Wanted: Portable Hard Drive With SD Slot Used with Leopard/Timemachine

Are there external/portable hard drives that work with Leopard/Timemachine, which have an SD slot? It would be convenient to take the hard drive on the road to download frequently. But I'm not sure about a power source unless I bring my laptop.
I have an 80GB MacBook and looking for external picture storage. I use the computer mainly for IPhoto and web browsing.
The Apple store online doesn't have such a device and I would consider getting the iomega 160 GB portable hard drive from them.
Many thanks,
Carlos Marques

You can boot your iMac from a connected FireWire drive. It must be FireWire and not USB. G3 Macs cannot run Leopard. Tiger will work fine, if you have more RAM.
Also, can a Mac Mini be connected to my iMac and used as an external drive?
If the Mac Mini is PowerPC and not the current Intel version, you should be able to start the Mac mini in FireWire Target Disk Mode
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
and connect it to the iMac's FireWire port as an external drive. If the Mac mini is PowerPC and has Tiger installed on it, the iMac should even be able to boot from that installation. If it has Leopard, you can still connect to it for data storage purposes, but you cannot boot the iMac from it.
If the Mac mini is Intel, the drive is partitioned using +GUID Partition Table+ (instead of +Apple Partition Map+ used by PowerPC Macs). Therefore, access to the drive using FireWire Target Disk Mode will depend on the OS installed on the iMac. It should work if the OS is Tiger. It will not work with Panther and earlier.
If you want to use a Mac mini to off-load some of the data on the iMac, you may want to use a network connection instead. Then, you will have full access to the Mac mini while it shares its storage space with the old iMac.

    Do not worry about it.
Time Machine needs that your external drive is formatted in HFS+, or better known as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". This filesystem is used by Apple on Macs and Windows cannot read or write drives formatted with this filesystem, being this the reason why all your devices do not read the external drive except your Mac.
You can only use your external drive to make Time Machine drives. If you store anything different, you may damage the Time Machine structure, so it is better not to use it as a drive to store other data. Instead, get another external drive to do it or create a second partition on the external drive formatted in FAT32 by using Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html FAT32 can be read by Windows PCs

  • I want to format my hard drive and install Lion, using Snow Leopard at the moment.

I'm running Snow Leopard at the moment, and would like to install Lion.
But I want to wipe my hard drive clean before doing so, is there a way of formating the hard drive as you install the downloaded lion?
    Thanks for ur answers.

Not that I'm aware of. You can, however, grab the installer file and create a bootable USB thumb drive after downloading Lion and BEFORE you install it. Read here on how to do this.
After downloading, I would let it install. Then reboot with the USB thumb drive, use Disk Utilities to wipe the drive and then install Lion from the thumb drive. Do a backup first.

  • Two hard drives or one to used with Parallel

    Hi everyone,
I recently bough my first MAC (27 Imac). Unfortunately I have my work life on PC; therefore, I already own programs such as Autocad and Quickbooks. I would like to used Parallel or VM to have access to those files, since they are not available or I already have them. My question is: should I get two hardrives to run parallel, one with lots of storage, or an external thunderbolt. I'm confuse to which way I will get the files to open, save and render the quicker. Thank you in advance for all your replies.

Parallels will manage the hard drive for you. You do not have to have a second physical drive to run Parallels.
It is possible to use Parallels with Boot Camp, which lets you boot the Mac as a native Windows machine. I do not recommend this unless you are a gamer. For AutoCad and QuickBooks, there is no need for a Boot Camp partition.
You can let Parallels set up a TIme Machine backup. If you follow the directions in Parallels, this will be a backup that only backs up what has changed, not the whole Parallels virtual disk, so it does not blow up Time Machine.
I use Parallels for Quicken and for a Polar Heart Rate Monitor. It works great. It is outstanding in the latest version with OSX 10.7 Lion, because you can run your Windows machine (or your Windows Apps) in Full Screen mode and flick between them and your other Mac screens with a finger swipe on your Trackpad.

  • Want bigger hard drive and replace boot camp with parallels

Bought the 15" MBP on day one now more than two years ago. The 80 gig hard drive is nowhere near enough now and having to essentially shut down to run boot camp no longer works (I'm an accountant and need to be able to flip back and forth quickly).
    Two questions:
    1) Can I add a much bigger hard drive to my original version MBP?
    2) If so, can I expand my pitiful 5 gig boot camp windows partition to, say, 20 gig and have parallels run it without having to reinstall all the windows programs?
That would be my perfect world, is it possible?

