Want to check if Iv'e got this right:  PC External Drive    PC Mac

Hi,
I'm going to attempt something and I just want to make sure I'm doing it right (I've searched the forums and this is what I've come up with).
I have an iPod formatted to a Windows XP computer and all my iTunes on that computer.
STEP 1:
I want to move my entire iTunes library off the C drive and onto an external hard drive (I'm out of space on my computer and will erase the library from the C drive once the transfer is done, leaving the library only in the external drive).
I assume this is what I need to do?
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748
I've read in the forums that sometimes there are problems with the iPod recognizing/synching to the new drive -- but I'm assuming if I follow the procedures in that tutorial then any problems I have can be fixed (i.e., By transferring in that way I'm NOT doing any permenant damage to my library, filelists, labels, etc.) -- correct?
I just want to check this before I do Step 1.
STEP 2
About 6 months from now I expect to get a new computer, and I expect it to be a Mac. I would want to transfer all my music to the Mac and discard my current PC. There's lots of stuff on the board about doing this. E.g.,
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93367
My one question now -- which is probably a silly one -- is this: Is the fact that all my music will need to be transferred from my PC's external hard drive (as opposed to the internal C drive) cause any significant additional problems? I think the answer is no but I just want to make sure.
Any clarification you can give on this would be appreciated. Thanks.
iPod   Windows XP Pro

Thanks. I've got one related one.
Let's say I copy everything to my external hard drive but -- for the time being -- still leave the original on my c drive. Is there a way to test that the iTunes is working off of the external drive?
In other words, before erasing the songs on the C drive, can I do this and check to see that iTunes works with the external, the iPod interfaces with the external, etc. And then when I'm sure, erase the stuff on the C drive?
If so, how do I go about verifying this?
By the way, all of these songs are in mp3 format.
thanks,

  • I have my iTunes Library on and external hard drive.  I have a new computer and want to use iTunes and KEEP my files on the external drive.

    My iTunes library is on an external hard drive, and I was able to access / add to the library from my windows laptop.
    I now have a new laptop, and want to be able to KEEP the library on the external drive while being able to use iTunes from the new laptop.
    I have selected "choose library" in iTunes, and have chosen the iTunes Library.itl file on the external drive.
    My media populates in iTunes on the new laptop version of iTunes, but when I click on a song iTunes says that it cannot locate the song.
    Your help is kindly appreciated!

    Thanks.  Were the settings shown in your last screenshot in force when you added the song that's shown on being on the C: drive?  It is also possible that at some point you ran iTunes with the external drive disconnected, in which case it will have defaulted to the library on the C: drive, or that you've run iTunes without explicitly selecting the library on the E: drive.  To make sure the latter is the case, hold down SHIFT while starting iTunes, then when you get this prompt:
    click on Choose Library..., navigate to the location of your current iTunes Library.itl file, and click Open.
    Part of your issue may that its not obvious where that current database file is located.  The folder layout on your E: drive isn't the one that's most easily managed - so its possible that the database file could be in:
    E:\xxxx\Files\iTunes
    E:\xxxx\Files\iTunes\iTunes
    E:\xxxx\Files\iTunes\iTunes 1
    I suggest that a lot of your issues can be addressed by reshaping your library into the reliable "portable" layout as described in tt2's Make a split library portable user tip.  Comparing your screenshot with the equivalent on my system (where I have a "well-formed" library on an external drive):
    where:
    there is just one iTunes folder with everything used by iTunes inside it
    all media is held within subfolders of the iTunes Media folder
    The way you have yours set up, where the iTunes Media Folder location is set to E:\xxxx\Files\iTunes rather than E:\xxxx\Files\iTunes\iTunes Media is probably why some of your media is not being located correctly - the extent to which iTunes can correctly resolve locations is, to an extent, reliant on the folders for the different media kinds (Music, Audiobooks, etc.) being inside the iTunes Media media folder.  One common misunderstanding (not helped at all by Apple's documentation!) is that the iTunes Media Folder location setting in Edit > Preferences > Advanced does not tell iTunes where to find anything; rather it determines where iTunes will put new additions to your Library, in conjunction with the Copy files to iTunes Media folder ... flag:
    I would definitely take the time to work through the steps to bring your library into the "portable" shape - there may be few remaining issues with broken links when that's complete but this will be much easier to fix if your library is in a more standard structure.

    You probably want to save the user's e-mail address and any other identifying information he/she submitted in the questionaire. For this, you will probably want to use a database, so I would suggest learning JDBC as well.

  • Opied files got corrupted in USB3 external drives connected to Macbook Pro, how to fix it?

