser.build(xmlFile);
Element root = doc.getRootElement();
List rootChildren = root.getChildren();But I get an error that say that "the type List is ambiguous". I am importing java.util.*. I am trying to do this exactly like a few examples I found on the web, but I can't seem to get past this issue. What do I need to keep Eclipse from telling me that List is not an ambiguous type.

Maybe you haveimport java.util.*;
import java.awt.*;Both packages contains a List class.
In that case, the compiler doesn't know which one you're talking about.
If you don't need the java.awt.List class here, try not to import it.
If you need it, use the fully qualified class name in your code.