Are you under warranty? If so, you would probably want to get an Apple authorized repair shop to replace the hard drive so you don't risk voiding your warranty. But you can replace it with a much larger one, like the 320 GB Western Digital or the 500 GB Samsung if you can find one. There is another thread on this forum concerning the 500 GB drives. Not all 500 GB drives will fit in a 15" MBP--some are too tall.
Not familiar with either boot camp or parallels, but with the bigger drive, you should be able to easily have a bigger partition for windows. As to whether you would need to reinstall the windows programs, someone more familiar with windows would have to address that part of your question.
    Good luck!

  • Converting an external Hard drive into FAT32 for use with a PS3.

Hello. I am having trouble and wondering if anyone can help me. I have an external Hard drive (250 gigs) that is completely empty. I am trying to format it to FAT32 So I can use it with a PS3 but I am having a hard time doing so and can't fins a topic that actually tells you how to do it. Does anyone know how? thanks in advance!

Open Disk Utility in Applications Utilities.
Select the Drive on the left, not the indented Partition below that, it'll likely have the Size & Make of the Drive.
Select the Erase Tab, select the Volume Format Pulldown menu, choose MS/Dos, if you don't see that choice you have the Partition selected.

As long as it's USB, any one will work (If you're only using it for your Mac, then use Disk Utility to Partition it as GUID/HFS+).

  • New computer, itunes backed up on portable hard drive,  how to transfer?

I have just received a new laptop. I connected my portable hard drive on which i had backed up my itunes library from my old pc. On the new computer i used the "add folder to library" function in itunes. All the songs from my hard drive appear in the iTunes library on my new laptop, but when i try to play the songs, iTunes asks me to locate each individual song file on my portable hard drive. i have tried using the consolidate library function but this hasn't done anything. I don't want to have to "locate file" for each of the thousands of tracks i have stored on my portable hard drive.

The first time I connected my new My Passport portable hard drive to my MacBook Pro, the message asking if I want to use the drive to back up with Time Machine did not appear.  I would like to set it up to do this.  What would my next step be?

    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Open Time Machine preferences to select this drive for use as the backup drive. Turn on Time Machine.

  • Portable Hard drive formating for use with windows and mac operating system

Just bought a verbatim sure fire 500g 800 firewire portable hard drive for my new macbook pro. I have not did bootcamp yet because I am deciding on wether to use Vista or the new windows 7 that will be coming out soon. The drive is already formated HFS+, how do I format the drive so I can write both windows and mac files to it. Help!!!

how do I format the drive so I can write both windows and mac files to it.
Either format it to MS-DOS from the DIsk Utility, or install a tool such as MacDrive into Windows and keep the drive in its current format, or install the NTFS-3G driver into Mac OS X and format the drive to NTFS in Windows.

  • Use portable hard drive for Time Machine & other things

I recently purchased a 1 TB portable hard drive. I'd like to use it for my Time Machine backups, as well as moving my iTunes library there. Is this an easy change? I'm not super familiar with hard drive set ups. Will I have to create any partitions on the drive?
    Thanks!

You're welcome. Make sure your drive is formated as Mac OS Extended (journaled), GUID partition table.
Here's a nice link to use for Time Machine information.
You can partition the drive if you want to organize your various backups. For example you might create a Time Machine partition and Other Files partition. When Time Machine is working, it creates a folder (Backups.backupdb) and places the Time Machine backups in that folder. The rest of the partition is open to add whatever you want. I have multiple partitions on my USB external drive with Time Machine backups separated from other backups.

  • Can I back-up files to a portable hard drive and not use Time Machine?

I have a portable hard drive that I use for all of my Time Machine back-ups. I back-up the entire system every two or three weeks. I use the Time Machine software and it works quite well. I'm interested in backing up specific files (photos, documents, etc.) to a second portable drive every six months but I don't want to use the Time Machine software. Is there a simple way to hook up the portable drive (brand new Lacie 500 gb drive), open up the file on my desktop and drag the files to the new drive? Are there special steps I need to perform to avoid formatting the drive for Time Machine? Any tips will be greatly appreciated.

You can do that, but you'll have to erase the drive, or delete the previous versions, each time. You might want to look at CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper. They're most often used to make full bootable "clones" of your internal HD, but can be set to back up specific files and folders as well. CCC is donationware, so you can try it for a while before sending them some $$ so they can keep it up to date. SD has a free version, but I think you'll need the paid one (about $30, I think) to do this.

It would be best to format it for Macs, which is the same as Time Machine. What is the problem with that?