    I use USB3 connected external hard drives in my Macbook Pro mid 2012 (Yosemite 10.10.1) frequently. I had no problem until two months ago. This week I noticed a lot of corrupted files in one ext drive connected to USB3 port. Luckily  I have a backup, and I copied back the files. But the files copied recently were also corrupted even though source files are fine. I spent a whole day trying to fix it using different methods of copy and options, e.g. erasing the drive, using cp, rsync, ditto and a combination of their options. I figured out that if I use cp or cp - R for copying single file or folder, it works fine, but using of rsync, ditto or recursive cp or finder's drag and drop result into a lot of corrupted files in the target drive.  This is not the problem of external drive.  I was surprised to notice that all files are copied perfectly when I used a old macbook (2008 model, it only has USB2 port, and OSX Mavericks). Since I have almost 2TB data to write, USB2 is very slow. I want to use USB3 of Macbook Pro 2012, but I am very disappointed to find out that USB3 in Yosemite is causing the trouble, writing out corrupted files. If anyone has a solution to this problem, or a second thought, Please suggest.

    Disk is formatted to Paragon NTFS

    My guess here is there is some issue with the use of Paragon NTFS. Perhaps updating it or using another NTFS driver (like Tuxera, or its free alternative NTFS-3G) will work. All in all, using NTFS in write mode with these options will be using a non-supported approach for accessing your drive, which could lead to odd problems if Apple makes a change that interferes with the functions of these drivers. At other times, such drivers use inherently less stable approaches (such as the FUSE environment) that could lead to problems if not formatted correctly.
    If your drive is working, and the formatting is checked out properly in Windows and other systems, then I'd suggest you check on your NTFS driver and update or replace it. Alternatively, if you only use the drive with your Mac, then consider formatting it to Apple's native Mac OS Extended. Lastly, if you use the drive with multiple operating systems, then consider using FAT32 or ExFAT as the format, as these are fully supported in OS X (unlike NTFS, which is only supported for reading).

    It's good to hear the Macbook Pro & the disk is capable of working correctly. The next test would be to try a clean install of OS X & repeat the copy guess. Adding third party drivers for write support makes the picture a little cloudy IMO.
    I'm not really sure what else to suggest other than doing some tests & then taking that data to an Apple store. If you are lucky the genius may follow up on it, or if you submit it as bug reports Apple may follow up on it.

  • Checking to see if iPhoto images transferred to external drive worked

    I have decided to copy photos from my iPhoto '09 Library to an external Seagate harddrive. I want to still keep the originals on my MacBook Pro, but I am looking at downloading Lightroom 5 and starting to use it from 2014 going forward, instead of using iPhoto. Before I start working in a new program, I want to be sure all my images are backed up using a program I can operate.  I double-clicked on my home folder and then the Pictures folder to open the iPhoto library.  I right clicked on the file iPhoto Library, hit copy and then opened my Seagate external drive and hit paste. It took about 3 hours to copy and when I hit "get info" on the folder within the Seagate external drive, I see the same number of GBs of information as is in my iPhoto Library on my harddrive.
    Here is the question: I want to be sure that,in fact, all my photos have been successfully copied onto my harddrive. When I double click on the folder in the harddrive which is titled, iPhoto Library, I see my iPhoto icon launch from my dock at the bottom of my MacBook, and across the top I see that iPhoto is the open program. Of course, all my events are where they always were, but I'm not sure I am looking at the events in the iPhoto on my harddrive or on my Seagate external drive.
    Did I do something wrong?

    I only want to use this external drive as a back up, not to be a default library. I still want to keep the default on my MacBook Pro. I only want to open the external drive to make sure that my photos have all been copied and are being stored there.
    Then option launch again to change the default back to the internal drive
    A second question I have, is when I download more photos into the iPhoto library on my laptop, or into what I hope to be a Lightroom Library, starting 2014, then when I hook up the Seagate External Hard Drive to back up next time, will it re-write all the previous photos which have currently been backed up prior to 2014, or will it just start with whatever photos (or new Lightroom Library) it does not recognize?
    No idea - nothing in the standard Mac software will "re-write" anything - if you have backup software of some sort running then it will do what ever it does - unless you have something special set up nothing will change in the copy on the external drive until you specifically do something to change it
    And note that LR and iPhoto can not share a library of the same photos - to use your photos with LR you must export the originals (or current depending on what you want) from iPhoto and then import those into LR

  • I am a month or so into my new FCPX, I want to copy my first test project to my toshiba external drive but it seems to be harder than I thought. I would welcome any help

    I am a month or so into FCPX and a new imac and I seem to have trouble sending my first project to a toshiba external hard drive.
    I am following larry Jordans tutorial but it seems to differ slightly from my own.
    I simply want to copy the project over to my external drive so i can take it to work to show it.
    Thanks in advance

    I notice it says the file is already saved do I want to overwrite but it keeps saying the same thing and I can't find the file on my external drive.
    I managed to get it also copied to my desktop.
    I might add at this point, I am not so smart on computers and am using the new iMac and FCPX as a way to really learn
    The system thoroughly.

  • Now got iTunes library on external drive, will TM back it up?

    Hi
    I've just moved my iTunes library from my internal HDD on my Mac to a portable USB powered HDD as it was taking up to much room.
    I use TM with another desktop external drive that I plug in. Will TM backup the portable USB drive with iTunes on?
    do I need to do anything to do this?
    Can I also add other stuff to the portable drive and TM will backup this to?
    The portable drive is formatted as Mac OS Journaled
    cheers

    the loc-man wrote:
    Ah ok so everytime I now add something to the portable drive I will have to specifically tell TM not to back it up, as it will do all of drive if not.
    correct.
    So the older iTunes library that was on my internal iMac HDD, will I dump this now? is it a case of going into a finder window, going to home/user/Music/iTunes and right clicking and delete all previous backups? or should I leave it there?
    that's a tricky question. instead of deleting the iTunes folder from your startup disk, you might want to consider it your backup of your precious media files (or perhaps move it to yet another external HD). see http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/20.html.
    but, if you really want to, *don't use the finder* ! see http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/12.html.

  • I am new to LR and before I install it I want to know if it can be installed on an external drive which would allow me to us it on both a desktop and laptop (both Macs) as needed.

    My thinking is that if both the program and the library are on the same external drive it's easy for me to use the desktop when at home, and use the laptop when away from home. All I need to do is take the external drive with me. Is this possible? Are there any watch outs or downsides to doing this?
    MTIA

    You can store the images and the LR catalog on an external drive, yes. But you would need to have the LR application installed on both the laptop and desktop machine and just move the drive with the images and catalog back and forth. That's pretty common...

  • Moving to another drive. Have I got this right?

    I hope you guys aren't as mean as your rep!   Arch has a reputation for being hard to install.  So, I decided that I would install to a USB hard drive and move it if I was successful.  Well it wasn't as bad as all that.   I have a working system with an xfce desktop and I like it.:)   So, time to run my Manjaro installation to a backup drive and move onto my laptop's main drive.  I think I know how I want to do it but, I'd like someone to check me.  Here are the steps I think I need to do:
    Use gparted to backup the existing partitions to another USB drive.  That's running now.
    Blow away the partitions on the main drive.
    Boot from a liveCD and use gparted to resize the partiions on the USB drive as needed and copy them where the partitions used to be on the main drive.
    Edit /etc/fstab to mount the right paritions to the right mount points.
    Modify grub to boot the arch installation.
    I should mention that the windows installation that came with the laptop is still on the main drive and I want to be able to boot into it and I'm not using UEFI.  I'm comfortable moving around the partitions and I have editted an fstab before.  I'm not so sure about grub...yet.  If you have a good link, please let me know.  As a last resort, I have a boot rescue disk that can probably handle it.  I've used it to straighten out worse but, I'd like to learn how to do it myself.
    So, did I miss anything?

    I did move successfully...sort of.  Some observations and a question.
    WonderWoofy you were right.  I was going to just move the partitions around with gparted because I could queue up all the operations and go to bed.  In the morning viola, everything the way I want it. It didn't quite work out.  Gparted got errors copying my /home partition.  So, I blew away what it copied, created a new partition, and rsynced the files in my home partition over.  That worked fine and I'm sure it was faster than copying the partition would have been.
    I got /etc/fstab editted and that worked fine.
    Now for the surprise.  Grub's not as dumb as it was last time I played with it.  It was a while back.  It might have even been lilo.  I wanted to boot off the install on my USB drive to mess with grub.  Forgive me, if you understand grub and this sounds dumb and please help me remedy my ignorance.  My bios was set to boot off the USB and there was a grub instance on there.  That instance was set to boot me into arch.  It looked like it found the arch partition on my main drive and booted into that.  It worked though.  So, I shut down and unplugged the USB and started back up.  A grub menu came up with two arch entries, two windows entries (One's the recover partition that came with the laptop) and two manjaro entries.  The ones I want seem to work.  I don't know what it'll try to boot if I select a manjaro entry.  I'd like to get rid of them though.
    I don't see anyplace grub could be detecting manjaro.  None of the web pages I can find that address editting that menu seem to speak about the grub setup I'm finding here.  Everything I've ever read on grub cautions against editting the grub.cfg directly but, I am tempted.  Any suggestions?
    EDIT:
    Never mind.  A more careful reading of the grub archwiki lead me to try this command:
    # grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
    That did it.

  • Tell me if I've got this right ...

    I'm going to create a J2EE web application driven against an Oracle database. I want to confirm my approach for development to ensure I'm not on the wrong track so please help me make sure I understand this correctly.
    I'm creating a JSP page with a form that posts to a Servlet, the Servlet pulls the form data out and makes a call to the database based upon it, the returned result is being stored inside of a CachedRowSet which is then pushed into the Response scope, I then redirect users to another JSP from the Servlet, the JSP then pulls the CachedRowSet from the Response scope and renders the results using this CachedRowSet bean.
    Is this proper?

    Is this proper?Yes it is proper, and in fact it's what a lot of web architects are recommending these days. As some other posts have said, if you are writing a small system you can get away with servlets only, or JSPs only, but for something professional (I see you are using Oracle) an MVC design like your description would be better.
    Personally I don't care much for JSPs because once "they" decide to change the look-and-feel of your website, there's a lot of repetitive work necessary to do that change. Unless you have planned for that possibility. But I haven't come up with anything much better.

  • Interfaces have i got this right?

    Hello folks just wondering if i've understood interfaces correctly.
    Interfaces are like a contract between user and serviceprovider.
    So basicly i could have a Interface Tool
    a class Monkey
    a class Hammer
    a class Ninja just for the sake of it
    and the code for Tool would be
    interface Tool{
          use();
    }and the code for hammer would be
    class Hammer implements Tool{
        void use(){
              //bang something
    }and the code for Ninja would be
    class Ninja implements Tool{
         void use{
               //throw some stars
    }and the code for Monkey would be
    class Monkey{
         Tool tool1=new Hammer();
         Tool tool2=new Ninja();
         void work(){
              tool1.use();
              tool2.use();
    }But what if Tool was a class and Hammer and Ninja extended Tool instead? Then what would be the point of using interfaces?
    Edited by: ColacX on Jul 19, 2009 5:40 AM

    It's both inheritance/polymorphism. Purely technically, there's hardly a reason for it. But interfaces are much more convenient.
    But imagine you want to test a method that takes an instance of type Tool as a parameter. If Tool is just an interface, you can create a basic implementation of it that supports your tests. This doesn't seem like much at first, but if the instantiation of the Tool class depends on several other classes in return, things start to get difficult to "mock". Like a ResultSet for instance - either quick-implement it to do what you need, or set up an entire database just for a unit test.
    Another advantage is that everyone who's programming against your API doesn't need to have the current class implementations. Just share the (more stable) interfaces with other teams, and they can program and test, even though your class is still under construction, too. Changes to the class also happen more often than changes to the interface.
    And of course, you can only extend from one class, but implement many interfaces.If Ninja already extends AsianWarrior, along with Samurai, you'll have a hard time making extend Tool as well. ;)

  • Just want to make sure I've gotten this right

    I have become a converted Windows user. I now have both a Desktop and a Laptop Mac. Love them.
    Really want to convert from Windows Mobile to the Iphone BUTTTT I need to see if I missed something first.
    Are these really Missing In Action (MIA)?
    1. Bluetooth support for Itunes without a dongle?
    2. Copy, cut, paste?
    3. Multimedia Messaging?
    Did I miss something here?
    Super interface - but without these 3, challenged considering the wide spread implementation of EVDO vs ATT 3G.
    Help????

    I understand your concerns.
    But I don't understand #1 "Bluetooth support for Itunes without a dongle?" . Do you mean a dongle to get bluetooth to send music to your headphones? ie Stereo Bluetooth (A2DP)?
    My answer is that you would have to buy a third party headphone set including a bluetooth "dongle" aka "adapter". http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/08/09/iphone-gets-stereo-with-infinixx-blueto oth-a2dp-adapter/
    2. Coming from the Treo: missing copy cut paste is a real bummer. Lets hope for that to come in a free software update.
    3. MMS: I email my photos. But a swedish company is working on an App that will allow MMS.
    #3 brings about the most important factor on the iphone for missing feature gripes. If Apple didn't include it then check the App Store for a free or usually cheap (under $10) solution.
    I have yet to meet someone that once they switched to the iPhone, switched back.
